Eben MacTeague |
Well, technically I moved before Rodrigo, and I could only have affected one of them even if I'd waited. 'Delay until the summoner goes' might be a good plan for me & my buffs in the future, though.

Round 1: Actions
Standard Action: Throw Dispelling bomb at drow alchemist Elsaroth
Reflex Save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Carina barely feels her centre of gravity shift when the drow's bomb goes off.
"Neat trick. Have one of mine." She yanks a vial of clear fluid from her belt, shakes it and throws it, aiming for the drow bomb-lobber!

Dungeon Kobold |
Rodrigo makes a gesture to summon some assistance to their aid. A moment later, three small portals to the heavenly planes open in midair above Farrukh, Eben and Tanith. Three celestial creatures that somewhat resemble flying lanterns swoop out of the portals and begin peppering the drow with laser fire.
_________________________Standard action; summon monster IV
They appear in the spaces above Tanith, Farrukh and Eben if there is room.
Likely 17 damage, bypasses any DR he might have.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Gestalt (Su)Nine lantern archons can fuse together as a full-round action, becoming a single Large entity that is more powerful than the individual archons that make up its parts. Looking like a whirlwind of dancing firefly lights, the gestalt has all the powers and abilities of a Large air elemental plus the following: archon, good, and lawful subtypes; archon traits (aura of menace DC 16); 2 light rays (2d6); DR 5/evil and magic. The archons can remain in this form for 2d4 rounds. When the gestalt separates back into individual lantern archons, its remaining hit points are divided evenly among them; if it had less than 9 hit points, some of the component archons die when the gestalt ends.
Aura of Menace (Su)Any hostile creature within a 20-foot radius of an archon must succeed on a Will save (DC 13) to resist its effects. The save DC is Charisma-based, and includes a +2 racial bonus. Those who fail take a –2 penalty on attacks, AC, and saves for 24 hours or until they successfully hit the archon that generated the aura. A creature that has resisted or broken the effect cannot be affected again by the same archon's aura for 24 hours.
Light Ray (Ex)A lantern archon can fire beams of light to damage foes. These light rays have a maximum range of 30 feet. This attack overcomes damage reduction of any type.
As a sidenote, thanks for putting the archons' stats here. Really helps.
Vs. Aura of Menace (closest archons first): 3d20 ⇒ (15, 14, 1) = 303d20 ⇒ (14, 10, 7) = 313d20 ⇒ (20, 3, 16) = 39
Stricken by five burning bolts of holy energy, Elsaroth seems to lose his composure, just a hair. The fallen drow seems similarly disconcerted.
Since you didn't apply any Cover penalties, I'm assuming at least one of the archons is at a different elevation?
Carina is up!
Dungeon Kobold |
Round 1: Actions
Standard Action: Throw Dispelling bomb at drow alchemist Elsinoth[Reflex Save]1d20+9
Carina barely feels her centre of gravity shift when the drow's bomb goes off.
"Neat trick. Have one of mine." She yanks a vial of clear fluid from her belt, shakes it and throws it, aiming for the drow bomb-lobber!
Ranged Touch Attack (2 Range Increments, Action Point!): 1d3 + 8 - 4 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 8 - 4 + (2) = 7
[Dispel Check]1d20+6
Carina's bomb hits the other alchemist right in the chest. He seems to reel for a moment as the magics take hold and dissipate something within him. He staggers.
1d20 ⇒ 7Farrukh is up!
Farrukh Al'Khatel |
Going to jump partway so I only eat 15 feet of movement instead of 20. I can hit the DC 20 for 5 feet up (Which is b#+$&@@%, I should be able to jump 10 feet high at 7th level =() on all but a 1.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (4) + 18 = 22
Climb: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
Farrukh jumps, magically assisted, to an unimpressive height, and fails to grab hold of the wall!
