1 person marked this as a favorite.

It's a warm evening in Sasserine. The winter has passed, and lately the weather has been nice. Not as cold as in the winter but not yet so hot and humid as Sasserine is used to be.
Here and there there are people working to build parade floats of giant Locustlike creatures.
It is almost the Locustfall festival, a time where Sasserine rejoice for the news came from afar.
A band of heroes sealed the Worldwound.
Deskari, the locust, the prince of Demons has fallen, and the greatest threat to the world has been vanquished forever.
Not that Sasserine was anywhere close to the Worldwound.
Nonetheless Sasserine citizens do jump at the occasion to celebrate at anything after 50 years of confinement and oppression.
While the city is busy working for the festival to come, each and everyone of you were approached by a Wizened-looking Halfling woman who introduces herself as Kora Whistlegap.
She presents to each of you a letter from her employer, Lavinia Vanderboren.

ok, here we go. You are all separate right now, an you don't know each other (but you may have heard about the things that made you famous lately)
Feel free to ask questions to Kora, To ask for knowledge rolls or do pretty much everything you may think to do in the next 24 hours.
Whenever you are ready Just write that your character go to the Vanderboren mansion (which is pretty much railroaded, the AP won't even start if you don't). When you are all ready I'll set up the scene for you and give you a chance to introduce to each other.

Erick had mostly been exploring the city since his return to it, he'd enjoyed a bit of notoriety, especially in the Shadowshores, after his little run in with the kidnapper and slaver.

In fact, several of the unfortunate man's friends had become unfortunate themselves, over the last month or so, enough so that Erick had developed a decent little reputation as a hard but fair man who was not to be trifled with lightly. Such a reputation was a good one to have in the Shadowshores, and Erick cultivated it with a grim scowl.

However, he was born and raised noble in this city, so when the halfling approached and spoke politely to him, he doffed his hat and gave a bow. "Greetings, Ms. Whistlegap. Give me a moment to read this over then." He reads the letter quickly, then goes back and rereads it a second time.

Finally, he nods and looks at the woman. "Well, Ms. Whistlegap, may I inquire who your employer is? Not her name, obviously that is here. But who she is, what business she is in? And if I might ask, where is Festival Street and Blue Skink Lane?" His voice is gravelly, but he's polite. I think I remember that being in the Cudgel, but it's been 10 years, better to confirm than show up in the wrong area.

Shadow Lodge

The old halfling nods at Erick's request.
"Of course. I have been on the service of the Vanderboren family for more than 30 years. The Vanderboren used to be Explorers, adventurers, and of course one of the lesser noble families of Sasserine. The little miss, Lavinia, found herself orphaned a few months ago. She's a sweet child but also strong. She is working so hard to run the family estate all on her own devices despite grieving for the sudden disappearance of her parents." Kora lower her gaze, a little saddened by the recent events she is recalling. She slowly shakes her head before turning back to Erick.
"I'm sorry.." Says the halfling regaining composure "anyway... you may find Festival street and Blue sink lane on the southern part of the easternmost island in the Merchant District. Will you be so kind to attend?"

Erick strokes his chin, looking at the wizened old gnome thoughtfully. "Orphaned huh? Not a fun bit of life that." Don't let the sob story sway you, idiot. You can't swing a dead cat in this town without hitting an orphan, you twit. Hell, that boy you busted his nose for is probably an orphan. Erick shakes his head, as if something were buzzing about his head. "Young miss huh? How old is she? I'm assuming old enough to legally spend money, else I wouldn't be getting a call for a job or something." He eyes the old gnome for a moment. Sense Motive

If the gnome seems on the up and up

Erick finally nods. "Alright, tell your mistress I'll attend her invitation. I'll warn you up front though, I don't surrender my weapons to anyone. I'll allow a peace ribbon, but I've had one too many run ins with people I don't know who insisted on no weapons in order to try to steal my belongings, and I don't know your young mistress just yet."

Shadow Lodge

The old halfling smiles and blushes a little bit "I am sorry. I have seen the young miss brought to this world, learning to walk and to speak. I guess I do her a bit of disservice in describing her as little miss. She's 21, and the heir of Vanderboren's household. She's of course more than entitled to administer and spend the family wealth. I apologize for the misunderstanding..."

