The meeting in Absalom with Drandle Dreng nearly a month ago was brief, as always.
“I have a routine mission for you, though a dangerous routine mission,” the old man whispered in the great hall in the Grand Lodge.

Suffering from a cold and weak from lack of food and rest, the old venture-captain looked quite possibly the worst you’d ever seen him. Through wracking coughs he explained, “An ally of ours in the Land of the Linnorm Kings—Rognvald Skagni—is writing a lengthy report on the state of government in the northern countries of Avistan. I received a letter from him just yesterday requesting several key documents from the vaults here to help him finish the report.” Venture-Captain Dreng patted a large, heavy-looking chest next to him. “These are the documents, and I need you to board a ship north to deliver them to Skagni.”

Dreng tried to stand at that point, but a fit of coughing sent him back into his seat. He gestured for a well-dressed, impeccably kept man standing in the shadows of the room to approach and whispered raspy orders to him. The man picked up a small pouch and a large key and handed them both to the party.

“Venture-Captain Dreng is unwell, as you can see. He wished me to give you this key and this pouch of gold. The key opens the chest, and the gold will buy you passage and get you from the Linnorm coast to Trollheim, where Skagni resides. Whatever you do, do not let the chest out of your sight and do not, under any circumstances, allow it to be searched. These documents are for Mr. Skagni’s eyes only. Are we understood?”

Dreng’s nameless servant waited for a reply and then smiled.
“Good. Now run along; Venture-Captain Dreng needs his rest. I would also suggest you gera up for the cold weather if you haven't already.”

Before the trip, I presume we're able to shop? Sigrun will purchase a cold weather outfit and some furs.

Sigrun had barely paid much attention to the briefing the sick Drandle Dreng had given to them. No--her eyes had widened at the words 'Land of the Linnorm Kings', and her smile had not faded from her face in the intervening period since. "A chance to go home," she muttered happily, mind already filled of memories of the north from her childhood. "Oh, it's been so long..."

A tall and powerfully built Ulfen woman, Sigrun has long, unkempt dark hair decorated with braids and a generally wild look about her. Her face is tattooed with blue ink like clawmarks across both her cheeks, and her dark hair is braided haphazardly along the side of her head. She wears a dented and unpolished breastplate, and on her back is a large wooden shield, the darkwood decorated with a howling wolf's head in white paint. An entourage of various weaponry and miscellanea poke out of her numerous belt buckles and backpack, and a wolf-fur cloak and hood hang from her shoulders.

Sorry for the wait. Low Tier it is. Now let's get to pathfinding.

The chest is 2 feet wide, 4 feet long, and 3 feet deep. It’s made of heavy oak bound with iron, and locked with an enormous, finely crafted steel lock. It weighs 100 pounds as an unfortunate someone finds out, it's alot heavier then it looks.
Who's carrying this?

Las finds that Rognvald Skagni is a recluse but is a researcher in lore nad is highly regarded in his circle and even his critics admit awe in some of his findings.

The land will be cold and Cold Weather gear will be useful.
Las You have guidance?
The average daytime temperature in Trollheim during this adventure is just above freezing, and the average nighttime temperature hovers around –5°Fahrenheit.

Where the directions indicate Skagni’s house should be stands only the charred husk of a burnt-out building. Bits of burnt timber and ruined furniture lie scattered about, but if anything remained after the fire, it seems to have been picked over and looted. Though most of the walls are blackened with soot, a patch along the former front of the residence still shows relatively clean, white walls. Smeared across those white walls, written in reddish-brown letters four feet tall, are the words, “Pathfinders go home.”

Skagni’s now-ruined home sits in a sparse neighborhood of scattered stone and timber homes on the very edge of town.

Heal Check DC 10:

The writing is indeed blood—from whom, it’s impossible
to tell.

Perception DC 25:

In a small copse of trees about 50 feet north of the house in a small, forested area just off the neighborhood’s small, rutted street, seems to be a group of people.

Sigrun tries to heft the chest, but almost immediately her knees shake and she drops it back to the ground with a thud. "Erastil's hairy balls," she curses, "that thing is heavy." I can carry the thing... but still, that's damn heavy. Think it will break if I need to drop it in a hurry? I don't think we'd need to worry if it is just documents. Let's hope they weren't misleading us.

Falcon will be in heavy encumbrace, but he's already in heavy armor and uses two-handers so it won't be too much of a downside, though swimming with it seems like a terrible idea.

Yep my players are all in a different time zone from me lol.

From what the party can discover, the house seems to have being put to torch. No magical traces can be seen in it and the fires seem to have started from the roof and spread from there.

The house is fully looted and all valuables not left to the fire are assumed to have being taken. The blood written on the walls are to have come from a human, hopefully not the good archivist.

Trollheim is a large city with high, secure walls and a sprawling, frozen network of small neighborhoods and districts, many of which contain their own defenses.
Many of Trollheim’s market districts are unruly, smelly, industrious, and busy, while residential districts are generally neater, calmer, cleaner, and more secure from Irrisen invasion.
It’s frowned upon to cause trouble in residential neighborhoods, and the wide streets therein are largely crime-free.
Skagni’s burned out home is on the far western outskirts of on such outlying district.
It's possible to purchase supplies from this town.

The men in the forest emerge carrying axes in both hands. Three of them are in Chain shirts while their leader from the backs in in Chainmail. Their scowls indicate how friendly they are of course their leader helps.
"Kill not the good looking ones!!! Especially the woman!"

Ditizie is a bit of a bugbear on the GM side of things. As a player, I prefer it because you can make all the changes you want without screwing up the baseline template. If you forget where stuff was, just reopen the link. It's also really easy to see the progression as everyone's previous map is unaffected. But in truth, any map system is better than none, imho.

With his line of sight impeded, Las puts away his crossbow, pulls out his whip, and takes step closer to Falcon. At the moment, Las was grateful to be standing behind a line of martial types.

As Las moves forward to stand behind the more melee capable party members, Artix looses a shot to make up for his dismal performance previously. Striking a bandit in the arm, his arrrow however doesn't make it much beyond a glancing wound.

However this bandit is already wounded previously and advancing to secure Sigun earns him a slash from the axe ending any advances he may have made.
His compariot fares no better as Falcon's Overhead chop spilts him in two.
Seeing his hirelings being chopped down doesn't faze the boss as with a sneer, he moves in and attempts to hack into Falcon.

"Are you actually brain-dead?" Sigrun growls in the leader's ear, side-stepping around to his side and laying her weapons into him. Las finds that with one cleaved in two, another with an arrow in his head, yet another one losing his head and their leader missing both arms. He's pretty confident they're dead.

He does find however;

Note 1:

For the sum of 50 gold crowns, you and your mercenaries are to watch Rognvald Sk agni’s residence on the edge of town for two months. Ignore looters or petty thieves—instead watch for Pathfinders, and if you see them, kill them. Any in your crew who can prove to me they dealt the killing blow on those murderous demons earns a 100 gold crown bonus.

Hjort Fastaxe

Note 2 in rather delicate handwriting:

Do as Hjort instructed, but do one thing more for me: capture at least one Pathfinder, preferably an expedition leader. Bring him or her to me separately, and I will reward you an additional 100 gold crowns.
