Venture-Captain Drandle Drang looks tired as he calls an emergency meeting in the middle of night at his chambers in the Grand Lodge. “I’m sorry to call you in on such short notice and on such a dark night, but a friend of the Society needs your help immediately.”

From an adjoining chamber, an elegantly dressed woman of middle age with olive skin and long, straight black hair and piercing eyes steps into the room. “Allow me to introduce to you Hamaria Blakros, of the esteemed Blakros family, whose name I’m sure you all know.”

Hamaria sits at Dreng’s side, smooths her satin dress over her knees, and speaks in a clear though pained voice. “I’m afraid my forebears made a terrible mistake, and I need you to help remedy the situation. When the Blakroses were first gaining a financial and social foothold centuries ago, my ancestors made a pact called the Penumbral Accords with a strange organization on the Shadow Plane called the Onyx Alliance, which granted us trade routes through its dark realm to avoid unpleasant searches, tariffs, and questions among the many parties with whom we traded. At the time, this was an invaluable service, but as our wealth and influence grew, the benefits became less pronounced. Now, almost five centuries later, we no longer want to pay the ongoing price of this agreement. Since that time, we’ve been providing a steady stream of slaves to the Onyx Alliance... including the eldest of our daughters each generation. This year we have two eldest daughters—my twins Eleanir and Michellia—and I refuse to let them be taken!

“But we can’t actively break the Penumbral Accords ourselves. We don’t know all the details other than our end of the bargain, which requires us to deliver slaves to our very own Blakros Museum on the night of each new moon—and to deliver the eldest Blackros daughter of each generation on the new moon after her 21st birthday. We are told to stay away until dawn, and have honored this command thus far. In every instance for generations, we’ve returned to find no sign of the slaves or our own heirs left in the building. They’ve got some device that lets them take our daughters to their plane, something that only functions one night a month, and only until dawn. That night is tonight, and my Eleanir and Michellia are already there! I need you to get in before the sun rises and deactivate or destroy whatever allows them to keep stealing our people. If that prevents them from ever threatening us and holding the Penumbral Accords over our heads again, even better.”

Dreng leans forward. “You understand, I’m sure, how valuable our relationship with the Blakros family is to the Decemvirate. Their assets at the museum are immense, and assisting the Lady Hamaria tonight will go along way to ensuring that both her family and our organization can form a long-lasting alliance that will benefit all parties.” He glances at Hamaria, who nods once in agreement. “Hurry to Blakros Museum, friends. There isn’t much time!”

Unbelievable... Not only would they send off slaves, but even their own family. Ulmari was reprehensible, but at least he wasn't willing to toss me away like that.

She turns to Venture-Captain Dreng. "We're going against beings of shadow, then? I'm guessing light is weakness?"

Mia looks over to them both and then gives a low bow.
"I serve the Decemvirate and shall rescue your daughters and deal with these shadow beings." as she raises, the small Tian-min woman smiles "I am certain we will bring back your daughters unharmed."

This young woman appears to be pale skinned and her hair is braided in a long necklace, doubling over around her. She is dressed in basic robes and even though she is 4 foot 7 inches, she is carrying quite a lot a clearly strong for her size.

The bluedove stirred from her uneasy perch against the wall. A call in the middle of the night did not bode well. She gave a soft gasp as she recognized the noblewoman and nervously began thrumming her bowstring as she listened to the briefing. Oh! They will send us into that infernal museum again, I can feel it...

You've seen her before, surely. A strange sort of songbird, she was hard to miss. She was an something of an assault on the senses, albeit a pleasant one. She looked human at first glance, but a closer look revealed something otherworldly about her... Her dress was a palette of pastels, as if she wished to carry springtime with her always. She had long, diaphanous locks of bright blue that swam around her slender form as if stirred by a breeze unique to her, even indoors where no draft existed. You might think she achieved the color with dyes, except that her brows and even eyelashes matched the shade. Her hair was plaited with ribbons and beads of many colors as well as tiny silver bells that tinkled softly as she moved. Her gait flowed with the grace of a dancer, the hem of her Varisian dancing skirts fluttering showily in her wake.

She met the eyes of the young half-elf she had recognized from the pub and offered him a brief smile. Her jewel-toned eyes were normally the serene blue of sapphires, but had hardened to steely grey-blue as she approached their client.

