Sanctuary

Turbulent waters and forbidding, trackless forests separate the Lonely Coast from the gaudy lights of civilisation. Pirates and slavers ply the storm‐tossed waters while goblins and other foul things creep through the gloom of the Tangled Wood that chokes the forgotten holds and sacred places of the Old People.
Deep within the forest, a narrow, rock‐choked defile piled deep with shadow cuts through a nameless range of rugged, tree
shrouded hills birthing dark, fearsome legends of terrifying monsters and glittering, doom‐laden treasures.

A grey and cold Dawn greets you today. You are in the the small village of swallowfeld, the closest settlement to your ultimate destination, the priory of Cimer.

Few people go there, especially this time of year. But you all have heard about other travellers that want to go there too, and travelling alone is never a wise choice in a mostly untamed land like the Lonely coast.

So here you are, five people gathered by chance around a fire in the living hall of a small inn.

Felixus is very glad to see that there is another follower of Darlen, a paladin no less. This is very good news, Felixus had been worried that he might have to travel without any martially able fellows up to the priory. Or worse, travel with brigands who would turn and rob their fellow travelers. Moving up to her he offers her an ink stained palm. " A pleasure to make your acquaintance. " He says. " It is delightful to see another professed to Darlen. Is this your first time making the trip to Cimer?"

Tamarie reaches out to accept Felixus hand and smiles, "The pleasure is all mine. If nothing else we will always have at least one thing to talk about," she giggles. "First time making the trip without my family. We made the trip 4 other times in my life, but I have come for more personal reasons this time. I'm hoping to speak with Ruan, he knows more about the Noble One than anyone I've ever met."

The first thing that grabs your attention at seeing this 6'0 muscular (190 lbs) Darlen soldier is not the fancy tabard with his holy symbol showing big on its front and back, nor the wooden holy symbol hanging from it.
The first thing you notice is the fiery red birthmark showing in his neck, almost reaching his jaw, that at first sight looks like a wound or skin disease. A red birthmark that if examined carefully, without the clothes that partially cover it, revels itself as very similar to the Darlen's holy symbol.
he bows before you two.
"Sister, Brother, May Darlen bless us all. I am glad we will accompany each other in this pilgrimage to the priori. May name is Jal Hetzau, and I am at your service, and Darlen's."

Male Human Bard (1) | HP9/9 | AC14 T12 FF12 | F+1 R+4 W+3 | CMB +0 CMD +12 | Init +1 Per +5 |

Felixus tilts his head so his eyes are level with the red birthmark as he examines it. As he does so he raises one hand and sketches with it in the air, as if he is tracing the holy and venerable symbol.

Brother, it is good to meet you he intones in his dry voice as he bows back to Jal. It is a short, almost perfunctory bow perfected by years of duplicating the action many times every day. I have not heard of a brother so blessed by Darlen. What other portents have been visited upon you?

His tone is entirely serious, as if discussing the effect of bad weather upon the harvest.

A tall man with strange, fey eyes rose from the corner where he sat with a striking woman. He was dressed in a simple tunic but bore an amulet in the shape of a sword - the symbol of Iomedae.

"Peace be upon all of good will," he said to those assembled. "I am Agramayne, a servant of the Inheritor. If you travel to Cimer, it would be wise to travel in strength. May we join you?"

She had listened as the others made customary greeting. Dressed for the cold, with a prominent iron Iomedaean amulet hanging from her neck, she mutely watched as her particular companion stood, drawing nearer to the people idling by the fire and made his own introduction. The striking woman possessed fierce amber eyes - the firelight having illuminated the threads of gold within them.

Her full-bodied, throaty voice carried in the space of the hall.

"Greetings, fellow travellers. I am Achlys Dess, also servant of the Inheritor. Indeed, it is as my fine companion here speaks, we seek to travel with company."

Achlys walked up to Agramayne and focused her gaze upon each unfamiliar traveller. The other Half-Elven female drew her momentary attention and the inquisitor inclined her head in due courtesy. One with hair like fire, another with mark like fire. Interesting.

"You have been touched by your god, Jal Hetzau." A small smile played along her lips.

