"I can make such a request, but I doubt at this point they'd grant it. For now, we are on our own."

Female Human Cleric of Erastil 4

"I appreciate your concern Talia," Asha begins, "but Erastil will provide. I will reach out to the creatures of the forest, I will be fine." She smiles warmly. "Besides, what better way to begin taming this land than establishing a temple?"

"Maybe we can take Asha quickly to the temple while Dregan makes his trip."
RP-only, a good way of "resting" two days, don't you think?

Gavriil gave a big sarcastic grin to Kesten, "Well, that makes me feel a whole lot better!"

Gavriil inwardly groaned at Magna's suggestion. While Dregan got to go off and play hubby with a roof over his head, they'd be galloping all across the Stolen Lands? That didn't sound so fair to him. He sipped his mead and said, "Hmmm.... that does sound fun, buuuuut how about we don't get ahead of ourselves. I know we've been here a while but I'm not sure any of us would be able to get there and back through the woods without our guide here, darling," He continued counting out his share of the gold they were paid. "Besides, I think we've earned a day or two of rest, and I'm sure Oleg and Svetlana will be pleased if we stayed for a bit to empty our newly full purses."

He turned to Dregan, "You go have fun with your wifey, Dregan, we'll hold down the fort till you get back. Then we can take Asha to shrine and then do a bit of exploring."

Talia spends the next couple of days writing. Writing of their trip from Restov; the humiliation at the hands of the Haps and her eventual rescue; their raid on Kressel and the bandit camp; the temple and its man-bear guardian; and the groups new friends - Kesten, the guards, the reformed bandits and Nat. Talia takes special care to describe the landscape they've encountered too - the rolling plains around Oleg and the nearby majestic old growth forest.

Sighing, Talia puts her quill down and starts leafing through the parchment, surprised at how easily the words have transferred from her mind to the page. It's good. It is actually pretty damn good. There's a great tale still to be told, obviously, but it is a strong beginning.

Gavriil spent his days in simplicity. He lazed around the fort, entertaining himself by laying out in the sun and watching the clouds roll by. He'd smile easy when he could pick out creatures from the clouds' shapes. Nostalgia of his youth had him gripped firmly in its grasp, reminding him of the simple times when he could just run amok with his friends in the streets of New Stetvon. His mind raced through the winding streets as his drifted in and out of sleep.

Not the entire day could be slept away, though. After a while, Gavriil found himself bored. He lulled through the grounds, checking in on everyone, but they all seemed busy. Magna was there hammering away at her forge, which seemed too much work for him. Talia had locked herself away in a room, scribbling madly at sheets of paper. The intensity that she wrote made that look like harder work than Magna's blacksmithing.

He even tried Nora! He picked up a stick, waving it in the air in front of her before throwing it across the compound, saying, "Go on! Fetch!" But to no avail. The fox stayed rooted by her master's side.

Finally, not knowing what else to do, he asked Svetlana for a bottle of mead. He paid the requested amount and then stopped short. He turned to her and asked, "Do you know what this place needs? Music! You wouldn't happen to have a lute in your shop would you?"

Svetlana looks at Gavriil curiously. "Why yes, we do! It was ordered by a trapper who never came back. Would you like to see it?"

Male Human Swashbuckler 5/ Shadowdancer 1[Hp: 41/46; AC: 23 Tch: 18 Flt: 17; Fort: +1 Ref: +9 Will: +2; Panche 4/5]

Gavriil beams at the answer, "Yes, if you have the time to spare." He had only picked up a lute once or twice over the years, and had only ever learned how to tune it and strum a few chords, but it would give his idle hands something to do.

After talking for a moment she disappears and returns with a small glass vial and Dregan hands over some of his coin then leaves in a gallop, the sores and fatigue from the morning ride ignored. Purchases some perfume as a present for Mary, subtracted 5 gold.

Dregan is does not return as promised the next even but when the first people wake the next morning they find him boiling water for tea on a small fire a little way from the gates.

Mother,

It is with great pride that I write to you. I have taken up with a group, some from the original charter, some new, and together, we have rid the northern Greenbelt of the bandit menace, though there is still a self-styled "Bandit King" by the name of the Stag Lord to be rooted out.

