"Umm, gentlemen, if I may. Aren't gobins, ettins, etc nocturnal? No, no, I'm sure of it. It is late afternoon now. Perhaps we ought to accelerate our plans and enter the lair now, while they're sleeping or quiescent."

Speaking to Taldus, "What you say is true, however according to Tark Toughtoe's intelligence and was evidenced by the golin attack of yesterday, these brigands set up ambushes during the day when their prey, that would be us, is on the move. Of course knowing the layout of their layer may provide us with more to go on. Remember though we will require light to go into the cave which would severely hinder our attempts at stealth. I hope Penelope does not get discovered in the process. The loss of the element of surprise may out weigh the value of the intelligence gained. Perhaps she will discover another way inside? Rafaelis stops speaking and ponders.

Wow, Rafaelis must have received a university education or its equivalent, thinks the Professor, when he notices Rafaelis doesn't blink at his use of "quiescent."

In the Verduran Forest, Taldor - Oathday, 2 Gozran, 4715 A.R.

After several minutes, Penelope's incorporeal form rises from the earth near where you have been hiding. Her form gains substance in the late afternoon sun. Despite the warm spring day, Penelope radiates cold. Her face is more pale than usual, and her eyes shine with fear.

"I went into the Deep Cave, as you bid, Denge."

There is a link to a map at the top of the page that you can use for reference as Penelope tells her tale.

Someone gives Penelope paper and ink. She draws a crude map as she describes what she has seen.

"The cave is the mouth of a tunnel. There are signs that the goblins keep watch there, but none are there now." She speaks quickly, as if afraid. Here she stops as if to catch her breath. Her hand trembles noticeably as she draws.

"The tunnel plunges into the rock, as the Forgotten One described. It is dry and mostly clean, though I did see pieces of broken crates here and there. It leads downward and northwest, I think. It comes to a bend where many boxes and barrels are stacked, like a barricade." She points to the spot on the bottom of her map where the tunnel curves back on itself, toward the southwest.

"It splits there, and there is a second, narrow tunnel that runs parallel for several yards. It had several more crates and barrels in it."

"The tunnel turns back to the north and levels out. It widens into a great chamber, more than 10 yards across. There are numerous tunnels leading from it." Penelope hesitates and looks to Denge for reassurance.

She then continues. "There are sleeping bags and blankets and clothes strewn about. There were many goblins sleeping there. I'm not sure how many. Maybe half a score? I was hesitant to stay exposed for long."

"A wide tunnel plunges down a series of broad steps to the east," she says, pointing to the tunnel connecting the two large caves on her map. "The ettin rests in the lower cave. She has boxes and barrels set up like furniture. There are remains of a nest there, too, and a large, rotting, feathered body with a beak. It has been partially eaten and reeks of death." She shudders at the memory of the ettin and the monstrous corpse. She holds her delicate nose as she describes the smell.

"I spotted a ledge, high above the floor of the lower cave, to the northeast. There I found two bedrolls and some equipment. There is no easy way up there."

"To the north of the goblin cave is a small cave with two more goblins. One wears a necklace of what look like bear claws. It has a silver symbol of one of their knives hanging from it."

"To the northwest, small tunnels run deeper and eventually reach water."

"To the southwest, larger tunnels branch off. There are four ugly, naked dog-like creatures there."

"The whole cave is dark, Denge. And cold. I was so afraid!" Penelope trembles.

Dark Archive

Rafaelis perks up when he hears about the the lack of guards but upon hearing about a cave with ten or so goblins with two more in an adjoining cave his enthusiasm dampens,"We could conceivably handle the goblins in the main cave if we caught them unawares, but with the two additional, presumably spell casters along with goblin dogs... seems we would be hard pressed. If we defeat them, there is still the ettin to contend with who will most likely be roused and ready if not joining the fight." He pauses to think, points at the map "The two sleeping bags up on the high ledge, here, surely belonged to the werebats. We could conceivably use these more narrow parts of the cave, here and here, to our advantage against the ettin, forcing her to squeeze to get at us. What do all of you think?"

Brethon nods at Rafaelis' comments. "That barricade might work both ways, too."

