I am looking for 4-6 players for a game that will be placed in Midgard setting, by Kobold Press/Open Design.

Character creation rules:

1) 4d6 drop the lowest 8 times, choose 6 best.
2) Races and Classes allowed are: Everything Paizo and Kobold Press/Open Design, except Summoner and Gearforged and four-legged races, such as Centaurs. Rangers are allowed, but I encourage you to play Spell-less Ranger by Open Design.
3) Two traits at character creation. Traits can be chosen from any Paizo source.
4) All characters start with a bonus feat, in addition to all other feats they would get from race, class or other sources.

I'm thinking Sea Reaver archetype. Stats come out to 17, 15, 15, 12, 11 and 9.

The game will not be set anywhere near the sea, so I don't really think that you'll get much out of that archetype.

I will most probably set the game around Zobeck and Margraeve.

What starting level and will I need the books? With Christmas coming on I don't have any spare cash. And speaking of cash, what's the starting amount for gear and such?

Character Concept, Dwarven Fighter

I'll look at the midgard setting tonight to set up a bit more background
Summary, As with dwarves they are fond of drink, well Aragoth, was moreso. Which tends to get him in a bit o' trouble. Aragoth was a fighter from the start, though usually taking a beating more than dishing out. Eventually he joined up with the Dwarven militia, which assigned him caravan guard. More than once drinking screwed that up for him though. The king left a threat of leaving him deserted outside of the Fortress if he screwed up again before he left for another trade.
This route out, he seemed careless though the trade was boring and he was unneeded, going out to the tavern he let himself go. Morning came and he awoke in a completely unfamiliar part of town. It was already to late in the day, the caravan had surely set out leaving him in the town to set home on his own, or search for a new job to support his sickness. Course he chose the latter of the two. The thought in the back of his mind, maybe he needed to prove himself to his Dwarven brothers and this was the start.
I'v got an excel of my character, let me know what you think, if he gets chosen I'll make up the alias.

I just got into a Midgard game so won't be applying, but as a huge Midgard fan, I will watch the recruitment and gameplay to see what you guys come up with.

For those of you unfamiliar with the setting, I highly recommend the Player's Guide to the Crossroads. It covers the area where it sounds like Nightflier is setting his game and it is only $4.99. You won't regret this purchase. It is chock full of information and new player options.

Here is the fluff for my character. I can give you the crunch now if you need it or later once we begin character creation.

Character Application:

"In the shadows no one can see your pain."

Name: Vesper (not her real name…this was the name given to her by the ‘Boss’, only she remembers her true name.)
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Class: Shadowsworn (From the Player's guide to the Crossroads)

Appearance:
Appearance: Vesper stands 5’4” and has a slim willowy figure which makes her look younger than her nineteen years of age. Her hair is a rich dark ebony color, shoulder length, and often done up in an elaborate braid. Her eyes are a deep and piercing green that can go cold with a light that cuts right through a man’s soul. Vesper moves through a room with the grace of a dancer, seemingly floating more than walking. She wears knee high black boots and usually dark colored clothing. These dark colors just highlight the moonlight paleness of her skin and the light dusting of freckles across her nose and cheeks. The only thing marring her obvious good looks is a nose that seems to have been broken at one point and not set quite right leaving it slightly bent to the left. Vesper also has a tattoo of a rose entwined around a dagger at the base of her neck running down between her shoulder blades.

Background Info:
Background: Vesper’s parents were destitute. Their once proud family had fallen on hard times and out of favor with the House of Thrune. One day a man who only called himself “The Boss” showed up at the door of their hovel. This brutish thug offered the family what seemed to them a small fortune to purchase their young daughter. With more mouths than they could feed, Vesper’s parents shut their ears to their daughter’s crying and took the money.

Vesper was shocked at first with what the Boss asked her to do, but the swine of a man made it clear that she didn’t have much choice in the matter; either do what he was demanding or die. From that day forward Vesper was trapped working for the Boss as a prostitute in one of the many brothels that he ran. She was one of the Boss’s most popular girls, being pretty and very young looking, appealing to many of the Boss’s clientele.

Every night that she had to take a customer Vesper felt a little bit more of her heart and soul dying. Every one of these men seemed to steal something from her when they forced her to do the things they wanted. This went on for seven long years as the young girl’s soul died and her heart became cold as a stone in winter. Vesper would lie there letting the men do what they wanted all while shutting her mind to what was happening to her body and dreaming of a world where this kind of evil did not exist. This survival skill of focused distancing of her mind has honed her ability to concentrate on one thing and ignore all others.

