We'll need a granary and/or other storage for the food for winter as well.
DM Nerk |
I don't think the rules for manufacturing are meant to be as granular as we're discussing, and I freely admit my ignorance in regards to mineral deposits and smelting, etc. I think that the answer to the smelting question is in the Workstation room, which includes Masterwork artisan's tools for the appropriate craft or profession, which I would say for a smelting operation would be mining. Again, upon the discovery of suitable ore, the workstation could generate gp in the form of materials for smithing.
The Kingdom building section of UC has rules for building a full-on mine. I think until then you're going to have to work with simple checks to produce material relatively slowly. It seems reasonable that with 120ish adults, you will have a hard time getting a serious mining operation going while still feeding everyone.
Vallen Silverclasp |
Sounds good to me! Thanks for putting up with my nauseating amount of questions, Nerk.
I agree with using the extra goods we'll be picking up to make: one more farm, food storage, assist Sandra with the bunkhouse/add on another bunkhouse to it.
Gair Hearthseeker |
Back, post incoming.
Setting up the forge sounds good to me. It seems that we will have 2 extra goods left over. Since the forge is somewhat our thing, maybe throw those at the new palisade? With the shark-teeth I imagine people will be very keen on that?
Or we could put it towards a garden if someone/their NPC wants to take that on? Hard to overvalue having our own food supply.
Istiel |
Light backstory up for Istiel. I should have asked this before writing it, but when Manari referred to Istiel as sister, she was speaking of a close bond and not her literal sister? I can change the backstory if they are in fact siblings.
Vallen Silverclasp |
I'm pulling the trigger on the forge. We will have 1 influence and 1 goods leftover. There was discussion on donating this to Edmund's walls or Sandra's houses. Thoughts?
Nerk, are we still able to trade capital at its cost for other capital? I noticed that was deleted from the spreadsheet. If not, we're lacking 2 labor for a forge.
Gair Hearthseeker |
We were only able to do that for the initial capital we brought with us as I understand it Vallen.
The forge is good. Donating to the walls is a good plan at the moment.
So Nerk, how exactly are these walls set up? In the rules they are stated as surrounding a building. Are they then being built around the longhouse site?
Or is it one large area? It sounds like both sections currently in progress are connected. If so, how large an area have Edmund and his people staked out? How many sections will be needed before it's an enclosed space?
Vallen Silverclasp |
Oh you're right Gair! Well at least one of those goods was probably from our initial stock? In any case, no more 1:1 capital conversions then.
DM Nerk |
Vallen - Gair answered correctly.
Gair - the defensive wall Size is 20-40 squares. I'm assuming that 40 will be preferable, and that for walls only, each square is linear rather than area (40 5' lengths of wall, rather than 40 5x5 areas enclosed by a wall). Thus, each section can contain a 50'x50' area, or if they're together, a 100'x100' area. Big enough to contain a number of other buildings.
I don't see any rules about stacking rooms (multiple stories) but they may be there. If anyone knows where they are, feel free to point them out. Otherwise I'll houserule some kind of architecture/engineering check to see how many stories high you can build.
Gair Hearthseeker |
Sounds great Nerk. Those initial two sections can enclose our first few building and then we can expand with more walls later. Sounds Great!
If we're building stone walls now we should definitely include a guard post as our next purchase in order to make the walls walkable.
Vallen Silverclasp |
I did not, I was still working under the 1:1 conversion for starting capital. 1 goods was traded for one capital. Reversing that, we have 2 goods and 1 influence left. In that case, we trade the 2 goods and 1 influence for labor, and have exactly enough to begin construction of the forge.
We have 0 capital now, nothing to donate.
Gair Hearthseeker |
Personally I'd rather wait a day or so to start the forge and just earn the 1 labor? Seems like a waste otherwise. I'm sure Gaross or Horn'Tos is more than capable of getting it started?
DM Nerk |
Yes, earning the capital will be easy (a matter of a roll or two) but you'll still have to pay the earned cost for that capital, which will require a few more rolls.
Meanwhile, with all of you sailing away, the temptation for Sandra and Jarla to stage a coup is high...
...but no matter how I twist it, it doesn't seem like what either of them would do.
Vallen Silverclasp |
If someone buys a point of labor for 10gp (under our current 1/2 rule), we can use that instead and it will save us 2 goods and 1 influence. Ben has 38gp, I don't know how much money Cueta and Kal'tos have. Gair and Vallen don't have enough money. Volunteers to spend 10gp on labor?
Note that if we are gone for more than a week, Capital Attrition sets in and we all lose 1 of each Capital category. I don't think we'll be gone for a whole seven days, though.
I'm not worried about the Thayers. Now Zik.... we have to watch that gnome. He's a changed man.
Gair Hearthseeker |
Pfff, Hassan is the one with the soldiers. He's planning a military coup as we speak :P
I think the 1/2 rule only applies to earned capital but I could be mistaken?
With a decent roll, Hassan should have enough gp to earn the 1 labor tomorrow as an alternative?
Oh, and since we're basically sharing our capital I doubt we have to worry about attrition. Though Nerk could correct me on that.
DM Nerk |
Yes, the half price thing only counts for earned labor. So 20gp today, or 5gp tomorrow if Istiel (or one of your other NPCs) can earn a point of labor with a check of some sort. They suggest that Climb checks can be used to earn labor, which I don't quite get, but....
It's 3 days there and 3 days back. It'll take a day to hump everything from the cave to the beach. That's a week there, and nobody's looked for the Sharks.
For the moment, though, I'm going to say that Gaross, Sorala, Hassan, Septimus and Istiel (I didn't even have to look them up, though it took me a minute to remember them all and arrange them alphabetically) serve as unpaid managers, delaying capital attrition to 14 days rather than 7.
Vallen Silverclasp |
Ah so it will take us a week. Excellent, we won't have to worry about capital attrition then.
None of our auxiliary characters have the "cash" to earn capital, and would have to earn at least 5gp to make a check to earn a point of labor.
Edit: Pulling back the capital spent on the forge. It will have to wait until we have 1 more point of labor, possibly on Day 10.
Vallen Silverclasp |
Thank you for being flexible! Gaross (Ben's npc) can easily get the last bit of labor tomorrow. That even makes sense, seeing how he was going to help with the forge in exchange for Vallen's advice on the wall anyway.
Vallen Silverclasp |
Are you using the craft: stone masonry check to earn labor? If so, you can earn 2 labor by spending 10gp with that roll. (Nice!)
Vallen Silverclasp |
Excellent. That gives us enough to begin building a forge tomorrow. You've made all the dwarf's dreams come true!
Edit: By the way, feel free to use the Masonry team for an extra +4 on checks to generate gp or capital. Gaross is kind of the manager of it, anyway.

