Huh, they speak the language. Handy that.

Cervin scowls as a good shot bounces off of the insect's hide. He nocks two more arrows. The first goes wide and he takes a moment to carefully aim the second before firing it off.

Seeing the giant insect make short work of the two men, Yagello pauses for a second.

This beast is a true harbinger of nature's fury! Look what it just did to those two men! Cervin may have the right idea attacking it with his arrows and staying out of its reach. Curses that I left Igmar's acid and fire flasks back in Nevinia's wagon!

Still cursing to himself, he shrugs his shoulders and continues to move cautiously towards the insect. Unable to communicate with the Irrisani, he makes hand motions indicating he would like to work with them to flank the beast.

Finally stopping 10 feet away from the creature, he begins waving his blade and yelling menacingly in its direction. He hopes to scare it away, but unfortunately his yells are frequently interposed with fits of coughing.

Move action to G-15
Standard action to attempt to demoralize the beast, if possible

Arkady - yes, that path is still difficult terrain.

Nevinia's hex does nothing to the creature, and the witch realizes that this insect must not have much of a mind to control, mostly eating out of necessity. The green carapace looks out of place among the snow and ice of Irrisen. Perhaps this grasshopper or mantis wandered through the portal from Taldor?

The remaining strangers fan out, cautiously trying to move around the beast to contain it, but giving a wide berth to stay out of reach.

The others take double move actions to move into flanking positions.

Another of Cervin's arrows hits, hitting one of the mandibles, just missing the opening the the mouth. The creature rears slightly, and seeing Yagello making threatening gestures, lunges outwards with its claws to grab the ranger.

Insect lunges towards Yagello.

Claw: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11Grab: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21

Yagello feels himself being lifted off the ground, and pulled towards the insect's mandibles. Yagello can see one of Cervin's arrows still jutting out of one side of the head.

Yagello is being grappled by the insect, and was dragged to E15. The insect appears to have taken 14 damage across two of Cervin's arrows. The map has been updated, and everyone can take their round four actions.

Seeing an opportunity to attack the insect while it is distracted, the strangers flank the insect to try and free Yagello.

Handaxe from C13 (flanking): 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 3 + 2 = 15
Handaxe from C16 (flanking): 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 3 + 2 = 24Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

The third stranger remaining raises an axe and a pick, and gets ready to attack with both, getting in a quick slice with an axe first.

Handaxe from D13 (flanking): 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 5 + 2 = 20Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

The last stranger's hood flies off in the commotion, revealing a lone woman traveling with the group.

The insect has now appeared to have taken 23 damage.

This is not exactly what I wanted to see when I returned from work and jumped on these messageboards...

Yagello reels from the insect's sharp claw attack and feels blood dripping freely from his midsection. He struggles against the creature's vice-like grip, trying to break its hold on him.

CMB check to break grapple: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

The creature avoids the ranges assault of Arkady, Nevinia and Cervin but reacts to the axes from the Ulfen on either side. It drops Yagello, and tries to attack those with axes

Creature uses a free action to drop Yagello, takes a full round action to attack Ulfen at C16 and D13.

Another Ulfen man is felled by the insect's sharp claws, and the two remaining Ulfen cry out in a panic. The dogs begin to bark frenziedly as they smell the blood and danger in the air.

Everyone can take round 5 actions. Yagello is prone and will likely provoke an attack of opportunity if he moves or gets up. The remaining Ulfen are delaying until Cervin, Nevinia and Arkady have a chance to attack.

Nevinia looks at the dogs in front of her, shakes her head, and says, "No, I can't fight this way..."

She draws her dagger, the cold iron black against the white snow, pushes herself over to the dogs' harness [ooc]I17[/i], and frees the dogs, cutting the harness if necessary.

The man and the women, the only two remaining companions standing, frantically hack at the insect to try and bring it down.

Both full-attack the insect.

Handaxe from D13: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Light pick from D13: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

The dogs race towards the giant insect, which swats at the first one as it approaches.

Dogs at I15 and I16 charge the insect, with the first one provoking an attack of opportunity.

Claw AoO: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

The insect swats the first dog away handily, and it hits the ground with a thud, lifeless, but the other dog chases quickly on its heels and snaps at one of the legs.

Dog at E16 bites (charging): 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 + 2 = 19Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

The dog gets a bite in, and the insect has to move slightly to get to the canine snapping at the insect's feet.

The insect appears to have taken 26 damage. Yagello can still take his round 5 action, and everyone else can take their round 6 actions while the insect delays.

With the insect momentarily distracted by the charging dogs, Yagello finally see his opening. He rises back up to his feet and thrusts his sword hard at the creature's underbelly. Though still quite sick, Arkady's magic invigorates him and makes him forget about the chillbane for a moment.

I praying the giant mantis doesn't have combat reflexes and used his lone attack of opportunity on one of the dogs!

Round 5 Actions
Move action to rise from prone position
Standard action to attack the giant mantis

Attack (elven curve blade): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
If successful, damage: 1d10 - 1 ⇒ (10) - 1 = 9

Missing initially, he swings away again determined to bring this threat down.