Finally, one night the green eyed beauty simply refused to take another customer. The Boss screamed and swore at her and when that did nothing he swung his fist, smashing Vesper right in the face. The young girl heard her nose crunch and found herself sitting against the far wall. Vesper stared at the Boss across the room and decided that she was not going to let another man touch her against her will ever again. So as the Boss came rushing at her, the raven haired girl flung her hands out in front of her and screamed in rage. Suddenly a flare of light burst right in front of the Boss’s face. The brute stumbled backward in blind confusion. Seeing her chance, the young girl pulled a dagger she had stolen and stabbed the Boss. As soon as she felt that dagger slide home in his belly, Vesper couldn’t seem to stop herself. She kept stabbing, and stabbing, and stabbing until the Boss was nothing but a bloody pulp.

What she had done to the Boss gave Vesper a reputation that allowed her to survive and even thrive among the “underbelly” of Zobeck. The denizens of these warrens know that a dark haired ghost haunts the city streets in the evil hours of the night. This specter of the night is the former child prostitute, Vesper. This child of poverty, this child of abuse, this child that has suffered at the hands of the evil of men has become a child of the shadows. Vesper has found a purpose for her life in trying to reclaim the night from the beasts that hunt the darkness. The emerald eyed girl walks the deep shadows of the night so that no one else must live in fear the way she has for what seems her whole life.

Personality:
Personality:
~ Vesper feels utter shame at the things she was forced to do as a prostitute. Her childhood, her innocence, her life, her very soul was stolen away from her one horrible violated moment at a time. Now that she has freed herself from the clutches of the Boss, the young woman has sworn that she will redeem her life and her soul. For Vesper that means fighting for life even if this means fighting for the lives of people she doesn’t know but who live in fear of the night, of the darkness that walks the city streets.

~ Vesper’s life has been defined by betrayal. First, her parents betrayed her by selling her to “the Boss” and then every night men who should have stood up and protected this young girl instead betrayed her and used her to sate their own lusts. Because of this, Vesper finds it tough to trust others especially trusting them enough to let them close to her heart. Conversely she also desperately wants and needs friends, people who care for her and love her for who she is and not what they can get from her or do to her. This fear and this need battle one another daily as Vesper lurks in the shadows hiding her hurt and her pain from all around her.

~ Vesper views the magical powers that suddenly manifested in her time of need as she faced down the Boss as the greatest gift life could have given her. For a person who has been utterly helpless and powerless, these new abilities have finally given Vesper influence and control over her life. She has a acute hunger to learn more and to explore these powers so that she will never be completely vulnerable again.

~ So now Vesper stalks the shadows of the night where she can hide her pain and hurt, where she can explore her new found magical powers, and where she can hopefully find a chance to make amends for her past and redeem her soul from the darkness.

Bonus Character Material

Short story:

Vesper sat among the pile of blankets on the floor, what passed as a bed in her small room, trembling. The bruises from where her customer from last night had beaten her, for his own pleasure, were just beginning to show, but they made it painful to even move. The tears slowly fell from her deep emerald eyes and rolled down her delicate cheeks. Not again…I can’t do it again, Vesper’s thoughts cried out. Not again tonight. Oh please if there are any gods, please let this end…

When the Madame had come to get her as the sun set, Vesper had refused to get up and leave her room. She had told the old woman that she wouldn’t take another customer ever again. That was an hour ago and she had been sitting there weeping ever since.

Suddenly, the door of her room flew open as if kicked in. Vesper raised her eyes and there in the doorway stood the Boss. An uglier man she had never seen. His eyes were a muddy brown and small and beady like a rat’s. His face was covered in pockmarks and random patches of short wiry black hairs. His teeth, what were left of them, were black and brown as they rotted in his foul mouth. He wasn’t a huge man but he had an air of cruelty and viciousness about him that he used to frighten all under his control.

Vesper pulled herself to a standing position and dashed the tears from her cheeks, trying to gain some appearance of dignity to face this man.

“So you think you can refuse to work do you? Well I think it’s time for you to learn a lesson about who is in control here,” screamed the Boss, spit flying with every word. “Either you leave this room right now and make some men happy or I will teach you a lesson you will never forget!”

Vesper couldn’t control her trembling as she watched the Boss become angrier and angrier with each word. She couldn’t seem to find the strength to say anything, all she could do was stand there and look the Boss in the eye.

Seeing that she wasn’t going to respond, the Boss became furious. He stepped into the room, raised his fist, and slugged Vesper right in the face. With a loud crunch Vesper’s nose was broken and she went flying backwards into the wall. When her vision cleared some, Vesper saw the Boss coming at her again and that is when the dam of emotions she had been carrying for seven very long years broke. Suddenly all Vesper felt was pure rage and hatred.

Never again! Never again will a man touch me or hurt me against my will, Vesper swore.

