HP 23/23 | Armor 1 | Damage 1d8 - Half-Elf Ranger 2 (0/9 XP)

Interested in playing.

Not quite yet. :-) I have some questions for you first....

1) You have a very exotic name. How did your parents decide on it? Or did you name yourself?

2) How did you learn your wilderness survival skills? Did you have a teacher, or are you self-taught? Is there a Ranger Guild?

3) A scimitar is traditionally a weapon of the middle east. Are you from a desert region? Where do you live now? Are you a nomad, or do you stay in a particular area?

4) Tell me about your hawk. Does it have a name? How did you make it your companion? Did you have to train it, or do you have some kind of mystic bond with it?

I may have more questions later, but let's start there. :-)

Grand Lodge

HP 23/23 | Armor 1 | Damage 1d8 - Half-Elf Ranger 2 (0/9 XP)

1) You have a very exotic name. How did your parents decide on it? Or did you name yourself?

My mother gave it to me after my father left. Rhovanor is elven for wilder land. Mom said it reminds her of my father. Shadespyre is my mother’s last name. I don’t know much about my father except that mom loves him very much.

2) How did you learn your wilderness survival skills? Did you have a teacher, or are you self-taught? Is there a Ranger Guild?

My wilderness survival skills where learn at the heals of my Uncle Tithaefarason Shadespyre. Mom had to work a lot to support us and so I had a lot of free time. Uncle Tith would watch me and take me out with him out into the wilderness. By my early teen years Uncle Tith would drop me off in a location and come back in 48 hours. He would expect me to have a base camp set up and ready to stay there a while. Every once in a while he would leave me there for a whole week. By late teens I was assisting Uncle Tith with basic jobs. I learned everything I know about the wilderness, tracking, survival, fighting, sword dancing, and other skills. There is a Ranger Guild but I have never been part of it, not a fan of organizations.

3) A scimitar is traditionally a weapon of the middle east. Are you from a desert region? Where do you live now? Are you a nomad, or do you stay in a particular area?

A scimitar was a gift from my Uncle Tith, my mentor when he felt I had learned to hand them. Uncle Tith would let me use his scimitar to practice my sword dance. I don’t know where he picked up the skill. I like the way the scimitar feel in my hand. I grew up in forest most of my life but have traveled across mountains, desert, seas, and other regions. I live on the road right now, with no home besides the current mission. I do visit my mother every once in a while. She lives in a small town between two mountains off in the east.

4) Tell me about your hawk. Does it have a name? How did you make it your companion? Did you have to train it, or do you have some kind of mystic bond with it?

I have a red tail hawk named Evrantilen meaning oath-sworn. She is a constant reminder of the oath I have made to my self. During the late teen years on a mission with Uncle Tith, one of the party members killed Evrantilen’s mother and I raised her. Since she has grown up her entire life with me, Evrantilen and I are really close. The training she received was mostly on trail and when I needed help. She seems to know what I need before I even give the command. The only issue is she has a mind of her own when it comes to protecting me. She has the habit of not following orders when she feels it would put me in danger.

More questions for you. :-)

1) What's the name of the town where your mother lives? Tell me about it.

2) How long has your father been gone?

3) Tell me more about Uncle Tith. What race is he? Where does he live? What kind of personality does he have? Does he give you your missions, or does someone else? Do you associate with him outside of work?

4) Do you know anything about the Ranger Guild? What has caused you to dislike organizations?

5) You're currently on a mission. What is it?

Grand Lodge

HP 23/23 | Armor 1 | Damage 1d8 - Half-Elf Ranger 2 (0/9 XP)

1) What's the name of the town where your mother lives? Tell me about it.

It is a small sleepy town called Benden Hold and known for it wild grape wines. Named after the founder Benden. The town is a made mostly of social misfits. Mom moved there just before I was born. The town is a mix of different races but I was known as the bastard child with no father. I never really mixed will any of the social groups of Benden Hold. The only call to fame is the Benden Hold wine and is prized by kings and men alike. Another thing that about most of the residents are people what want to fade into the shadows or 20 generation families.

2) How long has your father been gone?

I am 26 years old and my father has been gone just short of 27 years. I don’t know anything about him.

3) Tell me more about Uncle Tith. What race is he? Where does he live? What kind of personality does he have? Does he give you your missions, or does someone else? Do you associate with him outside of work?

