Welcome to our Play-by-Post (PbP) game! Go ahead and be sure to post both here in the Gameplay thread as well as the Discussion thread as your PC when you can. If you need help creating an alias I can better try to help on Wednesday at 8DCG.

I will be playing a male human ranger. (this is Harvey)

Great. Once you figure out his name, create an alias for him and post under that name for the game. You can create a new alias by going to "My Account" at the top of the page. Everyone should do the same.

I am Paul Freeman a freed gladiator seeking gold and to see the world. I lived most of my life as a serf under a noble house until I killed another servant of my house in a drunken duel. The duke of my house sentenced me to serve him as a gladiator until I died but the zhentarim helped arrange terms of my freedom. With their help I fought for and won my freedom, and as such I owe them much and stay a member of the faction. My alignment is lawful neutral and I worship tyr god of justice.

Hi. This is Jacob. Will play Tempest cleric.

This is Jim, and this is my toon, Fergus.

Hail, brethren ... and, uh ...

*looks pointedly at John's character* others.

Thou dost ...? Doth ...? Dost ...? Dost.

Thou dost standeth in the presence of Fergus McDammitson, of the line of Owensons and servant of Torm.

*raises his forearm and fist over his chest in some sort of official-looking gesture*

*turns to Paul* Hail, good sir. A pleasure to meet another man of faith, albeit a follower of ... Tar, was it? Tor? Ah, Tyr. Yes, justice and all that.

*reaches forward in an attempt to pat Paul on the back good-naturedly*

*loses his balance momentarily, windmills his arms, straightens*

... I meant to do that.

Hail neighbors, and well met. I am Varis Starflower, a wandering elf monk.

I am Haldor Daggson, son of Dag. Once, when I was going to get revenge on that fire cult with my father, I got captured by the air cult. They taught me about the power of lightning, and I realized that with the power of lightning at my side, we could avenge my father's village. So I escaped later from the cult, but not without learning about how the used the wind and lightning. My father knew a man named McDammit Owenson, and I found out his son, Fergus McDammitson, was adventuring. Then I followed Fergus around. I'm trying to do good, but if that fire cult comes, the people of my father's old home will be avenged.

So it looks like we have six PCs once Harvey creates his alias, am I correct? In any case, I'll at least do the introduction to the campaign and everyone can update and catch up as we go.

As many campaigns do, ours starts with our heroes(?) gathered in a tavern. This tavern, called the Antler and Thistle, is located in the town of Brindol, the largest town in the Elsir Vale. You and your companions are enjoying an evening meal with a handful of locals, who are scattered around the place. Three men play a card game at a table in one corner while other people drink and talk amongst themselves.

At this point, please check the Roll20 map and see if you can 1. See the map, 2. See the tokens and 3. Control your token. Sean and Pavel haven't joined Roll20 yet so I can't assign them tokens.

While we wait a bit for that you can take the time to introduce your PCs. I'm working on the assumption that everyone in the party knows each other and is in town for a purpose, probably you have just completed a job as guards for a caravan. Once everyone is up-to-date, I'll begin!

Male Human Variant Paladin [8] | H68 | AC20 | Init. +0 | Speed 30 | Svs: STR+5 DEX+0 CON+2 INT-1 WIS+3 CHA+6 | Perc+3 | Insight+3 | Inves.-1 | Hvy Armor Master (-3 dmg bld/prc/sls attacks) | Dueling | Oath of Vengeance | Aura of Protection (+3 all saves w/in 10 feet)

Roll20 worked fine for me. I can see the map and tokens, and can control my token.

*turns to Fizzlebomb* How beith the weather down there, my diminutive gnome companion? HA HA! But I kid! Explode me not like thou didst thy laboratory ... allegedly.

*to Varis* Why wearest thou a mask? Thou art masking thy features, quite literally, HA HA! Why, how dost thou drinkest thine ale whilst thy mouth be covered? Mayhaps thou needest my help finishing thy drink, because it seems the ale within my own mug hath evaporated!

BARKEEP! BRING ME MORE ALE! THE NON-EVAPORATING KIND THIS TIME!

Scales of War - Yawning Portal Human Master of Dungeons [77] HP 1000 | AC 55 | Initiative -1 | Saves: ST +8 DX +8 CN +8 IN +8 WS +8 CH +8 | Perception +50 | Insight +60 | Investigation +70

Also, you can place yourselves in a different position in the dining area of the tavern if you wish. I just put you at that one table for convenience. I think Valis has already chosen to move, you also have that option.

As we go along I'll try to explain the format of a PbP game goes. One example would be using bold for when your character speaks. Use normal font for describing actions.

Stop spillin' it all over the floor and you'll find it last longer! The barkeep then comes over, brings a fresh mug of his finest brew, and then retreats back behind the counter.

You'll notice for any out of character discussion I use this blue font. This is for stuff like what we're talking about now. Use italics if you want to show what you character is thinking.

