Liberty's Edge

Also I'm looking at Brigand for the campaign trait.

He'll have done a job for a band of thieves since they pay better than the city, and had fallen in with them for a while. Due to one of the brigands turning him over in a "questioning", he's on the run from the law when the charters are being issued.

I don't know about others already in the game, but I'm mostly interested in seeing people's ideas on how the character will fit into an evil party, what god their character worships (if any), and how they'll fit into the group building a kingdom. (Also, what they'd like the kingdom to look like, if they have any ideas, even vague ones.)

"I think I had mentioned how I would fit into an evil party, but I'll reiterate for the sake of completeness.

I am a cruel man that enjoys hurting others. Killing others. It's a thrill. But I obey the laws. I do what is asked of me, I don't just snap and kill someone for looking at me funny after he had a dwarven ale too many. I learned that the most convenient way to live is to blend in. To be a functioning member of society.
That also includes playing nice with others. Yours would not be the first people I accompany in the wilderness. I can find my way around these woods, I can forage enough supplies for a small group if needed, I'm good with a bow, at reading tracks One of the reasons no archetype, some interesting ones would replace track, and at stalking prey.
I can escort people through this uncharted land and make sure they come back, or I can find people and make sure they don't.

As for my beliefs, my very nature lends itself to worship of Zon-Kuthon. Not that I have seen any temples around here in which I could indulge myself into his worshipping. But I heard of it, and read of him. Every man needs a god to watch over him at times, and I choose him, as he choose me. Why else would I feel such joy when inflicting pain on others? Oh, if I could, I would erect a huge temple to him, and start preaching myself, in my spare time.

I heard you people are out to build a kingdom. And thats great. I may have been a simple man of simple tastes all my life, but that does not mean I have no aspirations.
As you may have heard, I'm a bastard. ***hole that did my mother wrong died years ago, but his snotty little son now sits on a throne in his stead. By all means, If its possible to rub into his face that I'm nobility, I would want that. And there's a chance for that right in this charter.
I figure when building a kingdom, one also gets a say in some things. Like the Law. I like it strict, and I like it simple. No lenghty trials needed for that. People know whats coming for them when they break it, and there's little reason to discuss about it. No need for people to live in fear, there, I figure a harsh law provides them with safety, and no person not planning to break it need fear for their health.
Also, religion, I'd be big for religious freedom. Let everybody worship whoever they want. Keeps them masses satisfied, and allows me to order myself a big f***ing temple of Zon-Kuthon built.
Same thing with slavery. Why feed prisoners in a prison, when you can have them working in the mines? If someone can't pay his debts, what good will it do to incarcerate them? Why put bandits or soldiers to the sword when you can fetch a good price for them?
I've a great many ideas what I would build and do, because I had a great many days alone in these woods to myself, contemplating what's wrong with this nation we lived in.
I say rule just, but rule with harsh love for your subjects. Spoiling them just makes them laugh about you behind your back."
Those are, of course, just spontanous ideas about how to design a kingdom...naturally, this would be something to work towards together as a group, so while those would be his ideas, he's not insistent on them being realized.

I am waiting on a question I sent to the DM on deity. Originally, this character was a heretic of the elven god Ketephys (the god of the hunt). His heretical views (and heretic archtype) divorced the god from the CG alignment. I'd be happy to spread this heresy to everyone but if not allowed, might go for either the neutral god of nature, Gozreh or just worship a concept of 'the hunt' instead of a deity. The only evil hunter type god would be Camazotz that I know of, a CE bat god.

Fitting in, he is lawful evil, and would fit right in, especially since he doesn't seek to be the 'ruler'. He would be a good marshal or a good royal assassin/spymaster, able to follow orders without blanching at what that entails. He is dedicated to the hunt, and to perfecting his skill at the hunt, which is why he often hires out in the first place.

For the kingdom, Zaeos is the kind who would leave that up to better suited people (like yourself). He is intelligent, and tactically sound, so he would happily assist with wars, but enforcing the law of the land, whether through force (marshal) or murder (assassin) is what he would be about. What exactly the law is, is not really of consequence to him.

Hope that helps, feel free to ask any other questions. When I get word back from the Winds of Fate on deity I will post here again with the basically complete character sheet (altered from the gestalt version it has now). All the changes are made, but I have it on notepad for now.

