Taking one last quick glance up and down the alley before picking her way through the traps Shang revealed in the yard, Tieszla joins the two men at the back door of the house. Along the way, she draw the greatsword from the sheath on her back. Upon arrival she nods rapidly, signaling her readiness to Walther and Shang as the atmosphere fills with tense anticipation.

As the door swings open, the sharp sound of a string snapping rings out, a crossbow bolt shooting out as a tall figure draped in robes stands guard at the door.

Surprise Round:

Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Damage: 1d8 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + (4) = 8

The bolt strikes Ophelia in the shoulder with enough force to overcome some of the thick metal that acts as armor for the clockwork woman. Three damage, after DR.

Ophelia's Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Laznist's Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Navia's Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Cultist's Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

As Ophelia's countdown ends, Walther opens the door from off to one side, so that Tieszla can keep her weapon ready as the doorway clears before her.

Almost as soon as the crossbow bolt strikes Ophelia, Navia darts through the doorway and attempts to tackle the shooter.

Grapple: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

The cloaked figure doesn't have time to react as Navia beard down upon them and tackles them.

As the back door swings open, you can hear a string going taught, followed by the sound of glass crashing onto the ground just in front of the door. A flask of acid rigged into a crude trap tied to the other side's doorknob explodes right by you.

1d8 ⇒ 6

Thankfully your decisions to stay by the door protect you from the brunt of the blast, but you each get splashed by some of it.

1 damage.

Ophelia will have to wait for her turn. I'll update the damage :) (I assume the acid was on Walter & Co)

Yes, the second half of that post is related to the second group. I'll mark it a little clearer next time.

Bwahaha, I've never gotten the chance to do that in a game until now! >:)

If he can see someone else, he'll attack them with magic missile. If not he'll ready to attack any hostiles that pop up.
it is my understanding that Ophelia and Walter each cast message on the other team.
"Combat. One guy." Laznist calls over the mystical link.

Laznist doesn't see anybody else in the room. It's a dimly lit entrance; down the hallway you can see a living room open up, decorated but not looking like it's been very lived in. Along the way down the hall are two doors.

DM

Laznist readies himself, spear held one handed. Anything coming through those doors is in for a bad day.
ready to cast MM, done. Cultist is up next?

The cultist struggles, howling loudly as it fumbles for a dagger hidden in its cloak and tries to bury the blade into his attacker.

Cultist's attack: 1d20 ⇒ 20 Its +2 to hit offsets the -2 from being grappled. Oh. Crit. Ouch.
Cultist's confirm: 1d20 ⇒ 18 My condolences.
Cultist's damage: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (1, 1) + 2 = 4

It manages to sink the dagger into Navia's side, still shouting and flailing.

Also, newbies, the way turn order is handled is as so; everyone before the enemy moves. Once the enemy moves, everyone is free to move "out of turn", and once everyone else has, the enemy moves again. Speeds combat up greatly.

Unable to avoid all of the corrosive liquid, Tieszla hisses with a grimace as the chemical bites into her flesh. She is quite grateful that Walther opened the door while she stood back instead of opening it herself. Taking care not to step in the gurgling puddle of acid, the Inquisitor peers into the house from the open doorway.

The impact of the bolt and the resulting screech of torn metal is enough to distract Ophelia for a few precious seconds as the other rush in and engage the cultist. Confusion momentarily crosses her porcelain face for a moment and she grasps the bolt with her free hand. With a neutral voice she merely states "I've appear to have been shot..." and strains for a moment, ripping the bolt straight out and tossing it aside. It leaves behind a small but obvious hole in her shoulder affording the keen-eyed a limited view of her shoulder joint full of gears, tension wires and cogs. "Only minor damage." she continues and enters the room. Glancing around she notices only one enemy, the one Navia tackled. The clockworks glassy eyes focused on his blade and she lashed out with her whip, looking to deprive the cloaked figure of his weapon.

Disarm, CMB: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 2 = 9 VS cultist CMD (-2 for grappled). Failure by 10 or more means Ophelia drops her whip. Reach prevents cultist from taking an AoO

Front Door:
Ophelia fails to pry the whip from the struggling figure's hands.

Back Door:
The makeshift acid trap rigged onto the back door seems to be the only security measure in place. Shang and Tieszla can see a kitchen, looking pristine and barely lived in. No dishes needing to be washed, no food lying around anywhere. Just furniture.

Head occasionally jerking involuntarily, Shang crosses the kitchen, looking to see where the way out would be.

