1 person marked this as a favorite.

As everyone sits quietly in Brackett's office, the man finally lumbers in from a backroom, clutching a rolled parchment in his large hands.

"G'morning, Pathfinders!", exclaims the broad-shouldered man. "I know ye ain't used to meeting at this time of the day after what that daft Dreng puts ya though. But me, I need my morning coffee before I send you into harms way!", bellowing a boistrous laugh at his own joke.

The large warrior then reaches unfurls the parchment on his oaken desk, revealing a map of the Inner Sea that leads north from Taldor as well as seven stones of various colors. "This here is the collection of various 'governments' that loosely are grouped as the River Kingdoms; we've been doing some work exploring this untamed area recently and a new ruin in the town of Thornkeep in the Echo Woods was brought to our attention. The Society quickly compensated the current lord of Thornkeep, Baron Tervin Blackshield, for exclusive rights to the lair in the center of town and we've already sent in an initial exploratory team to scout out the place. That team uncovered the fact that Thornkeep runs deeper than initially thought and we need more experienced Pathfinders to continue uncovering the relics from the ancient lair and chronicle its layout and history, if anything is still viable. The first group did encounter some strange necromantic abominations in the ruins, so don't think this'll be a cakewalk. Also need to watch out for the locals, as Thornkeep itself is a hive of scum and villainy. It's alright if you need to use the town's services, but try not to let the numerous criminal organizations that are common through the River Kingdoms know of your status as a Pathfinder. We wish not to encourage those Aspis dogs to head into town and give us trouble exploring those ruins, let alone the dictator of Lambreth or gothic Ustalav to impede us. And if the ruins even deeper, note the entrances and return back immediately so we can properly prepare the next party."

"You won't have a guide," continues Venture-Captain Brackett, "so keep your wits about you. The Echo Woods is known for banditry and what we know of Thornkeep is that it is controlled by a small number of organizations, most of 'em criminal. Think backwoods Riddleport if that'll help paint a bigger picture. Travel and provisions has already been arranged for tomorrow and it should take you about about a month travel by boat, river ferry, and foot. This journey will take you across the river borders between Andoran and Taldor, Kyonin and Galt, and finally travel alongside the edge of Razmiran until you hit the Sellen River and Fort Riverwatch. From there, it's a half day's journey to Thornkeep on foot. Finally, we want you to stay in Thornkeep no more than 4 days; unfortunately that was the request by Lord Blackshield so we'll have to respect that. However, I am sure that's more than enough time for you to tackle the ruins under Thornkeep. I hand picked you for a reason after all! Any questions before you start making preparations?"

"Why is Thornkeep of such interest to the society?"

Lem asks while viciously digging for a booger in his nose.

"It's an ancient underground structure thousands of years old. It might even predate Earthfall. Exploring a site like this is what the Society is all about!" the Venture-Captain says.

"And stop picking your nose, just use prestidigitation" he adds in a much lower volume so only Lem can hear.

"Right so I get it. You find some extremely dangerous site with treasures worth more than the cost of material components for raise dead and need us to do the dirty work, am I correct?

Well sir, you are VERY mistaken. I, Lem the bard, distance myself from the attraction of wealth and will gladly volunteer to un-gladly help uncover all the riches stored in this ancient underground structure... preferably behind Harsk's axe!"

And he takes a step back while giving Harsk an overly enthousiasmic pat on the shoulder.

"Also, can we expect any treasures down there?"

He adds with a grin.

Harsk looks up, his freshly lit pipe filling the office with a sweet smell. "O'course we can find treasure. My quesion is..." He pauses to remove the pipe from his mouth. "So if we're not Pathfinders, what'n blazes are we? A random group o'five tomb robbers? Or PERHAPS we're a religious choir singing to convert the wicked?" Looking around the room, he snorts as he settles back into his chair.

Lini looks up from a small brown spider that was crawling across the table, "Call us whatever you wish, the objective appears relatively clear, and my report will be on your desk upon our return. Are there any special supplies you predict us requiring for the journey? I came here with nothing but the pack upon my back, for nature has always provided for me, but I would never turn down the advice of a senior officer..I mean "advisor".

Her stare is intense, yet her excitement bleeds through with a smile as she looks at the map of the ruins. "Far be it from me to jinx a mission, but I would risk to say, this will be quite fun."

"Lini, Harsk, you two will lead this expedition"

"Lem, Seelah and Kyra, listen to your team leaders and follow their orders!"

"Good luck all of you! You are dismissed"

With the Venture-Captain's excellent instructions you make it to the Thornkeep dungeon complex. You quickly traverse the first underground level and find the stairs to the second underground level.

The narrow staircase ends in a short corridor leading to a large chamber, the center of which is dominated by a pool of stagnant water. An oily sheen covers most of pool, causing it to reflect a multitude of colors onto the walls and ceiling. The only light in this room emanates from a faintly glowing orb attached to the ceiling, and an acrid stench wafts heavily in the air. There is a simple wooden door in the eastern wall, and a set of ornate stone double doors to the south flanked by a pair of sandstone statues.

"Here, Harsk. This will help your singing. It will also make you feel heroic while you're at it."

Lem says smirkingly.

Cast Heroism on Harsk (40 minutes duration).

Lini looks at her party, assessing each's skills and strengths. Making a quick nod to each, she walks into the large chamber. She wrinkles her nose looking at the stagnant water, but dusts off an area of the ground in front of it and sits down. Droogami settles herself next to Lini, watching the room carefully as her master meditates. <Droogami will be taking a 10 on Seeking/Perception for a 15, unless there is ample time while the party gets settled for taking a 20, which would be a 25.>

"Do as you wish to prepare yourselves, the stench here alone is quite..oppressive. We will get going in a moment, assuming exploration is our clear and present objective, Harsk?"