There is room here, in the northern Greenbelt, for a more stable presence, as evidenced by one Kesten Garess and his men. A lawman, I've not heard of Garess before, but his men alluded to something happening up north. Can you look into this for me? I wish to know the content of the character of the men charged with protecting us.

We are located at a trading post on the road from Restov - an out of the way place run by a rather gruff man by the name of Oleg, and his charming wife, Svetlana. What she sees in him, I know not, but of course the heart wants what it wants. Oleg and Svetlana cater mostly to trappers and hunters that work the nearby lands and forest to the south.

My companions have proven to be an able bunch. Our scout, Dregan, is a lowborn man from nearby - his wife resides a day or so's ride from the Trading Post. He's strong on the saddle and with a bow, and has guided us safely through rolling plains and majestic woods.

Naralesh, the mage, is wise and handy with a spell or bow in a pinch. More than anyone, he's responsible for the scattering of the bandits camped nearby - his command of magic is strong. His council has also proven invaluable.

Magna, our knight, a shieldmaiden pledged to Torag, is honorable and kind, seeing redemption in those I am afraid I cannot. She's also the point of our sword, and brave to a fault. I fear for those that cross her.

Gavriil is our rake. He reminds me of some of the good-time gents that spend their lives in the arts, but there is more there, below the surface, than just parties and women, I'm sure of it. He's also handy with a fencing blade, though I suspect that I could best him in a duel.

Soon, we leave to take our Priestess of Erastil, Asha, to a temple in the old growth forest to the south (which as an aside, I'm thinking of calling Deadeye Forest, in honor of the grand edifice there). Asha, a young woman blinded by faith, intends to live at the temple. It is for this reason that I write. Can you spare us a handful of guardsmen for her safety, just until we can kill this presumptive Bandit King? I fear for Asha, and someone must - like all zealots, her devotion leaves her overconfident.

The payback for our House, will of course be worth a handful of guards. Influence with this new temple to the south will strengthen our hand in the future, especially if a war or brothers comes to the north...

I hope that this letter finds you well. Give my fondest wishes to my sisters. The warm winds of summer blow from the south, rustling the dead grass of these plains, while new greenery peeks up from underneath. It is quite beautiful here - an endless expanse of rippling amber. I cannot bear to see what beauty beholds us at its verdant height.

With great respect, your daughter-

Talia

As Talia signs her name, the ill-sounding strumming of a lute comes to the young woman's ears. Grimacing, she makes her way outside to find Gavriil plucking and strumming. "Well, its not... horrible, but you need some practice. Honestly, I figured you'd be more of a fiddler than a lute player. You need some accompaniment."

"Made my way from Restov proper
Down into this Stolen Land
'Crossed amber plains and piney forests
Dodgin' tiny dragons an' bandit lords..."

Gavriil held the lute out at arms' length. His hands rolled over the wood of it with a glint of child's wonder in his eyes. The sight of the instrument brought back memories of bards rolling through town playing ballads of great heroes who performed even greater deeds. Stories that as a boy had held him firmly in their grasps. Those tales had called to him, always hanging the idea that he too could be a hero just out of reach. He thanked Svetlana profusely and paid whatever she had asked for it and rushed outside.

I'm going to buy the lute and about 10 days trail rations

He settled himself with his feet up under the sun and began to tune the instrument. Once he was satisfied with the tuning, he began trying to remember the chords that he had learned. His fingers, unaccustomed to the bite of the strings clumsily rolled over them, making piercing noises. The scoundrel paid them no heed, his head rolling through memories of thousands of tavern songs he had heard over the years.

Before he knew it, he had an audience member. He looked up to Talia when she gave him the back-handed compliment and smiled. He knew he was no good, but his companions would just have to grit their teeth as he got the hang of it. "Accompaniment," he said with a sly smile, "would be perfect, if you know anyone who could sing."

Without retort, the actress slipped into an impromptu song. His fingers scrambled to find a tune on the instrument that matched her melody, but failed miserably.

