More than 400 years have transpired since the Pathfinder Society began in a humble tavern that has quietly weathered the centuries without incident. When a routine errand there uncovers a clue left behind by one of the founding Pathfinders, it’s up to the PCs to solve a puzzle whose pieces are scattered across Absalom—and whose prize dates back to the Society’s darkest years.

Dot!

It is mid-morning when the messenger approaches you. "Venture-Captain Dreng requests your presence - please convene in meeting room 12." Even those of you who are still Initiates undergoing final training have heard of Drandle Dreng before. Stories of his midnight summons, and the convoluted adventures which spring from them, have attained near-mythic status in the Society. The idea that he has summoned you to a meeting during regular working hours strikes you as... odd. Perhaps it is due to your junior status within the organization.

As you head through the gates of the Grand Lodge, you cannot help but be impressed by the Society's home base. The imposing tower of Skyreach dominates the view, its upper levels supposedly where the masked Decemvirate charts the organization's course. Training areas, classrooms, and residences dot the rest of the campus, but your eye is drawn towards a lush forest growing against the western wall. Within those centuries-old trees stands the Wall of Names - the place where fallen Pathfinders are memorialized. It is perhaps telling that the wall was built on such a scale, and even after four hundred years, there is still plenty of blank space on the wall for incautious Pathfinders.

Arriving at Skyreach, you are ushered in to a well-appointed meeting room to wait for the Venture-Captain. Around you are five other individuals of varying descriptions.

Go ahead and post a description of your character, and feel free to introduce yourselves in-character. We will start Monday morning.

A strikingly attractive woman smiles at the other pathfinders present.

"I'm Fargrim. Fargrim Arikfind. You may have heard of me? Oh, no? Oh well, never mind. I've helped out on a couple of missions since my confirmation. My speciality is people, I love working with people, and trying to work out what is going on behind their eyes."

While human at first glance, there is obviously a touch of the divine about Fargrimn, her beauty is just not quite natural. Then again, she does wear a small symbol of Desna at her neck.

A somewhat aloof gentleman looks up from a book he is reading. With a sigh he makes a few quick notes in the margins before tucking it inside the pocket of his cloak. He bows before Fargrim as she introduces herself. "No time to dally…presumably we have eleven doors to walk by before arriving at our destination."

Standing an impressive seven feet tall, a bit above average even for his large race, Silas grumbles as he ducks his scaled head to avoid brushing the top of the doorway. "Wish the Lady saw fit to send me to places where the doors are taller." His hexagonal-plated armor and the steel shield on his back make a good deal of noise with every step, and the iron holy symbol of Iomedae clangs against his chest as though it doesn't want to be ignored. He had chosen this symbol carefully. Wood rots, he likes to say. Silver tarnishes. Iron endures.

Lyoto looks around the interior of the Grand Lodge, he is stunned by the grandeur of the place. He thought back to the days when he was just another guy fighting for the amusement of drunkards. He felt a sense of pride swell in him, but also a little nervous that he would be accepted by people with such high status.

"Oh well I better introduce myself," Lyoto thought. "Here goes nothing."

"Hi everyone," Lyoto says in his raspy repilian voice. "My name is Lyoto."

Fargrim smiles at the pair of Nagaji.

"Hello Lyoto and Silent-One. I am Fargrim. I wonder what Dreng wants of us?" she does appear a little nervous. "I hope they didn't find any problem with my chronicle about the Kotos cave system."

Looking out the window, she takes in the sights along with Lyoto.
"It is grand, is it not."

As her gaze crosses the wall of names she seems to deflate a little. "Let us hope we don't end up there any time soon. There is little beauty in death."

Lyoto looks at Fargrim, astonished by her beauty, yet something in her eyes told him she had a great deal of inner resolve. Lyoto had stared down enormous half-orcs in the fighting pits and laughed. But he knew this woman was not someone who should be trifled with.

"Vasilios", grunts the hulking Half Elf, a large sword strapped to his back, a leather vest around his upper torso, casually open, with dark pants on his lower half.

Vasilios looks curiously at the Nagaji, his dark eyes analysing them, having had no experience with the race before. After a long pause, he looks away, making no comment.

The door opens again, and a tall dhampir with piercing grey eyes enters the room. You recognize him as one of the Pathfinders who work within the Grand Lodge.

"Please excuse the intrusion," he begins, in a thick Galtan accent. "I am Gereard Dessedeux, and I come with a message for you from Venture-Captain Dreng. He is unable to attend you at the Grand Lodge, and requests that you meet him at on the street across from the Grog Pit, a tavern in the Docks district. He requests that you come ready to work for the next several hours, and that you won't be leaving the city." He nods once, then turns and exits the room.

Lyoto looks the other members of his team who all seem to have a much grander looking appearance than himself. He is unarmed and unarmored not counting the barbed vest he bought for a bit of extra protection to compliment his natural scaliness.

However, he has several weapons hanging from his belt including a temple sword, a metal nunchaku, and 10 javelins. The remainder of his possession are in a sack that he has slung over his shoulder.

Lyoto asks the group. "Are we ready for this?"

"Actually I don't think we've ever met unless he's been to watch one of my fights."

Lyoto's eyes widen when he looks over at Silas' gleaming plated armor and shield.

"If I'm being honest, I've never seen a Nagaji who looked so grand."

Lyoto realizes his own appearance is pretty ragged by comparison as he has nearly everything he owns tucked in a sash or stuffed in a sack, so he decides to change the subject.

"So uh, what is the Grog Pit? I don't think I ever heard of it."

