Just thought I would send a shout out to our players and get opinions from everyone on what we can do to make the game more fun. Ashe, Megan, and I are posting as slowly as we can, I think, but there are three others we don't hear from very often. :P That's somehow how PBPs go, but I just want to make sure that no one feels left out if the progress of the game is happening too quickly. I think things would be easier if this were a campaign, and I have sent an email to the webmaster but not yet received a reply (as I think has Megan). Its possible that things are very slow now for the holidays.
Megan, I hope our group is large enough and well balanced for the challenges ahead of us without our other paladin? If we need another character, we can reopen recruitment, or I wouldn't mind creating a second character if its helpful. :P Or maybe that's just silly. I like making characters. lol.
Varrel |
I'm quite happy with the game. I check back at least 2x a day, but don't post really long social ones (much) mostly because Varrel has so much insecurity and self doubt which keeps him quiet.
I am unsure if you are unhappy with Varrels attraction to Una. I can drop the roleplay if you wish. (Felt his type of char would gravitate to her, whether she returns or rejects the attention would have been interesting.
I'm sweet with the plotline. Varrel will be.checking on the Spiderking though, and if he has not been executed by now, may ask Una's aid in doing so. He is devout in his worship of Ragathiel, so will seek Vengeance if justice has not been served.
Hytogg |
Hytogg is still here, but doesn't post much if he's not actively involved. Still keeping up and will post when he has an opinion...For instance I'm fine with Hytogg casting Detect Magic, so didn't say anything. If I'd had another idea or disagreed, I would have spoken up.
We have two players driving the plot line, which is fine with me. If everyone posted as often, and as eloquently the game might slow down even more.
In addition I ran the first book of this AP in real life, so don't want to spoil anything with OoC info. I'm sure I'll pick up when we get to new material.
Una Therlmagne |
Varrel, Una could have made that perception check pretty easily, so I'm sure if she didn't want that sort of attention she would say something about it. :P For a while, (a bit before you showed up), I thought Ashe was courting her. But he seems to have turned his attentions to the NPC for the moment.
Asherick Whiteplume |
LOL. Ashe is just eloquent with everyone... especially women. All that chivalry and honor toward women all wrapped up in his sense of right and wrong behavior for a 'noble-hearted' man... regardless of actual nobility or not.
Sunphoenix72 |
Una rolls her eyes and grunts something incomprehensible.
"All right. Who's going with me?"
LOLs! Sorry for all the mush... but I eat up romance! I'm sure we'll move on from here back to the action! :)
By the way... can anyone tell me what happened to the original DM... Mauvais? I'm curious... there seems no warning or explanation for his leaving... just curious. I hope he is ok.
Megan Robertson |
I never knew... I answered a plea for a replacement DM, and had no contact with the original one. Likewise I hope that whatever removed him from the game was not an unfortunate event... even if it has given me the opportunity to play with some outstanding folks!
Asherick Whiteplume |
Hey folks. It seems that indeed cash is something of an issue with our party. I'd like to make a proposal...
Ashe still is carrying two doses of Dust of Appearance. Now with the Powder Alchemical concoction... and a hit on an AC 5 touch one can briefly reveal the location of a Invisible opponent. And unless it is some magical special ability, or a ranged sniper attack most foes cannot attack while stealthed.
The Dust of Appearance automatically reveals invisible targets and makes it practically impossible for them to conceal themselves with stealth. Well I think we don't REALLY need two doses of such a very limited use item...
I'd like Ashe to visit the ACADAMAE... and sell on eof the doses for the gold value. A magic item is NOT a mundane items and a case could easily be made that they sell for their market value. Which in the case of Dust of Appearance is 1,800gp.
If Megan has no problem with it that would be 360gp for each character and thus give us all just a little more cash and not break the game with too much wealth.
Plus we still have a single dose Dust of Appearance to use should it be needed.
Any other thoughts on the matter?
Varrel |
yeah i'm cool. Wanted to buy stuff before we go to boneyard anyway. Figured the Church would sell undead killy type gear ;) although I can already to slashing/bludgeon/pierce with what I got.
Acadamae trip works for me. Always after new scrolls. Magai get so many awesome 2nd levelspells.
Further the Marshall did say we could TAKE what we wished from the armory. I think we sould grab any masterwork weapons they might have? Or would only common gear be available. I'll ask the quarter master for a Masterwork Warhammer/Mace or Masterwork (+3str) Composite shortbow.
