World Wound--Disappeared --Confirmation

The gala inside the Chelish embassy appears to be in full swing, and as the faint light from the building falls upon the alleyway outside, Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin’s mission briefing is hard to forget.

Pathfinders,” Valsin boomed but hours earlier in the briefing chamber within the Grand Lodge, “Zarta Dralneen no longer exists. She never existed. She’s never worked for the Chelish embassy here in Absalom, and she’s never been in charge of the Chelish Pathfinders. At least that’s what I was told, repeatedly, to my face, through three layers of Chelish bureaucrats. I know those people, and they all knew Zarta. They didn’t just forget about her. She’s been ‘disappeared.’

I don’t know where she went and I don’t know who took her. What I need you to do for me is to go into the Chelish embassy and find out as much as you can by snooping around for a bit. I want to know where Zarta is, I want to know who took her, and I want to know why she was taken.

We can’t afford to offend Cheliax, so you’ll have to infiltrate their embassy quietly. I’ve devised a cover story that should get you in the side door with orders to see the new Chelish ambassador. An ongoing diplomatic gala scheduled for the same time and a clever ruse by Venture - Captain Amara Li — who is also attending the gala — will keep the ambassador busy, but you’ll have to act quickly if you want to secure the information we need before he arrives to meet you. You must get into the embassy, get what we need, and get back out of the embassy without the Chelaxians ever catching on that we’ve been rooting around.

Here is a packet of information that bears on Chelish interests in Sargava. It’s legitimate intelligence that we probably would have passed on to Zarta eventually anyway and that we’re willing to give up for free as our ticket into the building.

You’ll enter the embassy through the north entrance of the residential wing, where Chelish imperial security receives all of their informants. Even if you have a good cover story, you might have difficulty getting past the guards there—if necessary, you’ll have to resort to bribing your way through. Once you’re in, the guards will likely make you wait for the ambassador when you tell them you have important information for him. Don’t give it to anyone else, since once they have the information there will be no reason for them not to show you the door.

Amara Li will keep the ambassador pinned down at the gala while you break out of the waiting room and snoop around. She will also meet you just before you enter the gala to cast a message spell on you, just in case you need to keep in touch during your mission. You just need to make your way to Zarta’s chambers — they’re in the southwest corner of the residential wing, but you’ll have to find a route that doesn’t intersect with the gala’s attendees or residents of the embassy. Try to get in and out in less than an hour. That’s my best estimate at how long the gala and Li can keep the ambassador preoccupied. Once you’ve got the information and made it back to the waiting area, you just have to wait for the ambassador to find time to see you.

My informants tell me that Ailenia Hospar, one of the clerks you’ll likely run into at the embassy, is addicted to shiver. I’ve procured some of the drug for you to slip her if she initially proves less than accommodating. You may also have to deal with Anstrella Trelax, the pompous night-duty officer. Beyond that, what you’ll face is beyond my knowledge. I’ve ordered for you to receive several tools that might help you in your mission. Good luck, Pathfinders.

Standing before the Chelish embassy, Kiyoshi adjusts his robes beneath his scale mail and attempts to make himself look as 'official' as possible. His faith took him to hospitals and poor homes before it took him to these kind of events, so he felt alittle out of his element. However, an innocent woman had disappeared and the Pathfinders had taken the responsibility of finding her on themselves. It was an honorable goal, and one he respected. As a humble servant of the Master of Medicine he knew he would lack any skills to help he and his newfound associates gain entrance, but he had faith that they had been selected for a reason and the Qi Zhong had led him down this path for a reason.

Turning to the other Pathfinders he placed his fist inside his other hand and offered a bow.

"Honored friends, before we embark inside may I say what a privilege it is to be selected to perform this assignment with you. However, I must be honest. Subterfuge and espionage are not my traditional approach. I will try my best not to be a burden in the success of this mission. Should any of you sustain any injury or ailment on assignment, worry not, for Qi Zhong is with us.

Zander takes a moment to burnish off an invisible blemish from his breastplate as he examines his companions. He had shifted his vision to that of piety and sin long before arriving at the embassy, and his stomach was roiling over the number of people who delve too strongly into the darker end of the scale. Still, it seemed his companions were not cut from that cloth, and for that he was thankful.

Cant rightly say I know who Qi Zhong is, but I'm happy he's with us. remarks Zander with a grin, adjusting his leg to ease some of the strain of standing for so long. The old war wound always acts up at the worst time. he thinks to himself.

Theo offered a half glance to the embassy, as he scratched the back of his head. He wasn't worried per se and he would never knowingly be nervous. He'd dealt with individual Chellaxians before, sure, but he'd heard stories about their fire and brimstone routine. And for their first mission to be walking right into the biggest concentration of them and 'snoop' around their stuff? Well, that just gave him cause for... concern. Yes, he liked that: concern. That's all it was.

