I'm not sure I've got things straight. I believe:
Alviss attacked WR2
WR2 fell down and WR3 helped take Alviss' short sword.
WR3 now has the sword.
The last line is the important thing to figure out.
I'm going to have Alviss draw his axe and 5' step into E3 (combines as a regular move), Smite Evil (Swift Action) and attack the rat with the sword. Looking at the various parts of the PRD, that seems correct.
Does that sequence work? And who's got the sword, please?
Thanks!
HolmesandWatson |
Looking at the map, I'm open to suggestions. Being a paladin, Alviss is inclined to rush into the breach.
Also, he's not wounded, like Eles.
Since he lost the sword, he's going to go with Smite Evil to try and quickly take down the rat with his silvered sword. Which he'll then reclaim and use, since the ax isn't worth much without Smite (which he'll be out of).

With Lummel's reach, can he try to trip WR2 (or whichever is to the left of the square Alviss is moving into)? Without impaling Alviss en route?
Too bad there's no 'aid another' rule where one character can say they're going to pick up another's weapon if they get disarmed...
I'll post the action I proposed in about an hour, pending further dicussion.

The 'readied action' mechanic covers that situation.
Lummel could try to make the trip attack, but the wererat would have 3/4 cover (+7AC) from the combination of fighting through a 3' doorway and having to avoid Alviss.
I hadn't realized how much work Paizo had put into revising the cover system compared to 3.5. After this fight I will switch to using the rules in the PRD for partial/standard/improved cover instead of the 3.0 houserules, if there are no objections.

damn it! scent! i feel like i should play honestly though and avoid metagaming...would ziz know they could find him by scent? i doubt it. i'm willing to take the risk with an AC of 24 and 50% miss in order to be of some use. i am open to suggestions for a change of target or spell though...what is the parties highest priority? the silver sword? i could grease it to try and make him drop it, or go all out and hit him with laughter. how much trouble is the party in, do you think?
this tiny (and tall) space really is crazy. i cant say i've ever had a combat quite like it and im finding it quite challenging to wrap my head around it. the tactical difficulties it presents are refreshing - cool encounter.

I rolled knowledge checks for everyone earlier, Elesandira made a high enough knowledge (nature) that she'd know about scent, and Bricker made a high enough knowledge (local) that he'd be aware of it too.
Grease might be best used to disarm the wererats. If you decide that you want to use it on an area, I'd let you cast it so that it coats the walls and floor of D4/E4 to leave E3 open for Alviss. Keep in mind that the rat has been trying to grapple you for the past two rounds, so its attacks would likely go against your CMD rather than your AC. Grease on yourself could be handy to avoid the grapple ;)
Spider climb and climb speeds definitely make for an interesting encounter in this situation. I was hoping the close quarters would exclude people and make it boring for some players... so far things seem to be going fairly well.

FYI, I'm scheduled for a PRK surgery tomorrow and the recovery instructions say to 'avoid visually intensive activities' such as computer use. Depending on how my recovery goes I might be away from the forums for a few days or I might not miss a beat.
I'm not sure when I'll be able to make the next update, but if we don't hear from Ziz before then I'll NPC him until he returns.

I went from 20/400 to a blurry 20/30 that should get better over the next month. The first few days weren't much fun, but things are OK now. I took a week off of work for the recovery and I've had quite a bit to catch up with... I'll try to have a new map up tonight so we can (finally) finish off this battle.

The old GM's dilemma... introducing new characters.
I'm torn as to whether to have the party finish their exploration of the bell tower and then have a nebulous 'something' happen to Ziz and Bricker around the time I introduce the new guys, or to introduce the new character immediately and kill off Ziz and Bricker because of the balance issues we'd run into with two PC-level NPCs hanging around in the party.
...or I could fudge it and say that now that the spotlight's off of them they lose their aura of PC awesomeness and fade into the background, relaying messages and standing guard and the like.
Thoughts?
Black Thom |
Umm, sorry... first time on Paizo PbP... what do I do?! LOL.
I have a friend you might enjoy having aboard if you need another. Active, creative, team player.

