"This creature is too close to our settlement to leave it alone. Anyone fishing in the lake would be at risk by this creature if we don't stop it, so let's finish it."

"Yep, regular turtle, just a really big one," Milo agrees with Idris's assessment. A bit sadly, he adds "Kivan is right. Even if we befriend it, there's nothing to say it won't swallow the next fisherman it finds. I could scare it off, but it would make a home somewhere else on Tuskwater Lake. It might even move closer to Haven." Milo hated to kill the turtle - it must be very old to have grown so large - but he couldn't see any other option.

As the others prepare for battle, he casts magic fang on Nix.

True to Pretty's assessment of the situation, the turtle does not seem eager to rush up the cliffside trail to assault you. It remains perched at the water's edge, gaping mouth threatening grievous harm to those who approach it.

Seeing the turtle remain stationary, Maja relaxes her grip on Welden's bow. Still, she keeps one eye on the aggressive looking creature.

"I don't see what else we can do, unless we're going to leave entirely and wait for it to come on land to feed. It looks pretty hostile, and I imagine if Idris and Pretty close the distance, it will probably want to defend this cove. We'll be ready up here to use arrows and magic against the beast. And if it withdraws immediately, we will know that it's not aggressive. Idris, I'll shield you so you'll be ready to stand toe to toe with the turtle."

Maja rejoins the group momentarily and calls forth a prayer of protection on Idris. Shield of Faith, Idris gets +3AC

Like Maja, Milo notices that the turtle seems to be defending its territory and not behaving overly aggressive.... yet. "I'll talk to it and see if it eats fish or if it's fond of two legged creatures too. "

Milo checks that his sword is sheathed at his hip, casts a spell, (speak with animals ) and then goes slowly down the cliff path, standing tall and confident to show it he isn't afraid or intimidated, but not making any sudden movements to startle the turtle. When he gets within 30 feet, or if the turtle gets upset before that he stops to talk to it. "Good morning, strong, fierce Turtle. You have a nice home. Can I ask you a few questions? "

Pretty shruggs. Letting Milo try it his way felt much better than slaughtering the poor creature. "I don't feel good killing it. Of course, we may have problems in the future, but as far as we know that creature didn't harm anyone. We know where does it lay, if it ever goes wild we can come back and finish it."

The rogue also has a different line of thought. "I wonder, where does this creature goes to when it climbs the cliff?" She looks at the other end of the trail, and follows it if possible.

chatting with the turtle

The turtle grows increasingly agitated as Milo approaches the enormous reptile. Deciding not to test the range of the beast's strike, Milo holds up short of the pool and addresses it from the ledge.

hoooooooooome, rasps the turtle in response. eeeeeeeeeeattttt. guaaaaaaaaard hoooooooooome. eeeeeeeeeeeeattttt.

The turtle gapes its jaws slightly wider, and you see motion from within. Atop the turtle's tongue, a wriggling growth flails about. About the length and thickness of Milo's arm, the growth resembles a massively fat worm. If you were a fish, you might be tempted by this.

following the trail
1d20 ⇒ 14

Pretty finds that the trail is considerably harder to follow once atop the cliff. The ledge that curves down to the pool is barren and rocky, whereas the living grass conceals the scrapes left by the massive turtle. Still, her keen and practiced eyes pick out the tell-tale signs of the turtle's path - evidently left over many years. The trail winds southward and slightly to the west, and continues for as far as you'd care to take it. Wherever this turtle travels to, it's many miles away.

"Good idea, thanks Maja!"

Realizing his questions were too complicated, Milo takes a different tact. He backs away some to let the turtle know he isn't invading its home. "Eat fish? Eat water-grass?"

Since questioning isn't working, Milo decides he will just tell the turtle what he wants as simply as possible. He stands tall, holding his arms out to look larger and more threatening. "Turtle try to eat two-legs. Then two-legs eat turtle." Repeating this a few times, Milo stares directly at the turtle to make his threat clear. "Turtle eat fish. Turtle eat water grass. Two-legs go."

Turtle Lake

Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiishhhhhhh rasps the turtle, flailing away with the fleshy growth on its tongue. eaaaaatttt fiiiiiiiiiishhhhhhh. Assuming its diet is similar to that of its smaller relatives, the turtle would primarily feed by ambushing fish or other reptiles baited by its tongue.