Albern nods his head, in an attempt to look sage as he tries to follow the explanation and the map.

"Yep, yes, right, ok! Got it!" When Rafaelis forwards his idea he nods in excited agreement. "Great! I like it! I'm small, I can fit in lots of small tunnels while big mean ettins try to get me."

Professor Bellerophon's face grows paler and paler as Penelope describes all the goblins and the ettin.

He perks up when Denge speaks. "Yes, divide and conquer. Good idea. Let's be honest with each other. I'm a professor of anatomy. Rafaelis is a caster of some skills, but not a front line bruiser by any means. And Penelope and Denge aren't either. This is going to be a fight. We need better odds. Divide and conquer."

Brethon follows the discussion intently, "So we are going to wait until some of them come out and jump them?"

He glances at the clearing on the top of the hill where the entrance to the Deep Cave lies. "It's really exposed here. If we want to set up an ambush, we could do it from above the cave or on that trail." He points to the trail that the goblins and ettin have made, hauling goods up the hill.

"I could cast entangle to keep them from charging us or going back for help. If we attack from over the cave mouth, I could do it at the entrance. If we attack on the trail, I could do it somewhere that we will see them coming as far as a few hundred yards off, though that might be too far and difficult to find in these woods."

Dark Archive

Rafaelis listens to Brethon and nods,"We should ambush them on the trail away from the cave mouth. Tark said that they set up ambushes and with the wagons not moving they might return to the cave or go looking for the wagons. I don't want to risk the wagons being attacked with us not present. We should attack not much farther than 40 to 50 feet away . The Entangle would be good to prevent escape. looking at Brethon "You could center the effect behind them so as to force them forward and engage us and make escape difficult. Surely there is a spot on the trail such as a ravine where they could get funneled in while we can have some high ground?

Brethon nods. He looks down the hill toward the canal. "There is a spot like that, but we would have to hide and let them pass, then attack them from behind."

I know it's been a while, and I'm very sorry about that. However, the entrance to the deep cave is at the top of a hill that commands a view of the canal. The goblins' trips to the cave with cargo have created crude trails, more like deer runs, through the forest to points up and downcanal from the Deep Cave. The wagons are currently upcanal from the Deep Cave.

Dark Archive

Rafaelis gives Brethon a look of gratitude and affection, "I am so glad I cajoled you into coming!" turning to look at the others he says, "Seems like we have the makings of a plan. If all are in agreement, let us repair to prepare. We will need to disguise our scent should they have the dogs with them. Perhaps the forgotten one will assist by making any stragglers forget? Wouldn't THAT be amusing "

Guys, I need you to say what you are doing. I can't make the decision for you. So far your characters have discussed it, but I have to set up the combat in Roll20 and can't do it until I know where're you're going. Are you going to the ravine? Are you going to wait where you are? Are you going to climb up on top above the cave mouth? Or are you going in, either with stealth or on a frontal assault? The decision will determine what map I set up.

"Ahem," says Professor Bellerophon tentatively. "The ravine sounds good. HOWEVER, may I suggest another possibility (at the risk of delaying us)? Why don't we wait near the cave mouth, allow a small portion of them to exit, then cast Entangle to prevent the rest from exiting. We finish off those outside the cave and then either escape or attack the rest from the safety of distance? Would that work?"

I do not want to delay us further, but thought maybe this was overlooked in our planning. I'm am completely happy hearing a "no" and we just go to the ravine and set up there.

"I vote for the ravine ambush. The cave area was stripped of foliage due to all the traffic, so no entangle. Besides, attacking at the cave mouth still leaves us with the problem of all the enemies in the cave coming out after us at once including the ettin and we are not faster than them. After this first group we can always wait to pick off more that come out for their friends. Strangely enough once the goblins are taken care of I think our best option against the ettin are using the more narrow areas of the cave against her."

Cool!

The ravine map is up. I need to know whether Geb and Nex are with you or whether you left them with Tark and Bray and Mr. Gribb at the wagons.

You may place yourselves where you will on the ravine map. Here is the description.

You travel back down the hill. The canopy of trees cuts out most of the late afternoon light.

