Numenera - The Nightmare Switch (Inactive)

Game Master Zizazat

A short adventure set in Seshar in the Beyond.

1 to 50 of 54 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

I am looking for 4 players who are interested in a Play by Post game, in which I will run The Nightmare Switch under the Numenera rule system.

This will be my first time running something under the Cypher system, and The Nightmare Switch is a short adventure written by Monte Cook basically for convention demos and the like.

I will be accepting characters through Sunday evening (Eastern time), at which time I will select the four which I find the most interesting. You do not have to worry about connections, we will handle that after selection is complete. You do not have to have a huge background. I am not looking for the most min/max builds either. Numenera is a game about exploration, not combat. You do not earn XP for fighting things.

I have the Core Rulebook, and I will need all characters created to come only from that source (or from the Player's Guide). I know there are lots of interesting glimmers that have been published etc, but I do not have any of them so I will be limiting this to the resources I have.

It is entirely possible that these characters will continue to explore the Ninth World after we complete The Nightmare Switch.

What you need to know is you are in an area of the Beyond known as Seshar. It is a dry desert crisscrossed with artificial waterways created in days long past. You have hired on with a man named Deymish as a hired hand or guard (1 shin/day or 3 shins/day) to help him move (or protect) cargo he is transporting via his boat from Quintas to Redstone along the canals. There is a growing presence of abhuman Margr raiders in the region which has Deymish looking for additional support for this growing merchant endeavors.

My expectations of players are pretty straightforward. Post once a day, more if possible. Do not be overly antagonistic of other players or characters. Let me know if you are going to be away for a few days or more.

I am happy to answer additional questions.

Dotting for interest!

I was just thinking a couple of hours ago it would be cool try this system.

I'll read the character creation in my copy of core and think of something. :)

Interested! :)

Will dig into the book and see what can come up with...

Dotting for interest.

I take a look at the books and see what I can come up with.

Dot dash dot.

EDIT: How would you handle the focus, Howls at the Moon?

Nohwear wrote:

Honestly, I would probably pick another submission. It seems to provide almost nothing on the upside, with a pretty huge downside. While other characters are out doing interesting things, you are just waiting to transform into something that is going to try and kill them? Pass.

Very interested.

Cooking up a mechanical nano who explores dark places.

Leaning towards a tough glaive that fuses flesh and steel.

I'm going to revisit the setting a bit and work on a suitable background.

I am thinking of a nano that is basically a druid. Do you see wilderness survival skills being of much use?

This adventure uses a mix of urban and wilderness locations.

Submitting a Graceful Glaive Who Fuses Flesh and Steel

Spoiler:
Stats: Might:16 edge 1 Speed:18 edge 1 Intellect:8 edge 0
Skills: Trained: Jumping, Balancing, Careful Movement, Speed Defense, Physical Performing Arts.
Drawbacks: Special Healing: Due to my semi Mechanical Nature, the first 5 points of damage I take cannot be healed naturally and must be repaired.
Armor: 3(1 Implants 2 Brigandine)Effort:1
Fighting Moves: Bash(1 Might) Thrust(1 Might)
Gear: Heavy Blade(Sword-staff), Medium Ranged(bow), Medium Armor(Brigandine), Clothing, Explorers Pack, Bag of light Tools, Spare Parts 2 cyphers, 1 oddity, 12 arrows, 5 shins.

Appearance/Personality:Sirona is a tall wiry man with dark brow hair and silver eyes; his left arm is made of a interlocking panels of pale green metal; a fact that he conceals by wearing long sleeves and a glove on his left hand. The rest of his body is covered in faint etched circuitry(which he passes off as tattoos when asked)these patters also sometimes glow faintly green for no apparent reason.
Sirona is cheerful and outgoing, though he can sometimes be a bit impulsive he answers questions about himself and his past with a laugh and a change of subject; and if pressed, a ridiculous, yet not completely implausible lie.
Backstory:
Spoiler:
In truth Sirona doesn't remember his past He woke up in a recently deserted campsite with his armor and weapons, an oddity, the purpose of which he has yet to discover, and a cryptic note, reading "He Will Rise" he has no idea who "he" is or whether "his" rising will be a good or bad thing; mostly he ignores it. Since then Sirona has been working as a mercenary and soldier of fortune along the canals of Seshar.

