Map

Cole, apparently having answered his own question, pin cushions the Queen with arrows. Each one draws a high keening buzz that is answered by the swarms nearby until the last takes her beyond regeneration. The noise of the swarms echoes outside and through the cavern, reaching a bone jarring crescendo only to break off suddenly.

Their Queen is dead. With nothing to hold them here, they begin to slowly disperse.

Happy Birthday, Cole. The kill is yours!

We are out of Initiative, for now.

"Wow, Cole. I thought the Lady's sword was something special, but sometimes I think you are wielding Erastil's own bow!"

Here's to the birthday fun of shredding a big bad with a round of arrows - and to much more enjoyment for the rest of the day!

Beagan watches the swarm, ready to draw upon the blessings of the gods if needed again to blow them off. "Hopefully with their queen gone, maybe most will move along so the army can pass through the gorge. Still, we should keep an eye out for trouble."

Eli slowly returns to his senses. The light ringing in his ears can be heard once more, competing with the droning gibber of the vescavors abandoned by their matriarch.

He turns his eyes to the body, observing each arrow as it protrudes in ugly demolition of the insectoid demon. "My eyes have regained their focus, with a mind to drive them again. I'm only glad to witness this turn of events. Well shot, Cole. I'd say we should show your work off to the paladins in their ranks, but they'll have to settle for our words, and trust them."

Aasimarra approaches the body of the Queen and begins to hack through what he hopes is her neck. He hacks and hacks, not just for the exercise either...he wants to make sure this abomination is deader than Ely's lineage.

He walks closer, surveying the queen.
As he does, he hitches up his armor and belt.

"Indeed," *chop*
"That was nice," *chop*
"Shooting, Cole." *chop*
"Your shoots," *chop*
"On the queen were deadly accurate," *chop*
"Unlikely to miss," *chop*
"Repeated with skill and," *chop*

Aasimarra leans on his ranseur, panting. He stares at the queen's head for a few moments. He casts Detect Magic in case the queen or any of the surrounding lair has items of interest.

Freakin' show off. Just because it's your cake day.

Cole grins at the downing of the queen - and more so at the dimming of the droning. His usual dour demeanor quickly returns though as he looks to the south.

"Anyone know what that purple light is?"

He moves to the edge of the light and peers within, hoping to see something.

As Serra chops the Vescavor queen into bits (finding nothing but gore and resin and what may be eggs that she was in the process of birthing), the swarms continue to leave. Every once in awhile though, a lonely vescavor (not even a swarm) emerges through the south east corner's pulsing pale purple light, only to eventually fly off after the others.

Knowledge planes, 20+:
While you are uncertain what the light is, it is probably nothing good. you are too far away from its source to do a proper knowledge check.

Also, I will be moving everyone on the map. I placed that fight in the wrong spot.

As Cole moves closer, he can see further into the cavern to the south east.

what Cole, and anyone that moves with him sees:
A long, rippling crevice of nauseating violet energy splits the
southern wall of this otherwise empty cave, a tear in reality through
which roiling clouds of mist churn and twist. The edges of the rift
pulse and writhe, widen and contract, almost as if it were an organic
thing. The temperature is noticeably hotter here than elsewhere in
the caves, and the air carries on it the foul stench of burning flesh.

Knowledge Planes, plus seeing what Cole sees above:
it is an
Abyssal rift, a permanent gate-like portal that allows passage from the Abyss into the Material Plane. It was via this rift that the vescavor queen entered the world and as the group(?)stares, the edges begin to stretch and pulse as if something large were attempting to push through from beyond.

Eli marches up alongside Cole, expecting to see drones and workers still clattering uselessly as the colony implodes. He's not at all prepared for the sight that comes into focus as the group gathers in front of the violet crevice.

"A Rift... It's an Abyssal Rift... here... right here... rifts in the Wound, sure... but here..." Eli's mind begins to sift through every conversation he's ever had with Marcy, in an effort to pin exactly what could help here to close it, now, and forever.

"Oh lordy! We'll need Aron or Aya to see this!" Serra exclaims.

Does Serra have an inkling about what to do about it? Can we close it?

The rift itself is one-way, and could probably be sealed automatically with a dimensional anchor, dimensional lock, dispel chaos, or dispel evil spell cast upon the it. Casting a magic circle against evil or magic circle against chaos spell around the rift with the circle’s energies radiating inward probably wouldn’t close the rift, but it would likely prevent any other creatures from emerging. Other methods to close the rift, such as sealing it over with stone via wall of stone or stone shape could probably block the entrance, or possibly even simply collapsing the cavern. Whatever is done, though, should be done soon before something else makes use of it to enter this world. Even now, the edges of it stretch and pulse as if trying to birth some new abomination into this place.

Serra looks at the rift, his mind flashing back to days of yore.

Really? No...couldn't be.
But it *could* be. Check.
No...it is too random... or is it?

Serra begins to hurriedly sift through his haversack, looking for something. Eventually, he pulls out a scroll. He holds it gingerly before him, as if uncertain what he remembers is true.

