StephNyan here!

Saera's my level 3 musket master. She's the daughter of a succubus, abandoned at a young age, and instead raised by a loving half-elf and half-orc pirate couple. Due to her own race and the races of her parents, Saera's got a very open mind when it comes to differences between people.

Her succubus inheritance makes Saera a bit flirtatious at times, but she sticks with jokes there. Diplomacy's not Saera's strong suit, but she's quite good at telling lies.

Hello, fellow child of a succubus. Swayaah sticks to melee.

Now it's time to find out how badly the Scrutiny of the Stars "boon" messes with her sleep schedule.

A female tiefling yawns her way into the room, and reflexively scratches her hair. She squeaks in pain as she scratches one of her horns with her sharp claws.

"Ow! Dammit. Gods, I need coffee." Swayaah's wings twitch nervously.

Ever since she returned from the city of Eto in the Osirian Desert after tracing down the remains of the Ruby Sage, Swayaah hasn't slept well. Her dreams are no longer filled with her tearing things apart with her claws in a hunt, or meetings with that cute human with the whip. Instead she sees what those Divs told her to remember: locusts sweeping the land, the dead rising from their tombs and armies of Divs destroying everything in sight. In the middle of the army is some kind of demon, raging through the crowd, tearing everything apart. Suddenly they all whisper a lone word, "remember."

Swayaah remained with her mother for a few weeks, hoping she would know of an event long ago. When her mother didn't, Swayaah hoped the nightmares would simply fade away. At this point, Swayaah figures the best thing to do is let off some steam by saving someone and tearing down some badguys.

"Allow me, Ma'am." The tiefling sees a young handsome human male hand her a steaming cup of coffee. Most of his light brown hair has grown back, but is missing several clumps.

"My name is Wadi, formerly of the Absalom actors guild, now trying to broaden my horizons!"

Eric Swanson here, checking in.

"Sometimes, yeah." Swayaah sighs. "I triggered a trap. Instead of the usual poisoned bolt or trap door nonsense, I got a vision. Divs rising up from no where, dragging an army of the undead and locusts across the desert, destroying everything in their path."

Swayaah takes a deep breath to calm her nerves. "Ever since then, my nightmares have replayed that scenario. One difference is, there's a demon in the middle of it, now. A bigger, meaner, taller version of me, I'd say. She's tearing everything apart. Kinda fun, and reminds me of my normal dreams. But then everything stops to look at me and says, remember."

"Remember what? And why is that demon staring at me? And why do I wake up with claw marks all over? I haven't done that since I was a kid." Swayaah sighs.

"I'm a Pathfinder, dammit. I figure the best way to get rid of stress is to kick some badguys where the sun don't shine." A grin flashes across her face. "I'm here for some action. Should get the blood boiling and this nightmare out of my head."

Mendev’s Pathfinder lodge in the capital city of Nerosyan is housed within Starrise Spire, a defensive tower in the outer wall whose pinnacle glows with celestial light that shines out like a beacon, simultaneously giving comfort to Nerosyan’s defenders and acting as a warning to any who might wish the city harm.

Venture-Captain Jorsal of Lauterbury calls a short meeting on a covered balcony overlooking the city. A middle-aged Mwangi man with greying hair, he closes the door to the spire’s interior and takes a seat in one of the set-up camp chairs, gesturing for his guests to do the same.

“We Pathfinders of Mendev,” he states, making a sweeping hand gesture that encompasses everyone present, “have our own agendas, but these must sometimes give way to the greater need: the protection of this land and its people from the horrors that dwell in the Worldwound.

“We are here by the grace of her majesty, Queen Galfrey of Mendev. Without her support, we would surely be run out of town by Hulrun’s more fervent followers. Our agreement with her states that all Pathfinders are required to volunteer some of their time in the defense of the realm. As relative newcomers, I’ve recommended you to take part in a minor military mission under the command of a veteran crusader named Sir Ilivan of Erages. Although he is not a Pathfinder, you would be wise to follow his advice, as he has been fighting the Abyssal spawn longer than some of you have been alive. I expect you will give him the respect he deserves.”