Note:I am willing to change aspects of the backstory to better fit with the story. Most of the mysteries are just plot hooks, for now, if its relevant I can come up with something later. I have experience with Numenera but not the play by post format, but it shouldn't take me too long to pick it up if i'm chosen.

Thanks Nathan, I will check it over and let you know if I have any additional questions!

I'd like to submit a charming jack who commands mental powers. I've never played Numenera but am very curious about it. Let me know if you need me to flesh out something more.

The character concept is a cross between a Bene Gesserit witch from Dune, and Goldmund, from Herman Hesse's novel.

Tania Teg:

Stats: Might:12 edge 1 Speed:12 edge 0 Intellect:14+1 (crystal) edge 0
Skills:
Trained in all tasks involving positive or pleasant social interaction
Trained when using esoteries or abilities that influence the minds of others
Inability at studying or retaining facts
Inability at resisting mental attacks
Training in one task of your choosing (not attack/defense): Geography.
Trained in Mind Control esotery (if you have it)
Trained in Mind Reading esotery (if you have it)

Abilities:
Practiced With Light and Medium Weapons
Flex Skill (At the beginning of each day, choose one task (other than attacks or defense) on which you will concentrate. For the rest of that day, you’re trained in that task.)
Tricks of the Trade (2): Skill With Defense (Intellect), Trained Without Armour.
Telepathic

Equipment:
Clothing
Two weapons
Light Armour
An explorer's pack
A pack of light tools
Two cyphers (chosen for you by the GM)
One oddity (chosen for you by the GM)
Psionic Crystal/Jewel artifact. +1 Int when worn, -5 Int when without it

Effort:1

Notes:
Contact: you have an important contact in a influential position.
One other PC is immune to your psychic bursts and you can communicate with them over short range
You have 18 shins to spend.
You can bear up to 2 cyphers.

Appearance/Personality:
With long straight hair of brown and crimson, Tania Teg has a pretty chiseled face, anchored on eyes of mystical green. Her golden skin and green eyes betray her Steadfast heritage, yet her straight hair betrays some contributions from the Beyond. She stands tall and graceful, with an athletic build clearly showing under the simple, but well kept, dark gray traveler’s garment she wears. A careful look at her will let show a fire and a passion in her eyes that can only be fueled by some higher purpose.

Her voice has a clearness that reminds one of the spring winds whistling through the fledgling new leaves announcing a glorious summer. Her movements are sensual, yet powerful and precise, showing an awareness and a cultivation of ones graces, talents and attractiveness.

Background:
Tania has spent her recent life on the road, looking for odd jobs. A year ago, she's left the orphanage she was sold or brought to as a toddler. The nuns there did her best to infuse her with sense and the skills to live a peaceful and quiet life, but her taste for discovery and all things human has proven too much and she was asked to leave. For a while at least...

Interest declared!
I have a glaive created from an earlier aborted campaign, but I'll take another look at the rule book....

hmmm... As this game is a spiritual successor to Gamma World, I'm thinking of a Mutant Jack who Hunts With Great Skill. Let's see what I get before I go into more details.

harmful mutation: 1d100 ⇒ 18 18 - deformed face
beneficial mutation 1: 1d100 ⇒ 29 29 - thick hide
beneficial mutation 2: 1d100 ⇒ 79 79 - psychic resistance
beneficial mutation 3: 1d100 ⇒ 81 81 - acid resistance
distinctive mutation 1: 1d100 ⇒ 75 75 - snake tail +beneficial
distinctive mutation 2: 1d100 ⇒ 14 14 - tendril fingers + beneficial
distinctive mutation 3: 1d100 ⇒ 41 41 - carapace
distinctive mutation 4: 1d100 ⇒ 47 47 - chlorphyll

