"Thank you for your time, sorry to bother you." Roj stands in front of the door, nose just inches from where it slammed shut.
"Look, we're not going to find her checking one door at a time. let's each take a door, maybe one of us will get lucky." Roj moves over to the next one and knocks. "Excuse me. I mean no harm, but I'm looking for a friend, and I was told this was the right place. Does a Miss Sabor live in this building somewhere?"
Erik Copper |
Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 14
If possible, Erik casts Charm Person on the old lady as the door is shut in Rojerik's face. Save DC 14. He then knocks again softly.
"Ma'am? Ma'am, apologies for disturbing you. But please, she's such a good young lady, and we need to help her before real trouble comes knocking. Ma'am? Could you open the door and please tell us where she is?"
Borden Read |
Borden starts racing up the stairs
Time for me to use my line 'I'm Borden Read... and I am here to rescue you'. Never thought I'd get to use that line!, he says happily as he moves rapidly upwards.
Guinevere "Gwen" Duchamp |
Gwen follows in silence. This is a job for the charismatic members of the party, not for her. She carefully looks around and also focuses on the sounds from outside the building, so as to get an early warning of the approaching mob.
Is there a window in the corridor? Perhaps Gwen could keep an eye on the streets from there. Taking 10 on perception: in Korvosa and against humans, that's a 22.
Nevynxxx |
Gwen finds a window on the top floor. More just an opening in the wall with a ragged curtain over it than anything, and looks out and down. The mob is moving closer, and will be at the base of this building in a few moments. Getting out down that way is looking like it could be difficult.
Guinevere "Gwen" Duchamp |
"Huh, guys? We HAVE to move fast. They will be here momentarily. The young woman must come with us NOW, or she's fried chicken. Also, it looks like it won't be an easy escape. We either bluff our way out, or find another route." Gwen starts looking around frantically.
Is there any other way out? The roof, perhaps?

Sorry, link is blocked from work. Will have to wait until I get home.
Erik Copper |
"Trinia? Please listen!" Erik presses close to the gap in the doorway. "My name's Erik Copper, and I've been sent by the authorities along with my friends to extract you. There's a murderous mob on it's way, and they want blood - we want to help you get out before they get their hands on you. Please open the door! We have to leave now if we're to save you!"
In his desperation, Erik extends his hand and casts a minor illusion of a Guard's insignia, sending it floating through the gap in the doorway where it hovers before fading a few seconds later.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Using prestidigitation to cast the illusion of the insignia.
Borden Read |
Hi Trinia? Ummm... I know you don't have reason to trust anyone at the moment but we believe in your innocence..., Borden says to the barricaded door.
I'm Borden Read. Maybe you've heard of me? I'm here to rescue you - the mob gathers and we need to move quick. Open up and let us help you
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25

Aid Another on Roj's attempt: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
"Aargh! There's no time for games, she has to come out NOW or we're all dead!" You can easily perceive the strain and hurry in Gwen's harsh words.
Nevynxxx |
As Roj bounces off the door, Gwen slams into it smashing away the barrier and forcing the door wide open.
Inside the room is small, as you'd expect from these buildings, and sparsely furnished. It's neat and tidy though, with a small vase of flowers on a table to one side. The only part of the room that isn't so tidy is the corner where an easel stands surrounded with brushes and paint. A half-completed painting of an imp and a pseudodragon fighting atop a church steeple. A single window looks out over the tangled rooftops of the Shingles, while just under it, a woman sleeps in a curled-up position on a low bed.
Need to keep to rounds, though order isn't important here, time sort of it.
Basil Kettering |
Will: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (7) + 0 = 7.
Basil quickly moves into the room, and attempts to gently shake the woman awake.
"Miss? I do not mean to be an alarmist, but we need to get you out of here, before the mob arrives..."
Guinevere "Gwen" Duchamp |
Gwen's Will: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
"Basil, that's just a fake. Young lady, if you can hear me: you have but two options, come with us and live, or wait just a few more SECONDS for the mob that's on its way RIGHT NOW to LYNCH YOU. Just make up you mind already!"
Guinevere "Gwen" Duchamp |
If nobody answers, Gwen will take a look out of the window, just in case Trinia decided to make a break for it via that route.
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
Rojerick Alandsson |
Will: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 6 + 2 = 15 (+2 for being told Trinia isn't real)
Roj stands in the door for a moment before groaning. "She's not in here, is she? Must've gone out the window. See anything, Gwen?"
Nevynxxx |
Eric can notice the Aura of faint magic where the spell exists.
There is no answer to Gwen, but as she moves to the window, she spots a girl, fitting Trinia's description about 20ft away on the rooftop below the window.
Init
21 Trinia
19 Bordan
16 Eric
14 Basil
10 Gwen
5 Roj
Trinia moves to Card 5.
Bordan.
Guinevere "Gwen" Duchamp |
How far is she? A well placed tanglefoot bag might stop her or at least slow her down.
Edit: never mind, I've noticed you wrote 20 feet away.
Tanglefoot bag: ranged touch attack with a range increment of 10 feet. So that would be a -4?
If there are no other penalties, on her turn, Gwen will retrieve a tanglefoot bag and throw it at Trinia.
Ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 5 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 5 + 2 - 4 = 13
Reroll with 1 Harrow Point:
Ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 5 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 5 + 2 - 4 = 16
Reroll with 1 Harrow Point:
Ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 5 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 5 + 2 - 4 = 17
I'll keep the 17.
Guinevere "Gwen" Duchamp |
Consider each card to represent 30ft.
I'm confused. So, is she 20 ft, 50 ft or 120 ft away? Or did she move from 20 ft to 120 ft away in one round?
Nevynxxx |
[ooc]Edit: never mind, I've noticed you wrote 20 feet away.