Then, when Erick mention his intention to present himself armed the halfling is taken aback a little. You see a veil of esitation and her face grow a little pale.
You think she's simply not used to deal with armed people and the level of prudence and suspect you are showing. You don't see any indication of foul play or trickery in her invitation. nor in her description of Lavinia. She really look like an innocent old halfling maid who is deeply attached to her mistress
"Well.. of course... I'm sure miss Vanderboren will have no objections. I hope your weapons will not be a burden to you at the dinner table. But if the idea of surrendering your weapons troubles you, as our guest, it would be our obligation to make sure that you don't feel uncomfortable under Vanderboren's roof."

Erick gives a bark of laughter. "Generally, I usually hang them from the back of the chair during meals. At hand, but not in the way. My apologies if it offends, or is remarkable. I'm afraid I travel in a different world than the young miss." His eyes twinkle a bit. Diplomacy

He then rubs his chin again. "Anything special I should know for this? Bring a wine, don't bring a wine, bring a date, don't bring a date?"

Shadow Lodge

"Nothing to worry about. After all, the reason for your invitation is probably tied to your experience as a man of action...
I think the lady expects you to be way more comfortable with weapons than I will ever be."

"As for the dinner. I'm pretty sure the mistress wanted to propose you a job, it's probably not the right dinner to bring a date along. And we have the wine quite covered for the evening. I hope you like roasted suckling pig." she adds with a note of pride.

Gavin lounges against a wall outside his family's recently rented apartment, taking in the festival preparations, when Kora approaches. Always having preferred the heat of a Sasserine summer, the young ethnic Chel cups his hand over his mouth and nose and breathes into it, warming his perpetually cool nose. Gavin looks askance at Kora as she introduces herself and frowns as he reads the note she hands over. Vanderboren, Vanderboren... Where have I heard this name before? She must have connections to find me. Father, mother and I have been laying low since the fire. Well, let us see where this goes..." Knowledge local or nobility check if applicable, please.

Flashing his most disarming smile, Gavin bows deep and addresses the woman. "Ms. Whistlegap, it is truly a pleasure! You are an industrious woman so early in the morning, I must say. I, on the other hand, was up way too late, have yet to make my morning prayers, break my fast or have Cayden Cailean's first blessing of the day. Care to join me for a bite and an ale? There's a decent tavern down the street. Their porter isn't as good as mine, mind you, but it'll do in a pinch. And the turtle stew is quite good."

Turning on his heel, Gavin begins walking down the street, figuring the halfling will humor him, if her employer really desires his attendance at her dinner.

Shadow Lodge

When you read the name Vanderboren it comes to mind that is indeed the name of one of the minor noble families of the Merchant district.
But beyond that, the first thing you remember is a recent event.
Around a month ago, you heard news about a tragic fire that claimed the lives of Verik and Larissa Vanderboren. The Vanderborens were survived by their two children, Vanthus and Lavinia.

The old halfling smiles at your invitation and bows her head a little.
"I guess I have some time to spare, and the turtle soup sounds nice. But I will have to return to my chores before long. There so much work to do at home lately. I didn't even started to decorate the manor for the festival. Lady Vanderboren..." The halfling woman pauses for a moment.
"I am afraid that festivities are not among her priorities at the moment..."
After a brief moment of bleakness the halfling regain her smile.
"Sorry for rambling. By all means, lead the way" she said, and proceeded to follow Gavin.

Inside of the Six Swords Tavern, Tessa has had a one ale more than she should have and has gotten herself a little bit tipsy. Having just notched another successful bout in the arena, she had been escorted to her favorite watering hole to celebrate with some well-to-do Lords who made a few coin from tonight's event.

The 'event' was closer than she cares to admit. Closer than any of her other more recent 'events'.

Forget events, this was a damn fight for my life!

Someone had found some creature called a Morlock. Or Moreloch. Or more-whatever it was called-it was hideous looking pale humanoid thing with big bulging eyes.

And apppparrrenntttlly they neglected to tell me that it could climb walls and jump like a--

Tessa is shaken from the memory when a nearby patron shakes her arm and says, "Say-it 'gain, 'gain!"

Tessa looks down at her ale and ponders whether she should finish it.

Already half into it, might as well take advantage while they're flowing!

Slightly tipsy acrobatics: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Tessa slams home the rest of the ale and deftly hops up onto the chair. She slips a feather from her hat, miming her rapier and begins to work through movements as she hops from chair to chair, spinning across the bar.

