Mounts in Review:

OK,

So we have:

Donkor riding a massive muscled horse;
Karek riding a large and amorous camel;
Halstadt on Khamsin, the clever she-camel;
Hurgah who travels on his own power (he’d probably terrify a steed);
Breach on a stout female camel;
Thalia on the mighty Scimitar, Prince of the Emporium;
Jason on Beasix the camel;
Moonpate a camel that can hold him;
Gandel: a desert riding dog?

Breach Shattershield wrote:
"I am ever more looking forward to this venture.", he adds with satisfied grin parting his thick lips. Patting the cow on her neck one last time, he moves on to where his friends are now standing. "Ready?", he ask clapping one of his large mitts on Karek's shoulder.

And with Breach's rally the band leaves Sothis heading east, following Gandel's map tracing. . .

Into the Desert

Endless tracts of sand. Or so it would seem to the uninitiated.

Those who know better though, such as Thalia or Donkor, appreciate that as you make your way east across the expanse you gradually cross through different types of desert terrain. The sand granules change from the larger and more course to the tiny and more fine. The dunes shift from smaller rippling waves to towering hills and valleys.

Nor is the desert as empty as it first appears. Insect life in particular is abundant, and you occasionally see signs of even larger predators. Always though, there is the heat.

The further you make your way east, the more frequently you come across signs of an earlier civilization poking out from the desert shelf. You pass the towering tip of a massive red-granite obelisk jutting from the sand, it's cultural or historical function now lost to time. Later you pass a cliff wall carved with several animal headed-human figurines, each over ten feet in height. These ancient Osirions were definitely big on "big".

If there is a dig site to the east and it is as large in scope as advertised at the Kothi, you would expect a great deal of supplies to be coming from Sothis to support it. There should have been a trail to pick up by now. But thus far, you see no sign. The simple explanation is likely that the desert winds have erased those signs, a phenomenon that is far from uncommon in this part of the world. You can't help but reflect that mankind's works of today seem awfully transient when compared to the signs of those who once came long long before.

OOC:

OK! Let’s talk default plans for your travel?

How does the group move as a group? In a clump? In a line? With scouts? Anything I should know about such as spells or skill checks?

Is the emphasis on speed to get to the site? Or is the emphasis on caution?

How does the group rest? Encamp at night? In the day?

Apologies for my absence - work has been crazy-busy.

Oooh! Could I really get one of those? Otherwise, whatever you think would be appropriate for a halfling in the desert - I shall defer to your judgment!

To backtrack just a bit:

"Good day to you, Master Overlander! May the fate the Gray Lady foresees for you always be favorable!" Gandel greets the proprietor.

"It's a pleasure to be doing business with you again. Is my usual mount, Binky, available?" the halfling asks hopefully. Diplomacy check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26

Gandel will also get some of the cool sand goggles at the Kothi. Umm, what exactly do the sand goggles do?

Perhaps we should split up into smaller groups as we get closer so we do not draw too much attention to ourselves. It might benefit us if those already at the site do not know we are all allied. I have spells that will allow me to communicate from a distance to coordinate our efforts. For travel I propose we stay in a straight line so not one gets lost in case a sand storm does whip up. Many of you know the desert better than myself, is it better to travel the entire way by day or by night? We dwarves are fine with day or night travel".

As it starts to get hotter Hal will cast Endure Elements on himself, Breach and Karek.

"I would not be averse to splitting up the party and trying multiple approaches. I can use magic to see things within about 600 feet of my location, and can also pass some limited messages if need be. I intend to try and divine an optimal course from She Who Orders Our Lives tonight. Hopefully some guidance will be found there."

"As well as our infiltration plans, I might also suggest making use of this magic item that I possess. It is a decanter of endless water, and it does just what it sounds like. It can put forth a great deal of water...endlessly. If we can find a good place to secrete ourselves for a few hours or a day, we could potentially turn the dig site into a hopeless morass for a time, and truly delay the dig. I have some limited engineering skills, but I suspect I am hardly the most qualified to choose such a place. If anybody deems this a good second or third option, I would welcome the help and advice, as we get closer."