Ohh FFS!
Right, this is where the abstraction of the chase scene takes over. The chase rules say each card is 30 feet, and she starts at Card 4, so 120ft away.
The pre-cahase text says that she's outside and sneaking off, if you don't notice her before she gets 50ft, she's gone, and you'll never find her.
So, between you noticing her, and your action, she moves ~ 100ft...
But the cards aren't supposed to represent exactly 30 ft, they are spills and trips and ups and downs.
So lets just say, you can't tos the bag through the semi-open window easily, and the time it takes you to get outside is what gives her the head start.
You are all now outside, and she is a few cards away, so way more than 4 range increments.
Basil Kettering |
Basil eyes the rooftop dubiously.
"Well, if she wants to risk breaking her neck, she is welcome to escape. I suppose that *would* be preferable to being massacred by the mob. I sure as heck am no roof rat!"
He then climbs out the window...
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13.
...and starts looking for a way back to the ground.
Most of those checks Basil will have trouble with, and there is one that he literally cannot do, so he will bow-out of this chase.
Erik Copper |
Erik rushes to the window as Gwen and Basil climb out, and spots the fleeing blonde. Biting his lower lip in consternation, he suddenly lifts his hand and casts a spell, summoning the likeness of a squad of guards climbing up into view right ahead of where Trinia is racing.
Casting Minor Image, which has a range of 480 ft. I'm summoning a group of guards, complete with sounds of their cursing and then yelling excitedly at the sight of her as they gain the rooftop. I'm placing them strategically so as to block her progress. If she's 100 ft. away, then they're appearing 130 ft. away, for example. DC 15 to disbelieve.
Nevynxxx |

There's nothing to say you have to of course, but you also don't need to risk the checks, you can get a normal "standard action + move action" turn in each round while moving 1 card, and not having any ill effects.
The tests are just if you want to move faster.
Guinevere "Gwen" Duchamp |
On her round, Gwen moves from 1 to 2.
I suppose we can't use our standard action to try a check on the card we've moved to, right? What I mean is, Gwen can't move to Card 2 and then, as her standard action, try no. 6 and/or no. 2 skill checks, can she?
Rojerick Alandsson |
Roj eyes the narrow ledges and the crowds in the street far below. "Goddess, please guide my steps, and if not, let my death come quickly." He steps out onto the ledges, moving quickly.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Though his feet slip off once, he feels a presence urging him on. Whether it's his goddess or something else, he knows he'll never be able to say for certain, but he regains his feet and tries again.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
He makes his way to the other side safely enough, closing the distance between him and the girl. "Please stop, miss! The Dawnflower would never harm you, and neither will I!"
That's a Harrow Point reroll right there.
Rojerick Alandsson |
Awesome. It was totally successful until I realized that it double-posted. The rolls were 13 and 20 (with modifiers). I deleted the post with a typo, and it kept the rolls with the other post. Now I failed the checks I passed.
Guinevere "Gwen" Duchamp |
LMAO, I'm sure I can trust you. We'll go with the 13 and 20. ;)
I actually saw the double post and can vouch for Roj :-)
Rojerick Alandsson |
Thanks, Gwen. If you'd rather keep everything to what you can see, I'm fine with that, it'll just take a rewrite on the post. Either way works, failure can be as interesting as success sometimes.

That moves me two cards right?
Hey, wait, we're here to help!