Henry:
The Grog Pit is the most notorious and dangerous tavern and flophouse in the Docks district of Absalom. ON average, one third of the patrons are either cutpurses or con artists. However the grog is cheap (any coin of any nation gets you a large mug full), the virtue of the serving girls and busboys is up for rent, and anyone who buys a mug can sleep off its effects in the main hall for free.

He smiles at Fargrim. The girl is beautiful, no doubt about that-- almost unnaturally so. I will be temperate in my actions and moderate in my behavior, he reminds himself. Of course he would protect her, as lightly armored as she is-- but nothing more. To play favorites would go against his training.

He glances at Lyoto. Silas hadn't seen any other nagaji in Absalom until now, and in truth the two could hardly be more different. Silas gleams in metal armor; Lyoto seems to rely solely on his own scales. However, Lyoto sports an impressive array of weapons, long and short, piercing and slashing. Silas has only two: his longsword and his bow, and the latter only for certain occasions. The sword is enough, his Order always says. Her weapon is your weapon. "Don't think I have, but I'm sure you can handle yourself." He says nothing to Lyoto's compliment.

"I mostly fought in hand to hand combat where the loser was just knocked unconscious, though I trained in a variety of weapons so I could compete in the special gladiator events. I'm not particularly in love with it, I just happened to have a knack for it."

"We'll be fine," he assures Henry. "Remember: If you bring the light to those already in the light, what use is it to them? Bring the light to those in darkness. The people in places like that are the ones who most need to see people like us."

It is raining as you leave the Grand Lodge, and the downpours worsens as you head towards the Docks district. You easily find the Grog Pit, picking up whatever supplies you may need along the way. As you crosses the street to enter, one of Absalom's ubiquitous beggars approaches. Filthy and smelling slightly of overripe cabbage, the old man shuffles towards you. "Spare a coin, my fine folk?" he asks, with a twinkle in his eye that belies the rest of his appearance. He then pulls back his filthy hood and hair, and you recognize Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng.

“Sorry about my little joke,” Dreng says with a wink. “I always like to see who's paying attention when I see agents in the field. Now, why did I summon you fine folk here again…?” Dreng shakes his head from side to side, as though trying to knock water out of his ears, despite the constant downpour.

“Ah yes, the Wounded Wisp! I’m undercover now, and can’t stray far from the site I’m watching, but I need someone to retrieve a package for me from that fine establishment. It’s among Absalom’s most storied taverns, you see, and one that holds a special place of privilege in the Society’s lore as the place where the organization began. Well, I could drone on and on about it, but standing out in the rain is doing none of us any favors.”

As if anticipating agreement, the bedraggled venture-captain produces a small slip of folded paper from one of his many stitched pockets. Dreng quickly shows a glimpse of the page’s contents: a map detailing the location of the Wounded Wisp.

“The bartender is a woman by the name of Heryn Gale, a fine lady who came to own the Wisp after the passing of her father from—oh, bah, it’s really getting too cold for me to give a proper history lesson! If you could just go to the Wisp, and tell Heryn you’re there to pick up my parcel, it would be most appreciated. I’ll be around here for several more hours at least.”

You all recall some basic information about the Wounded Wisp. Alas, none of you have any training in history, so you are going on generalities and hearsay...

The Wounded Wisp was a bar once frequented by the original members of the Pathfinder Society before the Society was even formed. Inside the Wisp, acquaintances would share stories about their adventurous exploits with one another.

Henry was surprised by the VC's disguisement. So good that he had a thought about the Lion's Blade of Taldor. He could have been in the Lions !

But Lyoto doesn't want to sound like an idiot or question a venture captain on his first mission, so he keeps the thought to himself.

Silas had just reached a scaled hand back for his coinpurse when the Venture Captain reveals himself. "Well," he says when Dreng finishes, "let's not hang around, then. Might blow your cover, talking to us for too long." Silas had made no attempt to disguise himself, not having been given a good reason to, but does not dispute the occasional usefulness of such an approach. The sort of beggar Dreng is impersonating might look suspicious talking to this sort of group, especially when, as diverse as they are, it probably wouldn't be hard to guess that they're Pathfinders.

(Partly so I could give you all a place to introduce yourself while I set up three tables of games... this scenario doesn't really lend itself to a typical PbP introduction scene.)

Dreng turns to Henry. "Before you judge... despite my current attire, I’m still a man of taste. The parcel is actually... a special vintage, of wine from the cellar of the Wounded Wisp. I’ve been sampling their finer wines in descending order of bottling. I dare not disappear from my current role in this district, but I also would appreciate some comfort items. After all, I doubt anyone would judge a supposed beggar sipping from a bottle of wine."

Built from dark, discolored wood, the exterior of the Wounded Wisp is the image of an iconic dive bar. Stained and barred windows obscure direct vision into the establishment, though ruddy yellow light bleeds from a window in the front hall. The only distinguishing feature on the Wisp’s exterior is a thick wooden sign hanging from above the bar’s entrance. A brass ring fitted onto the sign anchors a lantern—referred to by the staff as “the wisp”.

This long entrance hall heads north into the building itself. The walls are covered in numerous decorations and trophies left by successful Pathfinders who have donated minor paraphernalia to the bar.

The smell of smoke and spilled ale assails the senses in this wide-open area. Walls of dark-stained wood make up the sides of the Wounded Wisp, while well-used wooden tables are spread throughout the space. A raised area in the back of the establishment houses several additional tables and eating areas for groups seeking more than just a good drink. An austere bar supported by kegs instead of wooden panels commands the northern end of the room. A stained-glass cabinet stands behind the bar, its dark panes cracked in several spots, yet not so opaque as to conceal the several dozen types of hard liquor within.
