Fethryth flips back in her journal. "I did research those golems...where is it...ah, here we go. They look like weaker versions of standard iron and bronze golems. They'll be immune to, well, a whole host of things but they're weak against adamantine weapons. That stuff is quiet expensive so we'd either have to pool our money or get luck and follow rumors to a stash. I keep meaning to go buy a simple protection ring, but I can chip in that money towards a weapon instead. I'd feel a lot better about going to this dinner knowing we can handle the golems."
Melaphi Dasan |
"I agree that taking control of the sentinels is the best option for dealing with them. I've mixed feelings on the dinner. That puts them in the position to dictate things as they see fit. I trust Crystals word - that trust doesn't extend to her allies. If we are to enter the keep I'd prefer to do so on our terms, not theirs."
"Garroth seemed to handle the one just fine, without adamantine - with all of us together I'm sure we could handle several of them should it be required. Ideally though we avoid them if we plan to take a look around on our own."
Patricie |
"As far as casting in front of them goes, as long as they can't hear me, we won't have a problem, as I can cast without moving. It's against my vows to wield metal, I'm afraid. I suppose we could outfit Trilby with something, but I can't imagine how that would work. And Garroth may have bested one, but not all of us have the fighting prowess he does, and it seems my skills are all but useless against them."
Melaphi Dasan |
"True, but between Trilby, Payet's talents, and my healing abilities we could handle more of them. Sorry Feth, your skills were certainly useful against that blood sucker, just not so much against these things."
"Well then Garroth and Feth? Yea or nay for the keep? And if yea, to the dinner? Or enter on our own terms?"
"Patry and Payet, you both seem in favor of entering the keep if I'm understanding correctly? Likewise then, to the dinner, or on our own terms?"
Payet Best |
"I'll go along on both trips, but if we're going to dinner I'd like some sort of a disguise if nothing else, I'm reasonably sure they don't know what I really look like yet, and I'd like to keep it that way"
Fethryth Teldanona |
"Yeah, about all I can do is stand there and look pretty as they stomp me flat. At least our hosts wouldn't be immune to my skills."
Fethryth sighs. "On one hand it's hard to trust these people. Really hard. But on the other, if any of them are sincere we'd likely blow their good will if we barge in spells blazing. I'd rather go to their dinner. Just with weapons and a good escape plan. Memorize the way we came in and be ready to run. Patry, you can summon fog right? We could use it to cover our escape."
Garroth Seren |
"Well, I aint inclined to go, just on what I know, but you seem so sure your bonny lass wont allow any funny business, so ill trust you and say, alright." Garroth grumbled, his mood making it clear that while his decision had been made, it had been a close vote in his mind, and he wasnt the least bit happy about it.
He nodded at Feth. "Yeah, we will be needin' a plan goin' in."
Patricie |
"I'm better at mist, but whatever you think will work best. I'd like to go to the dinner just in case they happen to reveal damning information by accident." "better at mist" is flavor, I'm trying not to prep spells that don't make sense for the character. While mist is a common occurrence in caves, fog...not so much.
Melaphi Dasan |
"I trust her to keep her word. I don't currently have any trust for the rest of them, that might change after the dinner. Or it might not."
"Sounds like the majority are interested in attending the dinner though, so I will get a message to her indicating we plan to attend. Until then let's learn what we can of the keep from the outside then. What do you suppose the chances of a floor plan being available sitting in a library, or some old wizards back room?"
Garroth Seren |
Walking around the city, hitting up the locations of past employers of various social status, Garroth tried to dig up any information on where one might find the intel they were looking for.
Knowledge (Local): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
When the time came for Mel to deliver their message, Garroth tagged along as security, not trusting their enemy to maintain any semblance of civility, even after the previous night of uneasy peace. Maintaining a safe distance, he did his best to blend in with the crowds, hugging corners and keeping his eyes peeled.
Keeping about 100 feet away, as long as it is possible while keeping Mel in sight, otherwise he closes the gap to remain in line of sight.
Stealth: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Fethryth Teldanona |
Would Garroth share that info about the library with the rest of the party? I'd happily send Feth there to dig around.
Patricie |
Patricie accompanies Feth on her research outing. Once at the military library, Patry gives the inventory a once-over. Finding nothing, she combs through them more meticulously.
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (3) + 13 = 161d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32
DM-Kal |
While Garroth and Melaphi are out getting into some kind of trouble, the rest of the party goes to the local military library.
I'll also accept Knowledge(history), Profession(librarian), Linguistics, and maybe some other stuff.
Fethryth Teldanona |
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Knowledge History: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Fethryth happily spends hours digging through the library's collection.
Patricie |
Patry becomes very intrigued as she reads about the history of the keep, especially the bit about the Fifty-Year Tyrant's siege of the keep.
Fethryth Teldanona |
anything about secret passages, hidden doors, maybe even where the original blueprints for the keep are?
Melaphi Dasan |
Taking a couple of corners to make sure he is out of visual sight of Victor and Sarcon, Melaphi slows to a idle walk to allow Garroth to catch up. He passed along the details of his conversation with Victor to the half-orc.
"In the mood for rescuing a priestess of a god of questionable morality?"
Garroth Seren |
"Not particularly." Garroth grunted, though that was likely as much of an agreement as he was willing to give.
Melaphi Dasan |
Melaphi grins, "I thought you might see it that way."
He rubs at his eyes and forehead, "You know anything about vampires? I intend to go assist - I won't leave an anathema to life like that roaming the city. I don't expect you or the others to come along though. I think your time is probably better spent learning more about the keep or our new rulers."
DM-Kal, based on my Kn Religion roll of 10 in the fight last night, is that the limit of my knowledge about vampires for now (or rather lack of knowledge)? Or would I know buying a stake or two might be of value? Or mirrors? Garlic?
Melaphi Dasan |
I'm not sure either. I'm not even sure what kind we fought as I'm not aware of any with grab or trip immunity.
"Well I need to head to the library... after I find Payet. What are you plans should I need to find you?"
Melaphi then heads off to find the bard and relay the same information to him, before heading to the library in hopes of finding out more about vampires.
Find Feth and Patry there he again relates the information. "How would you to feel about tracking down our dubious high priestess?"
Research Time for Kn Religion (Vampires - of the same type we fought: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Kn Religion: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Kn Religion (other types of vampires in hopes of having some similarities - no library search): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
And comes away knowing less about vampires then he started with.
Garroth Seren |
Triple 1, thats gotta be worth a pity prize from you DM.
"Ill be starin' into a mug I bet." Garroth said, still sounding none too happy. "Come lookin' for me at the usual tavern, ill be there."
Melaphi Dasan |
With no helpful information on vampires, and unsure if his companions intend to accompany him or not, Melaphi does the best the best he can to prepare for such possible encounter with more undead, stopping at a local church to purchase some holy water. 3 flasks
He heads to the cross street marked by Victor on the map.
DM-Kal |
Once inside, the orcs pillaged the wealth of the citizens, but were surprisingly restrained with their swords and axes. It seemed the Tyrant had no plans to raze the City, but rather sought to control it. Yet as he approached the Finders' Keep, the Fifty Year Tyrant and his personal guard were attacked by towering constructs that poured forth from the Keep to do battle in the streets. The Tyrant sent his ten greatest wizards to breach the side doors as he commanded his armies against the main gate itself. For three days the gate would not succumb and the constructs would not relent, and war ravaged the heart of the City. Yet at the end, the gate was opened from the inside and what remained of the constructs issued back into the Keep.
It is said that the giant-king kept four counselors to rule with him, the four wizards that survived the trek through the halls of the Keep and seized the throne room. Whether it was these wizards that placed the curse upon the Keep, or whether it was that very curse that claimed the other six, no one is certain. Yet since the days of the Fifty Year Tyrant, none has entered by any passage save the main gate and returned to share the tale. And since the Tyrant himself fell silent, the gate has never opened."
Patricie |
Once she finishes her research, she follows Mel's trail to the watering hole, and relates what she learned from her research, when she can get a moment alone. "It seems the last time the keep was taken, it was by ten wizards in the Tyrant's employ, mostly frost-wielding if I'm not mistaken. They used a side entrance. Only four of them survived though."