There is dim illumination everywhere in the ravine except on the large stones in the center of the map on the left side (aka "The Boulder" and on the large stones at the top of the map in the center (aka "The Outcropping").

The Wash
A steep cut cleaves the hillside. The bottom is damp and full of leaves. It appears that the spring rains wash down the hill here.

The stream on the map is really just a lot of fallen leaves, which are damp in the middle. The ravine is steep. A DC 5 Acrobatics check will be required if anyone tries to charge or run up or down it.

The Foliage
To each side of the ravine, thick trees and bushes make travel nearly impossible. The dense foliage on either side of the ravine is difficult terrain.

The Outcropping
At the head of the ravine, toward the top of the hill, is a large stone, an outcropping of the hill's rock. A crude tripod fashioned from poles lashed together and a block and tackle stand on the outcropping, overlooking the ravine. It is cleverly obscured with branches and is difficult to distinguish from the surrounding trees at a distance. Several ropes at the top and several shattered crates at the bottom indicate that the goblins and ettin use this route to move cargo, or at least have in the past.

On the west side of the outcropping the rock forms a natural ramp that curves toward the south, ending just above some bushes. It is clear that the goblins the ettin, and the goblin dogs have frequently traveled this route, as the bushes at the base of the ramp have been trampled.

The outcropping rises above the surrounding treetops and is fully exposed to the sun. Standing on it, you can see not only the cave mouth at the top of the hill, but also much of the ravine below, and the canal off in the distance.

Standing on the outcropping, you can see into the ravine. The outcropping is about 25 feet above the floor of the ravine. Foliage obscures part of the floor of the ravine. Anyone in the ravine has a 20% miss chance against anyone on the outcropping, and vice versa. Anyone standing on the outcropping would also have cover from anyone standing in the ravine.

The ramp is steep and counts as difficult terrain. No climb check is required to scrabble up or down it.

The Boulder
Toward the center of the ravine, on the west side, another large boulder juts forth from the hillside. Though its top does not pierce the canopy the way the outcropping at the head of the ravine does, it is nonetheless higher than the highest branches of the surrounding trees. While it does not look out over the canal, it does afford an excellent view of most of the ravine, except for the top of the outcropping at the top. Because it is so high, the afternoon sun breaks through there.

The outcropping on the right side of the map is about 15' above the floor of the ravine. There is bright illumination on the top. Since the outcropping is not so high, the foliage offers no concealment. However, anyone standing on the Boulder has cover from attacks from below, and vice versa.

Climbing either the Outcropping or the Boulder will require a DC 15 climb check.

The ravine ranges from 5 to 40 feet wide. The narrowest point is where a small boulder stands near the Boulder. The ravine is about 130' long, from the base of the Outcropping to the bottom of the map. There is about a 20' drop in elevation along that distance. In other words, the bottom of the ravine is about 20 feet lower than the top. At the bottom, the surrounding ridges level off and the hillside becomes more smooth. There is about a 20% grade the whole way down. Just here there are ridges and a wash creating an easier path down this section of the hill.

As stated above, you may place yourselves where you wish on the map. It is about 5 pm on this spring day when you finish exploring the ravine and making any simple preparations. If you wish to make any complicated preparations, more time may pass, depending on the preparation.

Ah, so they are coming from the North edge of the map then?

Camouflage! To be the invisible gnomish hunter... that is the key to victory. The sailor-cum-goblin slayer busily smears mud over his body, placing leaves and twigs in his hair and clothes and blackening his polearm blade. Albern secrets himself in the bushes underneath the outcropping, ready to spring upon the treacherous goblins after they pass, and taking them from behind!

At the moment you're just setting up, but the path they've worn through the forest, from the canal up the hill to the Deep Cave indicates that they tend to use this route and one other. This is the route that would lead toward your wagons.

"I think we should all stick together, for healing purposes and protection, I suggest either we all ambush at the outcropping or at the boulder. And I vote for the boulder."

"I think the large outcropping from the west and the small boulder creates an excellent choke point in the middle of the ravine."