Round 6 Actions w/Arkady's Diviner's Fortune

Attack (elven curve blade): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
If successful, damage: 1d10 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5

Cervin's arrows go wide, and Yagello's blade fails to penetrate the insects tough skin. The insect focuses on the dog first.

Full attacking, starting with the dog at E16 who hurt the insect last.

Claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

The dog falls quickly under the huge insect's weight. The insect turns to the side, attacking the male Ulfen wielding his axe next.

Claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

The insect cuts a bloody gash across the man, and he falls with his comrades at the insect's feet.

Map has been updated. Nevinia and the Ulfen woman can still take round 6 actions. Currently 4 Ulfen and 2 dogs are unconscious or dying.

Female Female human (Ulfen) ranger 3 (AC 15 HP 22/24 Init +2 Per +5) Ranger 3

"Birgir!," the Ulfen woman exclaims before quickly turning back to the insect to attack, "Jeg vil dø før jeg la deg slippe unna, grønt monster!"

Skald:
"Birgir! I will die before I let you escape, green monster!"

Full attack.

Handaxe from D13: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Light pick from D13: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

The insect turns to regard the woman as the axe bites in, obviously seeing her as an immediate threat.

The insect lunges with its claws to attack the woman. The successive arrows, cuts and bites appear to be slowly wearing down the insect.

Full attack in return!

Claw to D13: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Claw to D13: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Sweat freely flows down Yagello's face, and he feels feverish and drained to his bones. Breathing heavily, he tries to summon whatever energy he has left and swings his blade once more at the giant mantis.

Power Attack (elven curve blade): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
If successful, damage: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

Boy, being sickened and fatigued at the same time is no laughing matter! It's basically made me completely ineffective at melee combat! :(

Quick question regarding my last 3 attacks though. Are Nadya and I flanking the mantis? It might be too late to change my rolls, but if we are, my adjusted attacks rolls would have been 15,18, and 17. (Crossing fingers), does it make a difference?

Male Human (Varisian) Rogue 1/Wizard 1 Status: AC 11, 7/13 hit points

Sadly, flanking requires you to be on non-adjacent sides of the enemy. Ordinarily, a 5' step or two would fix the problem, but the difficult terrain nixes that. :(

Arkady nods at Nevinia. "Tsuritsa, see if you can help release those dogs!" He moves slightly, risking an attack from the monster to get his familiar closer to the sleds.

Using the human's body to shield her movement, the ermine wriggles free of her warm spot in the scarf and runs through the snow to the dogs. Using her teeth and claws, she attempts to free the dogs from their harness.

Arkady turns his attention back to the beast. Waving his hands across his body, he says, "M-am armura!" For a moment, his body appears as if covered with armor, then the image fades.

Move action to F14, provoking an AoO from the insect. After the AoO, cast mage armor. Tsuritsa moves to H11 and attempts a check to get the dog out of its harness; if the check is Escape Artist the bonus is +7, if Disable Device the bonus is +5.

Escape Artist or Disable Device: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 Additional +2 if Escape Artist

EDIT: Why do the dice gods hate me so?

Yagello, it wouldn't have made a difference anyways.

Tsuritsa is unable to free the dogs, but two pairs are freed by Cervin and Nevinia, and they charge towards the insect fearlessly, barking as they charge.

Only two of the dogs can make it close enough to attack this round. One of them is attacked by the insect with an attack of opportunity first.

Claw AoO against one of the dogs: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Dog at E14 bites (charging): 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 + 2 = 22Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Handaxe from D13: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Light pick from D13: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

She curses in Skald as she fumbles with her weapons, failing to capitalize on the opportunity.

The insect meanwhile attacks the dogs, trying to clear a path as quickly as possible.

Claw to E13: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Claw to E13: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

The insect flails poorly, as the small dogs duck beneath the swipes of the claws. The creature appears to be missing more, perhaps due to the cumulative effects of the various injuries.

Wow, now I'm rolling poorly as well! The map is updated. Nevinia can take round 7 and 8 actions, and everyone can also take round 8 actions.

The dogs freed by Nevinia reach the insect just as one of arrows hit the head of the insect. With a loud series of clicks, the insect finally reels backwards and collapses in a heap, as the freed dogs alternate between pawing and biting at the remains.

Seeing the giant mantis fall, Yagello breathes a sigh of relief and collapses to his knees. "Good shot, Cervin." he whispers before slamming his own blade into the ground out of frustration.

He surveys the carnage around him, hoping Nevinia is able to save as many lives as possible. He brings a waterskin to his lips and drinks hurriedly, suddenly aware of his great thirst. He turns to the woman on the ground beside him and offers her a drink as well. "I am Yagello of Taldor. Did you suffer any injures in battle?"

Other than from his companions, Arkady only detects two faint auras coming from the Ulfen woman. Nevinia heals all of the men and dogs, and while all of the dogs get up, one of the men remains unconscious even after the healing.

Nevinia, the recipient of the 3 healing is stable but still below 0 HP and unconscious. You can either expend additional healing, or allow natural healing to take place.

Arkady, you will need to either ask the woman to examine her gear, or come up with a ruse if you want to identify it without letting her know.