After several minutes of embellishing on her reenactment, her right leg grows weak from where that ... thing bit her. She excuses herself from the tavern and steps outside to get some fresh air. As she steps out she nearly bumps into an elderly halfling who looks up at her and smiles as if she had just found something she was looking for.

After brief introductions and a quick review of the letter, Tessa begins to wonder what type of opportunity it is that she is going to be presented with. Whatever the opportunity, she is sure that there is some coin to be had on the other end of it.

With a grand sweeping bow Tessa responds, "Ms. Whistle-uh,Whistle.... Whistle.."

She pinches the bridge of her nose as she tries to clear the fog and remember what the halflings name was.

Perhaps I shouldn't have finished that last ale after all.

"It it would be by pleasure to attend the dinner. I am truly at the Lady's service. Would you happen to have any additional information on what the opportunity entails perhaps?"

Even on a busy festival evening, getting a private table at the Pelican was no problem for Kutsya. It was the only positive to her newfound notoriety. The stares and the whispers still set her on edge -- she'd been invisible all her life, so being recognized and remembered was unsettling.

So when the halfling approached her, letter in hand, Kutsya accepted it with a snarl.

"What's this then? I don't do interviews."

She opened it and read the letter, which did nothing to improve her mood. "Opportunity uniquely suited to your skills," it says. I'm not a killer. Not like that. Not for money.

Kutsya almost balled the letter up and threw it back at the halfling. She was working steady now, and didn't need this kind of complication in her life. But then she remembered the look in her foreman's eye as she reported in this morning. He gave her work because he was afraid of what would happen if he left her idle, not because he wanted her around. How long did she want to live off of fear and pity?

"Festival Street and Blue Skink Lane? What time should I be there? Is there anything I should bring?"

Shadow Lodge

Kora smiles when she finally found Tessa Steele. The girl was obviously tipsy and while she never cut suck an impressive figure given her height, the halfling could remember quite a lot of evenings in her early years were she was the one making a show out of herself, helped by a generous dose of alcohol. Actually, she was told about those evenings, she didn't remember much of them the day before.
"I am afraid I don't" replies the halfling. "As a matter of fact I think I get the essence of the message but I never even read the letter myself. Lady Vanderboren just asked me to give five letters to five people and informed me that we will hopefully have you for dinner tomorrow evening to discuss business. The young lady have been quite busy lately. Honestly, I did not thought about asking."

Five letters? She means for us to put on a group show then, does she now?

A pained expression flashes across Gavin's face, and he blushes a bit when the knowledge of the Vandeborens comes to mind, embarrassed at having brought forth such a painful memory for the woman. Of course, the fire! Surely many fires happen in any given year in Sasserine, but could this be why the Lady Vanderboren wants to see me? Could her fire and the arson of my parents' tavern be related? Are the Vanderborens Caydenites?

Holding the door open for Kora, Gavin gives her another smile as she enters the tavern, a run-down dockside tavern called Drowned And Out.

"It's not much to look at, but do trust me on the turtle stew. I'm sure you know what good a little well-made comfort food can do for one's disposition."

Sidling up to the bar, and helping Kora into the human-sized seat next to him, Gavin orders two turtle stews and two porters, and when Kora protests, he wags a finger and gives her a tut of mock disapproval. "Now, now, one drink will do wonders for the morning cobwebs. Two, certainly, you'd need a nap, but I won't keep you that long."

Gavin makes small talk until the stew arrives, and then taking his copper cup from his pack, the young man empties his porter into the dented stein and holding the cup to his bowed head, says a quick benediction. "Cayden Cailean, friend of drinkers and father of orphans, find this lovely woman safely home today, with plenty of time to see her chores done to satisfaction."

Raising his stein to Kora's glass, he turns to the elderly woman, and suddenly serious, says, in halfling,"diru al mi, Kora - kaj mi malamas supertiri - sed estas la Vanderborens geamikoj el la pintoj taso?"

Erick watches the gnome woman toddle off, and when she's well and truly gone, he leans back against the wall and gives a whistle. Heh, wonder which of the scamps will get here first. At least they're not fighting each other over the work anymore. Erick had stopped paying any of the street urchans that had obvious signs of fighting on them, bruises, busted knuckles. That had stopped that nonsense really quick. He'd also been watching for urchins who might have gotten a friend to beat up people, questioning them. Once he'd found 4 or 5 he could trust, he'd gotten them together and explained they'd all get work, but only as long as they obeyed his rules.