She levered herself into a crouch and pulled out a dagger she had stolen from a customer and hidden in her boot. As the Boss stepped forward to beat her again, the raven haired girl flung her left hand out in front of her and screamed in rage. Suddenly a flare of light burst right in front of the Boss’s face. Without a moments though, Vesper snapped her right arm forward burying the dagger into the brute’s stomach. As she felt the dagger slide into his flesh her rage exploded and Vesper couldn’t stop stabbing.

Sometime later when Vesper came to her senses, she saw the Boss lying on her floor, a bloody pulp torn by over a hundred stab wounds. He looked like a piece of meat from the butcher's shop down the street. She looked at her hands and arms and saw that she was covered in his blood. She also noticed that her trembling had completely stopped. Her rage had burned out to ashes and she simply felt cold and dead inside. Vesper calmly bent and cleaned her dagger off on one of the blankets and returned it to her boot. She looked around her room one last time, feeling nothing. Vesper turned and walked out: out of that room, out of that brothel, and into the night.

Starting levels is 1st. Some familiarity with the setting is required.

Ok I'll see if I can whip something up tonight. I've got quite a few Midgard products, although I've only really flicked through them at need rather than comprehensively devoured them. All the same, I'm hoping to make my next live game a Midgard one :)

Is there a particular reason for favouring the spell-less ranger over the normal one? I just went to make an urban ranger (Zobeck), thought I'd check your OP, and noticed that suggestion...

It's just that I prefer Spell-less Ranger (or Wildlander,as I call it). In my RL games I have replaced both Fighter and Ranger with my own versions of the class, and Spell-less Rangers is the closest thing to my Wildlander there is (after Midnight CS Wildlander, of course).


Question: Are you using the Status rules?


Well, sounds like you've just given me an excuse to buy another Kobold Press PDF :)

I might take couple of days to absorb the spell-less ranger before I submit a character - that still well within your timeframe?

No problem. If the game starts and you don't have Crossroads yet I will happily fill you in on the details. For a quick overview, the Shadowsworn is a rogue with some limited shadow magic. I have never played it before but it fit this character so completely, I decided to give it a try.

Great and Powerful DM,

The info on the Shadowsworn has been sent to you. I will probably make a few changes to Vesper's personality section above to give her a slightly grittier/darker feel...to better fit the non-good requirement for the class. After all she's been through she will be morally ambivalent (i.e. True Neutral). By no means evil but not really good either...a confused jumble of compassion, fear, powerseeking, etc. Should be fun for Roleplaying.

Additional info: The game will start in Zobeck, but may branch out to the rest of the Crossroads region. Your characters need to be strangers to the city - that is my only requirement. You may even import your Golarion characters into Midgard setting, with an explanation that they have somehow stumbled into it and now seek to return to their own world, but be aware that I will choose two such characters at most.


Ok the "Stranger to Zobeck" requirement will require a slight rewrite of Vesper's background but no big deal. I will do that later today. I will simply place her origins in another fitting city and have her come to Zobeck hoping to find a new start in her life.

Aragoth: Dwarven merchant Guard:

Born in a stronghold not far from The Silver Kingdom.
Took up arms and ale at an early age
Assigned to merchant guard in hopes of calming the young dwarf foolery down
Last straw - {Words from stronghold leader - 'Don't bother coming back if you screw up again'} A dull trade through Zobeck, Aragoth let himself get carried off his boredom, the next morning waking up half the day gone in an alleyway somewhere in the city. The caravan by then already gone (or compromised?) The dwarf would begin his journey by searching for his items.

I am considering either an elven witch with ties to the Margreve or a human fighter type, possibly spell-less ranger or lore warden fighter.

I think elves are more or less rare though. If it works better story-wise I could change the concept to human or somesuch. Hope to have it put together tomorrow eve. This week is crazy busy.


I'm thinking about a Kariv, Ranger (likely spell-less), from the Rothenian Plain. Will try to have full background up in the next day or two.


Okay, here's my character concept. It may be a little unorthodox, and if it's too much so, I'm open to changing, just let me know. I'll put up the mechanics hopefully tomorrow night.

Morrigan, Elven Witch-Time patron::

When I first awoke into this world, my memory tells me of feeling a vague feeling of numb coldness, as if I were aware of someone else shivering, but not really feeling it myself personally. The next I remember is a fleeting impression of looking up; as if from lying on my back and staring up at the sky - glimpses of a pale, ghostly moon overhead, etched and framed by bare winter branches. The sensation of something skittering by next to my ear, then darkness as my eyes closed once more.