Duplicate rerolls and granted rerolls:

reroll 1: 1d100 ⇒ 64 bene 47 - suggestive voice
reroll 2: 1d100 ⇒ 54 bene 64 - disease immunity
reroll 3: 1d100 ⇒ 56
reroll 4: 1d100 ⇒ 50
reroll 5: 1d100 ⇒ 89
reroll 6: 1d100 ⇒ 62

hmmm... Obviously I'm a mutated plant. A vine creature with thick, woody plates. People are weirded out by my headlessness, but my musical voice offsets that to some extent.

Hi Spazmodeus, I was in that game as well :)

Is that focus in the main book? I could have sworn it is from a supplement.

Dark Archive

"Murders" Page 70 Core book. Also, I don't want to wear armor, so could I replace that with another piece of basic gear such as lockpicks

RPG Superstar 2013 Top 4

Profile is complete with backstory.

Thanks Servae! I do not have a problem trading in the armor for other gear, but the light tool bag already contains a lockpick. Do you want an additional lockpick or something else? I will give you the armor equivalent of 3 shins to spend (or keep) as you see fit for the armor.

Philo Pharynx where is the mutant descriptor coming from? I do not see it in the Core book. EDIT: Core Rulebook, pg. 123. Thanks Pedro!

I believe the mutant descriptor is in the optional rules chapter, right after Varjellan and Lattimor.

I am interested
I would want to make Thundar the Barbarian type character.
I have the books but haven't looked at them since I first scanned the core book when I got the kickstarter
So I would be a strong glaive that ?

RPG Superstar 2013 Top 4

...that rages?

A rugged glaive that masters weaponry wouldn't be a bad approximation either.

Still interested, just without time to read the rulebook;

I'll work in a character tomorrow. :)

No problem Aku (and others who are interested). The deadline is Sunday evening and I will be making my selections and announcing the party after that.

Okay, here's Gr'Grunter, a Mutant Jack who Lives in the Wilderness.

Appearance:
Gr'Grunter is a mockingvine, a semi-carnivrous plant creature. They aren't normally sapient, though they are clever. Their name comes from their skill at mimicking animal noises to lure them into ambushes. Mockingvines have a long thick vine on one end that they use for climbing, moving and grappling. The middle is covered in tough barkplike plates and opens up to a chamber of mild acid that they use to digest their meals. The other end has many smaller vines capable of manipulation. Instead of eyes, they have a number of photsenstiive patches that together give a similar view. Stretched out, their overall length is about 3.5 meters.

Gr'grunter is odd in that he wears reptile hides over his torso. A crossbow is strapped to him and he has a chain of amber-colored stronglass. He wears a pack as weel, so this tool use seems to be more extensive than most.

History:
From the vibration-crystals of Soo Niyi Karth

So you will give me this strange device simply to talk with you wearing your crystal? Odd behavior, even for an animal. And yet, I benefit from your madness, therefore it is not mad.

Your question is meaningless.

Because you animals do not understand time correctly. It is part of what makes you an animal.

It is simple. Time is the record of changes. And therefore time exists only when something changes. In between there is no time. I believe this frightens animals and so they keep active to change things and make more time.

Perhaps this will make this clear. After Sun went down, I hunted. I found a perch and then a fourbuck came by. I gave a mating cry and it came closer. I killed it, cut off the horns and hooves and hide and meat and put the head in my drinking chamber. Then Sun returned. Between each event there was no time.

It is what I do. Others will trade for parts of my kills. They are useful.

My drinking hole? Let me show you.

It is where my hungry water eats my kills. It turns them into water and I drink it. See how only the skull of the fourbuck is left? It is quite clean and the bone collectors will buy it.

Sun does not shine at night. Storms scare it away. Drinking sustains me when there is no Sun. As well, there is flavor. Especially the heads. Animals have tasty heads.

