Guaril Karela seems trustworthy enough to Belroar. There was no obvious falsehood he could tell.

Belroar looks over the building.

"How stealthy do we need to be? I suspect if the city finds out we broke in, they might be upset. Anyone know how to pick a lock or something? Maybe there's a window open on the roof? It looks a bit weak though, probably not the place you want me flailing around."

I think you said you didn't need perception checks, right?

"I'd suggest acting natural. As natural as any of us can be." Ophelia has no moral boundaries preventing her from doing the job, but the thought of attracting attention isn't exactly appealing.

"Malgorrak is quite good at dismantling things," Aurelia notes proudly with a small hint of a smile. "Give me a minute, and him a few more on top of that, and we'll be able to make our way inside. I do try to avoid having him out in public, though... townsfolk don't tend to take kindly to seeing him, you know?"

If there are no protests, Aurelia goes through her summoning ritual as qucik as she can. She uses a pinch of ash from her spell component pouch to create a circle on the ground from which Malgorrak appears, wreathed in flames and without any trace of the wounds the minotaur had inflicted on him a few weeks back. The pit fiend seems to take incredible pleasure in breaking apart the lock, surprisingly deft despite the massive talons on his hands.

If we're willing to wait for him to take 20, that gives Mal a 25 on Disable Device.

@Ophelia, feel free to still make that Perception check from the earlier post. It may matter later.

@Belroar, feel free to make Perception checks at any time you desire. I typically won't prompt you to make them in cases such as traps or secret doors.

@Moadis and Valik, are your characters coming along with everyone else despite initial objections?

Although there are some people fishing further down on the pier, apparently they're used to seeing all manner of individuals in the area so they pay you little mind.

Malgorrak takes his time and has no trouble unlocking the front door.

Upon opening the door and going inside, you discover that darkness fills the warehouse, the ambient light from outside blocked by a filthy, oily film on the structure’s few windows. Darting illumination comes from light reflecting off the water through a splintered hole in the floor. Throughout the warehouse, crates, boxes, and barrels lean against each other in vaguely sorted stacks. A lingering smell indicates some of the contents are certainly spoiled.

In the west side of the building is a large hole in the floor. Perched in the middle of the hole, teetering on split planks, sits a large crate stamped with three crows arranged in a triangle. Handholds cut into the stout wooden crate ring the rim. Other barrels, boxes, and crates sit stacked along the walls of the warehouse. Just inside the door sits a handful of crates and kegs of beer. Most of these smaller crates and barrels contain foodstuffs if the outside markings can be believed. Some crates reek of rot. Stacks of simple coffins sit against the east wall.

A crane clings to a rail running the length of the warehouse, hanging 5 feet below the high ceiling, and appears to be designed to slide out to extend past the loading doors along the west wall.

The floor surrounding the hole looks unstable and difficult to navigate around it. It will require an Acrobatics check to move around that area.

As your characters move inside, please move your icons accordingly if you can, otherwise I can do it for you.

Valik, visibly unhappy with the task at hand, relents his opinion and follows orders, since it was the Society that had given him this task. He waits for the door to unlock, then goes inside with the others.

He looks around the warehouse for any signs of trouble. Satisfied that there are none {or stopping if there are), Valik walks over to where the crate is hanging, and looks around to see if there is an easy way to obtain the item in question.

Melufiuos' Perception Check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Belroar and Valik note the large variety of items stored here in the warehouse: beer, blocks of clay, coffee, coils of rope, dried fish, lead ingots, nails, nets, raw cotton, rough wool, spare sails, timber planks, various pulleys and tools, and cheap weapons. They also barely hear some light scratching coming from the pile of crates on the north wall near where Melufiuos is now standing, perhaps it's just some vermin.

Mel casts Detect Magic, but everything here is mundane.

Valik discovers no obvious method to retrieve the chest, but there is probably some suitable items around to come up with some solution despite the damaged flooring around the crate.

She lets the others take a lead role, finding a small box to sit upon with a sigh. Water. The box is sort of suspended on rotting boards over the harbour, and some of the boards around it have collapsed in.

It's a pelican warehouse, which means it's built in the bay above the water, so the space under the hole is water.

Likewise, Valik doesn't have time to protect himself from the teeth of a huge rat, and is bitten as well. Valik takes 3 damage.

I apologize for not spotting this earlier, Mel, but drawing a weapon is a move action, so you'd just be able to strike with the handaxe, not cast a spell too. I initially thought the matter in question was whether or not it was a surprise round, hence my misunderstanding.

Aurelia, meanwhile, sighs emphatically and sits back on the crate. She fans her face with her hand, hoping this nonsense would be over so they could get out of this stuffy environment...

Gamemaster | CC Map | S4 Map

Valik and Melufiuos, unfortunately you have both been infected with Filth Fever. It won't become apparent for 1d3 ⇒ 2 days, which is out the scope of this scenario. However, you'll still need to have the disease removed, mostly likely with the purchase of a Remove Disease spell. It'll cost either 150 gp or 1 PP. We'll take care of that at the end of the scenario

Belroar and Ophelia rush over to help out the others, pulling out their weapons on the way.

Valik kills one the rats with a blow that breaks its neck.

Melufiuos hacks at another with his empowered handaxe, but the wound is not enough to drop it.

Moadis swings his hammer at one of the rats, but it deftly dodges the powerful blow.

Malgorrak ends the rat threat by clawing to death the one Mel wounded and devouring the last one. A Halfling sized rat is a big meal, so he's occupied for awhile.

Aurelia waits (im)patiently for the others to finish.

Combat Over.

Besides the now dead rats, there is still the matter of the safe retrieval of the crate.

Valik looks at the gash in his leg, then shrugs. Its only a flesh wound, it will heal, he thought to himself. He walks around the crate, very carefully to not disturb the precarious position it is in. He then looks around the rest if the room, and spots some timber planks. He wonders if they would help support the weight of the box, but knows it could be a two man job. He looks to his companions, and his eyes go wide when seeing his burly half-Orc friend Belroar.

Belroar, come give me a hand with these planks. The two of us can place them under the crate to support it. Then hopefully we can gain access to the ledger we need

Valik will take 10 = 15 acrobatics. As far as what I want to accomplish...unless I misunderstand the description is the split planks are supporting the crate currently, and I would presume the split planks are fragile and could break if pressure were applied. I want to use the wood timbers to support the weights of the crate, so it will not fall into the ocean below. Once the timber are in place, I could go across them, and retrieve the ;edger. Make sense?

The titles and subjects seem completely unrelated to each other: Practical Thaumaturgy In Accordance with Creation, Geographic Anomalies of the Inner Sea, Under Kaer Maga: A Trial and Travel, Physiology of Dragons: An Illustrated Reference, and Lost Sarusan. The leather folder contains cargo manifestos, warehouse inventories, and other financial logs from a dozen different merchant houses and trade guilds.

The crate also contains 10 sets of masterwork thieves’ tools, three flasks of alchemist’s fire, a flask of acid, a dozen jars of various inks, a footprint book, adamantine weapon blanch, three bags of powder, a deck of marked cards, and two sets of average loaded dice.