Incredibly, Milo seems to get through somewhat to the dim-witted beast. Milo’s slender form trying to look scary to the massive turtle seems somewhat comical, but it has the desired effect. The turtle rocks backwards a few feet, sending displaced water lapping against the shallow rim of its pool. Nooooooooooot eaaaaattttt it hisses, spraying more warm water from its maw. Abruptly, the turtle pushes back from the shoreline with enormous, stubby feet and sinks into the depths of the pool, trailing bubbles. After a moment, its dark form is lost to sight. Clearly, the pool has significant depth far out of proportion to its modest surface dimensions.

Seraphina at the Smithy

Tallus watches with wide eyes as the acid rolls down Seraphina’s arm. ”Cor, Yer Lordship! Ye’ve got t’ have skin of iron to bear that! I’ve seen sword-wrights use that stuff to etch an’ clean blades.” After marveling at your resistance to acid, the blacksmith considers the project. ”Aye, that’d be a nice touch t’see chiming by the lake. Don’t see why it wouldn’t work. If’n you bring some copper I kin get started. We’ll need some clay, good clean stuff what we can scratch on an’ make us a cope an’ a drag. You kin make th’ designs you’d like, I’ll cast ‘em for yeh, and you kin finish ‘em up nice as you please. I’ve some new draw-files an’ ruby-cloth from Restov what would work just the trick to shine it all up nice-like. You’ve got a poet’s touch, yer Lordship. I jest hammer on the metal, wouldn’t think of something nice like you’ve got in mind.”

Pretty and the Apprentice

”Well, Lady, ‘e jest blew in on the breeze one day,” says Tallus in response to your questions. The slender blacksmith pauses to wipe coal dust and sweat from his brow and takes a swig of water from a tin cup. ”Liddle black tyke such as him, I knew he wasn’t from around here. Said he wanted to work an’ needed some bread. Figured I’d need a hand ‘round th’ shop sooner or later, an’ I’m in coin from my labor, I said sure. H’aint interested in’ talking ‘bout ‘is past too much. Just said ‘is daddy died an’ is mother left ‘im to fend for hisself. ‘es one hard worker, no doubt on that. I’ve started ‘im on the simple stuff – work the bellows, stoke the fire, clean out coals, brush off scale, sweep the floor. ‘e takes to every task what I ask of him an’ no complaint. After he’s worked a full day, ‘e asks to use my hammer an’ scrap metal an’ bangs it about a fair piece. I pay ‘im what an apprentice earns an’ then a tad more, yet I hain’t see him spend much. Sleeps by th’ forge an’ eats like ‘es at a poor-house. Never seen ‘im eat a bite of meat, neither when it’s free. Figger I’ll keep ‘im in bread to put some muscle on ‘is boy-arms. Where ‘e keeps his pay, I don’t know. Soon as I get some weight on ‘im an’ he can swing that hammer proper, I’ll have ‘im making horseshoes and such. I got a feeling Hamid’s going to make something of hisself.”

Later, you catch up with Hamid sitting by the lake at sunset. The sun is dipping low behind the forest to the west, and the glorious red streaks painted across the sky are mirrored on the cold, choppy water of the lake. Hamid doesn’t hear your approach over the lapping waters of the shoreline until you scuff some rocks or clear your throat. The lad has a wooden bowl of soup from the mess hall in your keep, and a sizable hunk of brown barley bread dipped in it. When you announce your arrival, Hamid stands to greet you with a bow from the waist. ”You honor me with your visit, Noble Lady. Hamid is your humble servant.” From his size and voice, you estimate that the lad can’t have more than ten years to his name. His common is accented, though less so than one might expect from hailing so far away, and his manners speak of coached etiquette.

I’m assuming that you follow the turtle’s trail south. It coincides with your earlier plan to scout out the lake

After encountering the turtle, the rest of the area proves to be flat and plain with nothing of much interest. You make camp for the first time in many weeks, letting the familiar night air of the Stolen Lands blow through your encampment with the ever present stars above. If not for your much greater abilities, holdings, and wealth, this could be any other night like the ones you spent charting out the northern reaches.

