Horatio Flaxseed |
Horatio mulls that for a moment, then chuckles, "Perhaps secure is incorrect, at least when facing Halflings of our, hut hut, caliber, hmm?"
"But! To quote the wise progenitor of the Flaxseed Clan, 'the first step in avoiding a trap is knowing of its existence!' With the ruckus we've caused there is of course no hope of any sneaking whatsoever, but perhaps advancing with a bit fewer unnecessary headaches might be in our best interests, hmm?"
Yes, I know I quoted Thufir from Dune :P
Horatio will then - a rarity for him - dismount from Ferox and go down the ladder, letting Ferox jump down unencumbered after him.
Ferox Acrobatics: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (20) + 13 = 33 (DC 15 to ignore the first 10ft, 0 damage from jumps less than 10ft for remainder of the distance)
After Ferox puts on an impressive show, Horatio will re-mount, stowing his lance and drawing his enchanted Bec-de-Corbin, joining Devon at the trapped trapdoor.
Devon Callister |
Devon chuckles and again pats Horatio on the shoulder in an amicable manner. "Sure sure, past's the past and so forth. Truth be I expected some ordinary majinks, arrows or so, those I dodge like ya neva seen!"
He draws his pepperbox to his right hand, and his trusty pistol to another, both loaded and ready.
"So where's that wuss Brae-Hagen hiding? Surely down below. But with these stupid traps laying about, why don't ya go first?"
Druthane |
Druthane checks to make sure that everyone (especially Devon) is okay after that trapdoor opened. While giving him the once over the magus speaks up, "That was certainly less deadly than I expected. Devon, might I look at that pearl? I think it has powers within that you might not be able to harness without spell-casting ability..."

"Ouch. What was that evil force? Did not like it at all. Whiskers neither."
Celfwyn the Blind |
Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Folio Reroll: 1d20 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 2 + 4 = 16 Thank Desna for those GM stars!
Celfwyn manages to resist at least some of the effects of the triggered trap. "Blast it, Boomer! What'd you do that for?!" Celfwyn finishes his extracts (mentioned before), shakes his head, and follows the party down, trying to stay towards the back if he can.
Venture Teller Play b'Post |
Negative energy washes over the party, Horatio and Celfwyn are momentarily cold, but then, by some miracle, seem unaffected. Most of the pathfinders suffer no more than goosebumps running down their spines.
Wembly and Whiskers are not so lucky, and the energy draws upon their very being, draining them of their personal essence. Cha damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Also, reposting the description of this room since it was before the trap.
A 15-ft.-tall metal ladder occupies the center of this wide chamber, reaching to the cliff top above by means of a trapdoor. A second trapdoor is situated ten feet north of the ladder’s landing. Around the edges of this chamber are cots and makeshift beds, with uninteresting personal effects littered around.
A near-silent thud, followed by a ratcheting sounds, comes from below.

If ok to retcon wembly had not yet moved, i am fine. I did not have access to the map this morning so was not sure.
Wembly will dismount Whiskers and move closer to the trapdoor and ladder.

Celfwyn the Blind |
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

"Hmm, chilly," Devon chuckles, looking ready to jump through the next trap door. Others have showed keen interest in examining the door now though, so the halfling gunslinger is befuddled by the sudden interest and seems unusuably hesitant to run headlong to battle.
Venture Teller Play b'Post |
I seem to have missed something with that one... DC was 19 (14 was lower tier). Devon, Celfwyn, and Horatio suffer the effects of a Cha drain. Everyone make a perception check for each of the three please.
Drain: C: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5, D: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2,H: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
In the meantime the next trapdoor does not appear to be errr... well trapped.

Ferox sniffs the forehead of his rider, maybe even paws at it for a moment. He then sniffs at Wembly and the green cat's forehead. He excitedly paws his own forehead after the comparison and returns to Horatio showing affection like the bonded pair they are.
I think shall translate his communicating it as an aid bonus, Horatio can then see what his mount does and Druthane only misses it by one.
Eventually the whole party is made aware of some softly glowing runes on the foreheads of Celfwyn, Devon, and Horatio. Ferox seems disheartened that he is without one. The wolf is a little saddened that he was able to ride away from gaining such a rune.
The ratcheting sound from below continues.

Wembly watches as Ferox runs around, trying to
He shrugs.
"I guess that is why I am more of a cat person, hey Whiskers . Celfwyn. I agree, lets find the source of the noise at least."
Devon Callister |
Not seeing his own rune, Devon merely points at Celfwyn and Horatio, giggling. "Ya got marked, haha!"
Should Wembly and Whiskers have those runes too? Is this tied to the negative energy wave?
Haro はろ |
Haro pats the dog on the head, and says in his native speech, "Worry not furry friend. Vanity brings men to condemnation."
Venture Teller Play b'Post |
Celfwyn the Blind found no traps so the pathfinders open the next trapdoor.
Another 15-ft.-tall metal ladder leads from this room to the one below. The new room is much smaller so the ladder climbs up its north wall. Two trapdoors rest in the southwest and southeast corners of the chamber, whose walls and table are covered with maps. Two green-tinted glass windows, each roughly ten feet in diameter, look out to the canyon floor below.
Aye, the runes are related to the negative energy. Anyone else with spellcraft can make an attempt to identify their nature. Wembly & Whiskers were out of range of the trap, a mistake caught when I realized I should not be posting so so so late passed my bedtime. I could not even tell that 9<12! :P

Druthane |
Solid chance I'll be away from the desktop for much of the day (dissecting things in class today, so I won't have the freedom to check between classes.)
Druthane, feeling the pressure that each descent brings, concludes that the pathfinders are headed towards something big. He closes his eyes for a moment and takes stock of his magical and martial reserves. With a quick word to Desna he snaps his eyes open. His grip on Naishinto tightens and he lets some of those reserves mingle and coalesce. (He will refresh his enchantment on his blade. Furthermore he'll cast Mirror Image just before we descend the next set of trap doors. Considering how small these rooms are getting, she spell should last long enough.)
Extra Images: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Venture Teller Play b'Post |
I should clarify, spellcraft with detect magic would be needed. That takes three rounds. Since some have buffs running do you want to try to identify the rune? It has an aura of necromancy.
Three strange runes, two trapdoors down, two big round windows, handful of tables with maps & such, infinite number of character choices....
Wembly Templeton |
Wembly will cast detect magic checking anything in the room...runes, maps, tables, windows.
Devon Callister |
Devon waves his pieces like an idiot. "Whatcha waiting for! Oh, well, sure, Brae-Hagen the Evil Villain surely can't escape, demons don' build 'em escape routes, too proud fo' that sorta stuff!"
Devon rushes in the second someone says "ready", pepperbox and pistol drawn.

Nothing glows to the gnome's mage sight (except the pathfinders and the newly acquired runes). Although he notes on one map a report of a cavalry army decimating the armies south of Shilvershore with a note 'release the howlers!' The elf speaks some arcane words and multiple images of him appear. The excessive number of maps he has grabbed seems almost comical when multiplied this way.
Detecting no traps on either trapdoor, the Pathfinders prepare to drop one more level. Horatio, ever the valiant, leads the charge if someone is willing to open the door for him.
I believe Horatio is OK with that though we haven't seen him in a couple of days. I will retcon that if I am wrong. & he will have to dismount climb/jump remount. Sorry for railroading, but there really are only two choices left. Which trapdoor, and who opens it?
