Sarenith: Rory could hardly believe it had already been six months since they first founded their little city and it had already grown so much. The stag lord's fortress had become their castle, homes had been constructed for the masses as well as a smithy to aid in the construction. Not only that, but Rory built his theater, Adular built his temple, Eldric built his inn, and Riva built her library. They were following their dreams here. He had watched his friends grow along with the city as well. Riva had adopted a young kobold as her daughter and Adular had taken on a half-orc acolyte. Both youths were in good hands and he would watch them grow as well. Yet as Rory labored with each day he watched his new goal grow, a hospital to aid the sick in his town. When the basic infirmary opened he aided in many of the townsfolk as best he and the others could. Yet he realized that in order to help the more serious cases, he'd need to build a proper work station. With this in mind he worked hard in his theater to accumulate the funds needed. He did his best to balance all his work in the theater with his work outside the theater with Selene. One night over dinner, he explained how thankful he was that she understood why he did all this work for the people.
Erastus: Having worked closely with Jhod, Archer's day was a complete success, despite some minor inconveniences to Rory. The rest of the month was spent gaining the capital and funds needed to begin construction on the workstation. With each day, however, Rory noticed more and more people needed the help of the small clinic. He knew that he needed to construct a second infirmary soon to meet the demand of those in need of aid. He looks back and remembered the cost of the first infirmary and sighed. He was in for a lot of work but smiled as Selene reassured him, he wasn't doing this alone this time.
My next post is about Archer's day specifically and should be fun to write. Feel free to add in what you guys did too if you want.
Rory Ward |
With Archer's Day upon the small town of Allania, Rory's theater was closed and instead was being used to host the traditional archery tournament. The seats were filled with people including Rory and Selene sitting in the front row, arms interlocked. Jhod walked on stage and addressed the seats.
"Welcome one and all to another Allania's first ever Archer's day celebration. Today we honor Erastil with our skills in archery as well in showing our ability to protect our families. Tonight we shall feast and dance and remember those who we love."
The cloud applauded Jhod. He waited for the noise to die down before continuing. "First we begin with the archery competition. Archers, if you would please meet me on the stage."
Some twenty people stood and headed towards the stage. Rory staid seated. "Why aren't you going?" Selene asked. "Because I'm their lord mayor. They'll let me win. Besides, i don't need to flirt anymore." Rory said before his mind had time to process the statement. Selene took back her arm and folded them across her chest. "If you know what's good for you, Lord Mayor, you'll get on that stage and compete. And if it'll ease you mind any," She said and stood up. She inhaled deeply and cupped her mouth before shouting, "ten gold pieces to any archer who can beat our fair Mayor." She sat back down and smiled at Rory. "I really don't like you sometimes." "I know," Selene said smugly. "you love me."
Rory stood and the auditorium cheered. Rory smiled and waved to the people as he made his way on stage with the other archers. There appeared to be nearly fifty other archers on stage, twice as many as there were before Selene's little announcement. Once every last archer was on stage, Jhod motioned them back stage while the competition was set up. There would be two groups competing for a spot in the final match up. Rory performed flawlessly in the early rounds gaining one victory after another. As the day dragged on other competitions began and the theater's attendance lessened. Rory's arms ached from the bow work, causing him a near loss on one instance. Yet by mid afternoon, Rory found himself in the last round of the competition.
Selene watched him from the front row. She wished him luck before blowing him a kiss. He smiled and stretched his arms. His opponent was a man a few years older than him and appeared to have a better build for archery than Rory did. When last shots began Rory was losing badly, not not bad enough to prevent a victory as a bulls eye would ensure it. While not too difficult, it was late in the day and Rory was tired from the long tournament. Still he drew his bow and aimed carefully. Said a pray to the stag god and released his arrow. Jhod announced the results and the crowed cheered. Rory was victorious.
At the feast the women competed in their own tournament. Rory sat in a wooden throne on a makeshift platform having been crowned King of Summer while a young boy sat to his left having been crowned prince. Rory watched as Selene now competed for his attention among other women. They sang traditional songs and danced with some of the other men. As Selene stood up to sing, Rory noticed a hint of magic in her words. Not very strong, but enough to captivate the audience. However, Rory was not the only one to notice the arcane energies floating on her sweet words and, accident or not, disqualified her from the competition. Selene spent the rest of the feat laughing from one of the tables as Rory dealt with a young red headed woman fawning over him.
