Rutilux sees it pretty clearly, "Symbols have meaning, perhaps only because people give it such, but as it might both inspire allies AND demoralize the foe, this crown is invaluable to the cause. More over, it is a piece of our Lord's heritage, and thus has meaning to him as well. I know if some heirloom of my own house could be reclaimed, I would want to chance it, not for idle glory, but to do honor to what was best in my line." He finds himself nodding, and surprised that his allies don't quite see that. Then again, perhaps not all of them know what it is like to lose the very roots of your family tree.

She rode to save me. It took several weeks, but she made me whole."

Zethyris ceases fidgeting at the mention of Dagmar's name. "I am glad to hear Dagmar is well. I suppose with this war there's plenty of healing to be done." A pity it keeps her too busy to adventure more with us, though...

Once Julianda enters the room, Zethyris stands straight and folds his hands in anticipation. Standing quietly as she speaks, he absorbs the details of her message as a sponge absorbs water.

When she has finished, Zethyris places a hand on his chin and thinks aloud. "A scream so terrible that even hardy Ulfen warriors would fear to enter... I could almost say I hope whatever caused that scream is long gone." A wolfish grin comes across Zethyris's face as he continues, "However, defeating the same terror that claimed the crown's thief would make too good a tale to pass up."

"I see you, Rutilux Talonn, and I see what is best in your line. Your actions on and off the battlefield set the standard." Skall thinks on Rutiux's words for a moment. "I do see the importance of a symbol, but I have a concern if the symbol becomes more than the man who bears it." The Ulfen cleric shifts his stance and brings forth the helm he'd kept on a loop at his hip upon entering the room. He stares down at it as though studying a tome. "My father's helm was crushed 3 weeks ago under the paw of a tazylwyrm.   Of my family going back 9 generations there are no more physical representations." He turns the helm in his hands over then places it back at his hip. "Great Gorum saw to it I had a replacement to guard my stubborn head."

He glances up to Rutilux. "Just because I lost the last tangible reminder of my father did not cause me to yield up my throat to the winter beast. I carry my father's blood here," He touches his heart and the veins on his forearm beneath the runic tattoos and brands. "I keep my father's face here," he touches his temple.

"I am sworn to serve, and will do so at his pleasure, but I swore allegiance to a man who unites because he has not forgotten the blood and face of his fathers. A crown, magical or no, will not change who he is as a leader. That is my only point. Symbols are useful, grand in some cases, but Savol himself is a symbol of who we can be as a people."

Skallangbiorn inclines his head towards Rutilux out of respect, sensing that the topic is a personal one to the knight.

Male Human (Thyatian) Fighter 1 (HP:13/13)(AC 20/11t/19ff ; F+4, R+1,W+1 with +2 Bonus vs fear)

Rutilux considers the priest's words, then answers "There is truth to your words, Skallinborn, and poetry as well, which go well together in my mind, but you forget, my family has seen the collapse of once noble Cheliax. Before it fell to diabolism, my family was renowned for their deeds...but when the damned House arose, they attacked not just my kin's lives, but their very history. Lies upon lies were told again and again, slandering us... and then, eventually, unmaking our history so few know House Talonn ever existed. Old estates seized and their ledgers burned, journals and diaries destroyed...'mere things' one might say, yet the view of deeds extends only as far as the eyes of those who see them. Many cannot tell false glory from that justly earned, and even the good deeds of good men might be twisted by opportunists. Were this crown just a part of our liege's legacy and heritage, I would count it enough, but the Linnorm Kings , while certainly fierce and more just than many leaders everywhere, will require evidence of greatness. Indeed, one can not simply CLAIM to have killed a Linnorm, one must do so. Likewise, the warriors of this land , while they SHOULD take the word of our lord, do not know him as we do. Give them something that they can see, and those who have always believed will find that faith rewarded. Those who did not, may join us and make Savol's victory all the swifter. We walk on the knife's edge of honor and real politik, and while I know others may disagree, my heart and head tell me that seeking the Crown of the Kodiakborne serves both."

"Yet, a symbol is not the same as the thing it symbolizes. And a symbol isn't proof of what it symbolizes, either. People may need a symbol to believe. Maybe even Savol himself needs it. And we should give them what they need."

