Thanks. I kept having 'spoiler' show up. I get it now.

Alviss' profile is loaded except for Gear. And I'll go with the apaloosan pony (or whatever it was called). three more and a cart and I can form my own clydesdales' like beer delivery service...

Everything looks good so far, Alviss. I may have some feedback for your gear, keep in mind special materials like mithral or darkwood can eliminate the armor check penalty for your shield. Read up on bucklers/light shields/heavy shields... heavy shield would probably be the best choice for you, but anything could work well.

Most gear is posted. Still need to spend a little more money. Will look at alternatives for armor check. Suggestions welcome.

I switched from heavy to light shield to drop one from amor check penalty. Also passed on your agile armor comment because it didn't compare well to full plate in weight and armor check. Thanks.

On Golarion, Common is actually Taldane: this is also the language of Cheliax (which used to be part of the Empire of Taldor).

animal companion stuff:
Please double-check your choices against the animal companion rules. From what I can tell, your companion should be eligible to learn 7 tricks (6 for INT 2, +1 bonus for animal companion). I noticed that you put a rank in Fly for the leopard... how did this come about? Do you have some method of regularly bestowing flight on him (her?) If not, you might want to put that rank into intimidate or something instead. By the book, Fey Heritage isn't allowed as an animal companion feat but it seems harmless enough and quite flavorful- I'll allow it. Be sure to note all of the bonuses on the character sheet so I don't have to rely on memory (bonus vs death effects, bonus for healing, vulnerability to cold iron). Also, have you considered agile maneuvers or weapon finesse instead of iron will? +4 to hit could make a big difference in combat...
The fly thing is a mistake. I'll sort that.
I thought the fey thing would suit my character, and thus her companion.
I'll have a fiddle with the sheet, thanks for the detailed attention, really helpful.
The beast has an awful will save, for someone who will mostly just take messages and give flanking occasionally I prefer iron will - I don't intend to use her in combat until we hit a higher level and I can throw boon companion on her.

Armour:
Chain shirt is a good choice for armor. I'm not sure if you noticed, but it doesn't let you use your full dex bonus to AC (only +4). You could improve this by paying 1000gp for a mithral chain shirt, or save a small amount of gold by downgrading to studded leather. That would give you the same overall AC but save a bit of weight and gold.
I couldn't afford mithral with the weapons I wanted. I didn't realise about studded leather.

house:
For the house, how about a room in the nothern outskirts of Silver Hill, toward Ford North?
I like that, always ready to reach for the skies.

Thanks, so I guess I have to ask to the GM which language is more likely Lummel could have learned around Brindin

Taldane = common, they are not separate languages.

Halfling and infernal would both make sense, sylvan to a lesser extent if he goes on frequent patrols.

Ok, all set! Final version of ziz is done. It was painful (he now wears a burlap sack) but I fit in managed all 3 pearls. As part of the revision I changed ot the create pit spell for hideous laughter. Not as good, IMHO, but hideous laughter is associated with copper dragons and fits his jokester attitude.
Ready to play!

@Alviss: Looks good so far. Keep in mind that a darkwood shield would eliminate the armor check penalty form a heavy shield. Also, you might want to spend some money on barding if you plan on using the horse in combat. This is mostly an urban game, so it might not come up... just something to think about.

@Ziz: Only 2 pearls listed on the character sheet, but it looks like you've accounted for the money for all 3.

Looks like we'll be starting tomorrow!

then ONWARD!

Thanks for the darkwood idea: that worked out better than masterwork shield.

Updated character sheet. I have about 2,200 gold left. Might add an item or two before you make first gameplay post (if work is quiet this morning), but nothing major. Regardless, Alviss is ready to start, so fire it up!

Woops. Posted this in the wrong tab.

Passed on barding since this is likely to be a one-off adventure in town. And I think it makes the apaloosa chafe..

My Core Rulebook pdf is on the fritz. Is the language bonus the same as intelligence bonus? If so, Alviss will add Goblin.

Only thing I would add to Alviss' sheet is the KEEN ability to my Battle Axe (1,000 gold). If that's okay, I'll update sheet. If not, it's done.

