The Avalon Chronicles

Game Master lynora

This is a high level rules light game set in a school for magical kids, kinda a mash-up of Soul Eater, Harry Potter, and X-Men. :)

Welcome. ;)

Now for my posts...

Fei that Knowledge check should be enough to get pretty much whatever info you want on Great Wyrm blues, but won't tell you anything about her class levels. But Fei should definitely realize that she has class levels (or however you wanna phrase that in-game).

One thing I'm not too sure on: should Valor's Mantle work against Vai? I thought champion powers didn't apply their bonuses against other champions?

Edit: For example, Fei would know that typical great Wyrm blues have CL 17 for their magic, and Epic Spellcasting requires a minimum CL of 21, so he could infer minimally that Vai has advanced her CL by 4 through class levels.

Male Drow (noble) 14 Ranger

I think you can only negate Champion abilities that attempt to affect you directly.
Using a champion ability to affect a table, then throwing it doesn't count.

IE. If Krays tried to use his soul sucking thing, another Champion could decide to not be affected.
If he uses his champion powers to summon and bolster undead and send them after a Champion, it would still work.

M Extrodinaraly Contrary Meatbag Fourm pyromancer 1

Well, I'd think that self-target thigns still work. You can still flee another champion with teleports, for example.

Male Drow (noble) 14 Ranger

That too.

Ditto.

On the mantis shrimp thing.

It's just a bit of weirdness from the changeover from the old format for PBPs to the new one with the connected tabs. Once I was officially listed as GM I couldn't also be listed as a player. :)

Also, hey, a post! Here's hoping this holds up. I am beyond sick of being cut off from being able to interact.

Welcome back. :)

I don't think it's been that crazy much in game time since you left so it shouldn't be too hard to get back up to speed.

As was pointed out up thread, yes, Champion abilities that are range:personal still function just fine. He can't directly effect her, but he can use an SLA to give himself better aim. Same goes for her. She can use her ability to buff herself, she just can't use champion abilities on him directly.

I'm of the same mindset as you FCD, Champion abilities do not affect another if not desired, thus its Champion versus Champion on their own 'natural' terms.

As for the teleport bit, that's only affecting the Champion in movement, so moot point.

As for the summoning of undead, if done with a Champion ability, trickier, but not that hard to resolve. They could exist, but effective 'level'/strength might be much more reduced or something.

It's only when an act, by way or extension empowered by the Patron, affects the other, and creations are manifestations in this case if the Champion ability is employed to summon/create such, that the creations are therefore extensions of the Champion and thus ignored/negated against themselves if desired.

Just consider the crux of the reason: The Patrons do not directly, and Champions are extensions of this 'vow' battle one another. Their proxies duke it out on their own merits.

Hope that makes sense, it does to me. It'll require some creativity, naturally, and GM handling.

Two cents.

I see it as I should be nowhere near any two champions fighting.

Gomen - I should've put that in OOC to avoid confusion (=^-^=)

The Knowledge check was to see if Fei could use his Kirin Style/Kirin Strike feats to add 20 points of damage to that attack. Though it does give him an idea of base racial abilities too, aye :)

And as Lyn already weighed in on (since real life drug me away from the keyboard before I could finish this post)....yep, personal abilities work fine. All of Fei's Champion abilities are 'buffs' instead of any direct 'attack' stuff like many of the others have. After all, Courage is more of a bard than a barbarian, neh? ;P

Male Drow (noble) 14 Ranger

Ryuzo can tell if another Champion is being deceptive. It affects himself, not others. Him trying to deceive another champion, on the other hand...he'd only get non-Champion bonuses, or other mundane means.

Alright cool, I can work with it. Maybe I'm misremembering an old post on this. It has been like 3 years since we sorted this stuff out.

Kirin Style: Honestly beyond a certain point the CR system really starts becoming meaningless IMO. Great Wyrm blue is CR21, plus add in a couple for being a champion, minus a few for not having appropriate level treasure, add on a bunch for extra class levels and it all becomes a wash. I'd say CR30-ish which means Kirin style succeeds.

Male Weremonkey Rogue/Ranger/Trickster

Maybe Champion rules should be a doc that gets added to the Campaign info?

Yes, its not often that Champions do battle in such a way as to need to recall how things play out vs each other. But, that's exactly why having stuff we've decided in one central location helps. Three years in this game is an *insane* amount of posts to try and dig through, even with the search engine helping.

Also, it will cut down on time lost due to asking questions here that are already answered in the doc. Thankfully, Kryz was able to at least give a base answer, less than a half hour after FCD asked, and about three hours in total from him asking to his confirming the answers provided work for him. However, we all know that's not always the case, and a day or two could pass before solid answers are given. Unlikely, at best, as Lyn seems to always try to jump in if such a question arises, but not always.

Would be much more helpful to her, and the rest of us, to have all the rules that govern Champions in one easy to access section.

Got Pathfinder Unchained today. I love some of it, think other bits are dumb, and see no reason for anything from it to be used in Avalon.

My 2cp.

Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't really feeling it from the description of PU and pretty much was only going to get it if it was going to be heavily requested here. So I think we'll file this one under kitchen sink. (As in we have everything but the kitchen sink in use here.) :P

I thought that particular gem was already there, but maybe I left it out. *Double checks*

Okay, so yeah, I did include that writeup. I didn't clarify the corner case in point (that your powers still affect you, so buffs still work) so I will add that the next time that I update campaign info. Otherwise, I did specify about the powers not affecting other Champions. With examples even.

