PbP GameDay 2: PFS 05-07 Port Godless (5-9)

Game Master SwampTing

A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 5–9.

Few are as adept at fighting demons as the Riftwardens, an organization of spellcasters dedicated to protecting the boundaries between the planes. Many are already committed to the Fifth Crusade in Mendev and are unable to assist the Pathfinders directly in the society’s upcoming expedition into the Worldwound, but if the Pathfinders assist the Riftwardens elsewhere, perhaps a small number of the mages might be free to return the favor. Unfortunately, this means entering the godless nation Rahadoum, where several Riftwardens have recently disappeared.

Content in "Port Godless" also contributes directly to the ongoing storylines of the Cheliax, Osirion, and Qadira factions.

You will have time to rest up and still launch an attack before the next dawn if that is what you wish. It would be about 6pm as you leave the bath house. Kline will be able to get Aestrid her new holy symbol within an hour (this can happen the same time as Exiel sending his familiar to scout out the place), and getting to the sewer door will take another hour or so. You can rest for 8 hours and still attack the compound before 5 a.m. the next day. If you want to buy anything else, however, you will need to wait till the market opens the next day.

If you are resting, Ranus and Aestrid please post your spell memorisations for the attack.

Exiel, from talking to your familiar, you are able to come up with this rough sketch. Only roughly to scale and proportion.

The walls are about 10ft high.

Because you played it safe, your familiar flew by undetected, but was also unable to pick up any more useful information than what is reflected in the picture.

Male Human Fighter (Archer) 9

The archer watches his companions with admiration - if he'd served under a few more military leaders half as cautious as they, he'd a have a lot more friends alive. He offers, "Y'all want me to go pick anything up for the job? Any subterfuge-type material or weapons? I rummaged in my pack and found this wan thingy which I can't use, but I picked up somewhere on one of these weird Pathfinder jobs. Totally forgot I even had it till just now." Scrillion holds up a slender wand decorated in fine silver etched runes. "Apparently it can alter yerself, all sneaky-like. Only has a few charges left, but might be useful depending on whether or not y'all want to reconnoiter."

Regarding the party makeup and Aestrid frontlining, Scrillion IS a fighter/archer, so he'd be fine standing in harm's way. He brought his greatsword, so while it isn't quite as devastating as a fistfull of arrows, there's no reason he has to go ranged in this fight.

Oh, and it's a Wand of Disguise Self with five charges. It's totally ridiculous that he bought it, since he can't cast the spell, but I didn't think very carefully when I bought it. So, if someone could use it, knock yourself out.

Hmm...personally I think we'd do well with at least 1 silence and 1 silent image to hide us/silence an alarm. A dispel magic would also be handy. But we don't want to skimp on combat spells either since there's bound to be one or two hard fights in there.

"That may be a useful tool, though we don't need to squander it. Aestrid appears to have an item that allows her to adopt such disguises. If we could silently eliminate one of the guards and have Aestrid adopt his guise to look around corners and check that the coast is clear for the rest of us, we should be able to slip around relatively unseen, at least for a time. If nothing else, if we're spotted with one who appears to be one of their own, the guards are likely to question her rather than sound the alarm right off the bat."

"I'm also thinking that if any of our number has skill with enchantment magics LILLIAN!!!, we may be able to 'persuade' one of the guards to tell us about the security measures in the compound and maybe even to 'show us around' as a 'spot of fun'."

Lillian perks up.. "I have a couple of spells that might be useful.."

Ranus frowns as Exiel speaks of illusion magic, and shakes his head. "Unfortunately, I have little skill with such magics. I may be able to work a scroll or wand should we procure one, though I would not place my faith in that should we need it in the heat of the moment. I can however create fog, or an invisible servant to perform a task."

"Hmm...a fog would obscure our actual position, but may give away the fact that we are there to begin with. If your skills lie in conjuring, perhaps a spell to conjure grease or webs to hinder our enemy from getting to whatever it is they use to sound the alarm would be useful? Failing that, there is always the most direct...and final means of silencing someone. Whilst I hate to do it necessarily, allies of devils and demons are not amongst those I would stay my hand for."

