Bloody elf! This is what you call an adventure?. The raven wheels around in the air and heads up towards the second level as fast as his wings can take him. He tries to ignore the pain in his breast--he must be brave for the other two-legs, after all. It wouldn't do to let them know how serious he was injured. He was their rock, their shield. He was the moral and spiritual leader.

He flutters into Yeidhrennor's waiting hands and curls into a tight ball.

Oh you poor thing! I never should have sent you down there all alone in the dark. Yridhrennor sobs as he cradles the wounded bird.

He inches closer to see if he can see anyone in the hole.

if he can see:

If he can see someone he cast's daze on them, since he's out of good spells

if he can't see:

If he can't see anyone, he'll use the scale to levitate himself down towards the ground, but after everyone the crossbow people have fired
Question: could he let himself fall 30 feet, and then use the levitate scale to shalt his fall and then slowly drift tot the ground the last 10 feet?

Gay Male Inhuman

Ok. Lesson learned. Everybody needs initiative. :)

Rules Stuff:

Abelard: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Galin: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Saito: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Steave: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Theran: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (18) + 0 = 18
Yridhrennor: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28 always acts in surprise

Yridhrennor's up. Order is Yridhrennor, Falfaeren, Theran, Steave, Badguys, Galin, Saito, Abelard. I'll roll Fal's initiative into Yridhrennor's when they're back together.

Yridhrennor cannot see foes at the bottom of the hole. If he wants to try the levitation parachute trick then I'll allow it, but there'll be a reflex save to see if he can get the timing of the activation right. Failure would mean an unscheduled early landing (75%, brings falling damage) or early activation (25% chance, would roll to see where he ended up in the shaft).

But further complication here. If Y delays until after the badguy init, then Theran and Steave will be in the shaft. Elevation would depending on the results of Climb checks. Thus he might hit them if he goes down under the gentle auspices of gravity. Hitting them would probably cause damage to both him and the ladderites and definitely risk their purchase on said ladder. Collisions would also increase the DC of Yridhrennor's reflex save to time his scale activation correctly.

All that cool?

I am as well, I'm waiting for everyone else to post so hopefully I can figure it out.

Gay Male Inhuman

Ok. Sorry for the confusion.

Situation is we have a 40 foot vertical shaft in the ground with a ladder on one side. It's dark at the bottom.

Yridhrennor sent his familiar down to take a loot. Fal has low-light vision, but the room at the bottom is big and dark so Fal dodn't see much. On descent, Fal was noticed by unknown badguys with crossbows and got shot nearly to death. Everyone up above could hear the shots (They're kind of loud and the shaft is prone to echoes. plus any squawks of pain that Fal made.

I was not 100% on whether the party would respond to that with a general pile down the shaft, or if Falfaeren would return (as he had the initiative to do before another round of shots went off) and the party would hold position and discuss options or whatever. I didn't want to prejudge that decision, so I didn't roll a general initiative at the time.

Then it appeared that everyone very much decided it was best to descend the shaft. I took that as good cause to roll initiative. Technically I could have just thrown everyone in on top as new combatants but everyone save Fal had not engaged with the foes, nor the foes with them, so it felt weird to me to stack the whole party up like that.

Yridhrennor wanted to take a plunge down the shaft with his levitate scale, but also wanted to wait until a later initiative count to do so. That would have put Y, Theran, and Steave all in the shaft at the same time and a gravity-assisted elf descent in close quarters ran the risk of hitting them on the way down which could have led to a hilarious three-PC pileup on the ground but also probably would not have been as funny to the player as as to me. Also I hadn't stated that risk since I didn't anticipate the situation. So it only seemed fair to ask about it.

Does that clear things up?

M Half Elf Warpriest 7/Fighter(Dervish of Dawn)7 (HP 97/97| AC:23 | T:18 | FF:16 | CMB: 8| CMD:25 | Fort:+9 | Ref:+11 | Will:+11 | Init:+7| Perc:+15 | Speed 60)

Awesome, now I got it, thanks.

Gay Male Inhuman

Perhaps I can manage this post with better spelling.

Yridhrennor waited on his familiar's return and for those more capable of armed battle to join the fray. Falfaeren flew to his shoulder moments later. Theran and Steave just the armsmen Yridhrennor had in mind, started down the ladder at the best speed they could make short of leaving gravity do its work.

Moving with uncanny speed, the last of Clan Silverlight descends the entire forty foot distance and comes out on the bottom without the slightest risk of losing his perch as he went. He came into almost utter blackness.

Theran has shadowy illumination for the revealed squares, but nothing beyond that. It took a full-round action to get all the way down, so no casting yet.

Steave followed more cautiously, but even still found himself struggling to manage his weapons and his grip at once.

Crossbows sounded in the dark again, twice as many as sought Falfaeren's blood. A quarrel stuck in Theran's arm and a second nearly found his heart, but the spirits warned him just in time to spare himself the worst. Still the two bolts left him in a bad way, blood flowing freely.

Theran is at 2 hp.