Uncle Tith is an half-elf with a elf father and human mother. Last I heard he was in the Blue Mountains down south leading a bodyguard duty for some up and coming prince. Uncle is a very solitary person who gives advice very rarely, so you listen when he talks. I have never seen him to be wrong. My missions originally came from my Uncle but over time I created my own network that pass on possible missions. I also find missions by just traveling and stumbling on to them. We associate outside of work but mostly it is survival or cross country trips with each of us just enjoying each others company.

4) Do you know anything about the Ranger Guild? What has caused you to dislike organizations?

The Ranger Guild is mostly a connection of rangers who share info and missions. I believe the office for Ranger Guild is located in Hope City out west. I found that like my Uncle I am a solitary man and most of the guild to be want to bees. I am sure that there are some good people in the guild but none that I have meet so far. I also don’t like bonds thus I belong to no group, live in no specific location, and only have four special relationships.

5) You're currently on a mission. What is it?

My current mission was to clean out a trail between Goldhead town and Swanny Lake town, of little creatures (you can pick something realistic) with nasty teeth. I am heading to Goldhead town to let Mr. Taylor Jones that the mission is complete and to collect my pay.

Last set of questions. :-)

1) You have four special relationships. I'm assuming Mom, Uncle Tith, Evrantilen, and who?

2) How long did it take you to clear out the Goblins? Was it difficult? How did Evrantilen help you?

Grand Lodge

HP 23/23 | Armor 1 | Damage 1d8 - Half-Elf Ranger 2 (0/9 XP)

1) You have four special relationships. I'm assuming Mom, Uncle Tith, Evrantilen, and who?

Amy, a human healer that has been part of several missions with me, is the fourth person. She lives in Hope City. Amy is a cleric with good for her aligment. She worships Phoebus. She has chainmail, staff, and healing potions. She also has the gift of sanctuary. She is the only person out side of my family that has every really treated me as a normal person and the only one I enjoy talking to.

2) How long did it take you to clear out the Goblins? Was it difficult? How did Evrantilen help you?

It took a little while longer then usual since I was working alone. It was not very difficult, I would create a noise on the road to draw out the Goblins and hid in the woods. When they came out, I would attack the ones in the back first with my scimitar then pick off the ones in the road with my bow and arrows. Evrantilen would sometimes act as a look out, scout the locations for Goblins, and brought me food.

Underneath the text box where you write your posts, you'll see a small spoiler labeled "How to Format Your Text." It shows how to roll dice and do the various text formats listed here. Make a test post here to make sure they work for you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
This means regular writing, descriptions, or anything else your character does.

"This means your character is saying something."

"this means your character is thinking something but doesn't say it out loud"

This is an out-of-character comment that will have no effect on the game. Use this text for rules questions, Monty Python quotes, etc.

Click Me:
The stuff in here is secret. The title will usually tell you what you need to do to read it. Don't click it unless you do what it says first.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
In a little bit, I'll put all the Basic Moves under the "Campaign Info" tab. They explain how to shoot your bow, slice with your scimitar, avoid being stabbed in the face, and anything else you may need to do during the campaign.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Later today, I'll start the campaign. You'll know it's ready when you see the "Gameplay" tab. Once that's up, use this area for out-of-character stuff. If you have a rules question, for example. Whenever you post in the "Gameplay" tab, make sure you use the text formatting listed above. Everything that happens in that tab becomes part of the campaign (unless you use the blue text).

LOL yes they are :) Man ... it has been a wile since i worked in HTML. :)

:-)

By the way, unless you're rolling damage, everything in Dungeon World is resolved by rolling 2d6+something. Keeps things simple. For the first little bit, I'll give you hints as to when to roll something. Another rule: the GM never touches the dice. If a monster hits you, YOUR dice determine how badly you're hurt. *evilgrin*

Grand Lodge

HP 23/23 | Armor 1 | Damage 1d8 - Half-Elf Ranger 2 (0/9 XP)

is that the same in pathfinder?

Not even close. You'll usually roll a d20, but d8 and d100 are also very common. That's not counting your damage dice and a few other situational rolls. Also, the GM rolls dice just as much as you do. It's quite complicated and gets very overwhelming at first. Pathfinder's generally something you want to learn in a live game as opposed to a play-by-post.

by the way i love your evil grin ;)

There's a map at the top of the page. The places where Evrantilien noticed something are marked with white letters.