He stops, looks around, pulls out a scorpion tail, and crunches down on it. He shudders and hunches over, appearing to shrink. Then, it becomes clear that he actually is shrinking. Standing at about half his original size, he continues out of the kitchen.

I suppose I'd best follow Shang.

Walther follows Shang into the kitchen, looking around cautiously. He uses the potion of Anticipate Peril Shang provided, then takes out his crossbow.

We can see Navia and someone she's struggling with from inside the back door. But I suspect that if we go straight there, it may go badly for us.

Navia yelps as the man sinks his dagger into her side, but continues trying to maintain her grip on him. The pain only serves to cause her to intensify her hold on the struggling man.

Grapple: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

"Ow! Yes, we need to tie him up or turn out the lights for now while we check the rest of the building. I'm also assuming that we might have a few questions to ask, too!"

For future reference, on each subsequent round that he's unable to free himself, I would add a +5 to my grapple check correct? This is the first time I've really utilized grappling so I want to make sure I get it right!

DM

"Sure."
Laznist's time in the guard has left him all too familiar with techniques for dealing with recalcitrant.

Further, while he might deny it he has a strong urge to lash out physically. The disappearances, Dara's death, the fact this man has injured Ophelia and Navia; Laznist doesn't hold back as he turns from his position, trying to smack Navia's prisoner in the temple with the butt of his spear.

No Navia, it's just a flat +5 in further rounds, not a cumulative one. And yes Laznist, he eats a -4 AC penalty, so your attack hits.

Laznist's attack makes him cry out and wince, but does nothing to keep him from making noise.

Shang observes the struggle, shrugs, and quickly snaps off his crossbow bolt into Navia's assailant.

Nonchalantly, he loads his crossbow again.

Shang's bolt strikes the figure, who immediately goes limp as the projectile embeds itself into its shoulder. The struggling and noise cease immediately, and in the stillness you can hear ragged gasping as it begins to bleed out.

The figure continues moaning and writhing, gasping for breath and in extreme amounts of pain. The front door remains open, and fortunately nobody has yet come running to see what's going on.

Ophelia looks around in the room, judging the present lighting conditions. With a mechanical nod she closes the front door behind them, taking great care to make sure it doesn't lock itself. She proceeds to conjure her Dancing Lights and sends one of them down towards the fallen cultist. "Soon." she replies to Shang and gently she leans in closer and pulls back the figures hood, curious as what it hides beneath it. My hood holds a secret. Perhaps he does too?

Beneath the hood is an emaciated woman, face sunken from exhaustion and malnourishment. As Ophelia peels back her hood, the pain makes her pass out, and she goes limp on the floor, alive but lacking the energy to grit through the pain any longer.

"Interesting." Ophelia leans even closer, her eyes glimmering in the Dancing Light. "Her condition appears similar to the slain sailor. Coincidence?" She pulls back her own hood, to prevent it from getting in the way of her examination. This also reveals her own face, leaving little doubt about her nature. The porcelain mask is perfectly still - in her haste and excitement to investigate her theories she completely forgot to animate for expressions - only the glass eyes quickly dart along the 'cultist'. Her painted red lips start to move to form an incantation and she starts looking for traces of enchantments or other magical tampering. "Out of my own free will, I would never leave myself unwound. I have seen few others abstain from nourishment had they the choice. Do you think she is underneath an enchantment?" As she spoke, she tried to answer her own question with the cantrip.

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

On the off chance that she was actually enspelled :)

Ophelia can tell that the cultist is under a Charm Person spell, the exact specifics of which she's unable to gauge from observations alone. Her mind has been compromised, some order deferred unto her which she has dutifully obeyed.

"Yes - indeed, there appears to be a Charm Person spell at work here." the clockwork woman exclaimed, excited that her theory turned out correct. However, as she continued on, her tone switched from a jubilant tinkle to more muted, worried chiming. "That means we can not leave her like this, can we?" She looks to her companions for guidance. "This one is clearly broken - but if we put it back together - she might assail us again. But not out of concious effort on her part..." She shakes her head and starts digging trough her backpack after rope, something that might ease their decision.

Certainly, we'll help her. And any others who we find that are participating against their wills. But keeping our team alive to defeat those who are controlling her must take priority. A charm person will almost certainly wear off before she wakes on her own. If we place in her in a side room for the time being, she should be safe enough for now.