Cueta has 1 gp at the moment, but she's happy to kick it in towards whatever, whenever.

I like this idea.
DM Nerk |
It's the natural ecology of an RPG for the players to say "Can I...?" and the GM to say "Aye" or "Nay." Since a lot of this game is houseruled, these questions come up a fair lot, and I try to balance fun with a hard sort of realism. When you ask for things, my first impulse is to say yes, and my second is to try to think how the world works and what would be accurate. Materials of any kind and food are big concerns now, and the reality I'm shooting at is one where starvation is a danger and material is something that has to be struggled for. So there's that, but on the other side, there's fun. So I'm checking in here to make sure everyone's having fun and that nobody's feeling unfairly treated by the rules of the world that I'm mostly pulling out of my ... hat. Feel free to respond or not, or PM me, or ... you know ... whatever.
Vallen Silverclasp |
I'm definitely having fun! Keep up the good work, Nerk. Your GMing style is excellent and well suited for this environment. I'll refer to this post when I'm cursing your name as we watch everyone starve to death in a month.

Oh, yeah - this is a blast! No worries from me. Thanks for your time - I imagine it is not insignificant!

In a month! I think that starts next week :)
Gair Hearthseeker |
Nerk, before this campaign got underway we'd talked about being able to craft at half speed while adventuring. Am I still able to do this? In between morning, evenings and what work I am able to do despite the rocking of the boat I should be able to make half progress on my bow, yes?
Gair Hearthseeker |
On the other topic, I'm having a blast in this campaign. I think the rules we have set up are working rather well. You have my thanks for putting so much effort into this campaign. I just hope you aren't getting sick of the constant questions? :P
And our supplies might be gone in a week Ceuta but the current foragers should be able to drag it out to a month at least like Vallen says...then we starve:P
DM Nerk |
And I'll probably assume that nameless NPCs are dying off from starvation before PCs. Depending how things are rationed, etc. 'Course, there may be uprisings before then.
@ Gair: half speed while adventuring, yes, though I would say you can get a full day in since you're not actually involved in sailing.
DM Nerk |
I believe it was started on Day 4? Since the first meeting was delayed by the thunderstorm on Day 3, so the first farm will hit its stride Day 32. Which makes some sense, if you planted on day 4, that it would take at least 4 weeks for anything to be ready to harvest.
Cue horticultural debate.
Gair Hearthseeker |
The bears should be a big help no question!
If I remember correctly, the farm should feed roughly 4-5 people indefinitely? This certainly adds up but we'll need several before it really pays off.
Vallen Silverclasp |
I hope it feeds more than 4-5 people indefinitely. Or we're going to need a whoole lot of farms.
Also, bears are nature's tanks. If it's a grizzly bear, we should leave it alone. If it's a black bear or smaller bear, we could have a shot, but we will need to be cautious.