Hope you don't mind me putting one in, I'm assuming finding urchins willing to run errands for a copper or two in the Shadows isn't going to be hard.

Once one of the street urchins comes up, he gives them a cool smile. "How's it going Nori? Your mom feeling better?" He asks the grimy faced girl. After waiting for her answer, he'll continue. "So, you heard anything about some nobles called the Vanderborens that died recently?" Whether she knows anything or not, he'll ask her to ask around, discretely, with a promise of a silver if she can bring him some good information, a few coppers if not. Nothing to put herself in danger though.

Shadow Lodge

When Kora approached Kutsya, she was a little wary.
Personally, the halfling didn't hear the stories about her, but she seemed a little gruff and she was kinda worried to bother her, and as a matter of fact she was kinda right about that as her first reaction seemed less than pleased with the content of the letter.
Then something seemed to change in the dwarf expression.
She seemed vaguely interested, and asked information.
The halfling smiled to the dwarven lady and answered.
"Yes, Festival Street and Blue Skink Lane, on market district, on the easternmost island. Around eight would be fine. And do not worry, lady Vanderboren requires nothing but your company."

Shadow Lodge

this is for Gavin
Gavin finds the two tables and help the halfling to get on her seat.
He order for her and he really expects her to decline given the early hour and the small stature, but he soon find the old halfling to be less shy around food and drinks than he might expect.
The halfling is more than happy to dive into the food and drinks, and gives no comment about them except for a very satisfied smile on her face.
As you ask Kora about the Vanderboren she detach herself from her bowl of stew (her beverages are already finished by now) and with the same smile she answers in halfling.
"Formally the Vanderboren family worships Abadar. But they had an healthy respect for all the 7 major deities of Sasserine. Verik and Larissa, miss Lavinia's parents, were adventurers. And I can see them having a soft spot in their heart for Cayden Cailean's ideals. But they were always on some journey, and in a sense they were kinda secular. They weren't very public in their devotion, so I can only say what I presume.
One thing I'm sure about. They resented the divide.
Fellow people of Sasserine at each others throats over things happened more than 50 years ago.
They hated that."

Shadow Lodge

@Tessa
"We have dinner around eight. umh... I don't think is too formal. She just heard about you and hopes she has a proposition you may find interesting. But otherwise it's just a dinner, nothing pretentious."

@Erick
The street urchin doesn't know about the Vanderboren, but she takes off on the streets of Shadowshore and she finds you a few hours later, panting. She obviously ran to come back to you, eager to receive her prize for a work well done.
"I know about the Vandeboen!" she says with a triumphant smile.
"there was a ship... all new and shiny... on the bay.. and then BOOM!!!
and the ship was on fire. and then the bay was on fire too. and all was stinky like the old whaling guild.
And the ship was of the Vandeboen. and two of them was on the ship when it burned. One's name is Verik, and the other is Larissa.
And they were all noble. They are from the market district."

The little urchin looks at Erick with the eyes of a puppy and extends a palm to him.
"I am being helpful... Right?"

Erick is sitting in a tavern when the urchin comes back. He chuckles, and takes out 10 coppers, being discreet and letting the urchin's body hide the coins from onlookers as he slips them into her palm. "Very helpful. Make sure you give your mother at least 6 of those, so she can buy groceries." He tells her sternly in a soft voice. "Now, take tomorrow off, let one of the others have a chance." He tells her, then motions for the tavern keeper to give the girl a plate of food on him. He finishes up his meal and pays the tavern keeper for the food. Hmm, so, big ship, blew up, with whale grease or oil on it. Good way to hide disappearances, no bodies in something like that. Of course, also a good way to ensure your targets don't survive too, but it seems like overkill for that, considering all the sidereal damage. Then again, there's plenty that don't care about the damage they cause others. Interesting.

I'll update my alias to indicate the money spent today, and update the character sheet when I level up. EDIT: Forgot to post, Erick is ready for dinner when everyone else catches up.

A round halfling sits on a high stool in the Hakeswill Inn, not far from the warm fire. His once white robes are grey with mud for trim, with many rolls of cloth to hide the rolls below.

The worn slippers are curled at the toe and again have seen much better days. But they both dance about as the rotund storyteller continues to talk of the Pie and the Maiden. A small circle of much larger citizens are busy enjoying their drinks as they listen. Further away from him, Bedu takes the odd conversation as a challenge but then some people may have heard his tale before.