"Do not weep, Lady Blakros. The hour is late, but it is not too far gone. We shall bring them back along with any others we might save. Just as we brought Imrizade back from the brink, yes? It is past time this fell pact was broken!" She spoke with confidence to comfort the Lady, and then swept out of the room with purpose. She quickly sought her halfling friend, Janira Gavix for her swift aid in research.

Azura has played both Mists of Mwangi and Voice in the Void, so she is familiar with the Blakros Museum and the family that owns it. Too bad past knowledge checks don't transfer! Utilizing my "Friend of Janira Gavix" boon for +1 to my knowledge checks from my Confirmation chronicle. Also purchased a Sleep Arrow from my Murder on the Throaty Mermaid Chronicle.

Agraic is a somewhat scarred figure of a warrior, clad in scale mail and bearing a longsword and shield over his shoulders over his backpack. Unlike some of the others his gear looks a bit worn, and somewhat matches his own carriage--this is the sort of fellow who looks like he's been run over by the cart of life a few times.

"Also, just venturin' a guess but figurin' that burning stuff is straight out?"

Yeah, he's not the most social of beings, to say the least. It also doesn't take him long to get ready -- that's a benefit of being a new Pathfinder, at least.

Zuriel listens with interest to Hamaria's information, his eyes widening at the mention of her own daughters in peril.

He, too, shows signs of Tian-Min heritage but towers over Mia, his height a gift from his mother's side. He stands tall and at attention, and his arms and armor are a stark contrast to Agraic's well-used weaponry.

Though the soldier is an imposing figure, his voice when he speaks is not much above a whisper, quiet and calm.

No child should be taken from her parents. I will do all I can to ensure the safety of your daughters.

It doesn't take the Pathfinders too long to figure out some facts about the Blakros family. They are very well-known after all. The wealthy and prominent House Blakros is a large, extended clan of eccentrics with trade contacts rivaling those of the Aspis Consortium, who made most of their money selling valuable antiquities across the border between Taldor and Qadira. Their daughters are known far and wide for their beauty, and marrying a Blakros woman is a sure path to power and riches.

Azura:

In the early days of Absalom, the Blakros Museum was originally the stronghold of an eccentric wizard. Abandoned for centuries, it was later bought by House Blakros, who turned it into a museum for their impressive collection of curiosities from across Golarion.

The mad astrologer Ralzeros the Overwatched built what is now the Blakros Museum thousands of years ago as an observatory to study distant worlds and even other planes of existence (and some say, to be studied by them). He later disappeared following a mage-duel with another of Absalom’s early wizards.

I need you all to place your icons on the map, and to take a moment to mark you initiative. I've also put the museum grounds on there.

"I'd rather do both. Not only to correct their greedy mistake, but to also save as many people as possible."

A wicked smile comes across Meredith's face. "I doubt fire will be the solution, but don't be bashful about wrecking some of their precious property if you have to save a life or two."

Hamaria Blakros stays remarkably stoic at the mention of the loss of her daughters, but does add let's hope you can indeed do both. She does so in a cold, not-amused way.

Great pillars of hewn black stone support the vaulted ceiling of the Blakros Museum’s grand entryway, visible through its wide, double doors. Braziers mounted on the pillars cast white radiance from balls of continual light. A fossilized dinosaur skeleton occupies the northwest corner of the room.

Upon crossing the threshold, the air ripples and all visible surfaces shimmer as if they were momentarily composed of still, reflective liquid. As soon as the effect manifests, the strange sensation ends, leaving thick shadows covering all surfaces. The white light of the braziers glows an arcane shade of blue, illuminating the shadowy form of a different skeleton that overlays the more solid dinosaur from moments ago.

A shadowy plaque on the southeast column declares the Shadow Plane version of the building to be “Wightir House, Experimental Laboratory of Onyx Alliance, Authorized by Order of Argrinyxia, the Shifting Lady of Ebony Scales.”

DC 15 K(planes):

The museum appears to be two places at once: one a museum on the material plane, the other a different building on the shadow plane, superimposed.

Azura seemed puzzled, she had been here before on multiple occasions, but the museum had never looked like this. "I am unsure, Master Feardwarf, this is unfamiliar to me as well. I have been here before, but I have never seen that sign... Take care, inanimate objects have a tendency to leap out at you suddenly in this place."

She drew her bow and cast detect magic as she moved slowly and quietly forward, giving the skeleton a wide berth as she looked around warily, scanning for magical auras.