"But still, I agree with Skallangbiorn on this: A piece of glass can kill just like any other weapon. One helmet does the job just as well as another. We can't afford to be sentimental. People are looking for a symbol. And the symbol they will recognize is a crown with the Kodiak's crest on it. But it doesn't need to be the same crown. It just needs to be the same symbol. Thorvald here is a skilled blacksmith. He can make a new symbol."

"People don't even have to know about the difference." she whispers conspiratorially.

She turns towards Julianda again, to repeat her question:
"Julianda, how much do people really know about how this crown looks? How much does Savol? By what would they recognize it?"

"No need to loose time spelunking behind enemy lines, if another crown will do the job just as well."

"I must say, Julian raises a good point. *pigs begin flying* While the crown itself may not hold any special power, it has a story. What would rally more to Savol's campaign: a freshly-forged crown bearing the symbol of the Kodiak, or an ancient once-lost crown snatched from deep within Irrisen's wintery hold? Even if we were to come up with a new crown and claim it was the old one, we would lose out on adding to the story with our own heroics."

"I have no doubt that the eight of us can succeed in this task. Sending all of us makes the crown much more important in the minds of Savol's followers. If it was worth sending his Thanes into enemy territory to retrieve, it must be valuable indeed - even if it wasn't in the first place."

"Like Julian said - we are investing in the story."

"Yes, exactly." Ana agrees with Julian. "The crown becomes powerful if we invest in its story. If we make it the Kodiak's warcrown - and Savol leads his troops into battle with it and defeats the enemy - then it doesn't really matter anymore when and where it was forged. Then it is powerful on its own right. And then would it really still be a fake at all, Rutilux?"

"I don't seek disagreement, Mistress Ana, but my point is more to knowing the heart of our liege. Rutilux, I think, has the right of it. While I would have it that Savol's actions and leadership are enough, there are those who respond to a banner or a crown...proof as it were." Skallangbiorn frowns and shakes his head. "But the last thing we should be considering is a false crown. Should someone do find out, the unmaking of the lie, would be far more difficult than its forging. Besides, I would not follow a man who would accept a falsehood for expediency. Either Savol needs the crown, or he does not."

His frown only deepens at Ana's take on the matter...
fortunately, Skallingborn's comment makes him consider, "Well, it seems to me our liege lord wants the crown. He's left orders to seek it out. "You must understand, the Kodiak clan is still in many ways shattered. When we lost against Irrissen we lost our homeland and much of our clans history. Yes since then great warriors and chieftains have forged new stories and won new victories but the loss still weighs on our ancestors and our honour. You and I know that Savol would never accept a fake crown, heck, the only reason he hasn't gone off by himself to reclaim it is his duty to stay and lead his men. Even now members of the clan are still travelling to join us from distant lands. We have an old story regarding the war-crown that describes it as a mighty half helm forged into a crown by Skaaden Iron-Pelt by mounting the teeth and fangs of the Linnorm his chieftain had slain in a wreath about it. So you should look for an ulfen helm with dragon teeth ringing it like a crown."

Thorvald felt awkward amongst his friends. For some reason he felt they would look at him differently. He was also worried about what had happened to Ana. When she walked towards him he observed a few things that gave him a slight pause, but when she leapt to hug him he returned her embrace whole heartily.

He responded to her touch, but moves her arm around him when she makes the others uncomfortable with her ribaldry.

Ana sighs in resignation. "Fine, we'll do it your way. So how do we get to that cave?"

"Provided that the records are accurate and we've interpreted the landmarks correctly the cave or cavern should be little more than four or five days ride south and east of here before you reach the mountains. A short distance north west of the fort stands a massive wagon. It stands half again as tall as a varissian covered wagon and twice as long with second, matching wagon linked behind it. For all appearances it seems to be a complete shop on wheels. @Arc: Regarding Rose and Rolf

I attempted to address the curses (geas) right before we branched off to the solo tales. Arc, not sure if you had a chance to see if I'd be able to pull it off being a 6th level cleric. Here I'd what I'd posted back then...