Venture-Captain Jorsal stands and opens the heavy wooden door leading back into the lodge, revealing a tall half-elven man clad in heavy plate armor, wearing a red tabard typical of the Mendevian Crusaders, and carrying a cavalry helmet in his left hand. He gives a professional nod to Jorsal before striding to the front of the group, surveying everyone with poorly disguised disappointment.

“Pathfinders,” he barks in quick staccato without further preamble, “our mission is simple. The recent attacks on the wardstones have compromised our defenses, and the enemy presses its advantage. We have received word of attacks on Fort Portolmaeus to the north, but the crusader leadership suspects that other parts of the line may have been breached as well. We will proceed to Fort Portolmaeus tomorrow morning on horseback to assess the damage, using the passphrase ‘That the Black Prince might be redeemed’ to permit us entry. On the way there, we will scout for enemy movements and other signs of demon activity. Once we have completed our assessment, we are to return to Nerosyan and you will be relieved of your obligations to the Crown. Do you have any questions?”

Ask your questions. Roll K(Hist/Know/Rel) for knowledge on the mendevian crusades, Diplomacy or K(local) for knowledge of Sir Ilivan.

Please look in the right spoilers for your roll

DC 10 K(hist/rel):

The Mendevian Crusades began almost a century ago when a rift to the Abyss opened in the barbarian kingdom of Sarkoris. The church of the goddess Iomedae
called the First Crusade, and it was largely a success.

DC 15 K(hist/rel):

The wardstones are magical menhirs of tremendous power first built during the Second Crusade. They project a powerful field capable of destroying all but the most powerful demons. Built near the banks of the West Sellen and Moutray Rivers, they stopped the expansion of the Worldwound
until very recently.

There's still more to learn about the history of the area

DC 10 K(local) or Dip:

The half-elven soldier was a smuggler on Lake Encarthan before joining the Mendevian Crusades, a fact he is not ashamed to admit.

DC 15 K(local) or Dip:

Sir Ilivan rose from the ranks of the enlisted to become an officer and was knighted by Queen Galfrey.

DC 20 K(local) or Dip:

The knight hails from the half-elven settlement of Erages in Kyonin, where he had to endure prejudice and segregation throughout his youth. He later joined Kyonin’s military, but ultimately left his homeland after being discharged from this military for striking an elven officer.

DC 25 K(local) or Dip:

Sir Ilivan has become increasingly distant in the past few years due to the horrors endured by all soldiers who fight in the Mendevian Crusades. His most devastating experience involved killing a number of fellow soldiers while he was demonically possessed.

Sir Ilivan responds to Aetherys' question. "That is a wise question to ask. Since the last major attack, the demonic armies have retreated into the Worldwound’s interior. We will most likely face minor demons sent to test the current efficacy of the wardstones. Expect dretches, brimoraks, and possibly schirs.”

An hour or two later, Krux returns from a nearby inn with a wide grin. His hair is tussled and grey skin glistens from sweat. He takes a moment to catch his breath. His information gathering has proven successful, and he briefs his companions on what he has learned before meeting Sir Ilivan...leaving out sordid details of the establishment's proprietor.

"Sir Ilivan is a half-elven soldier from Erages in Kyonin, where he had to endure prejudice and segregation throughout his youth. A former smuggler on Lake Encarthan, he joined the Mendevian Crusades and rose from the ranks of the enlisted to become an officer and eventually knighted by Queen Galfrey. He later joined Kyonin’s military, but ultimately left his homeland after being discharged for striking an elven officer. Sir Ilivan has become increasingly distant in the past few years due to the horrors endured by all soldiers who fight in the Mendevian Crusades. His most devastating experience involved killing a number of fellow soldiers while he was demonically possessed. I bet the military omits this fact in their recruitment propaganda."

