Female Half-Orc Battle Oracle 2

Lilley can't help but overhear the well-dressed man talking about her as she moves the planks to cover the pit. "How can I speak a language I never learned?" she protests. "It is ... difficult for me to speak clearly around ... these." She raises a hand to hesitantly indicate her tusks. "When I am exercised, no doubt I am less careful with my speech, and you cannot understand me. And what is so fascinating about my name?"

"I don't know how that's possible, honestly. And I find that even more fascinating! Now, you mention your tusks as if you've had to get used to them. Which means, you haven't always had them?" Rajah ponders that a moment. "Okay that makes no sense, BUT, it still leaves the question as to why you would speak of them in such a way." He puts a finger to his lips, tapping them while he attempts to come up with something a bit more sane. After just a moment he decides to think on it later, "Anyway, now as far as your name... well... it sounds... elvish. There aren't many half-orcs with elvish backgrounds so I'm guessing one of your parents was elven instead of human. You see? I've known very few half-orcs in my day--far more half-elves mind you--but those that I've come across have never had a name such as you. Now having said that, that's where the fascination of your name comes into being! Just within your name alone lies a tale that truly must be nothing short of fantastic!" He smiles greatly at the possibility.

The man's face falls again at Kenji's words. His pockets were already empty, so he simply removes his belt of vials filled with various colored liquids.

He remains silent as the ropes are tied around him, completely ignoring Rajah's attempt to engage him in conversation.

Never made a Con save for Rhen...doing that now.

Con Save: 1d20 + 2 - 9 ⇒ (14) + 2 - 9 = 7

Rhen's breathing grows more ragged before it stops completely.

Rhen's not dead - yet. It's up to you whether you save him or not.

Rajah channelled energy so he should already be stable (previous page).

Female Half-Orc Battle Oracle 2

Link to Rajah's channel. Should have given Rhen back 2 hp and made him stable.

Lilley pauses, a plank suspended inches above the stone floor. "My mother was an elf," she admits finally, settling the piece in place and sliding it next to its neighbor. "I never knew her. My father named me Lilley."

"Fantastic! Well, not so much as you not ever knowing your mother, I'm truly sorry to hear that. Your father, hm? That's even more fascinating." He crinkles his face as more questions arise. Rajah then remembers the unconscious dwarf. "Um... one moment. I'll be back."

Moving over to where Rhen is to check the nature of his wounds, "I can have him healed up in no time. Of course, if we are to carry him back up to the Pharasmin priests with our necroalchemist friend, their healers can care for him a bit more properly than myself. What do you all suggest?"

Female Half-Orc Battle Oracle 2

"Save your healing until we know what we find past the pit," Lilley advises, setting the last of the planks in place and eyeing them dubiously, wondering how much weight they will bear. "If the dwarf is in no danger at the moment, one of us might yet find ourselves in greater need. When we are back in safety, whether you or the Pharasmins heal him is of little matter, as long as he is healed."

I say don't use any more healing on him now. Lucendar's obviously decided not to come back, so bringing Rhen back to consciousness will only make the GM have to run him again, and if we run into another fight, one of the actual PCs might need the healing.

Male Human Admixture Wizard1/Crossblooded Tatooed Sorcerer

Fair enough

Female Half-Orc Battle Oracle 2

That's assuming he is, in fact, stable. I mean, we're a good-aligned party; we're not going to let him die to save healing for ourselves.

Male Human (Ulfen) Occultist

I agree with the no more healing, and that we've a duty of care to get him topsides.

Stirgen listens to the words exchanged between Lilley and the Rajah... unsure whether the time and place is appropriate to discuss the finer details of genealogy... but attentive all the same. At the conclusion he adds "We should turn this one over to the Pharasmin as soon as possible, though of course after we have ensured we draw all possible information from his workshop." hands shifting uneasily on his axe "I would not want his eyes on my back if we met danger in front."

He's stable. Thanks for the link/reminder.

The planks fit in place perfectly - there are wide grooves in the floor on both sides of the pit that keep them from slipping or moving. The planks are thick and heavy, clearly thick enough to support significant weight.

There doesn't appear to be much of worth in the laboratory other than the texts and notes Kenji has in his possession and the numerous alchemical implements the man was using.

If you would like, you could remove all of the alchemical tools and you would have a complete, functioning alchemy lab.

Male Human Admixture Wizard1/Crossblooded Tatooed Sorcerer

These tools hold some value. We should take them to the mage school where they would be worth somethimg to both us and the apprentices. Mean time, let's look in the bedroom. A smart foe who heard him cry has either fled or if no exit is available may have prepared for battle.

