Okay, it appears Bjorn has forsaken us. I've asked Hjalvar to step in and take his place. He's also a skald, but we've come up with a solution to keep Objarni and him from stepping on each other's toes. Hjalvar will take an archetype that gives him a different kind of song than raging song.
Anyway, the ball is in you all's court now. You need to decide what to do with the Jotunn, and then come up with an escape plan. It will be hard to see in character since there is only one light source, but there are only two other rooms on this level. The guard room, immediately outside the cells, and then a small meeting room where Objarni was taken. There is a set of stairs leading down to the rest of the fort as well.

I'm looking at the game on Roll20 for the tactical map but it is a black screen. Am I doing something wrong or is it because there is no active combat scene?
(I know we're out of combat, but I just want to make sure I'm not getting a browser error or something)
Hjalvar, Bard of the North |
Set up Hjalvar's token. Let me know if it doesn't work.
Hmmm. On the game map screen I'm still only seeing a blank, black image. No pawns/tokens, no map.
Hjalvar, Bard of the North |
Lemme see. Stay on Roll20.
Edit: Seems to be working. Make sure you zoom out. We're currently at the right side of the map.
Found it. I had to scroll all the way to the right and scroll down a ways. Sorry for the hiccup.

FYI I opted out of the chain shirt because it was previously mentioned as "chainmail", which in hindsight was probably just flavor text as opposed to a PF game term. I thought it was a full suit of mail.
I'm going to assume that Objarni will take the chain shirt. If not, I will happily take it.
---------------
Also, in Room 17, that thing on the south wall is a comically large fireplace/chimney. It appears it would be relatively easy to climb down.
On Roll20 my view of Room 17 is quite narrow, I can't see anything resembling a wall or fireplace/chimney.
Setting the map aside, is the chimney wide enough for Gromplejak?
DM Jelani |
Guys, this is a big map. I will be moving you around it. Make sure you zoom all the way out and make sure we're not just on a different part of it before you report being blind. I haven't touched any settings, so I'm guessing it's just that. Before we were on the right side of the map, now the middleish.
Or, I'm an idiot and made the torch in the stairwell so nobody could see its light. Whoops!
Will Erland |
Checked the chimney, felt warm. Probable fire. I don't presume to know what the window does so I leave it to a caster to decide.
Óbjarni |
I'm back. Slow to catch up. Welcome Hjalvar, Bard of the North.
EDIT - I'm unclear on the original two chainmails and longswords. Objarni would take one of each if available. Please advise before I post in combat. thanks
EDIT 2 - Did the two outfits of the two original guards include anything made of wool? I just need a pinch for material components.
cheers

Remaining in the veil are what looks like a bullseye lantern, a window, a bag, a rope, and potion-looking bottle.
Didn't someone took of the bag already?
If I remember correctly, there was gold inside. The bag turns out to be a heavy purse, full of Roman minted gold coins. It is a substantial sum of money, more than most farmers would see in their whole lives, but not yet enough to make the prisoners rich. In exchange for the gold they might net a few swords, or perhaps a suit of mail armor. Or they might hire a few warriors to crew a ship for a month or two, depending on the caliber of the fighters.
Óbjarni |
The original description of the veil did not have a separate purse as the quotes above show. Objarni pulled the only bag hoping for a spell component pouch but got a bag of gold.
It would be great if you would just give Kellen his spell component pouch now.
cheers
Hjalvar, Bard of the North |
That's good to hear for Kellen and Objarni.
Luckily all of my current spells only require V and S components with one exception that requires a bit of wool.

I moved up so that I can heal Will asap, which I cannot do by staying behind the giant. The dogs were in the way, so I had little choice in where I ended my movement.
Gromplejak has reach so he can hit over my head if he so chooses, so its not too bad for now.
Hjalvar, Bard of the North |
No, I don't think I'll be doing that. I made a tactical decision to move up so that I would be 1 move action from reaching Will in subsequent turns. If I remain behind Gromplejak I won't be able to do that. Also, I simply will not be playing my character according to your preferences, Objarni.
I could just as easily have criticized your tactical choice to begin singing this round as opposed to the seemingly more logical choice of attacking, since you are in the front row of combat. Had you neutralized the dog just as Sonja did, I could have healed Will next round.
The difference is, I don't get to play your character, and I'm not going to post in the discussion thread about what you should have done based on my perspective. This is a game, we're all part of it, and we all get to make choices. Sometimes those choices aren't perfect and we inadvertently step on one another's toes. That is to be expected from time to time.
What I have no time for is a player who feels the need to post three separate times about a single inconsequential action of combat that really won't have any impact on how this combat plays out in the end. Shoulda just let it go man.
I'm a pretty easy-going guy, but I find your harping on the such a trivial matter to be inappropriate and genuinely distasteful.
------------------
Jelani,
You were gracious to invite me after your player left and I thank you for the invitation. I'm sorry to say that I have no patience for what just happened, and that is not fun for me or anyone else reading along. I will not be posting any further in the game as a result. Luckily for everyone this happened early in the game so my absence won't cause many ripples. I apologize for any disruption caused by my soapbox speech and my character absence.
Óbjarni |
Stunned.
My posts were not intended to be harping only suggestions.
Please let me apologize. There's no reason to punish yourself and the game by dropping out.
I will never make another suggestion to you again.
DM Jelani |
Well, I can't force Hjalvar to stay, but I'd like it if he did.
It's not really appropriate to tell someone their "position is bad now" after they've explained their reasoning for taking an action.
Neither is it appropriate to rage quit in my opinion.
I don't like to play social moderator, which is why I declined to intervene in the back and forth. But, now that this happened I might as well say something.
I think it's important to remember this is a text based medium with no body language or voice queues from the other players. We are all grown adults who don't know each other well. I'm sure if we were all at a table we could have resolved this without any hurt/negative feelings. Since we are not at a table, in the future I'd appreciate it if everyone erred on the side of caution, and refrained from making value judgements about other player's actions. Politely worded suggestions are okay, but if they are refuted best to drop it.
Anyway, I'm not going to cry over spilled milk. If Hjalvar is willing to accept the apology and continue on, I'm happy to have him. If not, do you guys want me to recruit a replacement or run with 4?
Óbjarni |
I delayed posting because I was embarrassed about causing this mess and have been PMing Hjalvar trying to get him to reconsider leaving. He accepted my apology but believes his rant prevents him from returning.
I'd prefer 5 players. I don't want Hjalvar to leave. If he does, I think we need to recruit but I don't know if I would recruit now or later.
DM Jelani |
I don't really care either way (4 or 5). Seems at least half the group wants five though, so we'll prolly go with that. I will DMPC Hjalvar until he dies or you escape the prison, at which point he will run off.
If Zedth decides to return before either of those happen, he is still welcome with no hard feelings from my end. I've posted plenty of rants (probably inappropriate ones) in my day. Shiz happens.
Anyway, we'll handle it at the end of the prison bit.
Hjalvar, Bard of the North |
Hello everyone.
I've received a pair of friendly PMs from Objarni asking to bury the hatchet. I have decided to accept the hand of friendship and return to this game, based on the above posts.
I felt justified at the time I posted my rant, and despite this I felt a certain degree of shame that inevitably accompanies such outbursts. It didn't feel appropriate to rejoin after, but you are all apparently gracious enough to let bygones be bygones.
Thank you all for your patience. I apologize for the disruption my post and absence has caused.
Kellan, the cursed |
Classes started Monday, and today is my last day off work.
I'll resume a consistent posting schedule once I'm back at work, I think.
Also, I'll only be able to update in a some hours. Sorry for delay.