It did not help that he was distracted by Talia's voice. It lilted and rang through the song, creating beauty he couldn't hope to match on his lute in his wildest dreams.

And just like that, it was over.

Gavriil placed his lute back into it's case to try and hide the sudden blush of embarrassment on his face. Completely caught off guard, he struggled to come up with a witty comment and instead said, "Thank you. That was more beautiful than I've heard in a long while."

Realizing that he was being foolish, he cleared his throat and quickly stood to move his lute away. As he parted from the bard, though, he shot her back a quick wink and said, "For someone who was fed with a silver spoon, that is"

Before she could respond he turned to walk away. The actress a continuing puzzle to him.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The next morning, he woke last again. He came out to see that most everyone was already saddled and ready to head out. He quickly got his things together and saddled up just as Magna and Talia were discussing what they were going to do. He nodded to the others and said, "Well, let's get to it, then. Talia won't be able to finish our song if we just sit here and not give her something to sing about."

The forest breaks away into the rolling plains of the northern Greenbelt. The day is spent exploring in the rain, a storm that blew up from the south. At times the wind gusts, driving the rain sideways along the ground. No matter which way you turn, it always seems to be in your face.

The wind shifts, and the smell comes on quickly, a full-on assault on Talia's nose, like a dog fart in a carriage. Wincing and covering her nose, Talia smirks. "Good thing for Asha her temple isn't here!"

1 Gozran 4707

As the party emerges from the treeline, Talia follows Dregan's outstretched finger, pointing to dark clouds gathered to the south. Swell, Talia thinks, and wraps her traveling cloak tightly around her body, knowing it will to do no good.

When the storm comes, it comes with furious strength. Lightning flashes across the plains, followed soon by great cracking and rolling bursts of thunder, reminiscent to the playwright of the spring thaw on the Shrike River near her House's country manor - great cracking, grinding masses of ice that would tumble downstream, destroying any barges overwintered in the wrong place.

It would be awe-inspiring were the woman not so gods damned miserable - wrapping her sodden cloak ever tighter, Talia lets the others handle the exploring, content to curse the fates that led her to this point. Not a gods damned thing is going to be out in this weather anyways.

2 Gozran 4707

More rain. Biting on her glove to stop her chattering teeth, Talia sits glumly around their dark campsite, silently pleading to Gozreh to end this misery.

3 Gozran 4707

Talia pleads to Gozreh, Besmara, Erastil, and Desna. By mid-day, she's composed a particulary biting monologue in her head, damning the gods, nature, the Green Faith, the Surtovas, the Fates, treeless plains, and charters, damnable stupid charters that made this whole trip necessary in the first place. So in her head by this point, she barely notices the first rays of sunshine, but grins maniacally when Naralesh points them out.

The fire that night is the best she's known in her short, strange life.

4 Gozran 4707

No dry clothes, no problem. There's a morning fire to take the chill out of her soggy clothes, and warm tea to assuage Talia's scratchy throat. Magna's upbeat nature and Gavriil's bawdy songs make the day pass by, and the night comes quickly, the sunset over in minutes, deep shades of purple in the sky fading into black. Talia decides to scuttle her biting monologue against the gods - she might need them later.

The wind follows on the heels of the storm. Gusting across the plains, tearing at your gear. It's near impossible to use the map with the gusts, and the noise of it howling in your ears is incredible.

6 Gozran 4707

The wind dies down to a mere howl as opposed to the hurricane yesterday. Late in the day, Dregan spots something amid a patch of wild blackberry. It is a door - an ancient stone door, leading into what may be a turf-covered mound.

Talia kneels by Magna as the knight begins slowly tracing her finger around the door. "There, perhaps, a latch? Is that a hinge or knob... or a clod of dirt? I'm pretty sure it is a door, so there should be a way to open it."

Sadly, the playwright knows little of the construction of doors, let alone ancient doors, and only states what must be painfully obvious to Magna.

The door is old, very old. A thin cover of lichen is spread over the lower half. It hasn't been opened in many years. There are rumors of ancient cairns in the Greenbelt holding great treasures...