But then again, they didn't have a plan for the inside of the embassy. And they didn't even know what exactly they were looking for. For a moment, he was seized with concern. He fingered the knives tucked into his bandolier, counting them for comfort when the cleric brought him back to his senses.

He managed an easy smile and placed his hand on Kiyoshi's shoulder,

"It's good to have you along Brother. And don't worry about being a 'burden'. We work together on this and we'll be in and out of there before the Chellish realise what hit them. Besides, five will get you ten, you'll be the one who finds what we're looking for."

After listening intently to the Venture-Captain's briefing, Dasim spends a few more seconds examining the exterior of the embassy. The music and general noise of many conversations could easily be heard outside. Helpful in covering up any unfortunate noise from their venture.

His attention turns to the others as they speak. Returning the healer's bow with a nod of his own he says in a smooth, pleasant voice, "Dasim Travani, at your service. Let us hope we don't need your skills, but as the warrior says, I too, am happy to have you with us."

His eyes flick back to the Venture-Captain as he adjusts the brightly covered scarf wrapped around his neck. "You mentioned specialized tools requisitioned for this mission?"

"Yes I did. Here you are. Make sure they go to those who need them most. The party won't be for hours, so take some time to get anything else you may need. Remember, if you cannot find it in Absalom, it doesn't exist." as the venture captain finishes he hands you two scrolls of disguise self as well as two elixirs of hiding courtesy of the Pathfinder Society.

Theo picked up a vial of the elixer, held it up to the light and shook it, watching the thin, silvery liquid spin and swirl. How did this stuff help you hide?

"Ugh, I don't get it. Magic, right?" he shook his head and shrugged. Turning to the rest of the team, he offering them the curio in his hand, "I'm pretty quiet as is, I figure these could go to people who aren't so light on their fee-"

He caught sight of Zander favouring his leg and stopped short.

"Uhm... Sorry, didn't mean it like that."

Clearing his throat with a wry grin, Dasim nods his agreement with the knife fighter. "He's correct, despite the...err...poor choice of words. Those less used to moving in the shadows would benefit more from the potions."

Stroking his neatly trimmer beard in thought, he contemplates the scrolls. Finally he says while looking to the group, "But the scrolls may be of more use to those speaking with the guards and embassy staff. Any thoughts?"

The so-called “spy’s entrance” is a nondescript entrance in an alley that runs along the north side of the Chelish embassy. The only feature distinguishing the spy’s entrance from other doors piercing the alley walls is the presence of a guard in Chelish imperial livery. The guard is a man by the name of Vanius Gestanian.

Once everyone has signaled their readiness, Dasim will tuck his flute and one of the scroll cases under his arm as he leads the way down the
alley toward the guard. Whistling softly, he stops a few paces from the Cheliaxian.

"This looks like the place lads. The ambassador's clerk said we should enter at the north door, us being special entertainers for his
Lordship."

Finishing his approach to the guard, he provides a deep courtly bow.

"Chepe's Courtly Troupe at your service. We are here at the ambassador's request to provide special entertainment for the gala. May we pass?"

As he completes the bow, Dasim steps in and up to whisper in the guard's ear while slipping two gold measures into his palm. "Don't look, but I think we are being followed. We've important information for the ambassador about the empires holdings in Sargava. Information that someone else, would like to get their hands on." He glances back down the alley as if expecting pursuers to pop around the corner at any moment.

"Keep your eyes open and let me know if you see anyone loitering around the alley. There'll be another measure for you on my way out if the alley is clear."

Vanius is satisfied, by Dasim's generosity, smiling, he opens the door and directs the you to the reception room. The red paint that covers the walls of this high-ceilinged chamber does little to hide the raised outlines of ancient religious mosaics that once decorated this former temple. Behind the chamber’s large and imposing desk sits a woman in clerk’s clothing. Vanius introduces the woman curtly, "This is Ailena Hospar. before returning to his post.

She is intransigent and bureaucratic, and appears a little miffed "You don’t have an appointment and worse than that, you seem to be operating outside the normal channels."

Kiyoshi looks on, somewhat taken aback by the ease at that guard is bribed and how quickly Dasim gains them access. He'd heard that Varisians were renowned charmers (and many less complimentary things too) but this was the first time he'd ever seen it in person.

Stepping inside the chamber beyond he was saddened to think that this former place of worship, regardless of the faith it was devoted too, had now become an embassy of corruption and excess. No sooner had he thought that did he notice Ailena Hospar, the clerk mentioned in their briefing and supposed Shiver addict. The idea of feeding her addiction was less than appealing to him and flew in the face of his faith.