Not sure what spells you have in your spellbook, but I'm sure your discretion will serve you well too. Basically, anything that can disable/incapacitate quickly or hide us. If all else fails, haste is always a solid fallback generally useful spell. Actually, arcane sight and dispel magic may also be useful for spotting magical traps and alarms.

It looks like we're going to try to raid the place this night, and it's entirely possible that our secondary mission is to rescue them without spending the extra day, so do the best you can with the spells in your spellbook and we'll make the rest of it up as we go along. =)

Still keen for Aestrid to prepare 1 or 2 silence spells since most alarms are raised by sound. Apart from that, and illusions, I think it's best to go with fast disables and fast kills.

The Exchange

Male Human Fighter (Archer) 9

Scrillion absently scratches an old scar on his chest. "So, anyone want me to pop out and get anything? They must have a - what, 'scrollery'? around here; I could get one of them 'silence' thingamabobs if y'all can't cast it. Otherwise, I'm going to stretch out. Guessing it's going to be a long night."

"Thanks Scrillion, but I don't think we will have the luxury of shopping if we want to act before daybreak tomorrow." =(

"Alright, so this is the plan we've got so far, I think. We'll start by having Lillian attempt to charm one of the guards, and through that find out how many guards there are, what alarm systems they have in place and what traps or secret protocols they may have in place. Then she can convince him to take a stroll. Whilst we're insdie, Aestrid can use her hat of disguise to impersonate him and look around corners for us, and possibly divert the attention of other guards from the rest of us ."

"We'll backtrack and enter by the sewers, if only to make sure that the way out by the sewers is clear for our escape. If an alarm is raised, I highly doubt the city guard will be coming by that way, especially since most people don't know about it. Unless we can find a way to grant ourselves and all the Riftwardens the ability to fly, the sewers are probably our best bet for getting away. "

"We will try to avoid detection as long as we can using the information from Lillian's 'friend', but once we are detected, we move aggressively. If we can discover the location of any group that is habitually holed up in a location that few others would visit or patrol, we strike at those first before the alarm is raised, since once the alarm is raised they are likely to come hunting. Best to eliminate those threats first. We move against the guards on patrol or on watch last, since a guard not at his post is almost always rightly seen as a cause for alarm."

"This is all tentative, of course, subject to change depending on what Lillian finds out. Also the slightest mishap could send it all out the window from the get-go. But for now, do you guys have any comments or critiques about the plan?"

Aestrid, might I suggest for your third level spells, shape stone or dispel magic may be good options? The blackfires appear to be spellcasters, so I'm expecting magical wards. It might be useful to be able to remove them, or create a passageway around them. Sorry to have to ask so much of you, but with the ways clerics work, you have access to the most options on such short notice. XD

Ranus, do remember we have 2 sorcerers in the party if you need activation of 1st-level or 2nd-level scrolls that you otherwise need UMD to cast. =)

Unfortunately Ranus hasn't gotten any spells added to his book beyond levelling, as he's been getting GM credit mostly and not playing. His only 3rd levels are Fly and Ice Spears, 2nds are Acid Arrow, Create Pit, False Life, and Glitterdust. I intend to fill out the book when I have a chance, this character's not been used in quite awhile though. As for scrolls, (almost) all of his are non-evocation/non-illusion. He does have scrolls of haste and web as well, and a UMD of +13.

"That sounds like a good plan, Exiel. We shouldn't wait longer than we have to to free the Riftwardens. A compound of the Blackfire, and a captured group of Riftwardens.. both amazing and respected conjurers. I'm sure some amazing knowledge could be found in there, both for my own studies and for the Mistress.., Ranus muses thoughtfully.

"We won't be splitting up, Isaac. We will be waiting at a distance whilst Lillian attempts to charm one of the soldiers. If there are no guards posted on the outside of the gate, Lillian can still try to charm one of the guards in one of the watch towers by calling out to the first one she sees to 'talk' to him, and cast her spell whilst he looks out from the tower. Or if one of them is patrolling the parapet."

"Once charmed, it should not be difficult to persuade him to come out for a quick chat with a lovely young lady such as herself. Perhaps if she posed as a baker who has woken up early to do the day's baking, and invited the guard to sneak out and go visit her store at the other end of town, that would get him out of the way, and mean that there's one guard less that we have to kill."