"Thank you for that, friend Breach. I can additionally cast some spells to hide on Stone, if we find some, and it's optimal, or summon a number of earth elementals which may help to create a hidden course for the water."

"I've also been thinking, as another alternative; I could use Pharasma's guidance to detect undead creatures up to 60' beneath the surface of the sand. If I were to detect such creatures while wandering disguised or invisible around the dig site, it might a) be a very strong positive suggestion that Khymrasa, and therefore we, are not just wasting our time. Additionally, were I to consecrate the ground in which I detected such creatures, it may anger them to send them forth and even further disrupt the dig, giving the soldiers there something to worry about other than us."

OOC: Does anybody know if there is a specific equipment entry for these sand goggles I keep hearing about that I should be reading? Or is this just a pair of ordinary goggles to better protect the eyes?

They are just ordinary goggles as far as I know, but this being Osirion, I would assume they would call them sand goggles or something of the like, I mentioned them as a roleplaying aspect.

Thalia finally seems at home, humming tunelessly as they start their trek across the desert, wearing nothing more than thin silk pants and a small pink silk vest, and of course her goggles safely in place on her brow, ready for any sandstorms.

The desert sun glares like the eye of some gargantuan beast, piercing even the toughest of men with it's heat, but Thalia seems happy, not sweating, no shortness of breath, even the sun seems to have no effect on her, which seems strange as she has not cast any spells nor quaffed any potions to stave off the effects of the desert sun.

Thalia wheels Scimitar around to face the party, deciding to take charge, the less dead they have, the better her chance of survival in the long run.

"Okay, some of you are from this land, others are not, there are a few rules to the desert that many of us have had to learn the hard way. one of them is conserve water, without water you are doomed to death here. Another is do not walk off on your own, more than sand lies in these deserts, and they will kill you if given the chance, also, the sands are a natural mirror, the sun's light will reflect off them and create shimmering patterns, known as mirages. Lastly, do not, and I repeat, do not assume anything here, the sands shift as much as the mighty seas, and they will not stay constant. Stick with me, and we will get there fine."

I think that scouting may not be a priority here, and I would want to approach cautiously, what does eveyone else think? I will try and lead the group, making survival rolls when needed, using the most of my class abilities.

It does and Morgrym does. In fact the heat is punishing before you even leave the streets of Sothis. Say, it looks like there’s a whole lot of enduring going on here.

Thalia – desert endurance
Donkor – endure elements and an impressive water supply
Hurgah – extreme endurance
Halstadt – endure elements
Karek – hot weather outfit over his full plate/ endure elements from Halstadt
Breach - endure elements from Halstadt

Anyone else I missed?

Hey guys, I have some bad news. I am going to be in Hawaii for an Army school for the next three weeks. I thought I would have Internet access during this time, but was just informd today I am not to take any laptops on this trip. I will not be back in Japan until the 24th, so itlooks like I am going to get reamed out of this adventure. Thanks for selecting me and have a great time.

Sorry for the slowness of my posts. I'm on call this week and it has been rather busy.

As they head out to the desert the heat from the sands rushes over Jason in waves. He speaks an incantation and casts Endure Elements on himself.

I know that isn't much. I need to read through some of the posts.

Nuts!

So do you want me to GM PC Breach for you until you return? I am content to do so. Or do I read correct that you're out? If so, be well man. We enjoyed having Breach!

Photos!

As we go along, I'll (hopefully) add more and more photos for the game by providing links to Picasa.

This link here should give you access to a couple basic maps to start us off. The maps look slightly better if you use "slide show" or full screen". The first two maps are just to help orient any Golarion newbs – they cover too huge an area to be particularly illuminating about your present journey. The third on the other hand, is an insanely accurate representation of Gandel's hand-drawn map which he copied back at the Kothi.