Female Half-Orc Battle Oracle 2

"You would discuss the disposal of a man's prized possessions in his very presence?" Lilley chides the wizard with an apologetic glance at the necroalchemist. "He is obviously a man of intelligence; if he were to apply his efforts through more appropriate channels, he might put these tools to use for the benefit of others. At any rate, the dismantling and transport of such delicate equipment is better done when we don't have a prisoner to guard; we can come back down for it when he is safely in custody."

First over the bridge: Lilley and Bastarger? Does someone want to stay on this side to keep an eye on the tied-up guy and Rhen?

Male Human (Ulfen) Occultist

Stirgen has volunteered for guard duty

Female Half-Orc Battle Oracle 2

Let's go find Esme, then.

Lilley waits for the gnome to cross the pit first, as sturdy as the planks seem, still not trusting them to bear her weight along with his. She holds her glaive poised for action but hopes that, if anything is to be found in the bedroom, it will be inert like the zombies in the vats rather than lurking readily.

10-ft corridor, so put Lilley one square diagonally behind Bastarger if he's wielding a non-reach weapon out of his arsenal.

Male Gnome Fighter (Mobile), HP23/23, AC 20 (24), FF 18 (22), Touch 13, CMD 16, F +4, R +1, W +0, Init +3, Perception +3, AOO +6 (+4)

Bastarger advanced with his shield stowed away, a two-handed, Elven style blade clasped in both hands.

I'm assuming everyone but Stirgen followed. If not, we can fix it as needed.

This large chamber has a vaulted ceiling, and unlike the rest of the ossuary, bears a distinct impression of habitation rather than abandonment. Lit candelabras reveal old tapestries hanging from the walls to ward off the subterranean chill, and a threadbare carpet covers the floor. Shabby furniture—a few chairs and tables, an armoire, and a dresser—flanks a large canopied bed in the center of the room, topped with satin sheets and a heap of lumpy pillows.

As you enter, you spot a humanoid figure trying to hide in the corner. It holds a candelabra raised in one arm, as if to attack. Though, it is very clearly terrified of the loud clanking noise your group made as it walked down the hall. You also spot two skeletons, standing idly in the room.

"Please, don't hurt me," The humanoid says - a female - says. She steps from the corner.

You see a strange sight - she is clearly an undead creation, but she appears to have retained her intelligence even though her physical body has died and been animated as a putrid, rotting zombie.

"Please. I am Esme. Svilennius' wife. But I don't want to die."

Getting a closer look at Esme, you see she was once a beautiful young woman, but her skin is now rotting and putrid, and her once-lustrous blonde hair rank and lifeless. She does her best to conceal the decay beneath heavy makeup and cloying perfumes, but it’s a lost cause. Her clothing and jewelry are formal — once fashionable, but seeming garish and vulgar on her decomposing body.

Updated Map

She awaits your response and slightly lowers the candelabra.

Female Half-Orc Battle Oracle 2

"Hy kon haar nie laat gaan...." Lilley whispers, seemingly stricken by the sight. Then she leans her glaive against the wall and takes a step around the gnome, her hands raised and open, palms out, to show she means no harm. "We don't want to kill you," she reassures her gently. "What do you want?"

Orc:
"He couldn't let her go...."

Drop glaive in T 37; move to R 38

Male Human (Ulfen) Occultist

Stirgen stands a watchful sentinel, and occasionally sneers at the alchemancer.

Male Human Admixture Wizard1/Crossblooded Tatooed Sorcerer

You are aware of what you are now? How could your husband curse you with this unlife?
Kenji speaks past the others but does not enter. She was still a zombie or was she?

Rajah looks upon the woman with sadness. "My dear woman, I am so sorry." Never knowing of a zombie to own any sort of intelligence, Rajah knows this must be difficult for her. "Yes, what can we do to help? Please, we'll do whatever we are able."

Move to S 37

Kenji:

She is, indeed, a zombie. But it appears she has somehow retained her intelligence. She was not raised via normal Necromancy means.

The woman - Esme - grips her "weapon" firmer. "Stay back. Your words sound as honey, but your intentions are not as they seem. You are agents of Pharasma, are you not? You've come to seek and destroy all undead?"

Responding to Kenji, she says, "Curse me? He tried to save me! I have looked as you see me now since I was a young woman. He did not curse me. The disease is - was - my curse."

She falters slightly. "Do you really want to help me?" Her voice sounds hopeful, if still frightened.

Female Half-Orc Battle Oracle 2

Moving slowly so as not to startle Esme, Lilley raises her hand to the ring around her neck and holds it out to the length of the chain so that the woman can see it, taking a step closer if she will allow it. "The Pharasmins hired us, but I have given my devotion to Shelyn since my childhood. She values love that looks beyond appearances and faithfulness that does not fail when it faces adversity. The one who is guarding your husband and our injured companion," she nods back down the hallway toward the laboratory, "he also serves Shelyn," her lips curl in a bitter smile, "although two less likely worshippers of the Eternal Rose you may be hard pressed to find."