After the feast all were free to sing and dance to their hearts content. After his traditional dance with the queen of summer, Rory made sure to take Selene's hand in dance before someone else had a chance. "There was magic in your singing. Was it on purpose? Rory said. Selene looked away. "No. I'm just bad at controlling it." "So you knew you could do it?" "Well... yeah. Arcane stuff just... it just doesn't seem right." She blushed when she looked up at Rory, remembering that he himself was an arcane caster. "Arcane magic is nothing to be ashamed of. Let me teach you how to better control it at least. Who knows, maybe you could become a famous bard like me one day as well." "Famous?" Selene said with a cocked eyebrow, "Don't get ahead of yourself now." She laughed and kissed Rory briefly. As midnight came the party ended. The day was over and the celebration was over, as to not make tomorrows work any worse.
Woo that was a lot. Selene is officially an bard apprentice and will be working alongside Rory in the theater giving lessons and such.

Sarenith
The two clerics, one a seasoned veteran of Gorum, and the other new to the church, stared at the endless piles of papers. Neither of them were merchants, and the older priest, indeed the high priest, rubbed his forehead.
"I hate math." Puthgus finally said, "But, High Priest, I think you maybe going..."
"Broke... I could be going broke. Well, not truly broke, but Gorum save me, I may not have enough coin to finish the arena, we'll see..." Adular shook his head, "These taxes are killing me. They cut a huge chunk of my profit... Ah, how I long for the time I could raid a dungeon, loot by right of conquest, and then pour gold into whatever I wanted."
"We could demand money from travelers!" Puthgus suggested with a fangy smile.
"I LOVE the idea, love it," Adular said, "Only problem is... that would be banditry, and the council would give me no end of hell about taking up the very trade we killed the stag lord for. They're FUNNY that way..."
The half orc's brows knit, "Ah, right. They seem awfully limited in their thinking."
"They just don't have the blessing of Gorum's wisdom, my boy. That's all. Well, time to focus on asking the populace for help...tithes, my lad, tithes and donations. And simple payment as well. The Dojo will be open to training to even non followers if they pay coin, and so on. Let's see if all that healing I've been doing has meant one damn thing to the people of this new nation." He rose slowly.
To his surprise, it did, maybe not a lot, again, Adular was no merchant, but coin began to pour into the coffers, mostly silver rather than gold, but it added up. The question was, would it be enough? Or would the arena's construction half to halt?
Adular gave lessons in the dojo, teaching peasants how to hold a blade. He healed, of course, but priority now went to worshipers first, and then those with coin. Most, it turned out, saw that as perfectly reasonable. Perhaps Adular's charity would renew sometime, but he simply couldn't afford it right now, and Gorum was a practical deity.
Riva Sarjenka |
Curious to know more about the culture of kobolds--the better to understand her daughter--Riva spends many hours doing research in her library.
I am going to make two knowledge checks for each of the following questions; the first being knowledge: local, as it applies to humanoids such as kobolds, and the second being knowledge: geography, which applies to people. I assume the first check will get me information on kobolds in general, and the latter will net me knowledge on the Sootscale tribe's culture specifically.
Though we've gone quite far, this is still a dangerous land. At some point I will need to expose her so she can learn to better fend for herself.
At what age is it generally considered acceptable for kobolds to face danger? That is, when in their lifetime do they go from being too young and in need of protection, to being sent out on hunting or raiding expeditions, or otherwise be placed in harm's way by their tribe?
local: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (12) + 17 = 29
geography: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16
She should be well-versed in kobold culture. I don't want her feeling apart from her own people just because she lives here at the library.
Are there any important cultural events in a kobold's life, such as a holiday, tradition, or test or trial to become an adult? If so, what are they?
local: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (13) + 17 = 30
geography: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
I am such a fool for falling in love with one so short-lived. Surely something can be done to extend our time together.
Who are the longest lived kobolds known to have existed? What may have contributed to their longer life spans?
local: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (4) + 17 = 21
geography: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
As with all small children, of any race, diet is important. I imagine kobolds eat a lot of meat, but what else do they like? I get the sense that a candy treat for an elfling will not go over as well with a kobold hatchling.
What do kobolds generally eat during all stages of their life? What is required for them to grow strong and healthy?
local: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (2) + 17 = 19
geography: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
In a scant few years, she will be of breeding age, and will be sought after by male kobolds. I will have to be ready for it, both to answer her questions as she grows and to ward off unsuitable suitors.