The Tian priest stepped in behind Dasim and whispered over his shoulder. "If possible, could you talk us past this woman without feeding her addiction?" It was a question, because despite his concerns about her well being, he knew that finding Zarta took priority over saving an addict from herself at this moment in time. If Dasim could do it without giving her the drugs, excellent. Otherwise, he would keep the clerk in is prayers.

Dasim gave Kiyoshi a sympathetic tap on the arm to let the healer know he understood and sympathized with the man's feelings. Shiver was commonly used in some of the circles he had traveled in and he had seen what it could do to descent folk. But at the same time, he couldn't jeopardize the mission. Something had happened to Draleen and he was determined to find out what.

Throwing on one of his best smiles, Dasim approaches Ailena and offers her a deep bow sweeping the hood of his cloak back from his head.

"My apologies for the disruption of the usual channels. However, we were being pursued by hostile forces seeking to prevent the information we carry from reaching the ambassador's eyes. If you could just show us to a room where we will wait for the ambassador?"

Rising and stepping back his brows furrow slightly as his tone becomes solemn.

"Clearly you are a lawful and patriotic woman who takes her job seriously. As do I. Which is why I am here after slipping through dingy alleys and filthy backwaters eating horrible, barbaric food for the past several days." He smiles again meeting her gaze with his own. "I would much rather be attending his Lordship's gala, with an elegant and attractive woman like yourself on my arm, but alas duty calls."

Theo shuddered slightly at Dasim's attempt at charm - he had laid it on a little thick, and Theo's initial impression of Hospar lead him to believe she wasn't the type to melt under glowing Varisian charm. A pity, because the charm offensive was Theo's preferred tactic too.

"My friend, he's uh... a bit of a dog" Theo chuckled, stepping forward and gently nudging Dasim in the side before flashing him a quick wink. "Can't help himself around pretty ladies."

He smiled sheepishly and offered his hands up apologetically,

"But he's right, we're sorry, but we wouldn't come at this time if we didn't have important information for the ambassador. And we're hoping you can help."

Zander sees the others floundering and does his best to come to the rescue. Much like Okawe, Kiyoshi looked on awkwardly at the conversing happening ahead of him. Both Dasim and Theodore had taken a fairly laid back approach to their conversation with the clerk, especially Dasim. Now Zander had interjected with a more official stance. All he could do was hope that the Shiver addict was pliable to one of their approaches. The last things the priest wanted to see happen were either her growing suspicious or them having to barter the drugs to her.

Kiyoshi offered a silent prayer to Qi Zhong and hoped that one of his allies would be able to secure them entry.

The room is sparsely furnished with only a few old chairs and a couch. Two doors—one to the east and another to the west—lead elsewhere within the embassy.

Ailena guides you to the waiting area (A2 on the map). "Knock if you need me." The woman turns and leaves, locking the door behind her. "For security reasons, I am sure you understand." you hear her announce through the thick, oak door.

This short hallway doesn’t appear to get much use. (A2) The only other door is locked, but the hall ends at a set of crimson draperies hanging from the ceiling to the south. Peering beyond the eyond the draperies lies the north gallery (A5). You can wait in this empty hallway without fear of being seen while they figure out how to proceed.

Peeking beyond the curtains:

The north gallery is a hallway that runs along the north edge of the grand ballroom (A7) and is separated from it by heavy red curtains. To the east, the hallway extends beyond the ballroom with a door to the gardens. Through a door on the north side of the hallway comes the racket of the kitchen. This is the hallway that the embassy’s servants use to move food, dishes, and other supplies between the kitchens and the ballroom and foyer where the gala is in full swing. Loud discussion and music can be heard through the curtains as the guests enjoy themselves.

This hallway is bustling with servant activity, but you believe that with a little patience you may be able to time a break to either duck through the curtains from area A4 into the ballroom with some degree of ease, to the kitchens with a little difficulty, or to make it all the way to the garden door, the most difficult timing. Only one PC can time the break, but she can attempt her Perception check as many times as she wants; each attempt causes the PCs to spend 2 minutes waiting for their chance.

The servants appear to be somewhat cowed, so you reasonably believe you may instead just stride down the hallway like they know where you’re going, Bluff, again only one PC, but you cannot make more than the one check, you believe this will take only 1 minute.

This scenario has a Strikes system. Each time you fail a task, you earn one Strike. Think Baseball.

Sczarni

Both the Bluff and the Perception are single checks made by one and only one PC.

The Perception check can be made more than once until you succeed. - Failure = Try Again, loss of 2 minutes.

I believe the Perception check would preclude Aid Other by the wording of the Module itself. One is watching, and the others are bolting across depending on when the preceptor says to go. I believe you are fine with Guidance though.

