The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Last year a beautiful noblewoman from Nisroch in Nidal named Anya was married off to the Baron of Karpad and two months ago, she bore him a son. Anya's family-who have had several Pathfinder agents among their ranks-have reached out to the Society after Anya's letters spoke of increased paranoia in her husband and then ceased altogether.

Thus the Society has chosen you to travel to the rural Nidalese hamlet of Karpad to ensure that Anya is safe and that everything is well in the town.

Why, Bertram was up to his old ways, having returned to the life of a bandit following his fall-out with the Duchess Beatrice of Kent. A half-elf walks in, trying to slick his jet-black hair straight back, but his cowlick in the back keeps popping up and refusing to stay in place.

"Oh, hello chaps? What's it gonna be today then? Headed to Karpad, eh? Lovely this time o' year, or so I've heard."

He slinks into a nearby seat, using a dagger to clean underneath his fingernails.

"Oh, names Wilhelm. You may've heard of my various exploits. Yeah, you heard about all that trouble up in Mendev, what with the demons and what-not. Yeah, I was up there and took out a couple of those big goat-headed ones all on my own. Weren't easy, neither, let me tell you..." I learned a thing or two about fighting demons, though I also had to fight a pack of guards that had turned. Wilhelm, was it? I'm Terrill, hello all. What districts did you fight in, Wilhelm?"

As he waits to hear Wilhelm's account, he looks around the room at his fellow Pathfinders. Terrill himself is a half-elf, a bit on the short side for his race, though his arms and shoulders are corded with muscle. He wears a beautifully crafted breastplate of blackened steel, and a pair of graceful curving blades runs across his back, their hafts rising above his right shoulder, while a stout, black bow can be seen over his left. He is young, but serious and intent in his demeanor, with crudely cut dark hair reaching his shoulders.

"You say we're going to Nidal? Never been there, don't know much about it, except they're freedom-hating tyrants, of course. Wonder what the Society hopes to accomplish there?"

Death you say?! Death should not be feared. Someday it will come for all of us no matter what and it is always followed by birth. How one choose to live the time until that day is a far greater quest.

I am brother Fredrik Greymantle of the church of Pharasma. Wish I could say I heard good things about this Nidal place but that is not the case. And if their souls only find slavery in the afterlife it is because they choose so while still here. But I shall bring them Her world so they know better. There is still time to repent.

But I am sure not all choose to live in servitude to their dark god. In fact, they are given no choice, forced into it by the society they're born into, as if they'd been born into slavery, or prison. As an Andoran and a Desnan, I cannot tolerate the thought."

Looking around at his companions, Terrill quiets, saying, "Forgive me, I had not thought to launch into a tirade on freedom and faith, my ways are usually a bit...quieter. But it will be a pleasure to serve with you, Greymantle - though it may call for a subtler touch than your church is accustomed to."

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Ok! And we're off!

The simplest route to Karpad is to travel up the Usk River past Pangolais to the minor river known as Dimar's Way. While too narrow and shallow for water travel, Dimar's Way carves a path through the countryside, and a road-known as Geron's Way near Karpad-runs parallel to the river from Pangolais to beyond your destination of Karpad. Such a journey takes you several weeks, during which you all get to know each other.

Karpad is an isolated, rural town far from the dark streets of the great cities of Nidal, with cobbled streets and roughly 60 wood and stone buildings, all featuring thatch roofs. The largest structure in the vale is the towering stone manor house at the top of the hill, where Baron Stepan and his family live. In a superstitious effort to ward off shadows, the villagers have set a number of bonfires on the edges of town, and every intersection features a handful of lit torches, all kept burning day and night. The manor house is surrounded by no fewer than six bonfires, and the parapets of its roof are ablaze with lit lanterns.

Sent to investigate Anya's wellbeing, you head through town directly to Boroi Manor. Built on the valley's slope overlooking the town, the manor is the oldest building in Karpad by centuries, and the largest structure in the region; only the town's temple of Zon Kuthon even comes close in either regard. The manor is octagonal, with a central couryard and extensions built into the hillside to the south and west. The great bonfires raging around the manor serve to reveal the cracking paint and crumbling eaves of a once-palatial estate now in decline.

You were not given a cover. The Tiboros family of Nisroch has just asked you to look into the wellbeing of their daughter Anya after her letters mentioned a paranoia in her new husband and then she stopped sending letters recently.

A moment after the knocking, a stern man with a graying beard and dark circles under his old eyes answers the door. "Good evening. My name is Laurentiu, the majordomo of the manor. What may I help you with?"

After hearing that you are Pathfinders wishing to speak with Anya, he ushers you inside and says, "Of course. If you will accompany me to the sitting room I will bring the Baroness to you."