What are the general courtship and mating rituals of kobolds?
Frustrated that she still seems to be lacking answers, and constantly coming up with even more questions, Riva invites Sootscale over for dinner--and a crash course in the lives of kobolds.
Sootscale |
Though we've gone quite far, this is still a dangerous land. At some point I will need to expose her so she can learn to better fend for herself.
All Kobolds face danger. As far as they are conserved danger is unavoidable. However Kobolds also tend to be carful as well and children are usually expected to be able to decide what is worth risking by the time they are 1 year old.
She should be well-versed in kobold culture. I don't want her feeling apart from her own people just because she lives here at the library.
Are there any important cultural events in a kobold's life, such as a holiday, tradition, or test or trial to become an adult? If so, what are they?
The Soot-scales do not really stand on ceremony in most cases. Some other tribes do but they pride themselves on dealing with things as they are no how they should be. A Koblod is an adult when they have a child no ceremony needed.
Who are the longest lived kobolds known to have existed? What may have contributed to their longer life spans?
From your studies Koblod short lives might very well be from their environment. You can't find a single case of a Koblod dieing of old age. Of course their history in general only goes back as far that grandfathers grandfather. Anything before that is unreliable. The longest lived Kobold that you can find lived to the age of 25 and was named Tartuk. (The one you killed). However from your readings a lucky and careful Kobold might live to the ripe old age of 140.
What do kobolds generally eat during all stages of their life? What is required for them to grow strong and healthy?
The Soot-scales tend to eat about anything organic. It might not be healthy for them but far too many of them have seen others die of hunger or been hungery themselves to turn down anything that resembles food. This has become quite a problem some Koblod have literally gored themselves to death in the new kingdom. Unfortunately the Soot-scales might know the least about what a healthy diet for a kobold is. Your readings suggest Meat and Eggs are healthy but there has not been much research on the subject.
What are the general courtship and mating rituals of kobolds?
A mature Koblod female lays an egg every month as part of her monthly cycle. The mating ritual seem to follow a pattern of the females hiding the eggs and the males trying to find them. It's more complicated then that but mating rituals are always complicated.

Erastus, very early...
At Riva's door...
there is a loud knocking one after noon
"Treasurer? Are you in? I... well, this is humiliating," He grumbles to himself. Assuming she opens the door, the High Priest greets her with a nod, "Sorry to trouble you, Riva. I need some aid and it involves your official capacity."
Wasn't sure if you folks wanted me to RP the 'helmet in hand' situation for that BP, but figured I should at least leave it as an opening. If you worry it will slow things down too much or what have you, then no worries we can just assume it off panel.
Riva Sarjenka |
A short time later
"Do you realize how serious an impact such a sum could have on the kingdom's abilities to grow and expand? How people would react once they realize the shortage of food or the lack of road-building efforts is your doing? Good luck getting people to flock to your church then!"
"Nevertheless, I have heard of what you plan to do with the money, and though I think it a crude plan, I strongly suspect it will prove effective at...distracting the populace from the hardships they are sometimes forced to face. You humans were always so queer that way. Put on a good show and people forget their hungry--for a time."
"Taking such a drastic step can reflect badly not only on you, but on all the rulership of this fledgling kingdom. That is why we need a good plan for it. The least we can do is instill the populace with confidence that their rulers are at least spending the tax money wisely."
"Therefore, I am going to insist that you share your financial plan with me first before I draw up the appropriate papers." Or lack there of. "We need to make sure it is a solid investment, so as to minimize the fallback onto the people of Caerulus." But mostly to ourselves. "Well...what are you waiting for? Let me hear your proposal.
I've already deducted the BP, so don't worry about actually convincing Riva with your roleplay, that's done. Just have fun with it. FYI, a good plan to her sees immediate results--try to get it done by the end of Arodus.