Serra casts a quick spell to remember what he forgot. He remembers now. Cast Read Magic.

"Cole! COLE!!" Serra shouts concernedly to Cole. "Protect me! We'll have one chance to close this rift...I can't be interrupted! Do you understand!? DO YOU!?"

Cole sits on his thumbs:

Serra stares at Cole until he does something smarter than sitting on his thumbs, like protecting Serra during this very difficult and dangerous casting.

Cole snap to and orders others to protect Serra:

Serra gingerly unfolds the scroll and begins the intricate castings to unleash the power therein, focusing the energy on the rift.

Caster Level: 1d20 + 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (13) + (5) + 6 = 24 vs. DC 16 (+ Mythic Surge)

After the spell is cast, Serra stands back, waiting to see what happens.

Cole looks at his thumb a moment, and uses it to grasp his bow. He knocks an arrow and calls to the others, "Form around him, let's see what he can do, but avoid the light unless you have to."

He stands next to the purple light (but not in it) and watches the rift carefully.

Eli continues to stare into the Rift, his senses almost being leeched into it, and away from the others. He starts to speak out loud, and he listens to his voice echo Father Marcus's words... Eli, really, when would you ever need to know this stuff? It's purely academic for those of us who remain well distant from the Wound itself...

"We can close it through certain magics which would dimensionally lock or anchor it down, or dispel the chaos and/or evil that permeates the plane itself..." Eli's peripheral vision sees the pulsing at the edges, of the Rift itself and his vision.

"Those magics are largely beyond us... but perhaps we could set wards against them for a short while, and then wall it over..."

Eli brings forth magic which circles the rift, and commands its energies inward, against the outward pulsing. Inspired Spell- Cast Magic Circle Against Evil

He retreats, joining the others to wait for Serra to finish his uncertain work.

Male Gnome Fallen Paladin 7 / AC 22

When Serra approaches the fallen demon, Beagan relaxes a bit, feeling the worst of the most immediate danger has past. But with Serra's first blow to the decimated, riddled corpse, the image of the knight slicing into his fallen, unconscious halfling friend comes rushing through him, roiling nautiously in his now very queasy stomach.

As Serra's difficult beheading continues, the vision of how he ended Nurah turns into worse memories, the sound of each chop bringing forth a heinous aural nightmare surging through his rattled mind. Each strike shudders through the Gnome as he relives his worst experiences of evil slicing, smashing, sundering, and torturing helpless beings - dead or alive. The steady chop-chop-chop into a foe's form, interspersed with commentary, evokes a visceral memory of the thump-thump-thump of whips and barbs and iron against the little folk of the Tanglebriar.

Gratified to see the vermin queen's head removed, but sickened by the repetitious thudding of weapon on body, with each chop, Beagan's face grows paler, tauter, and fiercer. Serra's dedication to beheading a corpse - or finishing off a live foe - just evoke too many memories of the non-chalant way the cultist's treated the halflings and the fey.

Remembering what the Lady said, he calls upon Iomedae to show him true evil. (Detect Evil)

Assuming Serra does not detect as evil…

He blinks, stunned for a moment as the thump-thump-thump of memories wash through him, biting his lip as he gets his answers and wonders if he can trust the gods. Calistria would have fed me whatever best fit her plans, right? But Iomedae is not like that - I need to believe in her. She wasn't responsible for the crusaders who burned innocent witches, abandoned their children, or raped virgins, right?

Hoping he can trust Iomedae, he answers Cole's call to circle around Serra, but he also tries to keep one eye on the possibly overwrought knight, as he watches closely for danger - or any signs of treachery.

Beagan:
Though Serra does not detect as evil, there is evil nearby. First it is the remnants of the Vescavor, an evil so awful that even in bits and pieces, it still fouls the world around it. But to the south, the pale purple light shines nearly blindingly with the evil it conveys. Beagan's stomach roils as the world seems assaulted by the nauseatingly blinding violet light. For all of this, Serra does not detect as evil, but evil is coming, Evil is very near.

He focuses next on the Abyss's new feathered gift to them all.

Cole's shot flies as true as always, shocking the creature with his quick response. -29 out of the gate. *yikes*!

As Serra's spell goes off, the rift behind the creature slams shut, stranding it here. It throws back its head and his eyes roll as he looks from one to the other. Suddenly, he is caught by Eli's light, the power of the spell blasting through his defenses. -12 damage from searing light

This is a Vrock. Profane champions of the Abyss, vrocks embody all the rage, hatred, and violence of that despicable realm. As ravenous and grotesquely opportunistic as the scavengers they resemble, vrocks delight in bloodshed, relishing the sounds and sensations of ripping the still-pulsing entrails from a living husk.

A typical vrock stands 8 feet tall and weighs 400 pounds. Vrocks generally form from the evil souls of hateful and wrathful mortals, particularly those who were career criminals, mercenaries, or assassins.

Cole watches as the dirty bird charges him, Well this is what I’m here for.