The can be seen if they do not hide. The top of the Outcropping is in direct sunlight 25 feet above the floor of the ravine. The Boulder is under the highest branches of the canopy, 15' above the floor of the ravine, but 20' lower than the top of the Outcropping (as the ravine falls 20' over its length and the Boulder is about halfway down).

There is some obscurement from foliage closer to the Boulder, granting 20% concealment to anyone on top of it as viewed from the Outcropping.

There is also dim illumination in all areas of the ravine other than the top of the Outcropping and the Boulder, which also grants 20% concealment. Therefore, you can hide just about anywhere on the map, other than the top of the Outcropping.

Rafaelis wrote:

Roger, thanks!

Joe, Penelope's view of the Outcropping will be blocked from her current position, as that part of the Boulder is lower than the main portion. The main portion is blocking her line of sight.

Sometime after ten o'clock, after you have waited nearly six hours in the ravine, you hear noises coming from toward the top of the hill, guttural muttering and the noise of creatures moving through the forest.

For Albern Fee Only:
In the distance, Albern catches a glimpse of a titanic humanoid form crashing through the forest toward the outcropping. It has dark, knotted skin and two heads. It is draped in dirty red cloth, perhaps velvet. It is about 100' feet off.

Keep in mind, you are scattered throughout the ravine, so your ability to speak to one another is limited. Unless you raise your voices, or are standing next to someone, you cannot speak to one another.

For Albern Fee only:
At the very edge of his darkvision, Albern Fee sees a single goblin standing on the edge of the Outcropping, looking down into the ravine.

You hear the forgotten one approaching the Boulder.

"Don't shoot, don't shoot, it's me, Franuhfonduh," it whispers.

It climbs the Boulder and stops between Rafaelis and Penelope, "The outcropping says the ettin is up there, with four goblins. They're using that contraption. The Outcropping is really proud it can carry so much weight!"

"And the ramp says that there are four goblin dogs with goblins on them coming down. It's complaining that one dog marked it."

From the noise and the report, it would seem that four goblins astride goblin dogs are coming down the ramp, that the ettin is on the Outcropping, and that six goblins are standing on the Outcropping, using the block and tackle.

You may each take a round of actions, if you wish. If you intend to take no actions, say so. If anyone of the PCs attacks, a surprise round will immediately commence, and I will roll initiative and put the attacker at the top of the order.

Dark Archive

Rafaelis wispers, Thank you Franufunduh. Once the Goblins on dogs reach the bottom of the stream by the boulder I will cast dancing lights, Brethon will then cast Entangle so beware. The party is about to commence!. Rafaelis will maintain his readied action.

Albern will squat on his heels under the brush, waiting until the goblins come into the killing zone before bursting out of the brush to cleave goblin heads with his new bardiche.

action for when things happen:

rage, attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 damage, magical: 1d8 + 3 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 3 + 1 = 9

You all hear the goblins clamber down the rope from the outcropping to the floor of the ravine. As they do so, you hear goblin dogs come down the ramp and leap to the floor of the ravine.

Soon Albern and Penelope between them can see four goblin dogs with riders approaching on the floor of the ravine and four goblins coming behind them.

You all hear, but do not see, the ettin coming down the ramp.

"The ramp stones don't like the big one," the Forgotten One whispers. "She's too heavy for them."

Before the shooting starts, I note that Rafaelis and Albern have hidden themselves, but Professor Bellerophon, Bear'f, Denge, and Penelope have not stated they are doing so. Are you standing in the open, because if you are, I need to roll for initiative as the first goblins see you. However, if you are hidden, I need stealth rolls or to hear you say you are taking 10. Brethon is hiding. His take 10 Stealth is 9.

Brethon crouches in the bushes alongside Albern, but they do not conceal him too well. He spoke to the others before the goblins arrived about the optimal placement of the entangle. The proposed placement of the entangle is on the map in green.

So are Penelope and Denge hiding? Is Professor Bellerophon? Is Bear'f? If so, are they rolling or taking 10? Once I have the answer, I'll make the rolls to see whether team evil fails to see the PCs and walks into the kill zone or whether they see the PCs and react to their presence first.
