Another man in a breastplate and black hooded robe appears. He mutters a phrase, and a burst of energy emits forth from him, enveloping everyone within 40 feet of him! Ha! That will help!
All players now take a -1 on attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saves, and skill checks, for the next few rounds...

Rafael moves forward, raises his crossbow, and launches a bolt at Guard #5, who is engaged in melee combat with friendly members of the group. The shot goes wide, and misses!
If you shoot or throw a ranged weapon at a target engaged in melee with a friendly character, you take a –4 penalty on your attack roll. You would be better off in this circumstance to cast a spell instead, such as using the wand of magic missile.

Thankful that the magnificent beast Chaandra stod in front of him, preventing any of the thugs reaching him directly, Bryce reloads his crossbow once again and takes careful aim at the ruffian in the back. He did not want to hurt any of his friends in the melee, so he has chosen a person behind those who were already engaged.