By the way, if you're still a bit confused about posting format and whatnot, click on my name and go to the "Campaigns" tab. It'll show you a list of the games I'm running, and you can always read through them. They all use Pathfinder rules, but the format's the same. I'd recommend one of the "Forgotten God" campaigns for solo examples, or "Reign of Winter" for a fun read. :-)

I've done some thinking, and I'm fine with you starting as a Half-Elf if you want. However, you won't gain any additional benefit unless you take the "Half-Elf" move upon leveling up. Sound fair? :-)

Sounds more then fair :)

Always wait for me to reply before you make a new post. A failed roll doesn't always mean what you think it does. Also, I'm not sure what you're trying to do in your second post. What's the DEX roll for? Dungeon World requires specificity. :-)

When you Volley and get a 7 or higher, you hit your target and deal damage (1d8 in your case). However, if you get a 7-9, there's a problem, and you choose one of the three options.

1) You make yourself vulnerable somehow (I decide how)
2) You deal less damage (instead of normal, roll 1d8 and subtract 1d6)
3) It takes you several shots to hit the target (subtract 1 ammo)

You get to choose which option applies.

By the way, on the Right side of your post are several options. One is "Edit." That way you don't have to post multiple times. Also, you can Preview your post before submitting it so you know what your roll was.

I need to know a few more things, too. First, are you using Volley or Called Shot? Where are you aiming? Is your hawk helping you? If so, how? If you're using Volley, which negative option are you choosing?

For the future, an example combat post should look like:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Rhovanor takes careful aim at the sleeping girallon. It's hide is almost certainly too thick for his arrow to penetrate, but perhaps its eyes are more vulnerable.

Volley: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (5, 6) + 1 = 12 (Pretend this is a 9)

The target is small, and it takes several shots before one connects. When he finally hits his target, Evrantilien flies over and pushes the arrow in deeper.

Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 (class damage + ferocity)

Reducing ammo by 1

Grand Lodge

HP 23/23 | Armor 1 | Damage 1d8 - Half-Elf Ranger 2 (0/9 XP)

Ok sorry :) I acually want to do a called shot "When you attack a defenseless or surprised enemy at range, you can choose to deal your damage or name your target and roll+DEX. " using my volly attack. I am doing a head shot with the help of my hawk.

So like this?

Rhovanor cocks the arrow and aims down the shaft to head of the sleeping girallon. Evrantilien who was flying over head sees the arrow being cocked and fly down to assist. Rhovanor lets the arrow fly and Evrantilien follows it to the target.

Called Shot: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 3) + 2 = 9

The shot hits the head of the sleeping girallon but the girallon does nothing but lay there and drool for a few moments. Evrantilien pushes the arrow in just a little bit more before flying back to Rhovanor since the girallon is still asleep.

Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

You're almost right but are also doing my job for me. :-( Remember that you only get to control Rhovanor. I decide what happens with the rest of the world. Also, when you roll a 7-9 on a Called Shot, you choose either the effect (stand/lie there and drool) or damage. You don't get both - that's the complication. Which do you want?

Here's what your post should look like:

Rhovanor cocks the arrow and aims down the shaft to head of the sleeping girallon. Evrantilien, who was flying overhead, sees the arrow being cocked and flies down to assist. Rhovanor lets the arrow fly, and Evrantilien follows it to the target.

Called Shot: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 3) + 2 = 9

If you choose to deal damage, you'd make that roll as well. However, you don't get to decide what happens when the arrow hits - that's my job. :-)

Grand Lodge

HP 23/23 | Armor 1 | Damage 1d8 - Half-Elf Ranger 2 (0/9 XP)

ok :) should i use the same roll i have or reroll?

Use the same roll.

Grand Lodge

HP 23/23 | Armor 1 | Damage 1d8 - Half-Elf Ranger 2 (0/9 XP)

Pathfinder god Gozreh.

In that case, you may find THIS helpful. :-)

Do me a favor: remove "Male" from your profile and replace it with "HP 23/23 | Armor 1 | Damage 1d8" You'll probably have to do some finagling with the "Half-Elf Ranger 1 (1/8 XP)" bit to make everything look good, but it'll help both of us keep things straight.