"...so the gallant dwarf ran down the street in his underclothes. Pie in hand, plums dropping like cobbles. Chased by the mad father, shouting words. Words I cannot repeat to you, my friends. From the window the young maiden sighed for she had lost such a precious thing. And as for the dwarf he gave up pie stealing and did what anyone else would do -he became an innkeep!

Like Obadiah here, the owner of this fine establishment. Where food is good and in abundance, drinks will make you merry and stories help the digestion. All for three silvers!"

As Kora approaches at the end, Bedu hops down to meet her. He cannot get too close. Its the belly. But he takes the letter then reads it slowly. The brown eyes light up at the end and then he frowns, " tell your mistress I would be honoured like the Sarenrae's smile on the dawnflower to come. But alas Obadiah here needs me this evening? No, oh that it fine then, I have the luck of a happy Desnan tonight he lets me come."

Bedu calls for two small drinks and takes the aged Kora to a proper table while they wait, talking of the lovely drinks as he goes. Once settled and drinks and toasts have satisfied good taste, he gets to the meat of the matter;

"I have questions, oh mistress of my heart for today. Tell me how did you find this poor storyteller hidden in these shadows? And a little of your Lady, her family, wealth, faith and likes."

No need to repeat what I have already read. Bedu is making sense motive and knowledge local thoughts now.

"Poor Bedu is eager for a fine meal with such a fine lady. I shall buy a new robe to honour her. It is time for these rags to stop clinging to me so hard, like my last girlfriend you know! Now I am sure you are busy and I have shopping to do. Until tonight sweet Kora, and may your heart look forward to our meeting again. Just like mine."

Bedu kisses her hand and clasps it to his heaving fat bosom briefly.

On the way to the dinner, Bedu leaves early enough to make time for a visit to Garno Climmar. He stops off to see how the half orc and his girlfriend are. He also checks to find out what the news on the docks are, especially anything related to one Lavinia Vanderboren and her family.

Shadow Lodge

@bedu
Maybe he is distracted, and he can't concentrate that well, but Bedu don't seem to recall anything about the Vanderboren family. He is sure to have heard the name before though. Certainly a local family.
His trip at the docks is way more informative though.
He learns that the Vanderborens are indeed a noble family of Sasserine and news of Verik and Larissa's death in a fire from one month ago.
Garno is doing good. He is working a lot and fortunately, at the docks there is a lot of work for a strong half-orc such as him.
He is putting away some money to buy a ring. He had the chance to buy a ring at a pretty good price lately, but he rather decided to buy a ring in the market district. One he can tell wasn't attached to a corpse putrid finger just a few days before.
Aside from the Vanderboren fate and Garno's plans for a wedding ring you don't learn anything relevant.
Most people in Sasserine are preparing for the Locustfall festival that will be held later that month. Shadowshore is certainly not the most festive of districts, but if nothing else a lot of people are anticipating the festival.
The derelict and unfortunate for the leftover food that may come their way, the more shady ones for the huge crowd, and the chance to pickpocket some rich festive bumbling guy from the plantations outside Sasserine.

"Well she has my interest, I'm quite curious how she came to find me. Where is Festival Street and ..."

Tessa pulls the note back up and looks for the location again.

"Festival Street and Blue Skink Lane? I can't say I'm familiar with that location. Is that in the Noble district?"

After the halfling answers, Tessa thanks her and ensures she will be on time for dinner. After Kora departs, Tessa stuffs the note into her pocket and heads back into the Six Swords to see if she can dig up any information on this Lady Vande...

Tessa pulls the note back out of her pocket, unfolding it and reading the name again.

Lavinia Vanderboren. Right! Let's see if anyone has heard of this Vanderboren family, shall we?

Tessa returns to her carousing with the crowd, picking right back up where she left off. Someone thrusts another mug of ale into her hands and she begins to join in the drunken song that is currently being sung. When the song dies down she begins to make her way through the Swords looking for someone who knows something about the Vanderborings.

Tessa shakes her head and sits the mug of ale down on the bar.

Perhaps it may be best to wait on this ale until I can clear my head for a bit.

Tessa folds the letter and puts it away once more and begins to look for some of the more reliable contacts she's used before, repeating the name in her head so she doesn't screw it up.

Boren. Vanderboren.

