Stirge Touch Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16, Attach: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
Stirge Touch Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18, Attach: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
Stirge Touch Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20, Attach: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
SPLAT!!! Grog vaporizes a stirge as it moves in. The other three stirges move into his square.
Ouch! The half-orc suffers 3 points of CON damage as the stirges drink deeply from his veins.
Sharien Oakfoot |
Grog, may I have your permission to move the fire sphere onto your square in hopes of burning away all of the stirges? I figure while they're attached to you, they're not going to get a Reflex save to avoid the damage.

ROUND 2
The mournful dirge continues.
Blackheath: 1d20 ⇒ 1, Blackheath is shaken.
Faria: 1d20 ⇒ 5, Faria is shaken.
Gravleon: 1d20 ⇒ 12, Gravleon is shaken.
Grog: 1d20 ⇒ 14, Success!
Sharien: 1d20 ⇒ 2, Sharien was already shaken. Now she is held fast, and cannot move. She is entranced by the music, but also experience a vision of the ghostly Piper himself as he approaches. (Only Sharien can see this.) And she cannot even scream.
Blackheath is playing the flute.
Blackheath: 1d20 ⇒ 5
Blackheath: 1d20 ⇒ 8
1d4 ⇒ 1
Blood continues running from the bard's eyes and ears and fingertips as Blackheath takes 1 more HP of damage.
The bard is occupied with playing the flute. The rest of the party is up!
Blackheath |
Blackheath struggles to play Careless Whisper on a flute.
Faria Quorothe |
Feeling that disabling the Piper is the priority, Faria again calls upon Pharasma, sending out another burst of holy energy to fill the area.
Channel Positive to Harm Undead: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 4) = 9
GM Engleaktig |
1d6 ⇒ 6
1d6 ⇒ 5
1d20 ⇒ 10
1d20 ⇒ 1
Nice! Faria just saved Sharien! What you guys didn't know was that each round of flute playing deals damage to the haunt. he flute dealt nearly max damage to the haunt and minimum damage to Blackheath. This was really the best-case outcome for this encounter.
With a shriek, the ghostly form of the piper dissipates. The stirges also leave, somewhat confused. They're mindless vermin. They don't know why they were called. And they just ate, so they don't feel the need to hang out. You can chase them down and kill them, if you like. There's no need to, though.
Combat (essentially) over!
Sharien Oakfoot |
Would the ghostly piper have done something horrible to me? Oh man, this module is so super creepy! I love it!
"I... I saw the piper. He was coming toward me... " Sharien bursts into tears at her near-Piper experience.
Blackheath |
If no one is too badly injured, maybe we should try to examine the rest of this level.
Perception to search area we just cleared: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Faria Quorothe |
Faria lets out a deep breath at the terrifying confrontation, placing a hand on Sharien's shoulder and smiling comfortingly. When everyone seemed to collect their wits, the priestess asks, "So do we want to continue exploring this top level, make sure there's no one else up here that needs to be dealt with?"
GM Engleaktig |
After catching their collective breaths and healing up (wand charges? spells? channels?) the party continues exploring this level.
T1: This guard area is blocked from the cellblock by an arc of iron bars. Within sits an old wooden table and a few chairs.
T2: Area where you fought the stirges.
T3: Privy
T4a: Once provided access somewhere, but has since crumbled.
T4b: A short hallway ending in a reinforced iron and wood door—unlike the other doors in Harrowstone, this particular door remains quite stout and locked. It leads out to the southwest balcony. (Area R6 where the animated scythe was. The other table dealt with it, so I'm removing it here.)
T5: Once a kitchen, this room is now nothing more than charred, blackened remains.
T6: More cells.
T7: Although this cell is rather spacious, it contains no concessions to comfort. A skeletal body dressed in the rotting remains of a prisoner's robe lies slumped against the eastern wall, wrapped in numerous chains on which are affixed numerous weights emblazoned with several different holy symbols. Somewhere, perhaps nearby, you can hear the soft jingle of chains being jostled.
Sharien Oakfoot |
I think only Blackheath and Grog took damage, and unfortunately Grog's damage was Con damage. Faria can fix that part, and then we can use some wand charges for Blackheath? Is that correct?
Sharien Oakfoot |
"Umm... Gravleon... do you feel something on your shoulder, perchance? Because I have caught glimpses of someone there..." Sharien shudders, still shaken up from seeing the Piper.
Blackheath |
Knowledge history: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Sharien Oakfoot |
"It looked like it was Father Charlatan... so perhaps we need to find out how to rid this place of his ghost as well. It might be time to consult that accursed planchette again...."
Faria Quorothe |
Walking up to Grog, Faria smiles gently as she calls upon the Lady of Graves for her blessing, trying to help the half-orc recover from the grievous wounds the stirges inflicted.
Lesser Restoration: 1d4 ⇒ 3All your Con back, Grog! :)
"If we can figure out which item belonged to him, perhaps we might not need to consult the planchette, sister."
Blackheath |
"Do we wish to return to the manor and commune with the planchette, or should we keep investigating here?"
Faria Quorothe |
Faria ponders Blackheath's question a moment, then answers with conviction, "Let us stay and cleanse some more of the taint of this place. I shall take the Charlatan's Holy Symbols, and present them should his ghostly remnants show up. Perhaps if we remove a couple of the spirits the others will regroup and take less action outside of Harrowstone."
Faria Quorothe |
Faria thinks over the areas they have explored, then offers, "That prisoner kept in the southern chamber with the holy symbols on his chains. I would venture a guess that is Father Charlatan. Let us go see what clues his remains offer to us."
If no one objects, she will continue to hold the Holy Symbols while moving towards the cell.