I should add also, that one of his 'what he'd like the kingdom to look like' wishes would be the ability and power to freely practice his faith, and train some 'huntsmen' of his own, which is heretical and has had him persecuted and nearly put to death several times already.

Here's the character with the alterations, except for a few minor details like what sort of horse I have from being a stolen lands pioneer:

Appearance: Zaeos is typical for an elf, standing roughly 6 and a half feet high and thin as elves tend to be. His hair is fine, and his eyes are an emerald green. What makes Zaeos unusual is the demeanor by which he carries himself. Those green eyes twinkle with cold cruelty and judgement, the youthful face marred by a constant sneer, or sometimes a smirk. He excudes pride, but also confidence and experience. A simple cloak, hood drawn over his head, is the only notable clothing. His hand, bearing what looks to be a birthmark embellished into a life-like hawk, rests on the well-polished and large bow hung over his back.

Background: Zaeos is renowned for his relentless (and successful) pursuit of his prey. His drive to hunt for sport has soured his love of others and made him a cruel and cold man, but no one will dismiss the efficiency with which the hunter does his work. Once good, Zaeos is now decidedly evil, obsessed and consumed by his need to conquer another challenge in the hunt. Secretly, he desires to hunt his own kind, but has yet to sink to such a low. Perhaps there has simply not been an opportunity. Regardless, the hunter has taken to hiring himself out as both a tracker and a killer. His unnerving skill at stalking his quarry has already earned him some attention, and his pride causes him to continue unceasingly until the job is done and the prey is snared.

Being just past middle-aged, Zaeos has lived over 175 years already, and seen and done much in that time. Once, he was married to a beautiful woman. He sired two children later in his adulthood with her. His life was spent hunting, caring for his family, and working for the priests of Ketephys. Always he was bound to Ketephys through the symbol that branded the back of his hand: the hawk. However, a new love grew in Zaeos breast alongside his god of the hunt, and that was the hunt itself. Giving in to that desire to be victor of the slain prey, he became colder, more absent, and eventually without love.

His beliefs grew into a heresy so profound that Zaeos spent more and more time alone. His disgust for what he saw as his own kind's weakness of character became hatred. Eventually, as all things do, it came to light when he abandoned his children, his wife, and his homeland. He must seek more challenging prey elsewhere, he must perfect the draw of the bow, and he must be the best.

Zaeos, having been pursued from his elven homeland in Kyonin in the south, has emigrated and come to make a new home for the time being. He settled in the wilderness of the Stolen Lands decades ago, before many of the living humans in the area were even born. Recently, he has done several marvelous deeds that have made him stand out. One boy of 4 years old had been taken by cultists into the nearby wilds. Zaeos managed to lead a group to their location, and the boy was saved, by the skin of his teeth, from some dark occult ritual. Zaeos and his bow personally slew three of the cultists, supposedly with what could only be elven precision. He did this not out of any great love, but because of his dedication to the hunt. That time, the cultists were his prey, and the pay was good. There was also the case of a rare stag, which had been roaming and evading capture for years. Prized by a nobleman from the Medvyed family, Zaeos earned a part of his current funds by tracking and slaying the animal. Both of these things, much to Zaeos' pride, have already begun spreading rumors about the hunter. More fame will hopefully lead to a more impressive challenge. A kingdom charter, now that is a way to show everyone who is the best. His pride won't let him leave that challenge for another.

Potential roles in the kingdom, in order of preference and ability: Marshal, royal assassin, spymaster, or high priest.

Faith: Zaeos embodies and worships the concept of "The Hunt". After learning of both Ketephys and Irori, as well as Gozreh and Erastil, he came to understand the truth. The hunt was at the center, and all that really mattered. Those who stood in the way of the hunt must be put down. It is the path to godhood, to perfection. In this life, one was to perfect the hunt, in preparation to join the huntsmen in the next life. Glory, and station in the next life, depend upon your worth as a hunter of all things. (basic tenants being things like dedication, persistence, mastery in the tools of the hunt, and very similar to the Wild Hunt ancient lore from europe). The hunt precipitates many important events in the land, such as disasters, wars, or the rise and fall of kingdoms or gods. This mixture of gods and their essense has been labeled (wrongly) as a heresy, and endangered Zaeos' existence many times. Were he to have a say, were he to be a leader in this new kingdom, he would finally be free to practice his heresy in the open, and show the truth of the hunt to the world.