Adular |
Adular scowls a bit, "I doubt I'm the only one who's had to rely on the treasury out of the group and the people want to help... the Church has already put word out on its need for aid and some are responding. I'm rather proud of them. I'm a war priest, not a merchant, but Yes , an arena will be a wonderful distraction for the people, but more than that, it will draw tourism, trade, and talent to this city," He touches one finger for each of the benefits, "We're talking about something that draws crowds, and crowds buy things not just at the building they were going to, but the ones along the way. That's shopkeepers, craftsmen, inns, and more. If it really takes off, we're talking warriors of repute in the area, and they're big draws just walking around. If they decide to 'retire' from gladiating, that's talent that might eventually serve our guard or milita, or at the least will make any would be invaders think twice about tearing through the area. Now I have a broach of shielding, apparently it protects from those 'pew pew' spells... if you want me to hand it over to the treasury to lessen the loss to it, I will though I was thinking of wearing it when I explored south in the next month or so in search of more resources for this young kingdom." He adds, "Come on, Riva. Don't make me stop all construction flat. Those laborers have families."
No worries. Adular is feeling bad about this and likely won't be doing it again if he can possibly help it :)
Riva Sarjenka |
Meant to post this here, but it got placed in the discussion thread instead. Check here for my dice rolls to learn about the local fauna.
Excited to be out under the sun, Riva buys a pair of rowboats (complete with oars), each outfitted with two fishing kits, a fishing net, and a harpoon.
"Let's go fishing! It seems such a shame to let the bay go to waist."
I'm exploring H36 with any volunteers who wish to join.
Riva Sarjenka |
Adular looks a bit nervous, "By boat no less...armor sinks, you know?" However he did offer to help explore in part to raise revenue, and a deal is a deal.
"We're going fishing, not to war. Leave your armor at home, or wear something lighter if you must. Besides, these are sturdy boats." I should know, I paid good coin for them. "You act like you will run into the 'swamp witch' the common folk speak of or something--and even if you did, your armor would do you little good against being turned into a toad, so don't worry so much about it."
You can also take your armor and just not wear it while we are over water.
Adular |
Adular accepts the pat on the back as being reassuring in its intent, though he still would rather be on land.
When Rory speaks about Selene, he smiles a bit, "How are things going with Selene, by the way, Rory?" The cleric isn't blind, "You two have been in each other's company a lot in public."
Riva Sarjenka |
"Perhaps we should invite her along too," declares Riva with a smirk. "What are we waiting for, let's go! I'm to meet the farmer Hendrick at the shore about those boats. If we miss him we might be swimming instead of fishing." She shoves Eldric towards the door good naturedly.
Adular |
"uh huh..." Adular fights a smile but lets it slide respecting Rory's privacy for now, "You must be very proud."
"Perhaps we should invite her along too," declares Riva with a smirk. "What are we waiting for, let's go! I'm to meet the farmer Hendrick at the shore about those boats. If we miss him we might be swimming instead of fishing." She shoves Eldric towards the door good naturedly.
"Hendrick? I don't think I've seen him at services. I suppose he's an Erastilian, which makes sense giving his profession..." Adular follows the elf, "Speaking of apprentices, hows yours doing?"
Rory Ward |
Rory thought about the five of them on a boat together and thought against it. "Some time apart will be good for the two of us. First we worked together, then we started dating, and now I'm also teaching her the finer arts of bardic learning. Time apart will be very good," Rory said with a sigh at the end.
Riva Sarjenka |
"Speaking of apprentices, hows yours doing?"
"The Little One is doing quite well for herself. She has proven to be quite resourceful at finding things she wants when she wants them. The staff absolutely adores her. I fear she may grow spoiled in time. I'll have to see that, that does not happen."
Riva Sarjenka |
Riva whirls on Rory in near fury, her voice quickly escalating to a fevered pitch. "Kobolds grow quickly, Rory, or have you forgotten!? The last thing she needs is to be soft in the River Lands!"
Yelling now, Riva continues, "I may not be able to protect her from aging, or dying like Allania, but I damn well can teach her to protect herself from everything else!"
Riva, on the verge of crying now, realizes the harsh truth of her own words, but rather than reveal any more of her fears to her friends, she merely turns away.
In a cold voice, she murmurs, "We need to go. We're going to be late." She then storms off to the beach in a dignified march, too embarrassed to continue the conversation or to let her companions offer comfort.
Riva Sarjenka |
About an hour later, Riva has paid for the boats and fishing gear and is pushing off the shore with Eldric--Rory and Adular being in the other boat.
The plan is to lap the Tuskwater and return, taking note of our findings, and hopefully having a good time (if only to forget). (Exploring hexes H36 and H38.)