Tessa wants to Gather Information, I assume you want to treat this like a Knowledge check?

Shadow Lodge

@Tessa
actually Gather information is now a Diplomacy check
without asking around is knowledge Local, but it appears you don't have much knowledge by yourself

Tessa manage to learn about the fire that killed the Vanderborens on their own new ship.
That the Vanderborens left two childern behind (Vanthus and Lavinia) and that they are indeed a noble family from the market district.

Hmm. Not Caydenites, then. I suppose it is just a coincidence that we've both suffered from suspicious fires recently. Gavin holds his bowl of turtle stew up to his face, sipping and licking the last tasty bits. "Excuse my manners, Ms. Whistlegap. It is a near crime to Cayden Cailean to leave a drop of anything so tasty behind! I'll bring better manners to Lady Vanderboren's for dinner tomorrow night, and I hope to see you there as well. No need to give me directions, by Cayden's will I will get there or I will not! Until we meet again, Ms. Whistlegap!"

Helping the elderly halfling off her stool, and secretly impressed with the woman's appetite, Gavin slides a gold piece onto the bar. "For you barkeep, to cover our meal and drinks - and your tip of course. May your days ahead be filled with merry times." Stepping out into the cool spring morning, Gavin bids the halfling adieu, and heads towards home for morning prayers, breathing into his cupped hand to warm his nose.

At home, Gavin participates in prayers with his father, and tells the elder d'Bourgemont of the invitation, noting the coincidence of each family suffering a fire. Then, after breakfast, Gavin makes his way to shop a bit, buying a growler of fine ale as a present to Lady Vanderboren, and a suitable outfit for himself.

Barring anything unusual, I'm ready to move on to the dinner. A gallon of ale is 2sp, but I'd like to buy a gallon of fine ale. how much will that cost? I'll update my character sheet to reflect breakfast, the fine ale, and a suitable outfit accordingly.

Shadow Lodge

I set up the scene for the dinner. Do not feel pressured into jumping ahead. By all means if you have actions you want to take before the dinner go ahead

Vanderboren's Mansion is located in the eastern section of the Merchant district; the seven foot high stone walls that surrounds the estate are impossible to miss, as is the towering, gothic, three-story house that dominates the grounds within. Leering Gargoyles and capering nynphs festoon the eaves of the manor's roof, and several trees give the manor grounds a nice buffer from the bustle of the city.
The front gates have been left open for you and the only thing barring your way is the heavy wooden doors of the manor itself, with a big metal door-knocker to announce the visitors.
As you enter the garden, you notice you are not alone, others are entering with you, some of them possibly holding a letter very similar to the one you received. Five in total.

Which of course is the rest of the party. I would like for all of you to give a description of your character. and feel free to interact with each other before you knock.

also...
@Gavin I'd say fine ale costs double, so 4sp. for outfit, unless you want to go with a particularly extravagant outfit I'd say it's free of charge, I assume they would be included in the cost of living rules.

Bedu eventually encounters a kindly old soldier who he tips 5 silvers whether or not the answers are that helpful.

"Oh, I am glad to hear that the Lady is back from the misfortune of her loss. Parents dying before their children is a terrible thing. Does she have many other family, living in the manor house?"

Bedu? Isn't it expected for parents to die before the children? Usually people say it's a terrible thing if the children die before the parents do.

As to Erick's description, please see the link under 'cavalier' on the heading of the post for a picture. Erick's currently only got one pistol however, rather than 2, and he hasn't picked up any stakes yet, but other than that, it's accurate.

Erick enters the garden, as directed, and looks around. He reaches to the brim of his hat and tugs the edge down while nodding his head toward any and all on first meeting. "Evenin'." He says. As he walks around, the heavy sword at his side jingles softly as the rings piercing it's blade vibrate from the footsteps.

But she's the only one living here. Well, her and her servants, and I also believe there is a group of adventurers she keeps around, doing stuff for her."

Gavin whistles as he enters the Vanderboren estate's grounds, impressed with the gothic architecture and lovely grounds. Noticing the heavily armed and armored man, (Erick) Gavin approaches and sticks out his hand, giving the the man his friendliest smile. This one looks ready to take on an army. Best to stay on his good side.

"Greetings, friend. I'm Gavin d'Bourgemont. Are you a retainer of Lady Vanderboren? This is a beautiful manor."

