You recognize the creature as an Eurypterid, more commonly known as a "sea-scorpion." This is a rather small variety called an ochre eurypterid, but they grow, much, much bigger. The creature is aquatic, but is able to come onto land for short periods of time. The claws are said to be tasty, much like a cross between crab and lobster, but their stinger is poisonous and the claws of the ochre eurypterid is said to be able to sever fingers. When they get the scent of blood, they sometimes swarm.
I'll use the last roll that Caasi made and assume he's smart enough to take another step backwards before trying to shoot.
Janrose and Malchi both charge in at the small creature which is threatening Caasi, but their nausea, and the shifting sands beneath their feet hamper them. Malchi's staff strikes the sand, and Janrose's swing goes above the creature.
Caasi steps back and fires off a second arrow, hastily drawing it from the quiver dangling loose in his hand. The arrow strikes the sand right between the clawed thing and Malchi's feet.
Meantime Klania heads for her gear and begins grabbing for her rapier and dagger.
Fighting back her queasiness, Arinka surveys the situation and then with a complicated gesture and a word, she sends a bolt of energy from her fingertips, unerringly striking the sea beast. The bolt shatters against the creature, flipping it up and almost over. The creature stops moving.
[ooc] I didn't heal much but my character (only one hurt) can stand 1 point of damage and it would be a big waste to hit just me with a healing spell. [/occ]
The battle done, you each begin to collect your gear and your wits. You are standing upon a beach, and it appears to be dawn, as the sun is just rising over the horizon. To the south of you, there is a wall of green, a jungle, filled, by the sounds of it, with a cacophony of life. To the east and west, ragged arms jagged rocks reach out to embrace a wave-tossed cove, while to the north, the waters of the sea surge and churn between the beach and a line of racor-sharp rocks.
There are ten of you on the beach. The other five are just now beginning to stir. Malchi channels out a wave of positive energy. Caasi feels better, the soreness from his leg where the creature pinched him completely disappears.
Some of your gear is wet, but it all appears to be there.
Caasi:
Caasi sees a ship in the distance on the western side of the cove, apparently wrecked. It could be the Jenivere, though it is too far to tell. Tide is currently low, and it looks like one could walk to where the ship is along the rocks along the edge of the cove. You can make a Knowledge (geography) skill check if you wish.
Janrose:
You can make a Heal check if you wish.
Malchi:
You can make a Heal check if you wish.
Klania:
Your sharp eyes easily spot a ship in the distance on the western side of the cove, apparently wrecked. It could be the Jenivere, though it is too far to tell. Tide is currently low, and it looks like one could walk to where the ship is along the rocks along the edge of the cove.
I would like to make a Knowledge (geography) skill check. How do I do that?
"I see a shipwreck down the western half of the coast, could be the Jenivere. The tide is low, we should make our way towards it if we can. If it is the Jenivere, no doubt we will find supplies there. Maybe even more survivors."
can i instead a profession medic?
If so
Medic:1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
if not
Heal:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
"I agree. Searching the wreck will be the most useful thing we can do. If anything that is firewood, and hopefully some supplies that the wreck didn't destroy. We can also see if there is any clues as to what just happened."
"if were going to walk to it, we should try walking along the edge of the cove"
as we get closer can i make a perception check to see if i can tell if it was the Jenivere
You realize you are suffering from the classic symptoms of severe poisoning, the nausea, the pain in the stomach and the ache in the limbs. Medically speaking, you know of several poisons that could produce such symptoms, but think that Taggit or Blue Whinnis are likely culprits, administered orally, likely via the food. (Though if it was Blue Whinnis, you suspect you would be even weaker; already the nausea is passing.) Which explains why you remember dinner, but everything after is a blur of pain and nausea.
Malchi's thrush flutters down and lands on his shoulders.
On the beach, Ishirou stands and looks around blurrily. "What happened," he asks, "Where are we?"
Sasha and Aerys are both beginning to move, as is the Garundi man, whom, you notice, is in shackels.
As your sickness begins to dissipate, and your mind clears, you think concerning where you might be. The most likely candidate, judging from the rocks in the water, and the trajectory of the ship over the past few weeks, is a small island in Desperation Bay, north of Eleder named Smuggler's Shiv. It is named for the knife-like shape of the coastline, but also for the tendency of ships to wreck upon the rocks around it. It is commonly believed that the shores are haunted by the ghosts and ghouls of those sailors and smugglers who died on the rocks around the island, and the failure of any colonists to ever establish a long-term settlement on the island tend to give credence to that idea. You believe that there might be a lighthouse, on the southwest shore of the island, the remnants of a failed attempt to colonize the island, but also an attempt to warn ships away from the rocks. There are many other rumors that circulate about Smuggler's Shiv, including one that a group of Chelish soldiers, survivors of the attempted Thrune invasion of Sargava about 70 years ago, were stranded on the island and that their cannibalistic descendants hunt the island looking for shipwrecked sailors to eat.
Striking conversation with my rogue kin, Klania while on my way to poke Gelik with a stick:
“Judging from the rocks in the water, and the bearings the Jenivere had been traveling over the past few weeks, this is a small island in Desperation Bay, north of Eleder named Smuggler's Shiv"
mmh, looking at the map the DM gave us and knowing that we were going to be near the Mwangi area. maybe we went through the hurricane and floated over here. maybe although that is a long time to float. might explain the gnome unconsciousness.
"There are many rumors about this place. I have heard it said that the shores are haunted by the ghosts and ghouls of those sailors and smugglers who died on the rocks around the island.. also a group of Chelish soldiers were supposedly stranded on the island about 70 years ago, another failed colonization attempt, their cannibalistic descendants still hunting the island looking for shipwrecked sailors to eat. So if we do run into anyone, if the rumors serve to be true, they wont be Mwangi.”
Also, your ship sailed around the Eye several weeks ago... So it is doubtful that you got caught up in the perpetual hurricane.
I still want to know why our gear was all here, and why it is in individual piles. It seems to me that this was somehow set up. On an unrelated note, may I make a new heal check?
“While we are all here still; based on what I know about the island I believe that there might be a lighthouse, on the southwest shore of the island maybe; the remnants of a failed attempt to colonize the island perhaps. Perhaps viable shelter as well, a good place to establish a camp and signal for help? The ship is more or less in that direction. We should look for it after we finish with the wreck.”
Actually the ship is to the north, exactly in the opposite direction, but carry on... :)
The other five, begin gathering up their gear as well, all of them looking a little pale. Malchi notices, however, that his stomach is already feeling some better...
"A place to camp would be nice," says Aerys, she pulls a flask from her hip and then ruefully realizes that it is empty. She does not appear very happy.