The first step is to post the "crunch" part of your character's info in your profile. When you click on your avatar you should be brought to the profile page, where you can click 'Edit My Profile" and type in your stats. There are programs like Heroforge that can do the heavy lifting for you and export as text, or you can type everything in manually if you prefer.
After that I'll need you to come up with a bit about your relationships with the rest of the party members. Read through their character backgrounds and catch up with the game's background to get a good idea of how Thom feels about each of them- you've almost certainly heard of them, at least. You can see an example of how Ziz wrote his relationship background here, in the spoiler at the bottom of the post.
I'm going to stick with five players for now, but you can certainly keep your friend in mind if/when I open recruiting again.
Jon Silver |
It might take me a day to get the character relationships to the rest of the party, maybe Jon will know 'Foot Down' Lummel from the event of alerting the guards to the raiders, but I'd like to find some connection for the half-elf Elesandira and the dwarf Alviss as well.
Jon Silver |
Character Relationships:
Lummel "foot down" Karson
True to his own words, Lummel was diligently standing on watch that early morning when Jon alerted the guards to the approaching raiders. Since that day a respect has remained between the two, an understanding that though their paths in life may be drastically different, they both would sacrifice to protect the good people of Brindin's Ford
Alviss
After Jon's elevation to 'hero' for the event of the repelled raid, he found himself the recipient of drinks and congratulation in taverns about town. While enjoying a free mug of ale and telling the story of his journey to Brindin's Ford, Jon caught the attention of Alviss. The dwarf questioned Jon about his travels, in particular for information about a lost group of pathfinders and a lost dwarven crafthall in the region of the Aspodells. Though Jon hadn't come across either, the two have remained friendly and Jon could see a day when he might accompany the dwarf on his search into the mountain region.
Elesandira
Jon has seen the half-elf ranger several times during her excursions into the areas outside of Brindin's Ford. Her elven heritage reminds Jon of home and although he did leave a misfit, the young elf still misses elven society and is always glad to see Elesandira. Though they have never had a formal conversation, Jon has called out greetings and waved at her from the tree tops, a beaming smile on his jovial face.
Raspin |
Most of you have at least heard of Raspin due to his "bad luck". Other have heard of his attempt to help the city library come up with a cataloging system that "actually makes sense, and does not require divine assistance from Nethys".
Alviss-Raspin has always seemed to like you, even though he does not know you well. Your penchance for being orderly, and standing up for good has gotten you in his good praises. He has yet to stand by your side in battle, but you are among the first he would choose if he had to pick an ally.
Elesandira-Her deeds are well known. He wishes she were more orderly, but being a good person is more important. He does wonder how much of an influence her ancestry is on her morals.
Lummel-He knows Lummel is a family man, and that he has the town's best interest at heart. While Raspin was not around for the raid himself, he did hear of Lummel's exploits, and between him and Alviss he would have a hard time choosing. Most likely he would never have to choose, and they would both be ready to stand beside him if another raid were to take place.
Jon Silver-Jon has never been met, but he was instrumental in the raid. Rumor has it that Jon is quiet intelligent. Raspin hopes his previous act of courage was not a one time thing, and that his character matches the ability Jon is said to have. With the way things are now heroes are needed here more than ever.

Great, looks like we're ready to write you into the story. I'm going to start things off with a bang for you guys- a combat encounter and subsequent investigation (if you choose to investigate) in the bad part of town, Southspur. You can give me a reason that your characters would be in Southspur during the festival (or I can make one up for you, whichever you prefer) and we'll get things moving!
Jon Silver |
Jon Silver eagerly seeks out Foora, interested to see if she has any festival specials on potions for sale. The cheery (yet still naive) Jon is aware of the threat presented by the Southspur neighborhood, but doesn't properly respect it (yet!)
loimprevisto |
Raspin has overheard a rumor about some sort of 'hidden library' found in Southspur. The details are vague, but most tellings agree that someone uncovered a room during renovations that had been bricked over a long time ago. There have been quite a few different versions of this rumor, and it's been very frustrating to track down exactly who found this room or what was in it. According to the ale room tales, the room contained anything from a scholar's small home shrine with a shelf full of religious texts (including old Arodenian texts and pre-Thrune Asmodean scripture) to a terrifying library full of crumbling tomes bound in unwholesome leathers and sanity threatening runes... he's decided to chase down the rumor himself since its festival time and he can more easily blend into the crowds without calling attention to how out of place he is in the neighborhood.
@Jon: That sounds fine. Foora isn't exactly well known- there are more rumors about her than facts. Still, those that have a need of her services can usually find their way to her. She tends to trade more in favors than in gold but if you offer her the right price I'm sure a deal can be arranged...
@All: RL has gotten a bit busy, but I should be able to put up an IC post tonight.
Zizzafalithax |
hi all, im around again. i apologize for my sudden absence but i have had a series of very serious family medical and financial issues. i would have preferred to give you advanced warning about my unavailability, but to be frank, playing games was the furthest thing from my mind at the time. at this point we're getting on with life, and id like to return to some semblance of a normal routine.
there have been 34 posts since i last checked, so it shouldn't be too hard for me to catch up, if you'll have me (though i disappointed that my companion seems to have vanished as well). its no problem if you dont feel comfortable with that though....
anyhow, i hope i didnt cause too many problems.

@Ziz: I know how that goes, glad to have you back! I was just about to write a post for Elesandira and I was going to have NPC Ziz skitter out the window after her to back her up. Let me know how you want to play it...
@Raspin: We can play it out when the action slows down and you take some time to investigate. I'm going to start off your time in Southspur with an encounter, I just wanted to work out a plausible reason that you'd be there.
@All: I meant to have a post up on Friday but work got busy and I needed some time to catch up on personal/family time. I have a fairly busy day lined up today, but I should be able to get an update posted.
loimprevisto |
Sorry everyone, that delay stretched much longer than I thought it would. I'm mostly finished adjusting to a change from night shift to day shift and with any luck there won't be any more long delays on my part.
@Jon & Raspin: I know that sometimes when I start a new game I have issues with getting in-character and finding the right voice for my IC writing. If you'd like to do some non-combat background RP in the gameplay thread you're more than welcome to. To play out either the meeting with Foora or the library scene just spoiler it as "Prologue" and we can do it concurrently with the combat.

@Raspin: Communication can be an issue in PbPs, and I can adjust my writing to fit your preferences if you'd like me to provide a summary in game terms as well as an IC description.
Stories say that although they lack eyes they possess some sort of organ that allows them to 'see' their immediate surroundings in great detail and that their sense of smell is amazingly acute.Your knowledge skills are high enough that you'd have a good chance of knowing about the exact interaction between blindsight and figment spells, so it is a bit disappointing that your first action turned out how it did. Would it be helpful if I added something like:
Grimlocks have scent and blindsight (40')
to the end of knowledge check summaries?

Yeah. It is always better to give mechanics such as blindsight, DR X lawful, immunity to cold, etc. That is now I do it as a GM. It makes the knowledge skills more useful.