Not to be discouraged, he tries to climb again!
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
This time, he clings and ascends, studying one of the crossbow wielding Drow intently.
Dungeon Kobold |
Round 2: Elsaroth
Elsaroth staggers, his eyes seeming to glow for a moment as some sort of enchantment leaves him.
He reaches to his belt, whips out a bomb, and flings it at Carina. The bomb seems to trail sparking liquid as it flies, soaring past the windy defenses and exploding right in front of Carina's face.
Bomb (partial cover; range; touch: 1d20 + 9 - 6 ⇒ (20) + 9 - 6 = 23
Crit?: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 1 30% chance, low is bad for PCs.
Damage: 5d6 + 8 ⇒ (5, 2, 5, 6, 3) + 8 = 29
DC 17 Reflex saves from Farrukh, Tanith and Astraden to halve 13 splash damage.
"Nice try, fish girl." Elsaroth says something else in Undercommon to his compatriots, and they nod.
Round 2: Bolt Aces
The male crossbow wielder gets to his feet, and he and the female drow both draw out squishy-looking sacs with lightning speed. The female flings hers at Farrukh's head, then gets out her scimitar.
1d20+10-2=11 I think that barely hits, since you're still climbing and therefore denied your Dex bonus. Let me know if that's mistaken.
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 13
Make a DC 15 Reflex save or be entangled.
He draws a squishy-looking bag as the female draws a scimitar and strikes at Farrukh. As he rises onto the ledge, Farrukh raises his klar and deflects the blow.
Scimitar: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
The male drow flings his bag at 1d3 ⇒ 3 Carina.
Touch Attack (range; cover; aura): 1d20 + 10 - 8 ⇒ (8) + 10 - 8 = 10
Carina easily dodges his throw, however. Cursing in a black tongue, he, too, draws his scimitar.
Round 2: You are up!
Dungeon Kobold |
Ah, I was going by your position on the map. Hint, hint. :P
In that case, modifying her action slightly.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Reflex: 1d20 + 11 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 11 + 2 = 31
Tanith grunts in pain both from his share of the blast and the pain he felt through his bond with Carina. ”I don’t think it’s working Red!” he growls.
The big Kordite drifts through the air on Astraden’s unseen wings and slugs the dark elf bomber with a ham-sized fist. He pulls his punch just enough to leave a bruise instead of broken bones.
Punch (heroism, high ground): 1d20 + 12 - 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 12 - 2 + 2 + 1 = 25
Non-lethal Damage (smite, hope): 1d8 + 7 + 4 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 4 + 3 + 2 = 17
Dungeon Kobold |
That's gonna provoke an AoO from the drow woman (I know the map is kinda unclear—the designers really love their angles). Still want to go for it?
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Tanith can't fly in from Eben's square to avoid the AoO?
Dungeon Kobold |
Actually, on review, that movement looks valid.
Tanith ascends and pummels the drow alchemist. Elsaroth gives a gasp of pain as the wind is knocked out of him.
Astraden Limhaare |
Astraden clumsily tries to dodge the worst of the fiery explosion.
Reflex (good hope): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Singed, her twin forms whip out Marzena's lean, sharp-bladed dagger. She spins it up at the crossbowwoman, letting Eben's spell guide her hand.
+1 dagger (1 range increment, good hope): 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 7 - 2 + 2 = 9 Slashing, magic (good hope): 1d4 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 2 = 10 Not accounting for cover.
Round 2: Movement (move action), draw dagger as part of movement (free action), and throw at the drow closest to me. Ebon eyes lasts 649 rounds, ebon eyes lasts 650 rounds, magic circle against law lasts 69 rounds, air walk lasts 699 rounds, and copycat lasts 5 rounds.
Farrukh Al'Khatel |
Farrukh growls at the Drow with the scimitar and attacks her with everything he's got after stepping to the side.