Fethryth adds "There are a number of service entrances into the keep. I sketched them out; I think they'd be our best bet if we're making a hasty retreat. The way the keep's constructed there's a courtyard just before the throne room with a lot of doors leading to it. It's perfect for them to get reinforcements in, but it would also give us a lot of options for getting out of there."
DM-Kal |
As for other vampires, you read many accounts of them doing incredible deeds, some less believable than others. However, what seems to be fairly well understood is that they are very stealthy and very charming, even said to control the weak-willed. They feed on humanoid blood, and and humanoids killed in this way may come back as vampires themselves. Like most vampires, they are weak to sunlight and shy away from holy symbols.

Speaking to Payet and Patry, there is no emotion in his voice as he lays out the facts as he seems them, "Now is not a good time to back out or split up. If you had reservations about coming, you should have stated such before we came out here as Garroth did. Now for good, or ill, these folk currently hold the seat of power in our city - I'd like to know more about them and what their true motives are as their actions so far have been very dubious - it's possible simply a huge misunderstanding due to Ransaq's actions the first time we met them - if so we can clear that up." His tone relays that he doesn't believe it is that simple.
"If their intentions are good, we can clear things up. If they are not, we can make plans to mitigate their rule, or simply remove them from the throne."
"I will not walk away when an undead abomination has the living in their clutches. Your choice of course is your own to make."
He digs into his bags and pulls out a whistle. "If you intend to remain up here, take this whistle." he hands it to Patry. "Blow it hard and long if there is trouble up here." He gives the bard a warm smile, "You I expect can make plenty of racket without the whistle."
Garroth Seren |
Garroth nodded at Melaphi. "I agree with Mel, to a degree." He crossed his arms, looking rather annoyed with the situation. "Still, if its between leavin' a team member behind and tryin' to help that awful woman, I'm not sure id take the latter."
He looked at Patricie. "Whether we go at day or night, does it really matter? Either way its gonna be dark in there." He motioned towards the hole with a nod of his head, before making a face as if he just remembered something. "Besides, didnt the research tell us that these special jumpin' vampire critters dont care about the sun? Or somethin' like that?"
Payet Best |
"no, what I found was that they aren't spellcasters, they don't like holy symbols, and sunlight does kill them, that's it, and besides, I did voice my reservations about this outing I said we should have been wresting control of the automatons from them during this time, I came because as awesome as I am I can't fight those things alone"

Did we lose one of your posts? I'm just not seeing any posts up thread of you indicating the above. I do recall you saying you'd come in the discussion thread if I'd asked, but that is the extent of it.

huh apparently so... I know I remember making such a post... Possibly myself and/or payet remember things that were intended to be said but never actually were, that or during one of the many site mantinances the post got eaten *shrug*