That reminds me, if Gandel is our party member who purports to actually has some indication as to where the party is headed, how about he gives us a Survival or Knowledge (geography) check - whichever is better. It might be cool if the PCs were trapped wandering the desert endlessly - but no pressure.

Also, if players have pictures of their PCs they would like me to add to the site, you can email those photos to me and I'll upload them so they can be shared with the group.

Mere minutes after setting out Moonpate is sweating profusely and he starts to suffer. Gandel is also in trouble. They will soon be exposed to heat stroke. The horse and dog are also at risk, but Thalia suspects they will likely survive to their destination.

OOC: With her Survival score, if Thalia dispenses advice to Moonpate and Gandel in regards to precautions they might take, they will each get +2 to their impending Fort saves against heat. They got a bunch coming up.

Tracks!

Thalia spies them first, but Gandel and Donkor quickly confirm.

A pack of four-legged, talon-toed creatures is moving through the region. Donkor, Gandel, Karek and Breach count seven, maybe eight sets of tracks, but Thalia counts at least eleven. She says some in the rear are tailing the leads, placing their feet inside the tracks of those that came before – a tactic which warns that the creatures are possessed of guile. The tracks run parallel to your own route as though anticipating your destination and loping ahead. After a few minutes, they suddenly veer off to the right.

Then it gets weird.

The number of tracks suddenly cut down to one. As though the others have all just disappeared, leaving a single creature.

OOC: The tracks suggest medium-sized magical beats. Possibly something vaguely lupine or maybe even feline. They don’t match known desert animals.

Not that it all matters,

But unless I learn otherwise, based on what I’ve pieced together from the above, I’ve got our stalwart band traveling during the day, camping at night, traveling cautiously (max speed 40 – Hurgah’s walk)

But I’ve currently got the party traveling like an efficient classic camel train, in single-file, in the following order:

Thalia (in the lead)

Karek
Breach
Halstadt

Donkor
Jason
Gandel

Moopate
Hurgah (in the rear)

Everyone’s got their Perception going like a radar, and those who have Survival are employing that skill when the opportunity presents itself. Currently the sand dunes vary between 2-10 feet, like unmoving waves, obscuring valley-like pockets between them. The huge sun blinds you when you look west in the two-o'clock position.

Male Dwarf Cleric 8

Perception 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24

Looking around to see if he can spot anything Hal calls to Thalia, "Do we move forward or track these beasties down? I am more for a confrontation then gettin ambushed but you are clearly the most experienced desert traveler among us so I defer to your judgment"

Halstadt Morgrym wrote:

Perception 1d20 +8

OOC: Dennis, no need to roll Perception checks, unless requested. I'm in the camp where you don't get to know if there really isn't anything there or if you just failed the check. Consider Perception checks to be made behind the GM screen, by me - I'm pretty good about keeping on top of them.

IC:

Hal doesn't see anything, though he remains on edge.

What he does see is dozens of low-lying ambush points between the dunes of sand. His sense is that if he got to higher ground, such as atop one of the larger dunes, he could reduce the number of potential spots from which a foe could be lurking, but that would make him more visible as well.

Female Half-Elf Rogue (spy) 2/Druid (desert) 5

Knowledge nature roll to determine what these creatures are first, maybe Thalia has encountered them before. 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27

I want to determine if Thalia knows what these creatures are before I come up with tactics on how to deal with/avoid them.

[EDIT]And to think I missed the GM by a mere 5 minutes...[/EDIT]

OOC: Knowledge checks are just fine Ekeebe. Thalia will know what she knows and doesn't know, if you get what I mean.

It's really just Perception and Sense Motive that I like to keep behind the screen. Stealth is another - you shouldn't know how exactly well hidden you are - but I'm not too religious about it.

IC:

The tracks do not match any animals or other desert creature with which she is familiar. Xian'an's got a bad feeling about this. . .