Forgot to mention how Zaeos will be heading in next few levels: Zaeos will have archery down nicely, along with multiclassing in zen archer for some more archery skill later on. Also of note for him is his spells are more ranger in choice, he can get up to a +14 to survival for an hour or two at level one and track at full speed, and will be taking stealth, survival, and perception each level. In a few levels he also gets to roll twice and take the best one for stealth, and do it at full speed due to his race, and gets some slayer bonuses as well as tracking. His secondary focus skill wise is on sense motive bluff and intimidate, but will be increasing physical skills also (acrobatics and climb mainly). Its important for a leader to be able to lie when needed and not be lied to. ;)

Off to bed but can PM me with questions or post in here and I will check in the AM. Good luck to everyone applying.

I wanted to get this application in asap, but I may tweak it a bit. I still need to flesh out the gear and may change a trait around.

I will be traveling from May 2 - May 11. I plan on still being able to post in my ongoing games, but I did want to make everyone involved in the selection process aware of this.

Thanks for the consideration!

Background:

Aiden rolled his sleeves up, looking the raftsman known as Stoat right in the eyes, staring the man down, willing the beating that Stoat was going to take upon the man before the fight had even started. Sure, Stoat had done the customary boast, one of little imagination, about how the man were the best boxer from Daggermark to Mivon. But now it were Aiden's turn.

Clearing his throat, still staring down the raftsman, Aiden raised his arms above his head, balling his hands into fists. Aiden paced, animal-like, around the circle, swinging his arms, lifting them, getting loose, the rake's attention still focused completely on Stoat. "Friends! Y'all know Stoat can win a fight, as long as he's given a Galtan's chance. But I don't need no such advantage. For, friends, I am the surest bare-knuckler in these mighty River Kingdoms! Hanspur hisself calms the water when I row his rivers, lest he catch my temper! All shall see I ain't no man easy to chew on. Come all, and see - I can out-row, out-jump, out-swim, out-drink, out-fight and out-kill any man from Scrawny Crossing to Sevenarches, from the Wilewood to Echo Wood, from the Stolen Lands to the Sodden Lands! Do not feel fer poor Stoat, and the beating he's about to receive, for he should know better than to fight an inhuman!"

Raising his arms above his head once again, Aiden looked away from Stoat for the first time, and raised his voice to the heavens. For I am no man born of this world! I am half horse!" His mind grasping for an exotic animal, Aiden yelled out the first one that he could think of, one from far off lands to the south, never seen anywhere near the River Kingdoms. "And I am half Alligator!"

The fight was over quickly, but more due to the whisky in Stoat than Aiden's fighting prowess. From that day on, Aiden gained the appellation Alligator-Horse.

-----------------

Aiden is a boatman and opportunist from the River Kingdoms that has made his way to the Stolen Lands because of rumors - rumors that there is opportunity to be had among the Brevic of the north, as the nation intends to send men to secure their chaotic southern border.

A fine marksman and woodsman, the Alligator-Horse plans to make a name for himself, and some gold, helping the Brevic with their bandit problem. Being an itinerant sort who has made a living among the River Kingdoms, as a boatman, guide, and sometimes smuggler and bandit, Aiden hopes his wilderness skills, watercraft expertise and rudimentary knowledge of the layout of the River Kingdoms will provide something for the Brevic to make use of. Though willing to be simple hired muscle for now, Aiden has larger dreams. He's not sure how, but the Alligator-Horse hopes to one day be not a robber, but rather a robber baron.

Personality and Quirks:

The Alligator-Horse, like many boatmen, loves a good tale, and especially a good boast. A competent orator, there is little Aiden would rather do than spend his time around a fire, with friends, whisky and stories.

Generally a garrulous sort, Aiden is often friendly with anyone that doesn't show him or herself as an enemy or threat. Real friends though, are far and few in the River Kingdoms. Such relationships are to be honored and cherished.

Possessing little formal education, Aiden is yet both bright and perceptive. Recently, he won in a card game a small library of books about engineering, natural science and geography, and has been reading and re-reading the works at every opportunity.