Laurentiu escorts you to a room with red wallpaper accented with floral designs in gold leaf. Armchairs of soft leather surround a low glass table set with light refreshments and a glass chandelier glitters overhead unlit. The room smells pleasantly musty, like old books.

After a short wait, a delicate, thin-lipped, bird-like woman enters the room. "Hello and good evening." Despite her appearance she has a strong voice. "I am Baroness Anya and I am told that you wished to speak with me." Her auburn hair curls across the shoulders of her finely embroidered gown. She wears short sleeves which show off the traceries of scarwork that spiral up her forearms, painful devotions to a painful god. On her right hand, her pinky and ring fingers have been removed above the first joint.

[spoiler=DC 15 KN (religion)]The partial removal of fingers is common among the daughters of wealthy Nidalese nobility-it shows that they will never need to work for their living.[/sopiler]

Anya reacts with some surprise when Terrill and Hiram indicate that you have been sent by her family to check on her well-being. "Ah. Yes, well I apologize for causing you and them any distress. My lack of correspondence resulted from a cessation of all post into or out of Karpad when the disappearances and tallowthroat outbreak started up a month ago."

She readjusts herself and begins awkwardly, "As to my previous letters, I will admit that Stepan is not today the man I married a year ago. Shortly after the birth of our son, several members of our staff and three locals in town came down with a strange new disease. When the first of the infected died, Stepan released all but one of the fetchlings working in the manor from service and promised that 'the shadows wouldn't take the town.' That was when his paranoia began."

"Then it only got worse when not long after the mysterious disappearance of Karpad's citizens began. Stepan's madness only seemed to increase. It makes sense, he has a lot on his shoulders as the Baron of the town and with all this mischief. A week after all of this messengers to and from Karpad stopped traveling for fear of spreading the illness plaguing the region, which explains my silence."

Anya pauses for a moment to allow you to digest all that she has told you. "So, in answer to your quest, yes, I am fine. But I do not think it would be safe for you to leave until the sickness is over and cured. As long as you are here, perhaps you could assist us? Could you investigate the disappearances and the disease? Hopefully you will be able to put an end to both and restore Karpad to peace and my husband to sanity. I would be more than willing to help the needs of your people milady. With Pharasma's blessing we will come to the botton of the issue. Was this city's temple able to identify or treat the disease? Are there more known cases? Is any of the infected still alive? How many peole disappeared so far?

Chasik, listens intently to what the Baroness says, and nods at appropriate times. When told about the progression of the disease, a shocked crosses his face briefly, he is somewhat surprised how quickly...well whatever it was, spread.

Maam, was there a specific location that the disease started?

Terrill rolls his eyes slightly as Fredrik speaks, muttering, "So much for a subtle touch about faith..." then turning his attention back the Anya.

"As my friend says, we would be happy to help, now that we are here," he says in a more conversational tone. "I am pleased that you are well, though I am a bit alarmed to hear the truth of the tales about your husband. There is not only a disease, but townsfolk are disappearing? How many have been lost to each?"

After a pause, another question occurs to Terrill, "And what do fetchlings have to do with it all?"

Hold on a minute here. So we just walked in a quarantine? Bizzle's face has the look of a bewildered gnome indeed. Seems like we don't have much choice but to help now, does it? Ha! The gnome then looks up at Fredrik and the others and says, Well, if anyone dies I guess we'll be needing those fires. Can't have the corpses of some weird disease killing off the populace!

Hiram frowns at the idea of being in quarantine. "Well, madame, I suppose since we're here, we might has well be of use. But first, what is this 'tallowthroat?' I've never heard of the disease. How would one know if one had it?"

"The people have called it Tallowthroat for the swelling around the neck that happens to victims of the disease. The clerics have not been able to determine its cause or cure. The local fetchlings seem to be immune, however, which has led to some unfortunate mistreatment and blame. It is possible that they have caused it but I am not quick to jump to that conclusion. The disease seems to have sprung up from nowhere; we have not been able to trace its origin."

"There are certainly infected still in town and I'm sure you will be able to find some to examine or at least find people with first-hand experience who will speak with you."

"I believe to date there have been three disappearances; we have absolutely no idea what has happened to them, they simply vanished."

"Thank you so much for offering to help us. Karpad will thank you in the end, I am sure. Unfortunately I don't think my husband would approve if I were to offer you space in our manor tonight. But the Willow, The Weeping Willow Inn that is, is the sole tavern and generally has a few rooms available. I've heard its quite comfortable and is certainly popular among the townsfolk."

Hiram frowns and rubs his throat unconsciously. "Hmm. Is there a part of town we could find these fetchlings to question them?"

Does this inn have a gambling hall nearby? Bizzle asks bluntly. If so then it will do nicely.

Is there any general knowledge of these fetchlings to be had by some sort of knowledge check?

Could you provide us a list of the people who have disappeared and where they used to live milady?