No, I understand that the animals that are people grow upset at such behavior. I forgo this flavor to avoid the consequences of their misunderstanding.

They believe that they are not like other animals.

I was not always like this. My kind hunts by calling out to those around them. We recognize what we see in order to know what to call. Giving a scyther mating call to a fourbuck will make it run, but the scyther will come to a fourbuck call. But the calls of people were complex. Imitating them was not successful, so one could only hunt them by stealth.

At one point I found a person that was injured. It could only move it's arms and head. It was fighting off a pack of scrath. It had a blade of light that it used to keep them at bay. I waited until the light flickered, then drove off the scrath to feed myself. It made it's strange people-cries and fumbled for it's stuff. It found a small disk that stuck to me. It didn't hurt, so I ignored it and fed. It fell apart a small while later.

Not long after I began understanding the people-calls. Instead of hunting, I would go listening. I understood more. When I finally knew enough to call to one, she reacted strangely. She was curious but cautious. She expressed surprise about a "smart mockingvine", but soon we would talk. I learned much. She had the skins of one of my kills and I asked. She explained how people interact and commerce. As a trader she would give these thing to others in exchange for items. I had never needed tools. But she showed me them. It explained how other people were able to kill my kind from a distance.

I enjoyed these calls and understanding. I had fed recently, so I enjoyed it more thank drinking them. I hunted for her and she gave me items. I became her Great Green Hunter, and that became my name.

I feel silly for just now thinking of this, but do you want me to pick an existing beast for my pet, or just make something up?

@Nohwear - roll a d100 and we can use the random table from the Bestiary.

Eptin

A Mystical Nano who Controls Beasts

Might: 9 Edge: 0
Speed: 10 Edge: 0
Intellect: 17 Edge: 1
Effort: 1
Tier: 1
Cyphers: 3

Practiced with light weapon

Numenerea training

Equipment: clothing, Sisk, three cyphers, two oddities, book about numenera, 4 shins, three days beast food, collar, harness, similar stuff

Esoteries: Onslaught, Hedge Magic, Push

Skill: Numenera trained (Expert?)

Sense "magic"

Inability: charm, persuasion, deception

Connection: (character) upsets pet

Beast companion form: 1d100 ⇒ 73
Level: 2
TN: 6
Health: 6
Damage: 2

Background: Elevated by the Guild of the Perfect Rose, Eptin was implanted by a semi intelligent "rose" vine. During his travel he has acquired other plant and mold based implants. He has learn to use the spores to control beasts. The vine guides him and grant him most of his magic. Since expanding his collection the vine seems to be spending most of its time coordinating his various symbiots.

Notes: If chosen I will make a new alias and better organize my sheet. Or will that hurt my chances?

Thanks Nohwear, I will check it over and let you know if I have any additional questions! It looks like your companion is a shanu. I will ask the selected players to create profiles, but that does not need to happen prior to selection. We will standardize on a simple, readable character sheet as well.

Shanu:
Shanu are tiny, meek, and innocuous herbivores that tend to live in trees and amid rocks—anywhere they can hide or quickly climb out of harm’s way. However, they are also found in the company of humans and other creatures because they make excellent companions and pets.
“As lucky as a shanu” is a common phrase, but it’s a misappropriation. Many people believe that shanu manipulate probability. This isn’t the case, but shanu can help chosen allies that they hope will defend them against aggressors.
Shanu can be trained to follow a variety of commands. Their front paws are almost human and can grip small objects. They are excellent climbers and have particularly sharp senses. It’s not uncommon to see them perched on the shoulder of another creature.

As much as I would like to try Numenera, I think my plate is just too full at the moment. I'm bowing out.

Happy gaming!

GM, I don't suppose you are willing to go with six?

Dreaming Warforged, thanks for letting me know.

Nohwear, as this is also my first time GM'ing the system I would rather keep it to four.

I got bogged down with other things and ended up not having time to think of anything.

Because of that, I'm bowing out.
Thanks for the opportunity GM.