Female Half-Elf Rogue (spy) 2/Druid (desert) 5

Ugh, it seems I cast wall of text again...spontaneous casting and all, just seems to go off without warning, sorry. Anyways thanky as always GM ^_^

Thalia frowns as she looks at the tracks, noting the impressions, and the strange tactics used to hide the pack of creature's numbers.

"I'm afraid I'm at a loss here gentlemen, these creatures are unknown to me, and I have walked these deserts for many years. My advice is to keep going, but very cautiously, their original number points toward an ambush predator."

Just realised that I am the only female here...might be able to exploit that some more later on >:D

Thalia stops for a moment, clarity finally forming, and survival instincts kicking in.

"Oh dear Calistria, I think I know how they hunt..."

Thalia quickly looks in the opposite direction of the tracks and then toward the direction the track's direction of travel, looking for any large rock formations or larger than normal sand dunes.

"If I am correct, the creatures hunt in one of two ways. The first way is simple, they know where ambushes are set up by the other members of their pack, and if so, can lead trackers, or other smaller, weaker predators to their location by splitting one of their pack mates away from the majority. to lead them toward certain doom, like baiting a fishing hook if you will."

Thalia fixes her hair, and adjusts her goggles, almost ruining her explanation by seeming frivolous and self absorbed, despite the information being related to her companions.

"The second way is trickier, and far more dangerous to the pack if unsuccessful. It involves one creature continuing ahead of the others, while the rest of the pack double back behind their prey, following them, and tracking them, as the prey would be doing to the single creature. It seems that we aren't dealing with a simple minded creature here, this level of though and preparation is something akin to wolves, maybe even far more advanced."

Thalia pauses for a moment, to calm Scimitar, and softly pat his neck in assurance.

"My advice is simple, we follow, but you, the large scaly one there, be prepared for creatures in case they use the latter tactic to attack. Also, us up the front, be prepared to fight anything to the sides of the party. Just remember, we are trying to be careful, so eyes open. Let's continue."

Wow this is the first time I have had to lead a party...I fell so important...now to make you all my minions!!!!! *insert evil laughter* :P

Donkor stops and concentrates, attempting to use his Knowledge domain clairvoyance ability to set up a view site about 200 feet up and use it to look around. If there is nothing visible in the first spot he chooses, for 2 rounds, he will move the location over a couple hundred feet and try again.

Donkor’s invisible sensor materializes 200 feet straight up. Unfortunately, looking through the sensor, Donkor sees nothing but endless sand.

Donkor:

Spoiler:

Wait! Correction – Soroon sees a flash of movement far to the southeast. A single quadrapedal creature moving low to the ground is slinking away between the dunes, trying to keep out of sight. A moment later and it is gone.

Donkor then terminates his sensor and reinitiates it as close as he can to where he saw the creature. The sensor is created close to the upper limit of Soroon's range, far to the southeast. Once he does, the priest gets a better look at the creature.

The lone beast looks vaguely like a muscled wolf. It has three razored tusks jutting from its lower jaw, creating the image of a terrifying underbite. The creature appears to have been badly injured, its body is a veritable jigsaw of thick brown scars. It is hard though to be certain though if the wounds are actually fresh or old. As frightening as this creature is, Donkor shudders at the thought of the power behind the beast that must have laid a vicious beating on this one.

The good news is the creature is clearly trying to put some distance between itself and the camel train.

OOC: That was two rounds of Donkor’s clairvoyance ability for the day so far – more if continues to keep an eye one it. Spotting the creature involved a successful use of Perception against Stealth with a bonus for the bird’s eye view. Let me know if Donkor intends to continue to track the creature with his sensor on subsequent rounds or try something different.

After a few seconds of concentration, Donkor's face grows intent. His eyes still seem far away as he speaks, "Roughly 6oo or 700 feet to the southeast is a creature travelling away from us. It appears injured, but I cannot tell whether the wounds are fresh or old. It looks like a very strong wolf with three sharp tusks coming from it's lower jaw. It is moving stealthily, and I barely spotted it, even with Pharasma's aid. I will try to discern more."