Purchases 10 cold iron bolts (2 gp) and cold iron MW dagger (302 gp) for 304 gp.

Now recalling the Knight's story, she bows her head with a compassionate face.

"You... are Sir Ilivan, of course. I am truly sorry, I did not realize who you were. You have my sincerest sympathies, Sir Knight, though I agree that won't bring any of your former companions back. Demons are untrustworthy, but you can count on us. We won't fail you."

Some notes on faction goals

Dark Archive:

Dark Archive faction members should keep and eye out for the strengths and weaknesses of Mendev's defences

The Exchange:

Establish one or more underground contacts in Mendev.

It is not your sympathy I require, but your vigilance. The area is dangerous, and things are not as they seem. Follow my orders, and you'll be fine.

Sir Ilivan leads the pathfinder patrol out of the city, and along the River Road a normally well-used thoroughfare that follows the eastern bank of the West Sellen River. It remains within sight of the river throughout most of the journey, until it briefly veers inland. It seems the party and Sir Ilivan are the only travelers along this route today.

Sir Ilivan turns off of the River Road onto a small, overgrown path that cuts through drooping evergreens. Up ahead is an abandoned village. The enemy uses it as a staging ground.

He dismounts and ties his mare to a tree. (Do any of you have a mount? Sir Ilivan gestures you to leave your mount behind here, if you have one)

He leads the adventurers as quietly as he can up a nearby hill dotted with gnarled apple trees. Just before reaching the top of the hill, he motions for the party members to drop prone and crawl the rest of the way.

An abandoned village lies at the foot of the hill on the banks of the West Sellen River, its decaying structures slowly melting back into the landscape. Between the hill and the village proper lie flooded fields sectioned off by raised, earthen walkways that converge on a larger, dry area.

A group of six mendevian commoners are here: four of them are standing holding threshes, spades and pitchforks, while two more lie on the floor in obvious pain, beleaguered as they are by the standing villagers. A heap of bodies lie nearly, and as the party looks on, one of them seems to be rising from the dead.

DC 18 K(Planes):

The rising corpse smell of Abyssal influence. A type of demon known as a Vermlek can inhabit corpses, wearing them as bodies.

Aetherys follows the knight's guidance, crawling at his side to gaze beyond the hill.

"Vile creatures! That rising corpse is inhabited by a vermlek demon, one that wears skin like we wear clothes. We can't let these villagers fall prey to it. Quickly, let's rescue them!"

No. Sir Ilivan says, with complete lack of emotion in his voice. This is not our mission. Let's return to the mounts.

Swayaah enjoys the day long trek, glad to get out of the city. Sometimes it's nice to get outside and enjoy the sun.

Looking upon the remaining villagers, Swayaah already knows something is up. Her mother would tell her to focus on the bigger mission, but her dad would have leapt down there in an instant.

"Wait, what's our mission again? I thought we're here to stop demons and save people, not sightsee. If we don't get down there now the villagers will die."

Is there some custom Swayaah is forgetting about this village?

So that one is definitely a demon. Why are the others beating people down?

Wadi's first impulse is to agree with Aetherys, and try to rescue the villagers. Hearing Sir Ilvian's response is like a splash of cold water on his fervor. Cautiously making his way over to him he asks softly, "Sir Ilvan, do you believe this to be a ruse set by the demons to ensnare us?"

Swayaah:
The two peasants feating on their prone companion have terror, fear in their eyes, while the two standing by look on in malice. The man risen from the dead looks positively obese, as if something is pushing from the inside - tell-tale signs of a vermlek demon wearing the man as a skin. The two peasants standing by also look a bit fat for the kind of hardship they should be going through. The other four (two of them prone, the other two beating on them) look normal.

Sir Ilivan responds flatly Quite likely. Or they are just evil cultists. Whatever the case, this is not our business. Let's go. he says, without emotion, or without even flinching at the sticks beating down on the prone peasants.

Unless you stop him, he'll return down.