She held her hands out toward the flickering flames to warm them, occasionally gazing at the small congregation and the interior of the hall.

"Company is indeed prized, and where one may collapse three will carry on " Felixus says quoting an obscure line from one of Darlen's religious tomes.

" I see you are both part elven, and both servants of the Inheritor, are you related? Either by blood or love? You seem very familiar with one another for travelers on the road"

Achlys tilted her head upon utterance of the phrase. "Indeed, Felixus."

Her amber gaze moved from the Darlen supplicant to her own travelling companion, Agramayne.

A cool smile graced her lips before she spoke.

"We are joined by the righteous light and sword. Our Order sent us forth, together. As they have in the past. We are known to each other." Her voice remained steady and strong as she answered plainly.

"May I ask what is the purpose of your journey, Felixus? The pilgrimage is not to be taken lightly in the cold season."

Jal answers quoting Darlen's scripture too:

"Darlen everyday brings us light in the morning, joy during the day, beauty at dusk and rest in the night." - a phrase that represents not only a day, but also a life's complete cycle. And then he continues, not quoting anymore - "So far the Justicar has also granted me strength in my hand and courage in my heart. And I thank him for that."
To the Iomedaians he bows to.
"It would be an honor to share the path with followers of the Inheritor."

His tone is deadpan as he wonders if the cool smile indicated their was more to Archyls answer, or if one of them merely wanted there to be.

Achlys's gaze and attention turned back to fighter. She politely inclined her head in response to his bow.

"We shall rely upon one another on the journey to the Priory. The honour is ours, as well."

Sweeping her gaze across the collective, she announced plainly, "Preparations must be finalised. If any of you do not possess warmer clothing, I suggest you make purchase of some. And any article to aid through snow and ice."

As another thought entered her mind, she added to the assembled group, "What weapons do you wield with some certainty? I prefer the sword and being in close quarter with my quarry", casually brushing her hand against the sheathed bastard sword at her side.

I was forgetting something, you are allowed to a knowledge religion check to know some things about the priory

Kn religion (or local) DC 10:
The Priory of Cymer is a small, backwater shrine
named after a local saint. The priory was founded at the behest
of Cymer (a visionary believer) who foresaw a great evil would
arise at the site. It never did and over the last few decades, the
place has fallen out of favour with the populace of the nearby
villages; now few worship there.

Religion DC 15:
The curate at Cymer was once a member of an
extreme sect – The Brotherhood of the Unalterable Way.
Depending on whom you talk to within the clergy, becoming
curate of Cymer was either a reward for leaving the sect or a
punishment for not doing so sooner!

Religion DC 15:
The Brotherhood of the Unalterable Way is an ultra
orthodox sect of Darlenites famed for their unbending view of
holy scripture and their practise of self‐flagellation which they
believe literally scourges sin from the body.

Religion DC 25:
The priory is rumoured to be built above a network
of caves; stonemasons sealed the caverns because they feared
what might creep forth.

Tammarie automatically knows the DC 10 information.

Dark, ominous clouds hang low in the sky behind you and a
strong, chill wind plucks at your cloaks. The muddy streets of

and miserable.

Just around a corner of the trail Tammarie and Achlyss see that several fallen trees block the path (like 70 ft ahead of you).

Achlys was glad for her waterproof poncho worn over her woollen attire because the wind and the sleet pushed against her for hours.

Lifting her face and eyes and spying the fallen trees up ahead, Achlys pointed them out to Agramayne and the others. Tamarie gestured for all to be silent (for she had seen it, too) and instructed Felixus to move forward to investigate the situation. With his earlier remark about staying on the sidelines and not wanting to get a dagger in his ribs, Achlys wondered how he felt being asked to put himself directly in the path of possible danger.

Remaining watchful, she removed the small, metal shield from her back and strapped it to her left/off arm, drew her bastard sword (holding it in her true hand) and then crept quietly and slowly forward, hoping the wind would obscure some of the sound of her footfall until she came to a stop. She could not allow the bard to be left on his own so far forward from the group without a swordsman near to him. Sorry, Jal, not sure how close you are to Felixus at the moment.