By the way, in Dungeon World, armor reduces the amount of damage you take. In your case, subtract 1 whenever you take damage. The only exception is if I tell you that something "ignores armor." On a related note, if I ever tell you that something has the "piercing" quality, that means it ignores a certain amount of armor. For example, a BALLISTA would be "piercing 4" due to its massive arrows.

HP 23/23 | Armor 1 | Damage 1d8 - Half-Elf Ranger 2 (0/9 XP)

Moved my ex up one since I had that failed attack.. correct??

Correct. Also, in the future, Discern Realities involves more than just a quick look around. It's essentially searching an area by poking-and-prodding everything. :-)

In simple terms, Hack&Slash is used whenever you're making a melee attack. That can be a scimitar slash, punch, elaborate Kung-Fu move, spear thrust, nunchaku flurry, grab-and-throw, shield bash, etc.

Volley is used whenever you're making a ranged attack. That can be a throwing knife, bow-and-arrow, catapult, blowgun, boomerang, etc.

Even simpler example: Volley Picture
Hack & Slash Picture

Here's how that fight would have looked like under Pathfinder rules. :-)
-------------------------------------------------------
Sneak into Mess Hall
Stealth: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Girallon Perception: 1d20 + 11 - 10 ⇒ (13) + 11 - 10 = 14

It smells something and wakes up! Fortunately, it hasn't seen you yet
Your Sling Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16 (miss)

It knows where you are now!
Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Girallon Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

It goes first and charges you
Girallon Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15 (miss)

You draw your sword and swing at it once
Scimitar Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13 (miss)

It unleashes its fury upon you
Girallon Full-Attack: 5d20 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 ⇒ (11, 13, 6, 20, 11) + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 111 (four hits)
Critical Confirmation: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
Damage: 5d6 + 20 ⇒ (3, 1, 6, 5, 3) + 20 = 38

You die, horribly

There are five ways to recover HP in Dungeon World.
1) Have someone cast a healing spell on you
2) Make Camp for a few hours - you'll recover half of your HP
3) Bandages - take a few minutes to patch yourself up and heal 4 HP
4) Herbs & Poultices - take a few minutes to apply and heal 7 HP
5) Healing Potion - drink one to instantly heal 10 HP

Keep in mind that you're in a village (don't forget to check the building list I gave you earlier).

Grand Lodge

HP 23/23 | Armor 1 | Damage 1d8 - Half-Elf Ranger 2 (0/9 XP)

am i still stunned?

Take a few minutes to clear your head, and it'll go away.

You're no longer "Stunned," by the way. :-)

Also, this is a good place to explain looking around vs. Discern Realities.

Looking Around doesn't require any rolling and will reveal everything that's clearly seen. The general description an area is covered here. You've done this for the three buildings I just described. However, if there's anything hidden, you're not going to be told that information. Think of it as a house tour. The host will show you around, and you'll see pretty-much everything, but he's not going to show you his secret stash of cocaine that's hidden behind a fake wall in his closet. ;-)

Discern Realities involves actively searching something and always requires a roll. If you roll a 7+, you get to ask me things from a list of questions (listed in Campaign Info). That's what you use to find traps, secret doors, etc. The downsides are that it takes a bit of time, and you'll actually have to move stuff around. So if there's a trap and you fail your Discern Realities roll, you may set it off by mistake. On the upside, if you succeed (and ask the right questions), you'll find that secret drug cache in the closet. ;-)

Grand Lodge

HP 23/23 | Armor 1 | Damage 1d8 - Half-Elf Ranger 2 (0/9 XP)

How much does herbs weigh?

Three batches are 1 weight, so a single use doesn't weigh anything.

EDIT: As you can see, Defy Danger doesn't always involve losing HP. In this case, it you fail, you're probably going to smash something valuable. ;-)

Also, this is a good example for when rolls are needed. :-) In Dungeon World, rolling the dice happens when there's a consequence for failure. If you can simply try again without the situation changing, there's no need for a roll - like when you climbed the guard tower at the beginning of the adventure.

Called Shot only works against a defenseless or surprised enemy. Not against something like THIS.

I should also mention that the questions you're asking are exactly what Spout Lore is for. Just make sure you tell me how you'd know something like that. :-)