Female Female human (Ulfen) ranger 3 (AC 15 HP 22/24 Init +2 Per +5) Ranger 3

The woman takes the waterskin and takes a sip, before speaking in passable common.

"I am Nadya Petska, of Waldsby. It is near here. I am good, but Birgir and others do not appear as well. Your friend is healer? For Erastil, maybe?" She regards Nevinia for a moment and then changes the subject before Yagello can reply. "No matter. We would be dead without you, so you are friends now. You are far from Taldoor," she pronounces the land with extra emphasis on the last syllable, as if it is the first time she has heard the name of a foreign land, "So you must not know things of Irrisen."

She gets up to check on her party as they recover from Nevinia's healing, and continue to talk to the rest of the party. "This is White Witch territory, and they do not like outsiders. But you helped us with green monster, so you are friends with Nadya. I will take you to Waldsby, there you can be proper for weather." Nadya looks at Arkady in particular as she says this.

The wind surges briefly, and Nadya looks up at the sky. "Storm is coming. We will not make it to Waldsby before snow starts. It is important to camp before it becomes too dangerous." Nadya gives some instructions in Skald, as the other Ulfen men clearly do not understand common. She and her companions move quickly with purpose, re-attaching the dogs to their sleds and ensuring that their gear is still securely fastened. Nadya addressed the group from Taldor in common. He stands, feels dizzy for a moment, and then steadies himself on a snow drift. He coughs violently and grunts in discomfort as pain travels up and down his injured side. Through his coughing fit, he studies Nadya carefully, trying to discern her capabilities and background.

Nevinia helps the last man get up, and Nadya relays Nevinia and Cervin's suggestions to her men. They scramble up the slope to help with the party's gear, and a guffaw or two can be heard over the hill as they regard the wagon stuck in the snow.

Nevinia takes a concerned look at Yagello as he coughs. "You are sick. We will help make you better tonight at camp." She stands only 5-1/2 feet tall, and looks to be not much more than 25 years old. She wears her vibrant red hair in three braids, two short braids framing her pale face, and a third, longer braid hanging down her back. Her slight build belies the inner strength with which she draws her favorite longbow and weathers the harsh conditions of Irrisen’s wilds, obviously thriving. She looks over to Arkady, "You are sick as well. You two must stay together tonight, separate from others, so not to spread sickness."

Looking around and pondering the situation, she thinks a moment and replies, "Cervin, I think you and Arkady should go with the team to the camp directly. Arkady, get rest and stay warm. Yagello, you know your way around animals, yes? I might need help getting Prasha and Dasha to cooperate when they aren't hitched to the wagon, I could use your assistance."

Turning back to Nadya, she adds, "Nadya, takk. Hvordan skal vi finne leiren hvis vi taper du?"

Skald:
"Nadya, thank you. How should we find the camp if we lose you?"

Cervin nods. "I've never ridden with dogs before - there isn't uh, wasn't much snow in my homeland until recently. But if I am to learn now is the time."

Yagello bows to both Nadya and Nevinia, acknowledging both women. To the Ulfen, he replies, "Yes, mi'lady, you have a keen eye. I am not myself and have been suffering from this illness for the last day or so. If you believe me to be a threat to the camp, please say so and I will gladly remain outside its boundaries."

To Nevinia, he straightens up and smiles haggardly. "I would be happy to help you with your animals. They look like stubborn beasts and may not take well to losing their hitch and bridle."

As if to punctuate Nadya's concern, Arkady suffers another round of coughing. He nods in thanks, and goes to join the team preparing the sleds.

"Birgir, Dagnar, bo her med utlendinger og lede dem til leiren, den ene foran på stien. La oss håpe at disse merkelige dyrene ikke har ransaket våre forsyninger." Nadya barks some instructions to Birgir, who nods.

Skald:
"Birgir, Dagnar, stay here with the foreigners and lead them to the camp, the one just ahead on the trail. Let's hope that these strange beasts haven't ransacked our supplies."

"Birgir and Dagnar stay here to help lead way. Others come with us, one each sled." Nadya ensures all of the goods are backed on sleds, and leads Arkady and Cervin to stand on two of the sleds, each with an Ulfen man standing behind them to steer. Before heading out, she acknowledges Yagello, Nevinia, Birgir and Dagnar. "Remember, storm coming. Move quickly." They call out, and their dogs head out along the trail.

The Ulfen do not make much conversation, as the wind and the dogs make conversation difficult. Arkady and Cervin enjoy the ride while it lasts for an hour or so and they stop at a clearing along the trail. Here there is a large igloo, with a fire pit inside marked by stones, and Nadya and the other Ulfen move quickly to setup a camp inside, reenforcing the igloo snow walls and uncovering a small cache of prepared firewood under an overhang of branches. Nadya clucks her tongue as she sees some of the cache overturned, but there is still enough to get a large fire going for the night.

Meanwhile, Birgir and Dagnar stay with Nevinia and Yagello as they shepherd the yaks along, providing a lift when needed. By the time they arrive at the campsite, a roaring and welcoming campfire provides much needed heat for the already raging storm that is beginning to howl.