Powergaming DM |
As you go around the the lake you find a small swamp on the southeast bank of the Tusk water. You can see a dilapidated mud-brick hut squats atop a small hummock in the middle of the fetid marsh, a thin tendril of bluish smoke trickling through a gaping hole in its moss- covered roof. A wooden fence surrounding the perimeter of the mound is festooned with crude fetishes crafted out of sticks, feathers, and animal bones. A lone crow caws noisily from the top of a nearby cypress tree.
Riva Sarjenka |
Rowing quietly to the shore at the edge of the marsh, Riva lets the image of the strange little hut sink in, mentally trying to siphon more information from what she can see, smell, hear, and remember.

Knowledge (arcana): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20
Are there any recognizable signs of spellcasters having been in the area? (Riva also casts detect magic.)

How far away from the shore is the hut? The hex map seems to indicate that the border marsh doesn't start for until at least 2 hexes inland.
As she steps out of the boat, as if in a curiosity driven trance. Riva quietly asks, "I think we may have found the Old Beldame. Perhaps we should say hello? She might know of the all the best fishing spots."
Despite her confident tone, Riva does not move ahead of her companions.
Powergaming DM |
You see a scarecrow is obviously animate.
You see not signs that there might be a basement.
You see no weak points in the hunt's construction.
There is a bell on the fence for you to ring.
There is some talk about how there used to be fey lords, but they might be myths.
Some people do apparently do come to for magical help they tend to regret it she does not like visitors.
No natural hazards.
If you all got turned into toads the kingdom would have deal with the vacancy penalty unless you got back and managed to convince everyone who you were. Toad ruling the kingdom might be a hard sell.
The fetishes seem to be Gremlin religious totems however it is likely they are just for show.
There is a bell on the gate.
Riva Sarjenka |
Riva casts mage armor on the armorless Adular, then rings the bell and calls out.
"Hello...? Is anyone home? We were out fishing and we wanted to ask for directions."
Riva tells her companions to be wary of the animated scarecrow, "Such a construct may well serve as a guard dog as well as a servant--and is a sure sign that a powerful spellcaster lives here. BE. POLITE."
Riva holds her fishing pole across her right shoulder to emphasize the truth of her story, and to fend off any threats should they present themselves.
Riva does not open the gate nor does she step onto the property. Instead, she waits patiently for a response from the local resident(s). As a matter of precaution, she discreetly casts a silent shield spell while she waits, making sure to keep her somatic components hidden below the fence line (so as to not offend or alarm).
Riva Sarjenka |
As soon as you ring the bell you hear a shrieking voice say
"No No No for the last time I do not do love potions"
Is the voice male or female? Rive addresses the proper sex.
"Uh...we're not here for...love potions...not unless you have any that attract fish that is... You see, we're new to the area, and just wanted to ask you about the best watering holes, and the region in general. We'd be happy to make it worth your while, Mr./Mrs. er...to whom am I addressing?"
Are there any magical auras in the area, is so what power level and at what location(s)?
Knowledge (arcana) to learn more about the scarecrow construct: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30
Adular |
Actually, Adular was still wearing armor..sorry I wasn't clearer. That's why he mentioned 'religious obligations' and he meant he'd chance sinking like a stone. I should have been specific
Adular noted Riva's terse response about the apprentice aging, Ah, she has a softer side after all. Must be hell watching folks wither , it's a kind of courage that she took on the kobold at all. While he might always LIKE Riva, he finds he respects her in ways he never expected to.
Then they approach the witch's hut, and the bell is rung. He listens to the warning, and the chatter and decides to keep his yap shut for the moment, looking to Rory should they need some likability for this.

Riva turns to leave, heading back to the rowboat, beckoning the others to follow.

While the party was distracted with the occupant of the hut and her animated scarecrow, a barghest managed to creep up by one of the rowboats. Just as Riva was about to get in, it pounced from the cover of the boat, clamping its vicious jaws down around her arm. If she hadn't been carrying the fishing pole, the beast may have dealt serious damage to her arm. Fortunately for her, the fishing rod caught in its teeth, absorbing much of the damage itself.
Riva yelps in surprise and jumps back, already beginning to cast a potent spell, which would strip the beast of its sight.
On Riva's turn, she will 5-foot step back and attempt to cast blindness on the beast. DC 17 negates.
If someone else pushes her out of harm's way, she will use her move action to get even more distance between her and this new threat.