The morning dawns hot and muggy, with some relief provided by a westerly wind. Breaking camp after a breakfast of bread and oatmeal, you follow the mysterious trail left by the enormous turtle from before. The trail continues to be elusive, and you are forced to double back several times when what looks like old evidence of the turtle’s passage turns out to be a trick of the eye.

You smell the turtle’s destination before you see it. A strong stink of Sulphur blows in with the wind, assailing your sense of smell with the stench of rotting eggs. Investigating, you find a new feature that stands out starkly from the endless grasslands to which you’ve become accustomed. A soupy bowl of bubbling, steaming mud stretches in a defile between two hills. Irregularly shaped, but nearly 80 feet across, the mud pit roils with heat from some subterranean source. The mud pit sustains strange flora as well – oversized mushrooms and clumps of fungi sprout from the mud and cling to the sides of the pit, their dark caps stained with brilliant streaks of mineral color from mud splatters. Some stands of fungi stand over ten feet tall. The turtle’s trail leads straight to the northern edge of the mud pit, next to a particularly large swelling of fungal matter.

"Yes, Idris you are correct in thinking that there are the nine layers of hell. Pretty, I wouldn't be able to guess 'what in the nine hells is this' as I haven't been to hell yet to examine its plant life, and mud pits. "Yes I do," replies Hamid. "From land far to the south - a great place of sun and sand. I was reciting from the holy book of my people. We are to know our place in the great work of life - mortals deal in mortal affairs, immortals in their own. Tell me about this Port Ice. How can a ship sail through ice? It makes no sense."

Hamid copies you, picking up a stone and skimming it across the lake. That's the intention, anyways. Where your stone gracefully skipped four or five times, Hamid's tumbles into the water with a ragged splash.

Mud Pit

The mud roils and bubbles with released heat. Exploring through it cautiously, you find that the mud is pleasantly warm and not painful to the touch. In fact, the experience is quite comfortable. Maja rubs a bit of the mud between her fingers, finding it gritty with minerals. Such a substance would make an ideal treatment for several ills - those suffering from ailments of the skin, infectious disease, or recovering from injuries would find this pool of mud quite advantageous. In game effect: +4 on saving throws vs disease

Kivan finds several potent species of fungus that have use in alchemical reagents or magical formulae. In particular, you find eighteen well-developed Black Rattlecap mushrooms, a rare species that can be brewed into a potent tea that is rumored to stave off old age.

Many of the other types of mushrooms around the pit are edible as well. However, deciding if you're going to eat these mushrooms takes second priority to making sure the mushrooms don't eat you. The pile of fungi that Milo investigates suddenly bursts, shooting out a massive fruiting body that quivers and oozes horrid fluids. Several dripping tentacles sprout from its body, lashing the air around it, and a three-fanged beak clacks hungrily in your direction.

Eyes watering from the sulfurous smell, Milo doesn't even notice the living, moving fungus until its tentacle slams into him and coils around him. "Aaah! It's got me!" He shouts, unable to see what is going on. Meanwhile, Nix hacks and coughs from the nauseating stench, powerless to free herself from the monster's beak.

If I'm understanding the rules correctly, nauseated means you can only take a move action. Since Milo and Nix both fail the fort save, they are nauseated and cannot take the standard action to escape a grapple.

Milo fort save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Nix fort save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22

Milo: 35/44 hp, grappled, nauseated, ends at the end of Milo's next turn.
Nix: 45/54 hp, grappled, nauseated, ends at the end of Nix's next turn.

Pretty avoided going with the wizard since she knew he could somehow escape it in a heartbeat, if anything happened, but she was too busy with something to notice Milo and Nix going deeper into the mud. When she realized it, it was already too late, and thus the only action possible was to kill that hideous monster, although the stench almost made her puke. She moves to her left while drawing two flasks of some kind and throws them at the monster, aiming right at the center of the hideous creature, from where fire erupts!

Milo, looks like Nix passed her fort save... She should be able to attempt escape.