Donkor will watch the beastie and it's area for one more round to see if anything else occurs, and if not, he will move the eye halfway between us and it's current location to try and see if anything is following it, or coming between it and us.

Additionally, I'll make a knowledge check to see if I can tell what it might be?

+1 for running Breach as GMPC until he can rejoin us!

If Gandel is our party member who purports to actually has some indication as to where the party is headed, how about he gives us a Survival or Knowledge (geography) check - whichever is better. It might be cool if the PCs were trapped wandering the desert endlessly - but no pressure.

Perched atop his sand-colored pharaoh hound Binky, Gandel listens to his companions' conversations as he periodically checks his map.

Knowledge (geography) check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13

Mere minutes after setting out Moonpate is sweating profusely and he starts to suffer. Gandel is also in trouble. They will soon be exposed to heat stroke.

Beginning to swelter under the harsh desert sun, the halfling bard retrieves a scroll from his pack and reads the magic words inscribed upon it.

Use Magic Device DC 20 to activate Scroll of Endure Elements: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

"This traveling through the heat of the day is pretty intense," Gandel voices to his companions. "Wouldn't it be better to travel in the night and rest during the day?"

Hearing Donkor describe the wounded beast, Jason immediately starts looking around. A wave of excitement runs though him as it always does when danger seems to be near.

"Just the one animal, Donkor? If they are fresh wounds, then I wonder where the one that did that is?", he says.

Jason speaks an incantation and a wave of shimmering blue light washes over him for a moment.

Cast Mage Armor

"A wolf with three sharp tusks, you say?" Gandel asks Donkor as the priest describes the creature. "I wonder what that could be?" the halfling bard muses as he searches his memory for any creatures described in that manner.

Knowledge check - either arcana, dungeoneering, nature, planes, or religion as all have a +11 bonus: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12

EDIT: Nope, never heard of it!

Karek utters a low curse. I dond like da sound of dad. Ye cand be doo careful. He stares at the ground, contemplating how he is going to get off this camel if there is any trouble.

Karek takes out his hammer with one hand, resting it on his shoulder. At the same time he tightens his grip on the reins of Aleson, his mount. Now dond you ged any 'deas.

Aleson bleats a few times in protest, but then relents, finally going still.

OOC: OK, I admit that wasn't very impressive for post 200.

"Baldo's Balls on Fire, its hot! A month indoors softened me too much."

Moonpate takes his ever present beer mug and turns it upside down over his head as if hoping ice water would flow like a river, muttering to himself and oblivious to how crazy he must look.

He will use his bonded item to cast Endure Elements.

OOC: Thank you to Moonpate and Gandel for making me toss my detailed post regarding heat stroke and cumulative Fortitude saves. Baldo's balls indeed!

A micro-second later Moonpate is enveloped in an invisible but tangible sphere composed of overlapping rotating bands of force.

OOC: 6 hours, 59 minutes and 9 rounds to go on the mage armor.

Re: Crossbow

Just to clarify, does that mean Moonpate is holding his mwk light crossbow? He's balancing it on his camel? Or he keeps it handy on his back? This is just for my personal edification - it's not a detail that will ever matter in any way.*

*except perhaps in a post to be named later

Max,

You flubbed that one just to make the GM smile, didn't you. We'll come back to that one later.

IC:

Gandel is confident that the camel train is making measurable progress as it moves east, as it should be, but he's a bit fuzzy as to whether you have gone far enough north or not. The halfling knows the dig site should be south of the Heavenscape of Tumen, but how far south. . . ? Krenshar's map could have been better. They don't settle for this kind of imprecision in their maps in Absalom.

In the meantime, Blinky sniffs at the taloned tracks Thalia discovered. Then he folds back his ears and makes a low growl. Yeah, the map can wait.
