10. Brethon's muscles return to normal. He drops his club, which disappears again. When he reaches into the air, another club appears and his muscles swell again. He then strikes at the ettin. Brethon's Club Attack: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 7 + 2 = 20 (flanking) Damage: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

The flank does the trick and Brethon's blow lands solidly! The ettin's right head glares at Brethon. Her left head glares at Rafaelis. "First the phantom, then club-boy, then you," the left head says to Rafaelis.

13. The ettin attacks Penelope, bringing her watery club down upon her fearsome visage. Jebline's Riverclub Attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16 (power attack) Damage: 1d6 + 13 ⇒ (3) + 13 = 16 The ettin just misses as Penelope darts out of the way. Jebline's Riverclub Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20 (power attack) Damage: 1d6 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19 The ettin lines up for another strike. She lands a solid blow, and Penelope dissovles in a puddle of ectoplasmic goo. The ettin steps toward the ravine. Both heads chortle. "One down, six to go," the right head says, still looking at Brethon.

Denge is next, followed by the blind and stunned goblin dog, then Professor Bellerophon and Bear'f.

Professor Bellerophon hears Rafaelis' shouted comment about the lights and glances from the goblin dog to the ettin and back again.

"Uhh..." he says, unsure of what to do. He decides to aid his friends as best he can while light remains. He pulls mightily on the crossbow's bowstring, straining to cock it quickly enough to load the bolt he holds in his other hand. Quick, quick, I need to fire... Fire! Light! LIGHT!

He eases his finger off the crossbow trigger and concentrates, causing light to blossom from the shaft of the crossbow bolt.

He moves quickly forward, towards the ettin atop the boulder. He stares up the boulder at the rope hanging in front of him.

Am I really going to climb this rope into combat with a two headed giant who just turned my friend Penelope into goo? thinks the academic with a large amount of trepidation.

Perhaps trepidation is too polite a word, too fancy a word. Professor Bellerophon feels his bowels loosen in fear.

Oh f~$~, oh s%$~. Oh f!$~.

Light spell on the crossbow bolt. Then move action to the base of the boulder where the rope is.

Professor Taldus Bellerophon wrote:

A light blossoms on the bolt in the crossbow that Professor Bellerophon is carrying. I have depicted the radius of the light spell on the map with an orange outline. For the moment, the spell is creating no appreciably different light than the dancing lights spell. Derek, you can move the outline so that if the Professor moves, or you want the center at a different corner of his square, you can adjust the position of the light.

One correction: It seems that the Professor may have taken too many actions - loading the crossbow, casting light, and moving. Either the light spell can be on the unloaded crossbow, or the crossbow can be loaded but the bolt unlit, or the Professor can only have taken a 5' step. I assume you would prefer the latter. Would you please move the Professor's token to where a 5' step would have taken him (or let us know that the spell is on the unladen crossbow or that the spell is uncast?

I meant for him to START loading, but not complete it, due to his Light spell epiphany. I was originally going to fire the crossbow, and then I experienced the same epiphany Professor Bellerophon did: he can cast Light! So I rewrote it to reflect his hesitation WHILE loading. He does not complete the loading. Apologies if it is confusing. So... standard=light, move action=move towards boulder.

How does the ettin look in terms of condition? The ettin has taken 31 hit points by my count.

Rafaelis wrote:

I'm not sure where you're getting 31 from. I have 21, and I double-checked just now, and the math is right. That includes 2 points from a hit the Forgotten One scored but should not have scored. You can find the current hit point damage each creature has taken in the initiative summary at the start of each round (or in the middle when I'm late with it as in round 9.

The ettin has three scratches on its shins from the Forgotten One's attacks, as well as a two light wounds on its side from Penelope's slam attacks. It looks like it could take quite a beating still, and it's certainly acting like the damage is not yet significant.

FYI, my rule of thumb is to tell you when a creature is bloodied (at or below half hp) and that it is "gravely wounded" or "on the verge of death" when one more minor blow will take it out. The ettin has not yet reached the bloodied condition.

Dark Archive

There was 7 hp damage from a ray of frost and the forgotten one by round 7. 14 hit points from two strikes by Penelope on round 8. 10 hit points by Brethon on round 9.

I really don't want to bring you down, but I am only mentioning it because this bugger is tough (it's a good scary fight) and this could make a difference once our heavy hitter is out.

Quote the posts if you want me to retcon it. I don't have another hour to check it a third time. I post these hit point summaries constantly so we don't have to go back multiple rounds. It would really help me out if you brought up these concerns when I do, rather than doing it days later. Pouring through old posts to revise the action is the evil opposite of fun.

Dude I just saw and commented. There's always going to be a lag time on responses. I am traveling right now so retconning isn't going to happen right now as I am posting by phone. I love you and respect what you are trying to do here but if I have to worry when I bring something up then the game isn't worth the candle for me either and I'll jus bow out. OK?

Something seems to be wrong with the thread. I can't see posts 863, 864, or 865. Oh well. I'll just ignore them and proceed.

The naive university professor crouches low in fear. He prays to the Lady of Graves to receive this double-headed thing quickly and early.

Art, if I can, I'd like to make my re-roll available to Bear'f, hoping that he can score a critical.

Rafaelis will withdraw from the goblin and go to the rope in such a route as to not provoke an attack of opportunity from the ettin and attempts to fast climb down the rope.

suprisingly he succeeds!

Rafaelis moves over to where the goblins with the alchemical bandoliers had fallen.