He winces as the strike grazes him - the strength of his companions spells keeping the worst of the blow from landing.

He nods to the strategist and backs off slightly (5’ step), but remains in reach for his attacks (he can’t have combat reflexes - right?).

Seeing no one else in reach, Cole focuses his mythic power (swift) on his iterative attack. He is using his normal cold iron arrows.

Eli takes Beagan's gift of speed to locate his, no...Her Scale, and touch it to Cole's Bow, bringing the cold iron to thrum with its new alignment. Cast Align Weapon, Good, under Terendelev's strength(19 minutes)

Cole, hearing Eli's imploring, hesitates and delays until after Eli's initiative, then shoots, wondering what the good man has done to his bow.

He shoots uneasily...

If Cole is attacked, as an immediate action Beagan tries to catch the foe's attention instead. (DC 15 Will or Vrock is compelled to attack Beagan instead.)

Eli watches the vrock become many, and his frustration mounts in proportion to the number of images confronting them all. He tries in vain to dismiss the confusion. Inspired Spell- Cast Dispel Magic

Jurin steps up and swings at the creature. His blade comes close, taking out one of the dancing images surrounding the vrock.

Serra tries to take on the creature as well, swinging twice, taking out one of the images with his near miss.

Beagan summons a flight of eagles that each attack. Two more of the images go down in a feathery flurry.

Eli tries to dispel the remaining three images, but to no avail. The vrock is accostumed to magic and Eli's spell fizzles before the creature even truly feels it.

Finally, Cole steps up and sends off his barrage of arrows, all aligned with Eli's blessing from Terendelev.

The first pierces one of the images, leaving two from the spell and the real demon, but the next two find their way past the illusions, mortally wounding the creature. He falls to the ground, but Cole shoots one more time, dismissing yet another of his images. Jurin, spurred by Cole's Mythic leadership, ends his life before he can even twitch, and his last miserable mirage disappears in the process. As he wasn't summoned, but crossed into this plane via the rift, he does not disappear, but stays very real, very still, and very dead at their feet.

and we are out of initiative.

Eli tucks Her Scale back into his pouch. It touches his silver box lightly, and he is reminded of their importance to him now. He looks at the vrock, and pats his pouch for the gratitude of continued magical strengths.

"Well shot, Cole. Well shot."

The old man plucks several vrock feathers, and tucks them away into his backpack. "Marcy will never believe me otherwise." He speaks to no one in particular.

Serra:
While the scroll has closed the rift for now, it might be wise to also do something to the stone to make sure it stays that way.

With the Vrock dead and the swarms mostly dissipated a quiet falls over the cavern. The purple light no longer overwhelms the dim sunlight streaming in faintly through the cracks in the ceiling, leaving the area with an almost... cozy... feel.

"Yes and no," Serra says definitely. "It's closed for now, and maybe forever, but it would be good to seal it over with stone to ensure that it cannot be used again."

He looks over the area to make sure they're leaving nothing behind of value in the nest.

Satisfied he's found what can be found, "Let us return to the group. With luck the swarms have dissipated by now and we can move the column forward. I don't like it here."

Upon returning to the army, they find most of the swarms have cleared. Once the vescavor swarms are cleared, it’s only a few more hours of marching before the the ruins of Drezen appear in the distance. The riverbed rises at a noticeable slope for these last few miles, rising up out of the Ahari gorge, and a stink of smoke and grime can be detected on the wind—a telltale sign of a city fallen to filth and horror.

"Uhhh, perhaps we should send a few scouts before bringing the larger force into view, Sir? Get an idea of what we're facing?" Aron offers cautiously.

Cole nods absently, eager to be among the demons, slaughtering them for what they have done. He thinks about who they have who may be good at stealthy observation. He sighs and turns to the group.

We'll have to settle for observation and no stealth.

"OK, any volunteers?" he asks the group. "Or should we go as a group? We did pretty well against the queen and the demons in the chapel. Maybe we should all go - there are bound to be hostilities."

"I do not advise an assault today, so scouting would probably be best. A small group might do unless we wish to be seen. Or one or two of us might scout from above. It might be that we can arrange an unseen flier over the town to really inspect the defenses, Cole."

Serra strokes his beard as he thinks and checks to make sure Kastor is nearby. He young, brave squire needs to learn about war and warcraft, seiges and tactics and the best way to learn was to do. However, since Kastor is to young to do, the next best way is watch and learn.

He's a good lad, he is.

Cole thinks a moment, "So Jurin, you can fly - can you make yourself invisible too? Or is that someone else's ken?" he looks at Serra again.

"Tomorrow, early, Jurin, if you're willing, would you fly around, at some decent height, and see what can be seen? Then the rest of us will follow after your report if there seems a reasonable thing to examine from the ground before moving the troops up."

He strokes the stubble on his chin, now growing into more of a beard than simple stubble, "If someone has some sort of see invisibility they can bestow on me, I can perhaps watch him and aid from afar if he gets into trouble with aerial demons." he looks to the group for other ideas to protect Jurin in his endeavor.