Ever the opportunist, this personality quirk even extends to the Alligator Horse's religion. Aiden will offer a prayer to any god that he thinks can help him in a specific situation. If traveling on a flatboat or barque, Aiden will offer a prayer to Hanspur for a safe journey. If hoping to find the secret of a rival, the prayer would go to Norgober. If he's about to get into a fight, Gorum, and so on.

Kingdom Roles and Kingdom Building:

Aiden is well suited for a few roles. With his wilderness skills, he could easily be the kingdom's marshal, running a force of wilderness scouts to keep the kingdom's borders secure, roads and waterways safe, and trade and travel flowing.

His flexible morality, as well as his skills and class abilities, would mean that Aiden could also be a sound Royal Assasin, removing threats to the kingdom from its shadows. Likewise, he could make a fine Spymaster.

Aiden's ambition, natural intelligence (if not rigorous education) and knowledge of travel and transport also would make him, perhaps surprisingly, a good treasurer, especially if that treasurer was focused on logistics and the increasing of trade and immigration (though much of this could also be folded into the realm of the marshal I suppose).

As for the type of Kingdom that Aiden would relish being a part of, he's very much modeled off of the merchant-flatboatmen (Half-horse, half-alligator was supposedly a real boast, and the alligator-horse became a symbol of rugged American frontierism). As such, I see him eventually becoming kind of a prototypical western self-made man, a proponent of free trade, unfettered commerce, and the usage of the Kingdom's natural resources as a means to prosperity. Of course, like any good capitalist, he also knows (or will know) that secure trade routes, enforced laws, and a well-designed infrastructure are important to the creation of wealth. As such, like real-life robber barons, he'll be something of a hypocrite, trying to get as much for himself within the confines of the law, and decrying any interference, while at the same time making sure that he's at the top of the pyramid and reaping the benefits of government subsidies.

I see Aiden in charge of a vast network of river and road travel, a network that includes private merchants, Texas Rangers, the pony express (or perhaps an undead pony express - there's a lot to be said for the walking dead as tools for the non-good kingdom), keelboats and flatboats, land grants and planned company towns. But that's later. For now, Aiden's just a low-born guy with a lot of ambition.

Liberty's Edge

Also keep in mind, if Soran is chosen, two things.

He is a pure archer. Melee combat will be avoided as much as possible. His starting load out would be exactly what's on his PFS sheet, plus the best composite longbow I could afford.

His skills are largely based on survival, tracking, perception, and UMD. In the wilderness, he's your man. In the city... Not so much. He's the type to let someone else shine there, and just stand in the background looking menacing.

I thought I would also throw in my original description of how a worshiper of why god of diseases would be interested in building a city.

I know it might not sound normal to have a worshiper of the god of plague and disease in a campaign where you are trying to build a city. But Kyra is more subtle about it than just putting plagues everywhere. There is a time and a place for them when the population of weak individuals is dragging down the success of the city or community as a whole. A strong parasite also requires a strong host, as a disease can’t spread far if there are no people to spread it. So most of the time all for city growth, and community and stuff, then once in a while a little bit of pestilence.

Plus, if need be we can pull out the old Warcraft 3 tactic, and send export some slightly diseased grain, so no other city.country notices until it is too late. Then we can strike upon our weakened enemies.

Liberty's Edge

Oh! As far as to why Soran would want to build his own kingdom:

Soran has spent a lot of time on both sides of the law; Hunting fugitives for the guard, hunting guards for bandits, etc, and has developed quite the dislike for a system that rewards and hides those who know it's inner workings, and is only a weapon against those who don't.

He believes a fresh start is needed, and a system that can't be abused by nobles and and intelligent law breakers put into place. Right now, he has no faith in law as it is.

This may very well lead to him becoming lawful neutral, should he succeed. That would in to roleplay, for sure.

In this aspect, I feel a need to add that I do not own a copy of Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Gods. I do own several hardcopies of other rule books, but regardless, tend to do most of my research and building based on the SRD.

The stuff I run in person, as GM, i prefer homebrew-settings. I may take inspiration from published things, but like to give it a do-over, keep my players on edge. That includes custom deities for these worlds.
So in regards to gods, I'm not very knowledgeable, I have to admit. I know some of the non-evil gods by heart from other character designs I made, but the evil ones, not so much.