The bluff check is all or nothing. - Failure = 1 Strike

This does not directly preclude others from aiding, such as by casting guidance, or playing along on a bluff check for an Aid Other bonus.

Theo caught the keys and smiled back at the cleric,

"A bit ropey there for a moment. Didn't think we were going to make it without you Zander."

He stuffed the keys into his pocket, moved over next to Dasim and crouched down,

"I say we just go for it." he whispered, "Just walk through like we own the place, always works for me."

Zander nods at Theodore’s comment, as it mirrored his own. Taking care to hide any features that might impart his normal affiliation, Zander steps out into the hall, walking purposefully toward the gardens. If he catches any of the servants looking at him he glares back, ”You would do well to forget you saw this, Anstrella doesn’t like her business being nosed about. You don’t want to become some devil’s plaything, do you?” he’ll growl, continuing on as if he cares little for wellbeing of these lesser peoples. Greater good. I shall have to serve much penance after the activities of today. Irori forgive me

Kiyoshis eyes widen as Zander strides out into the corridor before they'd committed to the task at hand. Quickly offering a prayer to Qi Zhong for Guidance to aid him along, the cleric steps out behind Zander, also acting as if he belongs, however not mirroring his aggression towards the servants. Placing a hand on Zanders shoulder he calmly gestures towards the doors into the garden.

"That way."

Kiyoshi will cast Guidance on himself, then make a Bluff check to Aid Another on Zanders Bluff check. You took a risk there man, better letting the rogues take point on Bluffs.

Expecting to get Dasim's nod on the manoeuvre, Theo shot out from behind the curtain flustered. Staring fixedly on the door to the garden, he moved quickly to the door to the garden.

Watching the others shoot out into the hallway, Dasim mutters a few silent curses to himself as he waits for the right moment before following. Not wanting to leave any stone unturned he ducks into the kitchens and flags one of the staff.

"The musicians will need some bread and watered wine for the next break." He says with mild, but steadfast authority. "Fix me a tray and I'll see it delivered."

Once he has the tray he'll step out of the kitchens and catch up to the others in the garden using the impromptu disguise to help him move past any onlookers.

Only one person gets a check, sorry I thought I was clear, but since the first beat the DC by a good amount, no harm no foul

Marching down the hall like you own the entirety of the Cheliax embassy, no one pays you any heed. the staff is far too busy getting things in place for the ball happening just down the hall. Cooks and scullery maids fly by in a flurry of hot, yet painstakingly careful, work. Having crossed the hall, you find yourself in the garden.

These gardens shine in the moonlight, but dark shadows hug the lower reaches of the bushes, topiary, and trees. Two marble staircases wrap around a balcony where revelers are silhouetted against the light shining from the ballroom’s stained-glass windows. A tall wrought-iron fence divides the garden from the city beyond and below. Small servant’s doors enter the garden from the north and the south.

The gardens have an abundance of shrubs and other hiding places, but the open stretches are well lit from the ballroom and the balcony is amply peopled with potential observers.

Zander looks to the rogues to take the lead, as stealth seems to be the skill required at this point.

Theo crouched down again and surveyed the lush gardens. He stooped slightly, craning his head to spy the ongoing ball and let out a low whistle - nice party, the wine was flowing and there were plenty of unsuspecting rubes. Plus whatever would have been upstairs. He sighed and shook his head, thieving and conning werent exactly his line of work but he could appreciate a missed opportunity.

Wistfully, he glanced over at the on lookers at the balcony, then back to the garden, picking out a path through the ornamentation.

He nodded back to his comrades with a confident smile.

"Might be time to tan those elixers chaps - drink 'em if you've got 'em. See you on the other side."

With that he slipped out of the servant's door and into the garden.

Kiyoshi withdrew an elixer from his belt pouch, staring out across the garden. The potion was his best hope of succeeding in the crossing undetected, especially given the heavy scale mail donned over his priestly robes. Tossing his shield back over his shoulder he stepped down behind Theo and Dasim, trying to mimic his movements as they moved across the garden.

Unfortunately, even with the magical enchantments masking his armour clanking and nervous movements, the cleric fails to mirror the subtly and grace of his allies.

The first two rogues make it across the garden with little difficulty. Unfortunately, Kiyoshi's heavy slow movement is rather difficult, and he barely manages to move brush to brush without being detected. It occurs to you that faking it worked once before, perhaps that would work again?

Zander watches Kiyoshi have difficulty, and gulps down some anxiety. Pulling out the other elixir of hiding, he drinks it down, amazed as he watches as the shadows seem to elongate and welcome him to their fold. Passing from shadow to shadow, he tries to rejoin the others on the far side of the garden.