Gavin is dressed in a new pair of leather breaches, and a nice, if not flashy, comfortable shirt. He's also got on obviously new brown leather traveler's boots, without so much as a scuff on them. Otherwise, he carries nothing except a growler of ale, and a battered copper cup, tied to his belt.

Scarletrose, I'm figuring that most all of Gavin's possesions burned up in the fire, so he's going to buy a respectable traveller's outfit, maybe double the cost of a typical one, at 2gp?

Erick, that's a pretty impressive picture. Did you make it?

Erick looks over the man, then takes off a glove, sticking it in his holster strap. He takes the man's hand in a firm handshake. "Greetings, Erick Bonestihl. And no, at least not yet. I assume we were both gifted with letters. It appears Lady Vanderboren is looking to hire some new retainers. Hopefully it's not to provide security around here." More likely she wants someone to look into the ship exploding with her parents on board. She's got the money to make the local guard work on it with feverish desire. The fact she's hiring her own people means she doesn't trust the guard, which means politics. He looks around the grounds, and nods. Kutsya hadn't been inside a private house in the Merchant District since she was a girl. Her father had briefly been employed by a merchant captain who liked to throw lavish parties -- briefly, because he went bankrupt soon thereafter. Kutsya knew that she didn't own clothes appropriate to the occasion, but she wore the best that she had -- a clean tan tunic without patches, and dark brown trousers that hadn't yet faded. She also insisted that Kratzenklau soak thoroughly in fresh water before taking his usual perch on her upper back, sheltered beneath her thick braids.

When she arrives at the impressive estate, there are several humans there, waiting in the garden. She attempts a smile at them, but is so intimidated that it probably appears to be a grimace. Upon noticing one of the gentlemen's sword, there is a fleeting moment when she wishes she had brought her pick. But then she remembers that now she is never without weapons.

Kutsya is a female dwarf in her late fifties (human equivalent is early thirties). With her weathered face and hands and pure white hair she appears several decades older at first glance. She is obviously a laborer, and smells faintly of the sea. Her clothes were described above. Her hair is white and has been styled into eight braids that hang to her mid-back, though because they are folded under it is hard to say how long they actually are. She carries nothing but a faded coinpurse, though someone extremely observant may notice the golden king crab riding on her back, underneath her hair.

Gavin blanches when he sees the dwarven woman, as all the recent rumors in the Azure docksides has been of a white-haired dwarf involved at a massacre at the Drunken Dolphin, with tales of a body count that got larger every time Gavin heard the story. Lady Vanderboren is sure assembling a team of scary individuals... and me. What do I have to do with these two?

Standing behind and to the side of Erick as he approaches the dwarf, Gavin leans forward and extends his hand, trying to conceal the slight tremor in his hand and voice. "Uh, hello there, miss. Tessa nears the entrance and takes note of the impressive walls, manor and grounds of the estate.

Well it appears that the Vanderboren's are definitely on the well-to-do list here in the Merchant District!

As she walks the through the gates she takes note of a group of what looks like humans, halfing and is that a white haired dwarf?

So this is to be my competition, eh? That big jingly one with the blade sure will be interesting! Nothing like first impressions, eh?

The red head makes her entrances as she zig-zaggedly hops up the steps two at a time until she reaches the group. When she is a few feet away she hops her 150 pound body up onto the nearby bench so that she might give her slim and trim frame some additional height to be noticed. Standing a little over five and a half feet tall she makes sure to emphasize her "height" up on the bench. She spins around and flips her hat off into her left hand and nods her head down at the group. A large smile forces dimples in her cheeks as she looks out across the group.

Her skin is tanned and her blue eyes twinkle off the lighting in the courtyard. Her wavy red hair is just above the shoulders and is mostly tucked under a swashbuckler hat that has black lace and a red bow on the outer edge. She is wearing a bright red shirt and black pants that almost appear to be new as there is not a spot or speck of dust or dirt to be seen. Her rapier hangs at her right side as it finishes swaying from her spin she speaks up.

"Pardon me, I hope I've managed to make my entrance not too fashionably late! Tessa Steele, pleasure. And to whom do I have the honor of attending this fine dinner with may I ask?"

As the redhead finishes her dash up the stairs and does her little show on the bench, he grunts. "And now the entertainment has arrived." Just great, a callow boy with no spine, a dwarf who acts like she's literally a fish out of water, and now a dancer with delusions of nobility. "Can't really promise any pleasure, nor honor, but I'd be willing to wager on the fine dinner part. Erick Bonestihl." He tips his hat at the redhead, hiding a rolling of the eyes.