Bash Iterative: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (2) + 14 = 16

32 to Bull Rush her off the ledge so Eben and Astraden can poke her to death. So the last attack goes to the other Drow. Please tell me I beat her CMD by 5 so she slams into the opposite wall before falling.
Carina Viera |
Round 2: Actions
Move Action: Move 20 feet forward
Standard Action: Throw Fire Bomb at drow bomber
The bomb singes Carina badly, but thanks to Tanith's magic, she shakes it off quickly.
She storms forward, twirling another bomb in her fingers.
"Fine. Plan B, then." She growls and throws it!
Ranged Touch Attack (PBS, 1 Range Increment): 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 8 + 1 - 2 = 16
Damage (PBS): 3d6 + 4 ⇒ (5, 2, 3) + 4 = 14
"Catch that, Knife-Ears."
Eben MacTeague |
3 people marked this as a favorite. |
Eben reprimands Carina over his shoulder, "Hey! These may be our enemies, we may have to kill them, but we do not have to resort to using racial slurs!"
Holding off on my action until I find out whether or not Farrukh just tossed a living drow at my feet.
Dungeon Kobold |
Farrukh growls at the Drow with the scimitar and attacks her with everything he's got after stepping to the side.
32 to Bull Rush her off the ledge so Eben and Astraden can poke her to death. So the last attack goes to the other Drow. Please tell me I beat her CMD by 5 so she slams into the opposite wall before falling.
Astraden's knife flies by harmlessly, catching the drow's attention for a brief moment . She looks back in time to get slammed by Farrukh's klar, knocked all the way off the cliff, over Eben's head, and into the opposite wall. She falls to the ground next to Eben and Astraden, momentarily stunned.
Falling Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Carina's dagger comes close to hitting its aura-afflicted target, but all the people and creatures in the way (including those presently flying off the ledge) cause her to overshoot.
Farrukh's slice has more effect, though, slashing into Elsaroth's robed stomach. The alchemist manages to keep from being knocked off, but he looks alarmed regardless.
Rodrigo and Eben are up. I can see Jelani's moving now on the map.
Rodrigo Dantares |
Rodrigo steps up to the cavern wall, and flattens himself against it once explosions start flying about. He lets the archons do their work from his position of relative safety.
The summoned outsiders move slightly farther down the tunnel and then continue blasting the drow alchemist with beams of light.
No idea what the map means as far as cover goes, apply it if you will.
We all 5' step.
Archon attacks: 6d20 ⇒ (19, 11, 18, 2, 2, 16) = 68 23, 15, 22, 6, 6, 20
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 31d6 ⇒ 11d6 ⇒ 41d6 ⇒ 21d6 ⇒ 61d6 ⇒ 5
Dungeon Kobold |
You really should label your bombs more clearly. What if you needed to cut a sandwich and I ruled you'd just blown your head off? You'd be out a lunch, that's what.
Reflex: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 8 - 2 = 18
The bolt ace dodges the majority of Carina's bomb, but Elsaroth, slowed by the archons' aura, is just barely hit. He crumples.
Does Rodrigo have the archons switch targets, and who to?
Astraden Limhaare |
Wouldn't Farrukh's movement provoke an AOO from the scimitar lady?
Dungeon Kobold |
Oh, right. I was going to roll that, but I think I got so convinced she wouldn't be able to hit Mr. 27 AC, I forgot I hadn't actually checked yet.
Not A Twenty Means Miss: 1d20 ⇒ 6
The drow swings her scimitar at Farrukh as he passes by, of course to no avail.
Eben MacTeague |
Eben takes a step back as a lady drow comes raining down from above. "For me? Aw, Farrukh, you always give the best gifts!" His hands full with impractical gear, he drops his bow and the glass rod and draws his sword instead. "Maybe I should have taken that magic longsword instead of the rod..." he muses briefly before whispering his attack charm and bringing the sword down on the prone drow.
longsword+good hope+prone target: 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 7 + 2 + 4 = 28
longsword+good hope+arcane strike: 1d8 + 1 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 1 + 2 + 2 = 13
He follows his attack up with some more nimble footwork.

Dungeon Kobold |
Eben slashes into the drow while she's on the ground, badly injuring her.
Dungeon Kobold |
The archons fire on the drow on the ground. Two bolts find their mark and the drow gives a hoarse scream, her eyes flickering with golden flames, then slowly turning dark as she blacks out.
Round 3: Drow
The last drow standing steps over Elsaroth's body and swings his scimitar at Tanith, giving a shout in Undercommon.
Scimitar: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Crit?: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Round 3: You are up!
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Tanith ignores the cut from the drow's tiny blade and drifts down close enough to unload a brutal head/body combination on him.
Flurry (heroism, high ground): 1d20 + 12 - 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 12 - 2 + 2 + 1 = 28

Non-lethal Damage (hope): 1d8 + 7 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 7 + 4 + 2 = 20

Tanith retrieves the healing wand and starts mending wounds.
"Heal up and get ready. If they didn't know we're here before they're going to know real soon."
Astraden do you mind dropping a channel? Quite a few of us are hurt. I'll roll some wand charges from whatever's left.

It looked like that square was just a 5 ft. step away, considering the only square I could have been in while still being up there was the one nearest the edge towards the bottom.
Also, an adamantine dagger, sweet!
@Tanith: I could use one more whack.
Dungeon Kobold |
Like I said in a later deleted post, these maps are hard to read sometimes (and sometimes they have to be stretched to accommodate larger encounters and larger parties). I'd placed you in a square I judged sufficient, but I can see why there'd be confusion. I'll try to make such matters more intuitive in the future.
Tanith is taking extra damage whenever Carina gets hit, remember—that bomb crit did a pretty large amount to him.
Eben MacTeague |
Someone wanna wave a quick detect magic over that?
Eben quickly sheathes his sword and regathers his things. "Well, that was quicker than I'd thought. Good to know that not being able to de-dominate them won't make things too hard, at least. So, if I'm remembering right, the next room has a naga that might be bribeable. Do we want to bother trying to bribe her?"
5 rounds of healing, plus one to move south for Astraden's channel, plus let's assume another one just because, so... Heroism lasts 688 and 689 rounds, dancing lights lasts 0 rounds, cat's grace lasts 61 rounds, good hope lasts 62 rounds.
At some point during the healing fest, Eben's dancing lights wink out. He recasts it.
Dancing lights lasts 10 rounds.