"An enchantment, you say? Curiouser and curiouser," Navia says as she stands up and examines the wound in her side, wincing slightly. "Good shot with that dagger, but I've had worse." As she applies pressure to the wound with the palm of her hand, she regards Ophelia with a look of curiosity as the construct digs through her backpack. "I've got a set of manacles in my pack that we can use to restrain her," she offers. "Save the rope; we might need it later, you know?"

Ophelia looks up from her back and smiles. "That is certainly a wise plan. If Walter is correct, we can certainly pick her up later." And I've never actually noticed Walter being wrong! She tilts her head to the side, as if a thought just struck her. She glances between Navia and Laznist before closing her back and slinging it onto her back, signalling that she was ready to continue. They both have etchings on their shells. I wonder if they are the same kind? I'll have to ask later!

DM

Laznist has the sour expression of a man who has bitten into a lemon - and found half a worm.

He speaks quietly.

"Damn! Enchantment spell? I hate those spells. In the wrong hands it's worse than necromancy."

"If there's one mind controlled pawn there may be others. We're going to need to be careful about how we hit targets. Try not to kill any of the victims."

"On the bright side, we might find our companions here. Could be they've been mind controlled."

"We can manacle this one - good thought - but is she going to be okay? I know I was only going for sleepy-time, but Shang's bolt looked lethal."

"Let's start clearing this floor together."

Inactive

"I'm not much of a healer, but it looks like Shang managed to get her stable. She probably won't feel that great when she wakes up but she probably won't die, either."

Navia quickly digs out her manacles and uses them to shackle the unconscious woman. Standing back up, she looks around. "I'm with Laznist, we should try and clear this place as quickly as we can. Be on guard in case there are any others nearby; all the commotion in here is sure to have alerted them if so."

Shang shrugs. "Yes, it would appear to be the case, Laznist. Control some hostages, set them up to be fodder, and oops, who gets accidentally butchered by the guard? Rather clever, if you're evil. As for lethal... I suppose she could have died. But combining a quick act with my apothecary's skill, and she'll survive. Got all of you out of a jam."

Good point.

Walther moves up to whichever door looks more likely to be a closet where we can stash our "guard" and looks it over for any traps and listens for any movement beyond it before opening it.

Ready action to magic missile anyone attacking us from the doors

The doors are identical in every way. Both appear to be untrapped. One has silence behind it, while the other has the faint sounds of cavernous echoes whose original sounds have long since been lost to time and can't be made out fully.

With a low groan, the guard slowly comes to, and begins thrashing and shouting weakly. [b]"Uncuff me![b]" she screams, kicking at anyone near her.

Moving cautiously through the kitchen and dining room, mindful of the ongoing menace of traps, Tieszla joins the others just as the captive begins to cause a ruckus. Ophelia puts a hand on one of the doors and look to Walter. "This one is quiet? Be ready, something may still lurk in the dark!" She glances back at the rest of the team, making sure they are ready. Her eyes linger on the 'guard' for a moment before Tieszla knocks her out. Such an illogical request. Why would we uncuff her when we cuffed her in the first place? Silently she raises her other hand and extends three fingers into the air. Two, one and she opens the door, hopefully ready for what awaits beyond!

-4 to hit for non-lethal is a thing in Pathfinder :)

Nonlethal damage:
Nonlethal Damage

Nonlethal damage represents harm to a character that is not life-threatening. Unlike normal damage, nonlethal damage is healed quickly with rest.
Dealing Nonlethal Damage

Certain attacks deal nonlethal damage. Other effects, such as heat or being exhausted, also deal nonlethal damage. When you take nonlethal damage, keep a running total of how much you've accumulated. Do not deduct the nonlethal damage number from your current hit points. It is not "real" damage. Instead, when your nonlethal damage equals your current hit points, you're staggered (see below), and when it exceeds your current hit points, you fall unconscious.

Nonlethal Damage with a Weapon that Deals Lethal Damage

You can use a melee weapon that deals lethal damage to deal nonlethal damage instead, but you take a –4 penalty on your attack roll.

Lethal Damage with a Weapon that Deals Nonlethal Damage

You can use a weapon that deals nonlethal damage, including an unarmed strike, to deal lethal damage instead, but you take a –4 penalty on your attack roll.

Tieszla's strike hits the weak, subdued cultist and she returns to unconsciousness, going limp.

After the cultist is once again beaten into unconsciousness, Navia quickly digs around until she comes up with a scrap of cloth or something to gag her with.

"Until someone can remove that enchantment, we need to keep her quiet so she won't draw the attention of anyone passing by outside."

With that being done, Navia will draw her sword and wait for Ophelia to open one of the doors.