Esme relaxes considerably at Lilley's words. "I too was a follower of Shelyn. I believe you." She lowers the candelabra and says, "Lulu, Fiona. Go stand by the bed." The skeletons shamble over to the bed and continue to stand idly.

"Now, how shall we proceed?"

Female Half-Orc Battle Oracle 2

Lilley gives an uncertain glance at the wizard and the priest, feeling they are more qualified to offer an expert opinion than is she. "The Pharasmins wish to reclaim this level of their catacombs so you cannot stay here," she advances tentatively, "but you could come back with me to Ankar-Te, where the Twice-Born walk the streets and your appearance wouldn't draw a second glance. Until you knew what you wanted to do next."

"Yes. I...I would like that, I think. Get out of this crypt. But how will you make that happen? Surely I can't walk out with you as you leave this place, can I?"

Realizing what she is saying, she covers her mouth with her hands. "But what of Svilennius? What will you do with - or to - him?" Her head falls, "What will I tell him? How can I leave his side?"

Female Half-Orc Battle Oracle 2

"Tell him that you'll wait for him," she responds immediately. "That you'll be there when his time is served. I do not know how harsh is the penalty for graverobbing," she looks at the others tentatively, "but he surrendered rather than fighting to the death. Our testimony must be worth something. As for the other, perhaps the staircase your husband has been using? He says the Pharasmins don't know of it. If we led you out that way before telling them of it...?" She looks to the cleverer party members for improvements to her rudimentary plan.

Stirgen, want to roll a check to see what kind of sentence the necroalchemist might be looking at? I think you're the only one with Knowledge (local) with Rhen unconscious. We need to get back out there where you are, but Lilley mentioned it in your presence before heading down the hallway. Maybe Rajah could roll Knowledge (religion) to know what kind of penalty the Pharasmins might be looking to impose?

Male Human (Ulfen) Occultist

Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18

Stirgen:

You know that the Pharasmans will be harsh on Svilennius. He is not guilty of just graverobbery, but of interfering with the laws governing life and death. Pharasmans are not famous for their mercy.

Male Human (Ulfen) Occultist

Stirgen will fill Lilley in when she comes back. It's not looking too good for the alchenecro.

Male Human Admixture Wizard1/Crossblooded Tatooed Sorcerer

Liley's suggestion is sound. I am not local, but there are districts where you could exist without persicution. Going thereis a good idea.

Rajah, you can read/know Stirgen's spoiler.

"Wait for him?" Esme laughs. "You mean, wait for him to be reanimated as I was? The Pharasmans will not look kindly on his experiments. They will kill him."

She looks anxiously down the hallway behind you. "He surrendered, you say?" She looks surprised - and maybe even a little fearful. "May I...may I go to him?"

Female Half-Orc Battle Oracle 2

Lilley looks downcast that no one is speaking up against the assumption that the necroalchemist will die for his crimes. "Of course," she answers gruffly, stepping out of the way. "You are not our prisoner."

Esme moves quickly down the hallway, moving with grace across the beams. When she enters the laboratory, she sees Stirgen, guarding Svillenius. Svillenius looks up at her - his face a mixture of fear and anger. "I'm sorry - they were too many. I had to surrender. But where were you!? Why didn't you come? Please Esme…Please…"

She kneels before him, putting her finger to his lips to silence him. She looks at Stirgen, "May I embrace my husband before I leave him?"

Svillenius starts, "Leave me?! But…"

Kenji:

You see Esme stealthily withdraw a slender, silver dagger from her clothing. Unfortunately, you are too far away to do anything, as only a moment later, the blade is slicing across Svillenius' throat, the blood spurting out onto the floor and directly into Esme's face and onto her clothes. The blade is returned to her clothing as quickly as it was withdrawn.

Svillenius' words are cut short again as his throat opens and blood spews forth. He looks with terror at Esme for only a moment before he closes his eyes and falls on his side as if asleep.

Esme stands and looks down at the body. "Goodbye, my love. May we meet again." She then turns to the group, her clothing covered in the blood of her husband. "Shall we go?"

Male Human (Ulfen) Occultist

I'm assuming you rolled a Perception check or something like that for Stirgen offscreen? As if he knew that was happening he would have taken steps to stop it...

I did. Kenji was the only one with a high enough score to spot it.

Male Human Admixture Wizard1/Crossblooded Tatooed Sorcerer

Kenji is horrified as the undead woman murders here husband.
No. Wait
Seeing the abomination so casually take a life is too much. From across the planks his response is quick and descisive.
He casts GREASE on the squares she is standing in.
[ooc]DC 15 Reflex to avoid falling. She is flatfooted and can only move 1/2 speed.