Asherick Whiteplume |
I also need some clarification on the status of this loot...
[Devargo's Possessions (on person)]
7x Vials – {5x Black, 2x Clear ‘Blue Cork & Red Cork’}
- potion of cure moderate wounds (2d8+3hp heal), 5x spider venom (DC 12, 1d4 Str/1d4 Str)
2x Keys - one opened his chest, the other the brig in which Varrel was held.
[Lab – C8]
7 Vials - Six of these contain a dose of shiver (worth 25 gp apiece), while the seventh contains a dose of dream spider venom.
(Think Una gave a vial of shiver to FM Croft, yes?)
Did someone keep the Spider Venom or Dream Spider Venom?
Did the drugs get sold, discarded, or turned in?
I do not need to know who did what... only if I need to keep track of it so I can clear it from the loot list.
Asherick Whiteplume |
Ok. I'll remove those drugs from my loot list.
What about the spider poisons?
As for Organized crime... there is a 'Legal' Theives Guild in Korvosa... the "Cerulean Society". There is even an all-female Gang of Cat Burglers... the "Catsdew Lofties".
Asherick Whiteplume |
Ok. Thanks Megs!
Ashe will be buying these things first...
[25gp] Bloodblock = +5 ‘alch’ on Heal cks for first aid, treat wounds or deadly wounds’, Ends bleed effect – DC 15 ‘heal’, 1use healer’s kit
[25gp] Bodybalm = +5 ‘alch’ to SV vs long-term care, treating poison & treating disease
[50gp] Anti-Plague = +5 ‘alch’ to Fort vs disease – 1hr, Infected – 2 Saves ‘no +5’
[120gp] Healer’s Kit-Mw w/Surgeon’s Tools = +5’cir’ Heal, 10uses
[25gp] Air Crystal = 1min breathable Air ‘no talking’
[4cp] 4x Powder = AC5 – 5’ft sq ‘Find Invis’ (2lbs)
[1gp] Shield Sconce
- total: 246.04gp
...Ashe has plenty of tools for dealing death. He'd much rather gain tools for healing people. Depending upon how much gold we get from the next caper... I'm thinking of buying a Alchemist's Lab-Masterwork so he can start making the Alchemical concoctions for treating injuries and possibly grenade weapons like Liquid Ice and Alchemist's Fire.
Not sure how far we are away for leveling but with his next levels... I'm planning on eventually upping his Craft {Alchemy} to a point were he can Take 10! and get a 25 automatically with a combination of skill ranks, equipment and stat bonuses.
Varrel |
Well done Ashe, I'll be wanting to stop by the acadamae before/after we pick you up depending on whiich is closer. I'll check with the quartermaster for you first.
Asherick Whiteplume |
LOL.! Thx Warning heard. I'm just trying to emphasize that Ashe does not like killing... not at all. Even evil people. He does not see an evil alignment as an excuse to just murder some being. Consider, that one can be evil... and yet never have murdered someone. Is it then "just" to simply murder all that radiate evil? Ashe does not believe so. Where there is Goodness, there must be mercy and a chance at redemption.
I considered his response for some bit before replying... he is only mortal, and young - the continuous, "lets just kill them all...", attitude is grating on his sense of justice, fairness and mercy... so I figured it was time for him to get a little 'testy' about the issue.
Its all role-play. But he would not stop the party from killing something that was evil if they all decided it was in their best interests.
The stance he took was again because... Varrel said "let's question it first" {which was Ashe's opinion as well}, Una and Shakhan said, "kill it" {which Ashe thought was needlessly premature and permanent}, so it was again a 50/50 split ... no majority of opinion... and Hytogg did not tip the scale of party opinion. Had Varrel or Hytogg sided unequivocally with Una and Shakhan... Ashe would have merely grumbled but made no pronouncements of his opinion as party majority was clearly ruling. Were the creature not evil - it would have made a vast difference in his opposition to just killing it, simply because its weird looking and doing something to a corpse {which he might not have even killed}. For all we knew, at the time - the 'creature' could have been a slave of the Necromancer and not serving him willingly... even evil people can be wronged - that they are Evil makes them no less worthy of justice! And, who knows some simple act of unnecessary kindness might get a evil being to consider changing its ways... ?