The next I awake it is with a sudden start, my throat closing as I claw for breath. Wide eyed, I look down to see the scorpion. It strikes. Searing pain, I can’t move. I hear the mournful cry of wolves in the distance, but coming closer. It skitters across my chest, it’s tail brandished threateningly, or so I think. I feel its poison course through me like fire. I twitch, muscles long ago atrophied come to life. The wolves cry again. No, not wolves, much worse than wolves. And very near now. I scramble to my feet, the shadowy forest lurching and spinning dizzily around me. I take a step, then another. A third, and I am running. My clothes, long since rotted, are torn away by clawing branches that reach for me. The scorpion grips me, claws digging into my shoulder for purchase. I pay it no heed now. Odd, that.

The shadowy hounds chase, drawing nearer, nipping at my heels. One leaps for me, teeth bared and reaching for my throat. I scream, falling backwards, tripping on something in the dark. The beast grips me, teeth snapping closed just as it suddenly ‘poofs’, drifting apart as if mist dispersed in an instant by the sun. I feel laughter, amusement. I can’t tell if it is someone nearby that I hear or if it is my own laughter, echoing within a mind overwrought.

“You are not done as yet, Morrigan.” The voice is deep, resonant. I frown. That is not my name. I open my mouth to say as much, frown again. I can’t remember my name – I can’t remember anything. My throat goes dry.

“Go, you cannot stay here. The hour is passing and gone.” The voice commands, and then it also is gone, like time past. I feel suddenly empty. My knees are wobbly. Who am I? I wonder, a moment of panic gripping me. Movement grabs my attention. A flutter of wings as a crow stares down at me from a branch above. Dark wings, dark words. The phrase leaps into my mind from I know not where – an echo of a forgotten past. The crow opens his beak and croaks. “Mooor!” I blink, staring at him. He cocks his head to the side in the manner of birds, his eye unnaturally upon me. “Mooor – a pause – eeKan!!” I run, fleeing as the crow mocks me, his raucous croaks pursue me into the night. “Moooreekhan Moooreeegan… Mooorighan…. Morrrigan!!”

Background:

Morrigan was born and given the name Seliniel some nine hundred and some years ago. Back when the elves were still a power in Midgard. Her father was an ambassador, her mother an enchantress. She came of age at about the time of the Black Sorceress’ Revolt, some 800 years ago. Indeed, it was during her naming ceremony that her settlement came under attack, the human forces bolstered by dark summonings and worse – traitor elves who had thrown in with the shadow.

Seliniel’s people did not stand a chance, taken by surprise as they were. One by one they fell as some, her father included, tried to organize a defense. Besieged and without hope, Seliniel’s mother took her by the hand and produced one of the keys to the fey-roads. Together they fled.

But as fate would have it the road was not safe. Twisted and corrupted, the ways themselves rose up against them even as they were pursued by horrors behind. They became separated. Siliniel, not knowing how the fey roads were traveled (not that it would have mattered as twisted as they had become) was left the road to escape her pursuer and was subsequently ensnared in a trap, her body held in stasis outside of what we know as time, and her mind asleep as first days then months then years, decades, and centuries passed in the mortal realm.

How she broke free is a mystery. She certainly has no idea herself. The first conscious memories she has was that of waking in what she later learned to be the Margreve. Perhaps it was the presence, the ‘voice’ she heard that was responsible. But who he was is as much a mystery as everything else. A god? A spirit or ghost from her past? Or one of the denizens of the shadow realm? What is his purpose, this strange benefactor? Only he can say.

Random bits as they come to me:

Siliniel – Morrigan now – remembers little to nothing of her past prior to waking. She has an awareness that there was one, but of that life, there is nothing, like voids in her mind. However, sometimes she will just happen to –know- things without knowing how she knows them - random bits of knowledge that will pop into her mind, when she doesn't concentrate too hard. She gets dreams, often nightmares, but also sometimes images, feelings, impressions that skim the surface of what might have been, but they thus far have skittered away as she tried to focus on them.

The ‘voice’ has not since made itself known.

In addition to losing her memories, Morrigan has also missed out on the better part of a thousand years of history. The world she once knew no longer exists. The kingdoms have changed, the customs, even her own people are, in a practical sense, gone. While she may not always remember the specifics of what once was, she is aware enough to know that what is, shouldn’t be, and this is a source of uneasiness to her. Things feel -alien- for lack of a better word.

The Margreve itself seems to have accepted her presence, sheltering her as her body, long unused, began the process of returning from atrophy.

She has taken to disguising her elven heritage if she can when in the company of others, having experienced on multiple occasions the ‘excitement’ it tended to illicit. Because of this, she is typically uneasy and even skittish around others until she gets to know them, and for the longest time preferred solitude - even though it would normally go against her natural inclination. It was often... safer.

However, she has begun to search for answers to the holes in her mind – and that means by necessity the company of others. Hearing of the arcanist collegium in Zobeck, she decided that this is likely the best (and at least, the nearest) place to seek answers to the questions nagging her mind: Who is she?
