Pirate Rob's 13th Star (Inactive)

Game Master Pirate Rob

Greetings!

I am looking for ~2-3 more players for my new Shattered Star pbp using 13th Age.

What is 13th Age you ask?

It's a streamlined, player driven, high fantasy d20 RPG by Johnathan Tweet (3.0 Player's Handbook, Over The Edge) & Rob Heinsoo (4e lead designer)

Experience with 13th Age is not necessary (a plus though), but a willingness to learn and at least a basic familiarity with any d20 system (such as Pathfinder) should do just fine.

Not looking for fully stated out characters at the moment, I'm much more interested in the awesome flavor of characters. Going to go for 4-5 characters total and I already have a couple of buddies coming so I only have a few slots as mentioned above.

So go ahead and post with your interest, and when you get a chance some details on character concept/background.

Here is my previous Adventure Path/13th Age crossover if you want an idea of what the game will be like.

Also you can peek at the discussion thread for some useful links and an example of character creation.

One last note: I run my pbps quite quickly. I expect multiple posts most weekdays. I do occasionally disappear for long-weekends for cons, but always with plenty of warning.

This will be a fast paced, action packed game and I expect it to run about 15 weeks.

Thank you for reading.
As always if you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to let me know.

Silver Crusade

Dot.

I have no idea what 13th age is when I get home ill look at it sounds fun..so DOT

I havent 13th age in a year or so, what classes do you need and which ones do you have already?

As close to for sure so far is a half-orc bard. My other buddies are currently being slackers and deciding what to make.

Any place where we can find the rules for 13th age for free? The link shows me a book that would have to be purchased for 45 dollars, and there is no guarantee that for those of us who purchase the book get in either.

As mentioned, you can peek at the discussion thread for useful links.

One of them is a link to the 13th Age SRD.

ah, gotcha. What do you want us to do for our one unique thing? Do we just give something for flavor, or does it give us a mechanical bonus? Can it be something weird, born with 6 fingers on each hand or, my skin color is green which is considered impossible for my race.

I'll be playing the aforementioned half-orc bard, and I intend to have a blast.

Please be sure you've read the entirety of Pirate Rob's post, and be honest with yourself: don't apply if you can't or won't post with that frequency. If you need help figuring out your typical posting rate, shoot me a PM and I can give you your stats.

fast paced games are my thing, as it is my goal to get through all adventures up to Iron Gods one way or another. 15 weeks seems rather impossible, though if the DM thinks he/she can do it, then go for it.

This seems like a fast fast paced game, like I'm going to be posting 5 times per day to actually get done in 15 weeks.

another question: any chance of getting pfs credit for this as if we had played a pregenerated character? As that would be legal since adventure paths don't have to follow the pfs sules when playing pregenerated characters. In fact, someone could run an AP under 5th edition rules and still get credit for it.

Dotting for interest. Thinking a ranger. Hey pirate rob.

Yarr.

If you look over at the discussion thread, one of the spoilers has a list of sample One Unique Things.

The One Unique Thing gives no mechanical bonuses but does have lots of story/flavor implications. It's a way both to make your character special and to help shape the world.

I'm really interested, I just don't know how to build a character so I can't provide you with any crunchy bits. :D

But I'd like to give it a shot! If we're doing the AP, that means overall I can use the Golarion setting to make my character interesting?

The crunchy bits are really easy to do in 13th Age and I'm happy to help whomever we decide on with those. We are indeed in Golarion, but use it for awesome inspiration, don't be bound by it.

The sample character I made over in discussion is a bad-ass black leather wearing Paladin of Asmodeous. Sure they don't exist in JJ's Golarion, and if nobody had made one they probably wouldn't exist here either. But since I did, they do!

13th Age is very player driven, with players getting to make up/influence large parts of the story/setting.

If I could I would want to play a young, starry eyed hero whose unique trait is potential. At the beginning he wouldn't have anything really special about him, but through effort and force of will, he grows faster than he was believed to be able of accomplishing.

Maybe he has the ability to do something supernatural, but if possible I'd like to see him become more of a martial type. Probably human.

So my ranger will be the grizzled veteran who's unique trait is that he never gives up or backs down.

Oh dear... this is gonna be deadly.

Red: you might want to reconsider the "never backs down" part. Retreating from combat can be a pretty... necessary... part of 13th Age, especially with the double-strength combats that this campaign entails.

On the other hand, it could mean we have to wait until you're down to retreat. :P

That is a possibility. Do you have a suggestion for a different one?

"Never backs down" doesn't seem quite right as a One Unique Thing to me, sounds more like a potentially lethal personality trait.

Some related ideas for a One Unique Thing leading to a character who doesn't like to back down... One Unique Things and explanations

Unrecognized bastard son of the Sczarni Big Boss.
Character is desperate to prove himself and get recognized in the eyes of his father.

Banished from the Boneyard by Pharasma for unspeakable crimes.
Soul can't die due to Pharasma not accepting him.

Does not feel pain.

etc etc

Since this is Shattered Star, we're Pathfinders right?

If we want to be... :P

If we can come up with some other explanation for our presence, Pirate Rob would probably go along with it.

I'm thinking son of a great chieftain/hero desperate to prove his courage and strength. To prove that he is worthy of being the next chieftain.

How about this:

Johnathan "Jack" Grimm, a young man from a dwindling family line of adventurers. Through sudden loss he finds himself dragged into the adventure before his 'time', but his heart is in the right place... But can his body and skills keep up?

One Unique Thing:
Surprisingly competent at this 'adventurer' stuff.
Unknowingly, he is the reincarnation of a fallen iconic hero. The more he pushes himself, the more his prior life's memories become remembered.

This would be able to simulate the 'feel' that I want from the character (The growth of his abilities as he realizes them) but mechanically be easier to handle than some kind of extra development or choosing the feats/powers as I need them.

Thoughts?

Very interested, I have a fair bit of experience playing 13th age and would be love to play a fast paced game. Will post a character concept soon.

Also, are classes from 13 true ways allowed? I have an idea for a necromancer.

Alright, thanks guys for your interest, but a couple of my original buddies were supposed to be joining us were unfortunately not able to make it.

While I have enough interest in this thread to put together the game, I'm going to put it on the shelf and save it for when the people I already know are more available.

Thank you again everybody for your interest and my apologies for all the work you've already put forward in brainstorming.

Thanks,
-Pirate Captain Rob