But warning heard and accepted, turning rhetoric down a bit. :)
Una Therlmagne |
Okay, after going back and redoing the numbers for my character. I discovered I had left out a skill rank (which I've applied to Acrobatics), and that I am carrying a Medium Load. Remind me to find a magic backpack or something when we get out of this bonehole.
Sunphoenix72 |
LOLS! Well, they do have an INT of 5. Thats well above animal INT but no genius. They are very simple creatures apparently but now knwing this... it kinds would make Ashe ponder the fairness of 'enslaving something intelligent' to simply serve the cities needs. Unjust is unjust regardless of a beings intelligence. But that is kinda balanced in that they are getting what they desire...free food and offal to gorge on... and not hunting - "usually" living victims.
Just another one of those 'uncomfortable' choices that the 'Grey Knight' must ponder in his daily narrow and unclear path of serving the cause of freedom and justice in Korvosa.
Una Therlmagne |
Okay, so I has a question about the paladin's detect evil ability. At will, he can use it as a spell. As a move action, he can look at a single individual or object and determine how evil it is as though he had looked at it with detect evil for three rounds. So that's two different abilities wrapped into one. An at will action (free action? if he's using it as a spell is it a standard action?), and a move action?
Megan Robertson |
Um, Una, are you asking me? What's the question?
As I see it, detect evil is verging on an inherent ability for a paladin... they need to concentrate a bit for it to kick in (else the poor beggars would have a continuous headache!), but can either have it running almost as a background scan, maintaining a certain level of concentration and renewing as necessary, or they can focus on a given individual/item (the move action use).
Sunphoenix72 |
From what I have discussed with various venture Captains of Paizo Organized play, The paladin can cast detect evil...as per a normal casting of the spell..but it does not take a spell slot and is continually available ...hence the At Will. The detect evil spell-like ability is as per the spell so it has a duration after its been cast b the paladin. But to actually activate/cast it takes a standard action. To sense the presence of evil takes as much time as it takes any other caster to get information from a detection spell like detect magic. That does not takes a Standard action - I believe, as it does not usually take a standard action with other detection spells like detect magic... but that is up for debate. The paladin's detect evil also has an added function in that as a Move action the paladin can look at a specific target creature or object and get a three round scan of said target instantly.
This is what I know, its not exhaustive but we could consult some of the threads here for more info if more clarification is wanted?
Una Therlmagne |
Well, I was curious at first, if the Paladin's detect evil ability only functioned as a move action (against one target at a time), with the spell providing guidelines. But I was not reading the rules technically enough it seems. Question answered, proceeding. :)
LoreKeeper |
Oh, Shakhan... you could have joined us in the Discussion thread as we talked about this... Now we have two blue boxes in the playing thread... :P Please note smileys before taking offense. (I have to put that disclaimer in now, sadly.)
No offense taken :) - I just realized that I don't have the OOC thread for Megan's pbp in my feedreader, so I've been missing out on all the banter.
...
As all(?) detect spells indicate: their duration is based on concentration and have an upper limit on duration. Concentrating to maintain a spell is a standard action, same as concentrating to maintain an illusion or any other spell.
The only other caveat for detect spells is that the caster can chose to focus the detection to more specifically target something. Normally that takes a couple of rounds, but the bonus for paladins is that they only need to do a single move action to complete the detection process on a single individual.
LoreKeeper |
While detect evil is maintained (with a standard action, by concentrating), we move effectively at half-rate; as the party as a whole would only use one move action to move along per round.
Of course, stealth-like PCs can double-move at the same net speed without needing to take fast-stealth penalties. Likewise other PCs can spend standard actions to actively search while going along.
But generally that doesn't matter much, unless there's very pressing time constraints.
Megan Robertson |
Yes, I am that Megan Robertson.
I run RPG Resource - hence get a fair bit of stuff to review. People are kind enough to say I'm quite good at it! Anyway, will be off to finish the latest one now I have done my 'DM sweep'...
LoreKeeper |
{Verrel, Ashe wants to know if you can slumber hex the Derro... he does not want to just slay it out of hand. Such cold-hearted killing sickens his heart - especially when the foe is almost helpless. He wants to bind it, blind fold it and gag it so it will not be any trouble while we search the rest of the lair.}
He says without a hint of irony.
Una Therlmagne |
My apologies everyone. Real life hit me hard the past month. Two deaths in the family and running all over the county to sort things out. It's been a nightmare, and hardly any free time. Hardly any time to sleep really... not that I really want to. The stress has caused a lot of actual nightmares.