Yes, Erick's not that much older than Gavin, but given his life he's a lot older mentally. Add on to that his mentor called everyone who wasn't twice his age 'boy' and that's why Gavin's going to be boy for awhile. :)

Bedu hands over the letter at the door. He wears the white robes and cloak of the desert. A curved dagger at the rope belt. The rest of his equipment is in a large sack which Bedu will leave with the servant.

"Take this please and protect it please. I do not expect to need my weapons but it would be upsetting to find them tampered with. Aha, my father says to judge people well first. You look like a fine fellow so I shall behave with trust. Many thanks again." Bedu pats the man on the hip since he cannot quite reach much higher and lower could be insulting.

Then the halfling tightens his heavy paunch belt and follows the directions to dinner. He spends a while noticing any pictures and motifs on the walls, family and symbols, especially if anything strikes him as Cheliaxian.

Entering the room, Bedu finds the group already assembling and introducing themselves. As a halfling, easily missed, despite his bright clothes, Bedu walks slowly round the room again taking in the pictures and various other hangings. Then the sight of a decanter and "large" glass draws him to pour a drink.

Choosing a seat near the head of the table, Bedu begins to pile cushions on the chair. Three thin ones should make me about right for this gathering.

Then he smiles at the others, "It is my pleasure to meet you all. I look forward to spending time with such fine folks. But apologies, my tongue is blessed with too many words! I am Bedu, my friends call me "the barber", Bedu the barber. At your service."

Ha! I love it! Gavin's been to college, and studied fighting, but has only ever been in one, and the whole experience left him pretty bewildered, both in terms of the courage and the power he displayed. So yeah, he's got a bit of maturing to do in relation to Erick, and a bit of growing into himself as well.

Casting a sideways glance at Erick - this one sure takes himself seriously - Gavin steps forward for a proper introduction to the dwarf. "Yes, well, I apologize if I offended you, it's just, well, I've heard of you, you see, and I hear you are not one to be trifled with." And turning to Erick, "And obviously, you aren't either. To be honest, I'm actually pretty confused as to why I'm even here..."

When Tessa enters, Gavin lets out a relieved sigh and watches with great amusement as the woman tumbles and dances about. Excellent! There is one person here who knows how to enjoy herself, at least! Bemused but silent through Erick and Tessa's exchange, and thrilled when Tessa leans against him, Gavin whispers to the redhead. "Don't mind him, Ms. Steele. He seems like a decent enough sort, if a little gruff and serious. And if Lady Vanderboren has called us here to break some legs, I'm glad to have him around. Unless the legs that are to be broken are mine, I suppose."

When Bedu the Barber introduces himself, Gavin thinks, "Now I am even more confused. The large man is obviously a tough sort, and the redhead sure talks as if she can tumble, and I know about the dwarf, but this Bedu, he seems, like me, more of a lover of life than a lover of the fight. Perhaps we aren't here to break legs.

Approaching Bedu, Gavin extends his hand. "Well met, Bedu! I see you can find enjoyment in the good things in life! And I must tell you, I've been in need of a haircut..."

I'm going to retcon Bedu a little, you were supposed to be in the garden and no one has yet knocked on the door. but I would say that by now people have noticed your presence in the garden

"oh... you are arrived. Welcome, welcome. Please come inside. Miss Vanderboren will receive you shortly."
The old halfling leads you through a couple of corridors inside the mansion leading towards the dining room, when you encounter a group of four people walking the opposite way. They look like obvious adventurers.

@Bedu:
You recognize them as the Jade Ravens, the group of adventurers employed by Lavinia that you heard about

The man and appearent leader of the group seems to take a few moments to size you up, then announces without much enthusiasm "Hmm. You must be the help Lavinia's bringing in to do the chores. Best of luck to ya!"
The dwarf with the group seems completely uninterested in you and continues on his way without even looking your way while a jaunty half-elf dressed in leather armor and armed with half a dozen daggers of different shapes whisper something in the ear of the other companion, an attractive but haughty-looking woman with a tattoo of a crescent moon on one cheek. She seems to chuckle at whatever comment the elf made.

I'll give you the time to interact with them if you so desire, but they seems to be on their way. Whenever you proceed you will enter the dining room