Aestrid is ready with revised spells for a morning raid, and has the means for a second disguise self, a scroll.

Aestrid laughs, a trilling, mocking thing, "Don't fool yourself, we will indeed be splitting up by sending Lillian in alone while we watch from 'some distance', however far that is. This ends one of three ways, she gets attacked for failing to charm the guard while we scramble to save her, the plan fails because of other guards we haven't accounted for, in the tower perhaps or within hearing distance of her casting, or it goes off without a hitch. I see more avenues that lead to failure than success, but since I seem to be in the minority, I'll work with what we have. Perhaps I can try to put myself in a helpful position disguised as another early riser, perhaps a drunk on his way home, and I can offer a similar disguise to one of you if you like."

"I'm counting on the guards not wanting to let Lillian in...and I certainly do not want Lillian to go in on her own. If she can't charm a guard and lure him out of the compound to talk to her, we will abort that portion of the plan."

Turning to face Lillian, he says, "Lillian, whatever you do, don't let them invite you into that slaver compound on your own. I'd say the same to any lady of around or below your age, under any circumstance."

"Well then, let's rest up and get ready for this. The clandestine nature of this mission from here on out is distasteful to me, notwithstanding its necessity, and the sooner it is done the better."

Grand Lodge

Are you guys going ahead with that plan?

If you go ahead with this idea, when you get near the compound, you see a lone guard showing up on the parapet above the gate every now and then, but you can't tell whether or not it is the same one each time. The gate itself is locked and there are no guards outside.

Lillian make a post about what you do at the compound. I assume the others are watching from around the corner of a nearby building too far for the guard to easily spot.

"Nah, been at this for awhile. It's not the most exciting, but it pays the bills. The higher-ups are all magic-people, and we're told to keep out of their way and out of their things, but apart from that, it's pretty much guard duty and baby-sitting those filthy slaves."

Over the course of the conversation, your new friend divulges the following information to you:

1. There are 10 guards in total, and 4 clerks. This does not include the magic using 'higher-ups'. They raise alarms by either ringing brass bells placed around the compound, or simply just shouting.

2. The statue in the courtyard is the sensor for a magical trap designed to capture intruders or painfully restrain escaping slaves. You can bypass the trap by saluting the statue with a particular flourish (that he shows you), which disables it for 30 seconds and prevents it from activating again until a new creature enters the area.

3. New slaves are kept in the big 'plain' building to the North-East before being 'processed'. For some reason, the guards have never been allowed to go in - the slaves are only taken out by the clerks or the 'higher-ups'.

4. The guards are allowed into the fancy building, and there is a lower level which has several cells and 2 locked rooms. Usually, only one of the guards is stationed (on a rotating roster) at the foot of the stairs in the basement with a hand-held bell. There are 2 locked rooms in the lower-level that they are not allowed to enter.

5. Recently, a new slave was brought in and kept in one of the lower-level cells. That new slave creeps the guard out as his tongue has been sliced to ribbons, and he is unable to speak as a result.

Lillian takes the charmed guard down the street and finds a suitable spot to have a drink with him.. There she will attempt to catch up on old times and listen to his stories.. She'll introduce the rest of her companions to him and see if they have any questions for him.. Trying not to take much time btw.. I don't have my books with me as I'm at work. But if you can purchase such a follower, sure, go for it. The guard will realise after the fact that he had been charmed, but he'll also realise in hindsight that you potentially saved his life, or be too enamoured with you to care.

I provided all the information that a guard could be expected to know, but you may want to ask something that I did not think to mention. I'll leave some time for the other members of the party to ask questions, but if there are no further questions, I'll move the party along.

Wow...just wow...very well done, Aurora!

Exiel is almost having difficulty believing that the plan is coming together so smoothly so far. He looks at Aurora appreciatively, knowing full well how instrumental she was to this.

Exiel has no further questions for the guard at this point. After the guard is gone:

"Well done, Aurora! I am truly thankful you are part of the team for this mission. Your skill with enchantments is indeed exceptional, and the information you've acquired may well prove instrumental to our success."