Fort Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21

The fetid smell was nearly overpowering, but she was able to keep a hold on her stomach. Kivan's shout caused her to pause briefly in thought. She had never brought forth fire before, her acid attacks had nearly always proven effective. Still, as a draconic scion, she felt sure she could summon forth fire... she only needed to focus. She stepped to the south and concentrated.

Fire... flames... heat... burning... NOW!

She extended her hands toward the strange creature and a great arc of flame leaped forth from her fingers across the distance to burn the fungal mass.

Never mind my post in the discussion thread, Red says Nix did not escape the grapple.

Still retching from the nasty odor, Milo backs away from the plant, drawing his bow an an arrow as he went. "Nix!" he shouts desperately between gags. His heart pounds as he fears for his wolf friend's life. But he feels his connection with Nix in the back of his mind. She isn't afraid, Milo realizes. The wolf is furious! Furious from pain and furious at her confinement! Nix bites and rips at the abomination's guts in an effort to tear her way out.

Milo is taking a five foot step back and drawing his bow. Nix is attacking the inside of the fungus to get free, rules for breaking free are in the spoiler below.

Milo: 35/44 hp, nauseated ended at the end of Milo's turn.
Nix: 32/54 hp, swallowed whole

Swallowed whole rules:
A swallowed creature can try to cut its way free with any light slashing or piercing weapon (the amount of cutting damage required to get free is equal to 1/10 the creature’s total hit points), or it can just try to escape the grapple. The Armor Class of the interior of a creature that swallows whole is normally 10 + 1/2 its natural armor bonus, with no modifiers for size or Dexterity. If a swallowed creature cuts its way out, the swallowing creature cannot use swallow whole again until the damage is healed. If the swallowed creature escapes the grapple, success puts it back in the attacker’s mouth, where it may be bitten or swallowed again

Sera gasps as Nix goes down the fungal creature's gullet. Suddenly unsure if her fire attack would harm the wolf as well... she decides they need speed on their side if they were to save her from being digested alive! She moved up and spun the whirlwind of haste between her hands, sending it out to imbue her friends with swiftness.

Can I still cast haste on Nix? She is within range of the spell... If not, will hit everyone but Kivan as he is too far out.

Haste, for 6 rounds:
The transmuted creatures move and act more quickly than normal. This extra speed has several effects.

When making a full attack action, a hasted creature may make one extra attack with one natural or manufactured weapon. The attack is made using the creature's full base attack bonus, plus any modifiers appropriate to the situation. (This effect is not cumulative with similar effects, such as that provided by a speed weapon, nor does it actually grant an extra action, so you can't use it to cast a second spell or otherwise take an extra action in the round.)

A hasted creature gains a +1 bonus on attack rolls and a +1 dodge bonus to AC and Reflex saves. Any condition that makes you lose your Dexterity bonus to Armor Class (if any) also makes you lose dodge bonuses.

All of the hasted creature's modes of movement (including land movement, burrow, climb, fly, and swim) increase by 30 feet, to a maximum of twice the subject's normal speed using that form of movement. This increase counts as an enhancement bonus, and it affects the creature's jumping distance as normal for increased speed. Multiple haste effects don't stack. Haste dispels and counters slow.

Two notes. One, I forgot to subtract the -2 penalty for using rapid shot during my prior round of attacks. Two, if it's tactically permissible, Maja would like to have delayed until after Sera casts haste, to fire off one additional attack, and get a +1 bonus to her prior attacks.

Hsated Attack?: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18; Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Though it probably misses anyway.

yes, you can act in any order you choose. I'm going to assume everybody delayed for maximum effect and roll attacks. Unfortunately, Nix is not target able by haste, you have to have line of sight/line of effect to cast a spell on someone. While it makes sense for your characters to be concerned about hitting Nix, rest assured that game mechanics don't take that into account and you can wallop away no problem.

Idris ducks under a splash of fire and a waving tentacle and hammers the fungus twice with unnatural speed as Seraphina's spell takes hold. Moments later, three arrows impact against the tendriculos' hide, doing no real harm.

Ichor and clear fluid weeps out of the tendriculos' wounds, and its massive central trunk seems to be losing structural integrity. You can see damage you've inflicted start to blossom and regenerate, but the licking flames from Pretty's alchemical barrage sear and scar wounds and keep them open.