Not to be a pain, but the +1 for keen on a weapon can be applied only to weapons that are already magical so it counts as a +2, so the cost would be 6000 -> 8000 for the +2 weapon - the 2000 you paid for the weapon already

Simon Hayes wrote:

Oh. I didn't see that in the PRD:

Keen: This ability doubles the threat range of a weapon. Only piercing or slashing melee weapons can be keen. If you roll this property randomly for an inappropriate weapon, reroll. This benefit doesn't stack with any other effect that expands the threat range of a weapon (such as the keen edge spell or the Improved Critical feat).

And looking at the Table Melee Weapon Special Abilities, I read that as it's the +1 bonus base price (1,000).

I didn't think Keen added the +1. I thought it just doubled the critical threat.

Having said that, I mixed the price up with +1 armor (1000), so Alviss will just stick with his non-keen, nicked up +1 battle axe...

Thanks.

first the base price should be 2000. 1K is for a +1 bonus to armor.

Then Keen doesn't give a +1 bonus, it counts as a +1 bonus to determine the whole price.

for example a Longsword +1 keen, vorpal costs as it was +1 +1 +5 so a +7 longsword, the price of such item would be 98000 gp (bonus square x 2K gp)

even if you add the enhancement later on, it cost the whole price minus what you already paid

The Exchange

If a slot opens up I would like to be considered.

Ah....Bach (M*A*S*H reference)

@Alviss:
+1 Fullplate = 1650, you forgot to add the masterwork cost. Same with darkwood shield, you have to pay for masterwork along with the darkwood price so it should be 257. +1 Battle Axe = 2310
Potions cost (spell level*caster level*50), per the costs here. It looks like you were paying the price under the Paladin column, that's the price if a paladin makes the potion. For example, if it is a spell that is only on the paladin spell list. By convention it is assumed that potions were made by a cleric/wizard/druid unless it is not on their spell list.

You can run the numbers, but it looks like the over paying for the potions and underpaying for the gear will almost balance out. If you're looking for something to spend money on, a +1 on the shield would probably be useful. Other than that, you can keep the money and spend it during the fair, or just brag that your horde is bigger than Ziz's ;)

@All: I'm on GMT -10 time, so I'll be making the first posts today but it might come in a bit late in some time zones. I mentioned that I'm new to PbP GMing, does anyone know of any tools for keeping track of combat? d20 is a bit more dependent on tactical combat maps that I like... I think we can keep track of things without one but it might be handy.

GM:

Isn't the Full Plate 1,000 + 1,500 + 150 = 2,650?

Which mirrors the number you came up with for the Battle Axe:

+2,000+ 10 + 300 = 2,310.

The darkwood shield I get.

Fixing the potion costs reduces my consumables number below the target. I'll try to fix that ASAP, along with the armor/axe but don't delay your posting tonight for it. Not that I'm saying you would...

Thanks.

Yep, 2650. I mistyped.

First post should be coming fairly soon :)

There are a number of ways to track things, such as having players post essential information at the top of each in-game post ( e.g initiative roll, hp, AC) . For small areas and tight quarters I've seen DMs use text pictures.

personally I prefer posting a map jpeg. Each player can mark it up in paint (noting movement, area effects etc) and re-post or somply describe actions, then the dm fixes up the master pic. The best/ easiest way to implement this is to put everything in to map tools, then take pics of the screen to post. Using that method the dm can keep track of everything right there, and once the dungeon is built it's actually very fast. Player posts get slowed down a bit, but can be very tactically detailed.
There are a few web apps that can imbed and allow players to move tokens on simple maps. I can dig up some options if you'd like.
Im more than happy to help with player tactical maps, if you'd like.

Fixed pearl entry, and shuffled a skill point in to perform (comedy). All set!

I figured, but I liked your number better....

GM:
Adjusted potion costs and bought a few more to meet 2,500 expendable threshold and added +1 to darkwood shield. Dropped leftover gold appropriately. Unless you see some other mistake, Alviss should be done. Will respond to your initial gameplay post after my son goes to sleep. Thanks for running the PbP and picking me.

@Alviss: Looks good. There's one typo "2 Cure Moderate Wounds (900/3)" but that's the only issue I see. It's a *little* hard to image a dwarf finding room to carry five throwing axes and a battle axe at the ready, but I guess it's a convention of the genre...

Yeah, typo. Will fix. For me, it is dwarves with crossbows. Effective, but it does not seem very plausible.