"My guess is that entering by the sewer will lead us to the lower level of the 'fancy building'. He didn't mention a sewer entrance, so it might not have been known to him, or it might lead to one of the locked rooms he mentioned. I'm guessing that's also where the Blackfires do their more 'secret' dealings, so we should be ready for traps on the door or a confrontation right off the bat."

10 guards, 4 clerks, an unknown number of "magic-using higher ups..." Sigh. This isn't turning out to be my day, is it? Shoulda listened to my mom. She wanted me to be a banker. On days like this, I really wish I had. The things I do for the Paracountess...at least she pays well.

Ok, pressing on again. Scrillion, if you had questions, you can ask them in your next post.

Aestrid, you have previously indicated that you can fill a tank role, so I am putting you in front for now. Feel free to propose changes to the party order.

Having sent the guard off on his wild goose chase, you head down into the sewers through a loose storm-drain grate and follow Maroc/Klein's directions to the door that supposedly leads to the compound of the Blackfire Adepts.

You end up approaching from the <West<1/2>East>: 1d2 ⇒ 2 East.

You come to what appears to be a roughly hewn cleft in the wall of the sewer (keep in mind this is a semi-medieval setting, so sewers having walls of natural stone is actually quite normal). A cursory examination reveals no apparent doorway. You are mindful that Kline specifically mentioned a 'door', and after a few moments of searching further to the West, you find a cleanly-cut passage leading to a low flight of steps leading to a locked door.

To Exiel.. "I'll assume you me Lillian, but thanks.. I was trained by a grandmaste back in my home country."

She sighs at the thought of the sewers.. "Let's go.."

My bad, I'm playing in another pbp (non PFS), and I was at work and typing in a hurry. Was a little addle-brained. XD Pretend I said 'Lillian'. XD

"Hmm...the surface of that wall at the end of the cleft looks rather...flat. And I wonder that this cleft appears here at all. Does someone want to check for a secret door whilst I take a closer look at the door further down?"

Exiel walks to the wooden double doors and casts detect magic, focusing for 3 rounds if he detects magical auras.

Edit: Actually, detect magic on the flat wall first. Then detect magic on the door.

Flat wall: no magic

Door: 1 Faint Aura, 1 Moderate Aura

Do you want to examine the door more closely? Also, roll your knowledge arcana for the schools of magic for the auras.

Male Human Fighter (Archer) 9

No questions from Scrillion.

Seeing that Aestrid has confidently stepped to the fore, and several of the others are likewise engaging in checking for traps and such, Scrillion decides that the best place for him is in the back of the party. Keeping his bow drawn, the archer keep a tireless eye behind them, watching for anyone or anything that might wish to surprise them. It doesn't trouble him to be in the rear; his Mark IV is just as deadly from a distance as close up. He bestows a light kiss on his bow as he watches the darkness for anything to rise from the gloom.

Perception to watch behind them: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

Lilliam will assist the detection..

Assist Know Arcana: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Assist Know Arcana: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 +2 to both rolls..

Lillian: you know that the faint aura is an abjuration. You do not know what the moderate aura is.

I was rolling to assist Exiel's Know Arcana.. Giving him a +2 to both his rolls..

Oops. Ok, I'll let Exiel have the +2 to identify the moderate aura. That's the difficult one anyway.

Unfortunately, you can't identify an active spell using spellcraft.

But I can tell you that the abjuration is a 20ft radius emanation coming from the door.

A 20ft radius emanation abjuration, you say?

knowledge arcana to identify moderate aura: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

Exiel furrows his brow as he notes the familiar type and shape of one of the auras.

"I believe I know what magic has been cast around that door. A simple alarm spell. My father used to employ such wards to protect his encampments. It can alert whoever cast the spell to our presence if we get too close to that door. Unless we have some way of removing it, they will know we are coming. Did anyone prepare a dispeling spell?

"Also, has anyone checked the other wall for a secret door?"

Frustrated at being foiled by such a simple spell, Exiel returns to the oddly-flat wall and begins to search it thoroughly with Lucien's help.

Lucien's Perception take 20: 20 + 11 = 31+2 if Exiel is allowed to take 10 to assist, +1 for guidance as well.