Rules Stuff:

The ladder is DC 5, which I ought to have shared. The penalty for accelerated climbing is -5, so effective 10. That doesn't matter for Theran's roll at all. It would for Steave's, so I'll give him the lesser progress rather than nothing at all.

Badguy attacks

Galin joined Steave on the ladder, quickly moving past the paladin with the help of a rough spot on the wall nearby. He made it most of the way to the ground.

Saito moved forward more cautiously, incanting a spell that brought forth orbs of light and bidding them descend. They revealed the entire chamber to Theran. Water glistened on the walls and collected in a depression in the floor. Two barricades much like those above blocked the wall's far end and two mongrels attended each, crossbows drawn back to reload.

His light and armsmen arrived, more or less, Yridhrennor calls on the power of Terendelev's scale and descends the shaft on a white cloud that fades as he lands.

Abelard made his own go at the ladder, only to lose his grip on the ladder a moment later and plunge down to a painful landing on the ground that left him barely conscious.

Abelard is at exactly 0 hp

Rules Stuff:

Galin descends 30 feet.

Saito's lights are good enough to reveal the room. That trips Yridhrennor's delay. He acts here and uses the scale to descend safely.

Abelard falls. That's not so great.

He looks around for the loot bag in case a potion of healing is left, as his shoulder still bothers him greatly and he should probably get it in working order before he joins combat.

Saito picks up a potion and brings it to his lips, about to drink, when he realizes something.

"Hey you guys don't mind if I drink one of the healing potions do you?"

Sounds of violence come from below as he waits patiently for an answer, he then shrugs and drinks it.

Steave is still clinging near the top of the ladder. Abelard (who is at 0 hp) and Yridhrennor are down on the lower level with Theran right now. Sorry the map's ambiguous. Saito also sent dancing lights down that illuminated the chamber. You can still cast if you want, but you can already see the bad guys.

Forgot to say that Steave is at 0 hp. Bad GM. No horrifyingly racist 19th century primary sources for you today.

Galin stepped forward and struck, but the mongrel he chose parried his blade well short of its doing true harm. The weight of cudgel prevailed, this time, over skill with blade.

Saito is next. Order is Theran, Steave, Badguys, Galin, Saito, Yridhrennor, Abelard.

Steave didn't actually charge, because I never added the +2 to his attack. If he had charged, he would have hit. Without the charge AC penalty, I don't think Steave took damage.

Right you are. My mistake. He's back up to 9 hp.

When did Steave take 3 hp of damage? I want to keep his profile updated.

Looks like I probably forgot to update his hp after he got burned by the demon acid in the very first fight. That or it's from one of those rolls that got mangled when I lost a mostly-done post. I've put him back up to full now.

It's a valiant bleeding. People will sing songs. :)

Abelard stands up (absentmindedly retrieving his falchion in the process) to see what all the fuss is about. "Dear Lady Reymenda: please fix me up so I can go kick the everlivin' crap outta these tools of evil and look after them that I'm responsible for."

It's not the most eloquent of prayers, but it's fervent, and it's heartfelt. Seems to do the trick.

Going to try doing end of round recaps. Let me know if they're helpful, distracting, how they could be better, how they summon a many-angled horror to your computer for a little light spooning, etc. There may be a few continuity bloopers, but I think I have this mostly right. Yridhrennor's and Abelard's resolutions will come at the end because it would be silly to do a separate post for them and then immediately repeat its content.

Round I-Don't-Know Recap
Enraged, Theran cursed the cultits for cowards and swung wildly at them. His imprecations, however deserved, delayed his swing just long enough for the cultist he chose to bless with it to step back inches out of reach.

Steave rushed to Theran's side, kicking one of the mongrels hard through the barricade.

A 17 is clearly a hit. Not sure why I had it down as a miss before. Nonlethal damage is applied now. Sorry.

Two mongrel cultists pressed Theran. His skill and the guidance of Clan Silverlight preserved the barbarian through one attack, but its fury demanded his full attention and left him vulnerable to the next, which cracked his head and sent him sprawling to the ground, bleeding freely.

The others two turned to meet Steave's advance, but the crusader skillfully interposed his shield to block each blow.

Galin joined the general advance on the barricades, bringing his slim blade into play. The same lightness that made it ideal for his fighting style proved a hindrance when the mongrel he attacked caught the steel on his club and parried the blow.

Up above, Saito remained wary. With him, Anevia looked constantly at the doors. Horgus pretended to ignore the entire fray, but every time a blow landed he visibly suppressed a flinch. Teofil looked blindly about, repeatedly poising his hands as though to cast and then letting them drop. None save Horgus could have managed a swift descent to help and the merchant looked hardly fit for battle if he did.

Yridhrennor loaded his crossbow and sent another bolt flying, grazing the mongrel that Steave had kicked.

In a bad way, Abelard made an informal but deeply sincere prayer. Raymenda answered, mending all his wounds.

End of whatever round this is. I'll do Theran's stabilization separately so I can spot the transition better next time around.

Order is Theran, Steave, Badguys, Galin, Saito, Yridhrennor, Abelard.