□■□■□■ Towards the end of the evening, as exhaustion threatens to claim him, Skallangbiorn seeks the council of the senior cleric in the encampment. With this person, he will begin discussing the possibility of removing the curses under which Rose and Rolf are currently held.

he discussion will gear more towards the general and then to the specific as he describes the types of curses. The ultimate goal to gain insight into using theRemove Curse spell upon them.□■□■□■

So the question is if Skallangbiorn was able to pull it off or was it relegated to other clerics in the camp?

◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆

He contemplates the plan and is thankful for Rutilux and his suggestion to make sure the feint is not a wasted effort. To be honest, Skall almost felt more at home launching into battle with the diversion than sneaking. But he knew being part of this band of warriors is the proper path. A sword knows to which scabbard he belongs.

"Battle is battle, Great Gorum cares not. I don't have any concerns over my identity as a cleric. The dogs of Irrisen will have them in their ranks." He glances to the others and strikes his beard on thought. "We may be able to pass cursory inspection as a traveling band of Acolytes for the Lord in Iron. I see no heresy in the deception for give shed blood at my side and He's blessed out survival."

◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆

Skallangbiorn looks down at his breastplate, then over to the wares of the merchant. The he turns to Rutilux and Thorvald, "My armor marks me as a Blackraven. Perhaps I'll need a change to something less conspicuous?" He thinks a bit further as he eyes the sets of armor in stock. "Of course a tunic or other garment could cover the engraving. But there is the matter of my tattoo along my back. That will be more difficult to explain..."

A little go back since I was unable to post at the time.

Thorvald is happy to be back with his companions again. He inwardly worried that they might reject him. The big man's self esteem had been bruised at the village. Though the village survived, Thorvald had failed to kill either of the Winter Wolves he had fought. One had even escaped unharmed. The village still stood because Thorvald wasn't worth killing.

He simply left because he was bored. . . He went to find better sport elsewhere. "You can keep your town." he said.

The thought of saving the little boy and his family brought a emails to his face though. He wondered if Rutilux, Jediah or Skall would have made the same decision. While he saved three lives that day he wondered how many more might have been saved if he hadn't been invalid for weeks afterwards.

I must try to think that things happen as they do for a reason. Dagmar was there to save me as I was there to save the children and their mother. If we stop valuing life and only think of battle the Ulfen people will be no better than the witches and their minions. . . Still I had better not ask them. They might feel I had failed in my duty to lead those under my authority.

As Ana confidently walked towards Thorvald he found her as beautiful to him as ever. There was a sense of peace about her that had not existed before. However, there was a coldness to her that he had not known except in his dreams. When she finally leapt into his arms he was relieved.

I was afraid she was going to say something about my singed hair or something. I guess I was being silly. She is the one woman who sees beyond my looks and scars and sees what I have to offer inside. Well, maybe Dagmar did, but she was never interested in me. Thank you Shelyn for returning her to me and to you Desna for giving her the peace she so desired.

"Am I really so transparent?"

Thorvald puts his arm around Ana and lifts her hand to his cheek and holds it there for a moment savoring her soft touch.

"My mind is constantly in thought. I am always comparing my life and actions to those of the heroes I have read of. I often revisit things that have happened to myself, rethink things I have done, those kind of things. I like to think of things I may create. But, those things do not haunt me and that's not what you asked me about."

"Just now I was thinking that I didn't want to have to be separated from you again. . . I know that our lives might require it, but when we were apart I worried for you and I realized I am . . . More vulnerable than I would like to admit when I am by myself."

Thorvald pursed his lips and looks about to make sure no one else, but Ana could hear. Then, apparently having made a decision, he lowers his eyes and speaks from his heart.

"Ah, I will try to tell you . . . I will try to speak and be understood, because I trust that you always try to hear and understand me. Please just ask me to explain more if I fail to make myself clear."

"I protected the town I was sent to hold, but it's survival wasn't due to combat prowess and steel nerves like Jediah's or leadership skill and the love of my men like Rutilux invokes. I did my best, but in the end the town survived because the werewolf lord waited for me to heal after I got myself almost burned to death. Then after I had healed up he challenged me to single combat. Part of me wants to believe that I could have won if I had been armed with a magical weapon, but part of me thinks I was just being toyed with the entire time. He smashed me like I imagine Savol could if I ever trespassed against him. Then he withdrew his forces."

"You see, he left me alive because I wasn't even worth his effort to kill."