What is the light level? Azura has Darkvision, but she can Light her wayfinder if it is too dim for the humans and half-elves to see.

Powerful magic indeed, but why did Lady Blakros wait until the eleventh hour to inform us? Could we not have simply left no sacrifices for the shadow-creatures? I think there may be some other motive here on her part--we should be cautious.

Zuriel advances slowly, bardiche held out defensively in front of him. He tries to keep pace with the others, but not follow so closely as to ruin their quiet approach.

The fighter pulls out his sword and board, just in case. He'd rather not fight and this place is already giving him the creeps. Also, as a precaution he watches behind the party, realizing that his stealth would probably also be horrendous and not wishing to impair the sneaky part of the party.

Agraic, fighting defensively just gives a -4, but thst natural 20 auto hits, so you can roll damage. Or did you mean total defense?

Mia reacts in time for a quick strike, but her open palm only hits a void. Agaric bashes his shield forward, and crushes a rib in the creature. Zuriel slashes, and cleaves a bone in the spine of the dino, sending bone splinters flying. From behind, a lilting, wordless song serves to alleviate the dark mood of the place.

Nevermind the flanking thing, I'll just correct the roll for the bonus

The dinosaur skeleton focuses its attacks on Agraic, burying him in a series of bites and claws. The warrior dodges and evades, until finally a talon manages to come through and draw blood.

The shield-bash was more effective than the half-elf thought it was going to be. He's a bit stunned by both his effectiveness and by the sudden onslaught of the skeletal thing, and that eventually catches up to him.

That talon definitely caused a grunt of pain, though he continues on his conservative approach... he seems to have the thing's attention and he can hold it for another flurry... hopefully.

Though... missing the thing wasn't really his goal. He winces and braces for the next onslaught...

Crit confirm, same modifiers but I will also use Destined Strike for +1 insight: 1d20 + 6 + 2 - 1 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 6 + 2 - 1 + 1 + 1 = 19

Damage, power attack, inspire courage: 1d10 + 4 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 3 + 1 = 18

It looks like according to the ACG you do not need to be in a bloodrage to use Destined Strike. Let me know if I'm wrong.

Time slows for Zuriel and he hears the slow beating of his own heart, the clanking of bones, and a faint song in the distance. But his thoughts aren't slowed and he sees the perfect place to strike, crushing the skeleton into powder.

Yes, though this place is a museum in our realm, I fear its purpose is more sinister here. Do you need aid? Zuriel inquires, looking at the gash on Agraic's arm. He draws a wand from his bag and hands it to Azura, stating quietly: Here, Miss, if one of us should fall...

Give my CLW wand to Azura for now. I'm assuming on the trip to the museum we discussed a little about our skills and abilities.

There's a long corridor, familiar to some. There's a door at the end, but first there's two doors, one leading east, one leading west.

A sign over the west door bearing bright lettering reads “Treasures of Distant Goka,” while a shadowy sign occupying the same space reads in dark, block letters “Cold Storage—Perishable Specimens Only.”

A large placard above the eastern entryway reads “The Evolution of Dragonkind” in bright, elaborate script while a shadowy sign next to the door describes the room as “Pain Laboratory—Tests in Progress.”

Zuriel nods in agreement. Yes, and we don't know how strongly tethered the two versions of the Museum are. I think we should leave undisturbed as much as we can. But Meredith is right--someone may be in danger in there right now he says gravely, pointing the blade of his weapon at the "Pain Laboratory".

He approaches cautiously, looking for any sign of traps on the door, then nods to the others and opens it. Unless I happen to find a trap, of course. ;-)

Azura ended her vocal performance as the skeleton sentinel falls. (I believe that was 2 rounds spent?)

She then pulled her wand as she moved to Agraic's side. She cast Cure light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7, bringing him back to full health. She nodded, satisfied with the effect and graciously accepted care of Zuriel's wand as well. Clearly, if anyone were to fall, it had better not be herself!

She joined in the discussion, her eyes flashing in alternating shades of deep, turbulent blue and bright cyan as she came to a realization. "Zuriel, you asked before why Hamaria waited til the eleventh hour... she could have hidden her daughters, sent them away or placed them under watchful guard. But that would be viewed as a breach of contract. She must fear the Onyx Alliances inevitable retaliation against her family. To prevent that, we must put an end to this Wightir House."

She signaled her readiness to proceed on to this "Pain Room".