This corner cell was Father Charlatan's final home before his death from smoke inhalation. Of the five key prisoners, Father Charlatan’s crimes were the least heinous, and thus he was imprisoned not in the dungeons below but here, in this relatively spacious cell. Yet the power of the churches he blasphemed against was strong, and as a concession toward that power, Father Charlatan was bound in heavy chains decorated with the symbols of the faiths he sinned against.
Blackheath |
"Fear not, Gravleon, if you become fully possessed and attack us, we will focus on maiming you instead of killing you... Unless things get out of hand, of course."
Faria Quorothe |
Faria gives Blackheath an odd look at his words to Gravleon, looking a bit confused. Before they leave, she takes a vial of holy water over to Father Charlatan's bones and dispenses the holy water onto his remains, saying a quick prayer to the Lady of Graves to grant the man his release to whatever heaven or hell he had in store for him.
PFS CORE-G Sangre |
"no, although I feel his spirit close now I do not thin....." gravleon cuts off mid sentence as get falls to the floor
GM Engleaktig |
Gravleon's eyes flutter. He sees a wide open sky above him. The warmth of the sun shines on his face. It's nice and warm, but not burning hot. A being of indescribable beauty appears next to him and smiles.
"Welcome home, brother," it says. "The Healing Flame thanks you for your service. This," it gestures to the pastoral setting all around, "is your reward."
Gravleon: 1d20 ⇒ 6
1d6 ⇒ 2
Back in Harrowstone prison, Gravleon's body jerks and contorts as though he feels torturous pain. Ghostly chains decorated with numerous holy symbols begin draping themselves over his prone body...
The party is up, including Gravleon. The cleric of Sarenrae can only interact with the being speaking to him.
Sharien Oakfoot |
"Gravleon!" Sharien rushes to his side to try to determine what happened to him.
Kn.religion?: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

PFS CORE-G Sangre |
Gravleon looks around taking in the splendor before him
"have i gone home it...its so beautiful here, oh who is that my guide" he thought
"tell me what is this place, how did i get here....what it that..." Gravleon spoke indicating the pedestal
Knowledge religion : 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Blackheath |
For want of anything clever to do, Blackheath begins a bardic performance to inspire courage in his friends.
Not sure if it will reach Gravleon as the ally "must be able to perceive the performance" and I don't know if it he needs a +1 to saves vs Fear and Charm effects, but it seemed like a Bardly thing to try.
Faria Quorothe |
Faria presents the charlatan's holy symbols to the chains beginning to drape over Gravleon. If that does not appear to do anything, she will bend down and physically touch the holy symbols to the chains encircling Gravleon, a look of desperation on her face.
GM Engleaktig |
"You have died, brother." The being smiles. Gravleon's eyes are gradually able to focus. He realizes that he's lying in a coffin. The man next to him his a handsome, red-haired human, roughly the same age. This stranger wears a holy symbol of Sarenrae around his neck. His eyes are patient and kind.
"You died some months ago. Your companions have moved on, and the Dawn Flower has deemed that it is finally your time to move on, too. Rest easy friend, and enjoy the rewards of your selflessness."
Gravleon: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
At these words, Gravleon has a "flashback" of his "death." He can see his companions around him. Faria is holding a set of holy symbols against his body. Blackheath is trying to inspire the group. Sharien is studying your face, but you've seen the look of confusion she wears before; she doesn't know how to help you.
1d6 ⇒ 2
Thing: 2
Suddenly, the flashback stops, and you're back in a beautiful verdant setting. The red-haired man stands and offers you his hand: "Let's get you out of that coffin, shall we?"