Thorvald is obviously ashamed.

He left the town intact because he was bored and went elsewhere."

"All my life I have struggled to win the favor of others. I used to pray I would one day be like Rutilux. I would have died to be able to make friends as easily and seem as smooth and engaging as Zethyris."

"I am guessing you already know my self esteem and image of my self was bad enough as it was. It hurts to think that I was not even worth killing. I know that is hard to understand for most people. But, worst than that I felt like the others might reject or mock me. I have never had a group of friends like I have now. I don't want to lose them or their respect. But the most terrible thing was . . . and this is no fault of yours I need you to understand . . . I was afraid you would . . . see me differently, or be disgusted."

Thorvald taps the weathered ancient breastplate he has worn since he joined the party.

"Under this armor I bear the scars of being eaten by two giant winter wolves who were literally pulling me apart. A burning building collapsed on top of me while I was saving a woman, her infant and her toddler. I got them out, but I almost died in the process and may have succumbed to the burns if not for Dagmar Riding to my aid."

"I left the battle to do that. That left the Irrissian who was setting fires free to continue his rampage. Practically half the town was burnt or scorched. If Savol knew, would he charge that I abandoned my post to do what I had done?"

"I know it is water under the bridge and I should let it go. Had I not stopped to help the woman I am sure I would have been haunted by that instead."

"I guess you know the rest. The werewolf lord broke almost every piece of equipment and more than a few of my bones . . . I guess I am saying our time apart didn't make me any better looking on the outside and left me almost as broken on the inside."

"Luckily Dagamar's assistant had remained behind and healed me once again. Savol's reinforcements arrived soon after. The townspeople cheered me and thanked me. It was something I have wanted to hear my whole life, but the sound was bitter sweet to my ears."

"I hadn't saved them. Their town still stood because the Werewolf Lord was so bored he couldn't even finish me off and left to find his sport somewhere else. I was out of the fight for weeks. How many died because I stopped to save one family when I was supposed to be protecting an entire town of families. How many other families burned because I wasn't there to fight off the attackers?"

"I came back to camp here, but Julianda didn't know what to do with me. She sent me back to Twyed. Thankfully Toopil took me under his wing, helped me remake Wintersbane and myself anew."

"I had to sacrifice a part of my life force in the process. I knew what I was doing. Now I have a weapon that can help me fight, but I wish I was the weapon not just the tool who uses it."

"I learned that the North demands sacrifices of those who live here. Pain like I've never felt from being burned alive, the feeling of my life draining away into the steel of my sword, like the pain of being separated from the one person I feel looks past what I am on the outside and values me for what I am."

"Here I am rambling about what happened to me and I don't even know what you had to endure. I saw you had found some way to find peace and you had a bit more serious aspect to you when I first saw you. I let my insecurities start to get the best of me."

"I thought about standing with you on the battlements a lot."

"I also thought of the dream in which I was the dancing bear."

"I didn't want to die without seeing you again. I thought about how you and I together could have killed the wolves and their lord. I prayed a lot."

"I was giving thanks to Shelyn and Desna for returning you to me and that you are stronger and more beautiful than ever before."

Thorvald smiles and lets his eyes meet Ana's.

"You have found your peace and I believe I have mine back, now that you are here."

"Well, that's sweet. But if you want my advice on it: don't depend too much on the presence of others for your inner peace. It's too unreliable."

Feeling this might come across the wrong way, she hastily adds:
"I mean: What if I'm no longer here tomorrow? What if a dragon snatches me and swallows me whole? I would want you to cut me out of its belly again. Or, if thats not an option, to live your life happily without me. But I wouldn't want you to wither in self-doubt."

She takes a moment to think about his story, then she say:
"What do you think, why was that werewolf toying with you of all people? Wasn't it because he considered you the most worthy opponent? And why do you think he let you live? If he was merely bored with you, he could have let his men finish you and that village. But he let you live. So that you would recover, that your strength and your anger would grow, and that you eventually would seek revenge."

"That werewolf has an interest in you. He likes you. He is courting you."

"You might not like to be that werewolf's favorite plaything. But that is what saved that village. It was the only way to save it. If you couldn't defeat him, then Jediah or Rutilux couldn't have done it either. They just were lucky to face different enemies. We are at war, people get hurt. Treat a broken ego the same way you would treat a broken bone. Recover quickly, and think of what remains as honorable scars."