I picture the throwing axes hanging from his belt and strapped to his back. Only one or two are immediately accessible for throwing. And only with his right hand.

BTW, everyone should feel free to read the stuff under spoiler tags for other players- it's the sort of thing you'd hear if we were all around the same table and may apply to you indirectly. I just use the spoiler tags to separate text into manageable blocks and call particular player's attention to particular parts. I'll also use them for keeping dice rolls from cluttering up the story.

Happy holidays you lot ;)

Thanks, and to you too

This is what it looks like with Alviss in the opening stampede:

oh, in that case...

Try to keep the completely ooc stuff in the discussion thread ;)

I forgot to use the modifier for Alviss' height and weight. If I can correct that, his numbers would be:

3'-9" plus X inches:
X=1d4 + 1d4 ⇒ (2) + (3) = 5

And that X times 7 pounds. If that's cool, I'll update the character sheet. If not, he'll just be a little short. Which probably doesn't hinder a dwarf too much.

As for the weight, he's been on the Sodden Lands Beach diet...

Thanks.

That's fine. I generally don't insist on random height/weights, just pick something within the normal racial limits and you're good to go.

@All: To clarify, for getting through the crowd you can force through the crowd with raw strength, slip through nimbly (escape artist), or use force of personality (intimidate).

(I originally put 'Simon' at the start of this post. Need more coffee in the morning. This was for the GM, so I'm fixing it. Sorry about that).

GM - As a general rule, if you have not posted since my last post/action, should I just wait until your next post?

As an example, I could have posted Thursday or can post this morning. But I don't want to risk my character's actions to get ahead of the others who haven't posted since your last one.

Just wondering as we work out the kinks. Thanks.

HolmesandWatson wrote:

I have no problem with that. I'm waiting for the GM to describe what I see. If you have something to do, just do it.

During combat initiative could force a more strict behavior. We will see.

Sorry 'bout that, I'm on vacation with my family right now. I'll try to put something up tonight. I aim for daily posts, but I might be a little slow for the next week or two.

I'm fine with modifying your previous post in response to a posting form another PC or new information that comes to light. In general though, I'd prefer that you wait for a new GM post before moving ahead with your actions.

We're not in strict tactical time right now, so you don't need to worry about thinking in terms of rounds and actions. I can fudge things enough to keep the game interesting and let everyone enter the combat proper at more-or-less the same time... modified by your actions, of course.

Okay. That seems like the way to go

Enjoy the vacation. No pressure from me on posting. One reason I wanted to play (and am about to run) a PbP is it works around real life, which is more important.

no pressure from me either, as long as the game is good I can wait the next post.

Enjoy your family time.

@Ziz: It is a bright, crisp autumn afternoon. Light penalties apply.

If the Dice roller here on the site was a real plastic 20 sided, I would melt it down...

A 1 and a 4 so far. Yeesh.

I added a History section to Alviss' alias. Probably doesn't matter, but I wanted to flesh out the character based on some ideas I had about his past.

I can give an hand with maptool if you want

let's see if it works...

here there is the base map, barrels and chets are for sample, can change that at leisure.
dark strip in the center is the road, lighter are the sidewalks and wood-floor are the roofs.
GM, If that is ok, you can tell me coordinates for everything and i'll populate the map as I see the post.

Not that I matter in this issue, but that is very cool!

@Lummel: Thanks! The battlefield is a bit more cluttered than that since most of the carts that were overturned took up more than 1 square, but it's fine to work with for now- we can move it over to the gameplay thread.

@Elesandira: You can place yourself wherever you like, keeping in mind the [url=flight rules[/url] specify that you needs to move at least half your base speed each turn or make a check. You are an outstanding flyer and barring situational penalties cannot fail a DC 18 or lower check (+17 to the skill, minimum roll of 1). You will need to roll if the DC is higher than 18 since you can't take 10s in combat.

I was planning to land on a convenient roof so that I could full attack.

My next feat will probably be hover, but that's not an option right now.

My previous link got messed up, but the fly skill specifies that you can hover with a DC 15 fly check which you can't fail with your bonuses... you can probably find a better use for the feat slot :)

Was this the FLY link you wanted?

Fair warning, I'm traveling back home from vacation over the next few days and my posting rate might be affected... pasting this into the discussion thread of all my active games.