Female Half-Orc Battle Oracle 2

"Nee! Wat het jy gedoen?!?" Lilley gasps in horror, her hand going automatically to her sword and pulling it halfway from its sheath as she stares at Esme in disbelief.

Orc:
"No! What have you done?!?"

Male Human (Ulfen) Occultist

The look on Stirgen's face turns to pure shock and horror as the scene plays out. The sight of blood and death makes him bring his axe to bear against the newcomer, raising it threateningly. He looks pleadingly towards Lilley and the others, face filled with confusion at whether he should strike down the strange woman or not.

Reflex Save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

Esme stumbles and falls in the grease from Kenji's hand. Her face goes red - she is clearly angered by this.

When Lilley speaks, she replies in perfect Orcish, "Ek het gedoen wat hy wou hê ek moet doen. Die Pharasmans sou getoon het minder genade as dit! Wie dink jy is! Jy by die huis ingebars in ons huis! Jy het probeer om sy werk te beëindig. Jy het hom gedood. Nie ek nie. En buitendien," she draws back the high collar she is wearing to reveal a gaping slice in her neck as if from a knife blade, "Hy doen dieselfde vir my. Ek het net sy guns terugbetaal."

Orc:

"I did what he wanted me to do. The Pharasmans would have shown less mercy than that! Who do you think you are! YOU barged into our home! YOU tried to end his work. YOU killed him. Not me. And besides," she draws back the high collar she is wearing to reveal a gaping slice in her neck as if from a knife blade, "He's done the same for me. I simply repaid his kindness."

Female Half-Orc Battle Oracle 2

Assuming Bastarger nor Rajah make a move to attack or something in the "reaction round"....

Lilley is pale and shaken at what she has just witnessed, but she deliberately slides her blade back into its scabbard, although she doesn't move her hand far from the hilt. "Jy vertel ons...." She seems to realize something is not quite right and takes a long, shuddering breath, glancing around at the rest of the party. "You tell us," she repeats, "what is going on here. Are you dead or alive, and by whose hand? And what was the work that compelled him to rob the Lady of Graves?"

Bastarger looked somewhat horrified at the turn of events and truthfully, hadn't really been sure what to do- until now. He moved over to the fallen man and began to tie up Esme with the rope instead.

I think i'd be more comfortable with her tied up now... he said, face ashen.

Male Human Admixture Wizard1/Crossblooded Tatooed Sorcerer

Now she is undead AND a murderer. There can be no doubt the Pharamans WILL destroy her. For what she is and what shehas done

Male Human (Ulfen) Occultist

"She... she said that she let her husband kill her..." Stirgen stammers to start with before his brow juts forward and his face stiffens. Addressing the prone Esme he states "You killed an unarmed man... you will allow us to search you and restrain you... until we figure out what to do with you..." jutting his lower jaw forward and widening his eyes searching for her assent.

"I am undead and I am alive. My husband tried to save me from my disease, but he was unable. However, he did heal me from my mortality. He was trying to find a way to extend life via alchemical means - not necromancy. He succeeded. Obviously."

Esme refuses to be tied up.

Spoiler:

1d20 + 9 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 9 + 10 = 28
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

It is a DC28 CMB maneuver to grapple Esme.

She remains on the ground, but looks as if she is ready to stand up.

She manages to regain her calm. "You will not search me. You will not tie me up. I am not your prisoner. I did as my husband wanted. You are the murderers. You will let me go. I will never return here. I will go to Ankar Te or leave Kaer Maga altogether." Her tone changes. It's pleading. "Please. Let me go. I have suffered two lifetimes worth of agony. Allow me to rebuild my life."

Male Human Admixture Wizard1/Crossblooded Tatooed Sorcerer

WE did not slit your husbands throat. You will allow yourself to be bound and escorted to the surface. We have just seen you calmly slit a mans throat and for the sake of our safety I consider you a threat unless bound. You have a choice. Either accept our word we won't harmyou and we accept your surrender as we did your husbands or you try to leave here forcefully and we do what we must.

Male Gnome Fighter (Mobile), HP23/23, AC 20 (24), FF 18 (22), Touch 13, CMD 16, F +4, R +1, W +0, Init +3, Perception +3, AOO +6 (+4)

You won't co-operate and you slew an unarmed man. This is no longer an acceptable situation. Bastarger said grimly as he released one hand from his Elven curved blade, drew a net and hurled it towards the undead.

Considering how much she got in her surprise round I hope this will also count as one.

Init- 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Will wait and see how GM is resolving this.