"And make up your mind: when you meet that werewolf again, will you fight him again? Will you get your revenge - and give him the pleasure he seeks? Or will you deny it to him? Because even if you kill him in a duel, dying at your hands will somehow be a victory to him."

"I will fight of course and this time it will be different. My sword was made with borrowed strength before, now it is made with my own as well."

"Nevermind the rest . . . you asked what I was thinking and so I told you. Thank you for your thoughts on it. I have survived a long time holding my own counsel so you need not worry. It is just nice not to have to do so now."

". . . Hummm, maybe when I burried my sword in his heart he knew I would have been able to win. You are right. He is still out there waiting, watching . . . and I guess it doesn't matter to the people how they survived. They are still free of the Witches' yolk and draw air."

"Do you care to share what happened to you while you were gone? I heard you can summon fire to scour the battlefield."

Thorvald missed what Ana had said to the rest of the group about it.

"Oh! I almost forgot."

Thorvald holds up the intact masks taken from Ana's sister's bodyguard.

"Remember these masks from the dwarven city? We could use these as part of our disguise right? Julian could pass for one of those monk guards I'll bet."

"I have no doubt that you will slay this werewolf the next time you face each other. And if that will be all it takes to put your heart at ease, so much the better."

Ana gives a brief account of her adventures. The story revolves around her various hit and run attacks, the ones where she pointed out enemy casters, as well as the ones where she threw fireballs at the enemy herself. About her time with Anabella she says nothing.

Before Thorvald has a chance to inquire how she first learned to create fireballs, she changes the subject:
"How was your stay in Tweyd? Any news from the fey - or our ambassador we left with them?"

Concerning the mask she says:
"You kept that? Yes, that could be useful indeed. But before you let Julian wear that, let me check something..."

Ana places the mask before her and casts detect magic on it.

Thovald's roll

"I didn't hear anything about the fey or your friend that stayed with the fey, but to be fair I was quite busy at the forge and didn't think to ask."

"Yeah I kept the intact ones. At the time we didn't have a way to wear them because they were attached right to the skin of their faces, but with a forge and an entire shop I had a chance to fix that. I figured they could prove useful, especially if it eats Julian's face or better yet his tongue! Heh, heh, just kidding, though having a chance to be away from him for a bit was refreshing."

"After we go to see what the merchant has we have tonight and until tomorrow evening to ourselves. It would be a shame to waste it. I have a bottle of wine, some aged cheese and some treats I traded work for. I am sure we will have dinner scheduled for us, but afterwards . . ."

Bluff: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29
That was easy.

"Ha ha. But seriously: as much as we'd all like him to shut up, Julian as he is is still better than a silent Julian being mind controlled by the enemy to assassinate us all."

"Is it good wine? I don't want to be dismissive about your culture. So don't get me wrong: Ulfen mead is great. But real wine made out of grapes goes better with cheese."

"Well it is wine made out of grapes. I figured you would desire something a little more refined than mead or spirits for a romantic evening. As far as how good it is? I guess we won't know until we uncork it and try some. My people do make some excellent ice wines by the way. It's probably not as nice as many of the wines you've had avalible to you in the past, but it is here and so are we. I suppose it can wait though."

"Do you want to see what the merchant has for sale? He might have a new dress even."

Thorvald smiles.

"Lets go then. I hope I can get a dress in Irrisenian fashion. If we run into local peasants during our mission, I want to be able to convince them that I am genuine Jadwiga royalty."

Complete shopping list:

- disguise kit
- Jadwiga royalty costume
- black rider costume
- red rider costume
- white rider costume
- a combat trained horse
- jewelry and gemstones for 1.500 gp *
- re-stocking up to 50 crossbow bolts (not sure how many she has left)
- climbing kit
- the scroll of fireball, if nobody else wants to buy it
- the amulet of natural armor, but only if it does stack with her existing natural armor bonus and nobody else wants to buy it

*: Assuming that jewelry and gemstones count as trade goods and can be converted back into the same amount of gold later. The idea here is not only to get lots of shiny things, but also to have something to barter with that is less suspicious than Ulfen coins.