Male Weremonkey Rogue/Ranger/Trickster

Haha, I was just thinking about where teh DB3 has been. Missed ya buddy!

Also, while I lack the book(buying it soon), I feel like the variant classes in Unchanined could be used here, especially the Summoner. Also, the Stamina system for specific characters, and *maybe* some o the magic stuff? Beyond that, I doubt there's anything else we would/could use.

Shadow Lodge

Summoner is okay-ish, but there's no reason to add more house rules for people to min-max all to hell and back.

If anything, I'd advocate using Limited Magic and that's it(caster level when casting is always minumum required for the spell, and so is the DC. Example: 20th level caster casts fireball. Deals 5d6 and has a DC of 14). Same thing applies to SLAs.

We have enough rules to use as it is. No more are needed.

My main problem is that casters don't need their damage potential nerfed. They already struggle or fall way behind martial characters in the DPR category, and Limited Magic does very little to hamper a utility/buffing setup (which is where casters truly shine), other than making DCs laughably easy.

Thought experiment while I'm at work: What is Doctor Horrible's alignment (before the movie's climax)?

I'm going with CN. He wants to be evil, but he just doesn't quite make it there until the end.

Shadow Lodge

I'd still put him at CN, simply because you can tell he's only doing that stuff because he doesn't care anymore. He's not threatening people verbally or even firing his laser around.

Doctor Horrible is Chaotic Good.

Notice that he never actually injures anyone. He only disregards the questionable authority of the frankly awful government system on his world.

Captain Hammer is high Charisma true neutral, leaning on Neutral Evil. He's a selfish individual that only "helps" people for the fame and is needlessly cruel to Dr. Horrible."He threw a car at my head." It's his fault the gun explodes when he actually tries killing Dr. H.

FCD, did you need more for either Illithia or Vare?

One is being asked a question, while the other is via radio... Which I've no idea how or who in the school would respond too. Is there an administration office with ... Radio administrators?

Edit: unless I missed a response or two. Will check, so many posts from Voidwalkers invading lately.

There is a comm network for teachers. Probably goes through the school secretary. Also played by FCD.

I believe we're curently waiting for someone to notice the huge sized rainbow colored winged snake and the (for now) small forest fire

Also if anyone wants to join in and make a voidwalker, they're welcome to do so, this will likely be the only chance for such a race to appear.

No, we can head on in whenever. I just haven't felt up to writing it yet.

I'm trying to place where the forest fire is. The rift is close but not right next to Avalon, but I don't know how far from the rift either of them traveled before setting the scenery on fire. If they are close I think that Ryleh, Al, and Sheess were out in the woods trying to train Al to control his fear aura...unless I'm misremembering. But if I am remembering correctly, I imagine Sheessuroussen makes a very effective fire extinguisher. ;P

M Extrodinaraly Contrary Meatbag Fourm pyromancer 1

Not too terribly far.

Close enoguh the smoke would be noticable, at least.

Within sight of the building, but only recently so

Also, setting fire to the place was totally an accident....

Had some thoughts. I know, for me, having a thought at all is rare, so thoughts plural must've made you fall out of your chair. But here me out. :P

1. Is there a cure for normal lycanthropy in game? Like werewolf lycanthropy?

2A. Are all of the gem planets claimed? I think I offered to operate one and it was still up in the air. How many were there?

2B. OOOOHHHH it just occurred to me that if I can do one, it could be Alocatra(Tybs' planet for those that are new) and the dominant gem dragons there could be the ones Lyn and I talked about which would be sooooooo coooooool!

3. Has anyone ever considered the plane that we summon unseen servants from? Just a plane full of incredibly polite invisible people. They just constantly bump into each other because none of them can see each other. And they're just like "oh, pardon me good sir." "No, no, pardon me. I must say that if I could see your suit it would be impeccable today." "Why thank you. I assume the same of you as well, sir."

4. CELESTIAL KNIGHT. Apologies. I said we had only done a couple class, but I forgot to mention it's lunch right now...

3: as halarious as that is, unseen servent is a conjuration (creation) meaning that it's created with magic, not summoned with it.

remove curse, if it's like normal lycanthropy, does the job, so long as the mage in question is high enough level.

Sorry, remove desease.

Your cleric has to be 12th level or higher, and have to recive it within 3 days.

So if you've been a lycanthrope for a while, there's no cure?

M Extrodinaraly Contrary Meatbag Fourm pyromancer 1

Well, as per the wordng, eating wolfsbane gives you a DC 15 fort save to be cured of it, even then.

It's just that wolfsbane is also horribly toxic.

Shadow Lodge

Limited Wish, Wish, or Miracle.

And nothing "cures" natural lycanthropy.

K. Was considering it for a character, but I have a feeling it'd be solved inside a day.

Hoenstly, pick the right lycanthropy, and your charecter might not even want to be cured.

For example, a previously CE were-rat who becomes LE thinks to the affliction, and as such, finds his thoguhts clearer and more reasoable, and gets into trouble a lot less.

Nothing in the Lycanthropy template, mafflicted or otherwise, changes your alignment. Unlike in 3.5.

Aside from the fact that afflicted lycanthropes are under the control of the DM whenever they turn?

It doesn't actuslly change alignment, no.
But I'd assume that it's farely clearly still a curse, and results in you doing bad things when you turn.

At least, that's what I can see.

I'd imagine such a thing would influence you towords the preferred aligment.
Nothing instant, or unresistable, of course, but...