Lini pulls from her bag the husk of a firefly, putting it close to her mouth she softly blows on it, the firefly "comes alive" and flies over to her sickle, resting on it and growing pale as the sickle begins to glow. <Lini casts Light on her sickle, with a flare of Prestidigitation>

From the same bag, Lini brings out a tiny jar of paste, sticking a finger into the paste, she collects a dot of it, then draws on her forehead the symbol of an eye. Bringing a small hempen journal from her bag and a thin charcoal pencil, she begins to softly hum and examine the room, both physically and magically, making notes as she observes. <Lini casts Detect Magic, then proceeds to spend the remainder of the time the party spends gathering taking a 10/20 on Perception, for a 22/32 result, and keeping concentration on Detect Magic>

"While we wait, let's see what secrets may hide in plain sight."

this is my first PFS play by post game, and games on gitp tend to be a bit looser on the rules than we allow, so if my "interpretation" of the rules ever cause a problem (for example, there is no pencil or hempen notepad on Lini's character sheet, there isn't enough time for a take 10/take 20, I'm making too many actions per post, I break etiquette) just tell me and i will make a stealth revision. I tend to check email more often than the mail here, it's ixious@gmail.com, and no I will never be offended at editing a post for the sake of keeping things legal and fun

Harsk looks at Lem and a glimmer of white can be seen through his dense beard, the only hint that he may be smiling. "Thank ye lad. This rough voice might just surprise ya!"

Harsk sniffs the air and scowls. "I don' care which way we go but from here on out, ye'll be armed."

Drawing his crossbow, he adds: "An' MY objective here is survival. Five walked in here and five will walk out."

Posted in Roll20: Harsk fires a bolt at the Blob 29 (Crit) vs AC for 11 damage. Confrim: 18 vs AC for 12 more damage. (+1 was added to ATK and DMG from Point Blank Shot)

If the crit confirms, Harsk has the 'Killer' trait so overall damage will get a +2

Harsk shoots an arrow into the blob, but Harsk is unable to note any disernable anatomy, so no critical hit!

The blob attacks Harsk in return as a terrible pseudopod lashes out from the ooze!

Droogami attacks the blob!

Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Reflex: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29

The Snow Leopard rips into the blob tearing off pieces. Part of the blob sticks to the cat's maw, but it manages to shake it off.

(+2 to hit if he can flank...although I seem to remember something about no anatomy meaning no flanking)

Reflex: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 8 + 2 = 13

Harsk attacks the blob with his axe, he hits, but his axe is covered in acid!

The weapon takes Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6 and is now considered broken!

Harsk calls out loudly but it's not in common!

"You damned blob of infernal pig intestine! You broke my favorite axe! I'll wear you on the bottom of my boots like dog crap!"

We seem to have skipped Lem's turn.
Check your email for the Roll20 link and you'll see how everyone's health looks there.
Harsks Axe was just melted by acid. Kyra may not have seen it from the stairs but maybe as she moved up and saw the dwarf swearing loudly and looking at his half-melted axe.

Lini searches and finds a pearl in the middle of the mosaic on the bottom of the pool. It radiates magic! (pearl of power level 1).

Grand Lodge

Lini looks quite a bit "worse for wear", her clothes in tatters, blood staining what little remains. "Well then, as far as starts go, that could have gone better" Staring down at the remains of the blob, Lini sighs, rearranges her rags for at least some modesty "At least it was not all for naught, now who here would make the best use of this until we get out and catalogue it?" Lini holds up a shining pearl, to her glowing with magic.

"I do believe from now on we will send our more durable companions in first to investigate. Overconfidence, not exactly the most healthy of sins. So how is everyone, wounds mended? Weapons tended? " Lini carefully examines Droogami, bringing out a small piece of sandpaper and filing away a cracked nail. "Good girl, be careful next time, but good girl." Lini pets her softly and looks over the group, one eye still red and stinging from her "experience"

kyra pours some water over her sword and makes a note to seek some mending for it later.
is it just if the damage exceeds the hardness it gains the broken condition? or is the sword actually damaged by the acid?

kyra carefully pulls off one of her outer vestments and offers it to Lini, You look like you could use this more than I need it. A scarf and shawl should do for you, hold still and kyra carefully ties it up and plays dress-up with Lini.

Looks around with pain in his eyes. It melted me axe... I don' beleive it. Can one of you mend this?

Kyra, at 50% damage the weapon is broken. I think a level 0 mending spell can restore HP to it

For anyone else who was wondering about Biter, I dont think ranger companions are the same level as druid companions and some fights (like vs acid blobs) I will leave him out of it.

kyra_the_brave wrote:

The acid bypasses the hardness entirely, so the weapon is indeed damaged. Both the axe and scimitar have the broken condition. A mending spell could fix it (if the caster is high enough level as it is weight dependant.)

Lini smiles from ear to ear at the gesture, then attempts to rearrange the shawl to her liking. "Thank you dear, when we get back to town I will need to buy myself a shawl like this, I think it's a good look!"

I'm imagining her outfit now looking much like Morrigan from Dragon Age, except more like a small child dressing up in cosplay as Morrigan, very fun! As for mending as the such, I'm hoping it's mostly flavor, as I'm pretty sure in character the ooze utterly destroyed my +1 leather armour, but if the DM is asking me to run around with touch AC the rest of the encounter, that could hurt

I rolled really low on the damage to clothing and armor (just 1). The magical armor is still quite ok, but regular clothing has almost no hitpoints (2 per inch of thickness), so that has dissolved completely