@ARC: let me know how much of this is available - and how much I will have to pay out of my own money.

"Yes, but I don't want them to recognize me as that runaway princess. Probably, I'm a cautionary tale they tell their children about, by now. And the Absalonian fashion I brought with me would be a dead giveaway, just as much as the Ulfen fashion I got since I came here would be."

At the mercantile.
Thorvald sees Skallingbiorn looking over the suit of armor.

"That is a fine suit of scale armor, as stout as any suit of plate mail I have seen made and far more flexible. I would be proud to wear it, but I am a sentimental type. I found this ancient breastplate, it has served me well since my first battle and it was enchanted for me in return for my service to the Kodiakborn. Not to mention it never yielded to the Werewolf Lord's hammer. A bit of fate or luck in that. Perhaps the spirit of our ancestors who forged or wore it still resides in it and protected me."

Thorvald eyes the suit and inspects its construction.

Nothing is as Ulfen as a good suit of scale. Not much different than what our forefathers donned a millennia ago."

"I don't know how much we have to spend, but this would serve you well. I don't think Rutilux will wear it because he has his magnificent suit of plate. Jediah has his half plate that I reworked. It is as stout as this though I think, perhaps a little less so. I think he may be the only other person interested in it."

Thorvald moves over to the Amulet of Natural Armor+2

"But this here is something we should not let go. Any of us can wear it. It can boost any of our armor's, weighs little, and is easily passed around. Ana is the easiest person to strike in combat. I would like her to have it. My own feelings for her aside, she is a high value target. The kind likely to sprout feathers. Think of it though, we could let Julian or Zethyris wear it if one of them was sent forward."

"I have quite a bit of gear for the trail we picked up before that Shaggy horse can carry. Always good to have a spare heavy horse. I think we need to get you a heavy war trained mount of your own."

Thorvald grips Julian firmly by the shoulder and envelopes him in a jovial bear hug.

grapple: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27

"Come here you! Always popping up unannounced like a toadstool in the morning you are. Heh heh."

Thorvald sets him down.

"I have thought a lot about our last parting and it was strained to say the least. I am genuinely glad to see you again and hope we can start anew. I will try to be more open to your ways if you will try to be more respectful of mine, but enough of that past."

"I have been dying to tell you how impressive your slaying of the winterwolf was. I had a chance to take two on and only wounded one before they both escaped. I was set on getting you a new winterwolf tail and nearly got eaten for my troubles. I vastly underestimated how deadly they were up close. I sure could have used your bow at the Seige of Greyson's Landing. Let's just say it was a high target environment."

"And you are both correct and incorrect about the sword."

Thorvald unsheathes Wintersbane and offers it by the hilt to Skallangbiorn.

"The original sword is still here, but worked into the blade. It was sundered and reborn. Wintersbane is now Kodiak Steel and possessed of a part of my own life energies. The blade was given Gorum's due. . . See the fire that still burns within it, but it remains cool to the touch. When I give myself over to the spirit of battle the sword does as well. And should our cold wrought enemies come near us, Wintersbane will burn embers. It hates them as much as I do. Luckily though it doesn't imitate my looks. Heh heh heh. I know I am biased, but have you seen a more formidable longsword? Give it a few swings and feel its balance, but be careful it is as sharp as any razor you've shaved with."

"When you are done getting a feel for it please pass it to Julian. Of course until you see me wield it I cannot show you the true extent of its beauty."

"Did you bring anything new back with you from your travels Julian?"

"Wow, I had not noticed your new armor earlier. You should be more secure in that than if I fashioned you a suit from a cast iron sewer pipe. I heard you made a stand worthy of a Skald Epic. I know you are not one for telling tales, but I would like to hear it from your lips one day."

I am glad I spoke to Ana, I feel better about this already. I need have no shame . . . And next time, next time it will be different.

I think saving the family would fall under charity to the meek and I honorably gave my best effort to Greyson's Landing. I bet Rutilux lead his men on glorious charges and inspired them with his grace and leadership. He certainly looks like the knights described in the southern novels.

"New armor, and a new ring under the gauntlet. The latter a symbol of something that must yet be won," Indeed, under his tabard and cloak, the observant can note a set of full plate, crafted as if just for Rutilux judging by how well it fits.