The barkeep seems to watch you with a little more interest. That fella there might need to be cut off soon if he keeps actin' like that.

Just below the box where you post is a thing that says "How to format your text" and has a "Show" spoiler box. Hit that and you'll see how to do these fonts. You'll mainly need {b}, {ooc}, and of course {dice} the most. The {spoiler} one would be used if you want to hide text that you'd want only certain people to read. I'd use this for things only a certain PC would need, or if someone can make a type of knowledge check.

GM only, but you can look this time!:
But this time only! I'll typically use this to make hidden dice rolls if I need to.

Male Wood Elf Monk [7] HP 45 | AC 17 | Initiative +4 | Saves: ST +3 DX +7 CN +1 IN+0 WS+3 CR+0 | Perception +6 | Insight +3 | Investigation +0

Friend paladin, feel free to finish my drink if you are feeling that thirsty. I can always get another water.
As for my mask, I had made a vow to judge and be judged by actions and not appearances. I keep it on as a reminded of that... to me as well as to others.

Scales of War - Yawning Portal Human Master of Dungeons [77] HP 1000 | AC 55 | Initiative -1 | Saves: ST +8 DX +8 CN +8 IN +8 WS +8 CH +8 | Perception +50 | Insight +60 | Investigation +70

OK, lets try to start our first fight! In PbP its much quicker if I roll initiative for everyone at the start. I'll then set the scene and announce which PCs may act. Its more like a block initiative, I won't hold up the game waiting for the "first" guy to post. I'll go in order of proper init as I update the game but I'll "skip" a PC if he hasn't posted yet. You'll see how it works.

The gentle hubbub of an evening at the Antler and Thistle tavern is shattered by the crack of the front door flying open and crashing against the wall. Four armed goblins rush into the bar, swords outstretched to skewer two of the bar patrons to death! For Sinruth! For the Hand! they cry in Common as the innocent fall to the floor!

Paul, use the map on Roll20 to move your token and determine your movement, I've done it for now. Also, what is your movement speed? For simplicity, I'll aloow you to move over the table in order to reach the nearest goblin.

Valis moves quickly to the nearest goblin but swings wide, not wanting to injure a nearby patron!

After determining that this pack seems to have no leader, Paul quickly leaps over the table to engage the same goblin but also fails to connect!

Fizzlebomb's spell finishes off the wounded goblin!

Scimitar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 for Damage if hit: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

The second grunt hacks at Haldor and does the same!

Scimitar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 for Damage if hit: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

At that moment, two more goblins enter the room, attacking Sain and Haldor, respectively!

Scimitar vs Haldor: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 for Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Seemingly these goblins are not well trained as they all miss their marks!

Grunt 6 vs Haldor: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22 for Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Fergus avoids an attack but Haldor is struck in the thigh!

The hobgoblin wants to back away from his assaulter, more concerned with throwing alchemist fire at the rabble in the back of the room! However, he is grappled by Paul and attempts to break the grapple! Which I just realized I forgot how that worked. Opposed checks again? I'll retcon this later perhaps.

Strength: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13

More enemies arrive in the form of two more grunt goblins and another hobgoblin! The hobgoblin stops in the doorway and tosses another alchemist fire, this one aimed at the rabble in the back of the room! He misses the men and the table (as well as the goblins) however another fire has been started in the building. Meanwhile, the fire on the barkeep and his bar spreads! The other two goblins attack the party!

Grunt 7 vs Sain: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20 for Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Paul is the grunt to your left, You can start with #8 then.

Varis lands a fatal blow the goblin in the doorway! He then steps to the northwest and finishes off another! I'd figure you'd finish off the injured one first.

Fizzlebomb is up! Someone tell him!

The hobgoblin will not submit and answer your questions because he dies in Paul's arms! Awww, how cute. Nice crit, by the way!

The other hobgoblin's jaw drops in surprise as his friend falls! Enraged, he moves to retaliate against the party by attacking Paul, however his rage causes his swing to miss wildly!

Longsword: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 for Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 2d6 ⇒ (2) + 1 + (3, 4) = 10

The rabble in the back of the tavern continue to try and keep the goblins at bay but they fail to land a blow! The goblins don't seem to take their quarry seriously and fail to land a deadly strike themselves!

Fist: 1d20 ⇒ 3
Fist: 1d20 ⇒ 6
Goblin 1: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Goblin 2: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Goblin 5 vs Fergus: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19 for Scimitar: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

The solo goblin manages to land a blow on Fergus, however he seems no worse for wear! Meanwhile, the fire in the tavern continues to spread dangerously, engulfing the bar!

Actually, I take 3 less damage from bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage because of my Heavy Armor Master feat, so I take no damage.

HAH! Is that the best thou canst do, scoundrel? Here beist thy doom! ... or is that beith? Um... DIE!

I swing at the goblin (#5) who has so eluded me thus far.

Longsword Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

McDammit.

Somebody start putting out that fire!