Rafaelis moves over to where the goblins with the alchemical bandoliers had fallen.

As Rafaelis climbs down the rope, the dancing lights wink out of existence, leaving only the illumination of Professor Bellerophon's crossbow bolt.

10. Brethon drops his club, which disappears, and summons another. His muscles shrink, then swell once more. He then moves to flank the ettin with Albern. Albern strikes, dealing another blow to the ettin! Brethon's Club Attack: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 7 + 2 = 23 (flanking) Damage: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 He hits as well! The ettin is now quite wounded!

The ettin is now bloodied, it previously had 31hp in damage. It took 10 from Bear'f, 8 from Albern, and 9 from Brethon, bringing it to 58 hp of damage. Brethon's blow bloodied it, so it started with between 100 and 116hp total.

13. The ettin howls with both heads and turns to Brethon, bringing its watery club down on him with all of its might. Jebline's Primary Riverclub Attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14 (power attacking) Damage: 1d6 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17 The blow strikes true, injuring Brethon's left shoulder, which is a bloody mess. Brethon is now bloodied. This is his first injury. He looks like he can take about one more hit like that and live. The ettin lines up for another strike.Jebline's Secondary Riverclub Attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21 (power attacking) Damage: 1d6 + 13 ⇒ (5) + 13 = 18 The second attack hits as well! Brethon goes down under the fury of the ettin's punishing blows, his life leaking out across the top of the Boulder. Brethon is down a total of 35hp, he is at -5hp and is unconscious, prone, and dying. The ettin's right head howls. It's left head looks down at Rafaelis. The ettin points her club at him and says, "You're next." She steps toward the rope.

Denge is next, followed by a stunned goblin dog, then Professor Bellerophon and Bear'f. (Albern delayed for movement, so is now before Brethon in the initiative order.)

Brett, when I pulled up the map to move Brethon and the ettin, I saw that the top of the rope was threatened by the ettin (she's standing on it now, following the 5' step on her turn). Therefore, there was no path from Rafaelis' starting square to the rope that did not provoke an attack of opportunity from the ettin.

Rafaelis can have taken the AoO. Jebline's Attack of Opportunity: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13 (power attacking) Damage: 1d6 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15 20% Miss Chance for Blur, low is a miss: 1d100 ⇒ 50. Alternately, he can have attempted a free climb down at normal speed, which succeeded, taking him about halfway down at another location, the actual distance down depending on where you want him to climb from (different sides of the Boulder take different movement to reach). Finally, he can have attempted to do a fast free climb down, in which case he failed, landed prone at the base of the Boulder, tookFalling Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5 falling damage, and stood back up. Which would you like? Please let me know which option and move Rafaelis appropriately. (I assume you're not going to pick the AoO.) If the option is to climb from another location, Jebline's 5' step will be toward that location.

I'll take the slow climb down leaving him in the middle of the climb down. I'll move him over to s spot that was clear of the threatened area on the map. He'll most likely get whacked next round but hopefully provoke attacks of opportunity to get at the annoying Mage.

It was necessary, but unfortunately unsuccessful. Goblin dogs have an AC of 15, 19 vs. ranged attacks when prone.

Jebline's Secondary Riverclub Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13 Damage: 1d6 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15

I presume that Albern's AC against the ettin is 20 while fatigued, due to the AC penalty and the deflection bonus (17+4-1=21). Is that correct?

Denge is next. However, as he is unconscious and dying and needs only to make a DC 14 Con check to stabilize, I will go on with the goblin dog.

I agree. I count 3 diagonal squares vertically and 2 horizontal squares to Denge (20'+10'=30') and 3 diagonal squares veritically, 1 diagonal square horizontally, and 2 horizontal squares to the ettin (20'+10'+10'=40').

Professor Bellerophon sees the light wash over the goblin dog, Bear'f, Brethon, Albern, and Denge. Denge's eyes flutter open, as do Brethon's. Bear'f's wounds heal instantly. Denge stops bleeding and his wounds heal somewhat (currently down 9hp, so at 1 hp). Brethon's wounds also heal somewhat (currently down 29 hp, so also at 1 hp).

The goblin dog and Professor Bellerophon are unaffected. Both were uninjured. The wash of blue light subsides before it reaches the ettin.

11. Brethon was in delay because he was stable when his turn passed. He stays in delay, but says, quietly, "Albern, distract them while we get up."
[ooc]To be crystal clear, Brethon is asking Albern to provoke attacks of opportunity from the ettin and the goblin so Brethon and Denge can stand and so that Brethon doesn't have to attack from prone.

Bear'f is next, followed by the last goblin [Green].

I didn't leave my 30ft radius drawing on Roll20, but I think that might be advisable next time. :-)

Bear’f moves swiftly away and the fires an arrow…

Free action: 5’ step north
Standard action: firing arrow at Goblin Dog 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 241d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

Please do. With the vertical changes it's a little more complicated, since it's not a straight horizontal distance, but if you're using a template, the visual representation will make it easier for me to confirm.

The arrow sinks deeply into the goblin dog's chest. Blood spurts from the wound! It staggers about.

The goblin dog is staggered!

9. The final goblin [Green] steps around Denge (provoking an attack of opportunity if Denge is somehow armed after falling unconscious and dropping whatever he was holding before). He attacks Albern. Green Goblin Dogslicer Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13 Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4 However, he misses!

Rafaelis is next, followed by the Ettin and Denge.