My pick was based not so much on character concept, but more on a fast google search for deity's and looking what would make sense. Only the site I used mostly deals with the mechanics and core aspects in regards to the gods, with little to no fluff.
Just wanted to put that out there, because Darius worship is by no means set in stone, though from how I set him up, Zon-Kuthon did seem(and does seem) to be a good match.

Arasmes wants to reclaim the past. Growing up on tales of empire building does that to you. For his part, Norgorber is indifferent to the growth of civilization, being an ascended god, he knows the value of cities and the crush of humanity. His followers on the other hand tend to be thieves, assassins, and cults which all enjoy the deeply urban cores of civilization. Arasmes' ideal kingdom would thus be a highly urbanized bureaucracy of some flavor with a titular head that says one thing while doing another. The queen/empress/grandpoobah (Arasmes was raised matriarchal) would designate policy to her advisors/councilors/viziers, and they would carry out policy through a framework of individuals and the occasional direct act. Such a structure is made for secrets and corruption, of course. Arasmes has no need to -appear- evil. For Arasmes and Norgorber, the benefits of appearing -good- include allowing the newly formed kingdom the option to preempt witch and cult hunts, allowing actual evil to flourish while persecuting little known faiths. Similarly, prosecuting the small thieves and incorporating the large into the structure of government serves all parties. In Arasmes ideal kingdom, a Mysterium governs the Arcane, an Inquisition governs the Religious, and Neither is concerned with their stated goal of stamping out necromancy and dark cults, but rather with the firm and certain business of stamping out competitors to the Mysterium and Inqisition. Thus neither law nor chaos governs, merely a deep set faith that corruption properly tended and secrets kept, can see to itself.

Arasmes, just out of curiosity, how do you have 50 adamantine arrows and a +2 composite bow worth 3300gp at level one? Did you copy/paste an old character sheet? Or did I miss some campaign bonus to starting gold? Lol

probably a honest mistake in that he did not change things before posting here. At least I think so.

He did include the +2 damage in the arrows damage line, but has the correct attack bonus, so it seems it was not just a copy paste-error.

I suppose the character was made with Hero Lab for another game with a significant cash bonus to start with, and then just posted over.
can happen to anybody i guess, if choosen he'd probably clean it up, but aye, I understand you, imho it's important to have correct numbers so people can look at them and decide wether to choose you without having to consider if the numbers are off.
but a honest mistake can happen to anybody, happened to me as well when I failed to adapt a gestalt-char for single-class play properly.

I wasn't trying to besmirch him :)

I didn't know if he made a mistake, or if there was some crazy 'charter bonus' in kingmaker that I didn't know about. Either way I thought I'd point it out so he could fix it (or I could fix mine).

Aye, I didn't think you meant any ill by posting. I just felt compelled to answer because I also checked competition and was wondering about the +2 on arrow damage, but just kinda ignored it- wasn't the first time someone had a mistake in a concept crunch, won't be the last time.

But I'm pretty sure there's no crazy charter bonus in this campaign so I felt compelled to answer you :)

Well, thanks. I guess I will cross off your name on my list of potential hunting 'accidents.' :)

*spends a move action studying the elf* "You said something?"

Would indeed be interesting if all the applicants for this job were to just meet somewhere in the uncharted lands, then whoever gets to the Trading Post alive, first, gets the job.

And entertaining, lol. Pretty sure I would get there first though.

Zaeos The Hunter wrote:

Haha, that would depend on your real numbers.

This is point buy 25, and you have

STR 12
DEX 16-2(Adjustment Elves to get base)=14
CON 10+2(Adjustment Elves to get base)=12
INT 16-2(Adjustment Elves to get base)=14
WIS 18
CHA 8

which adds up to +2(Str), +5(Dex), +2(Con), +5(Int), +17(Wis), -2(Cha), or total of 29 points spent, 4 too many.

So i figure, either your survivability, your skills, or your combat potential would be a bit lower than your build makes them seem. Probably a simple calculation mistake but still funny considering we found someone else messing up before.

Now if Arasmes finds some mistake in my sheet, we've come full circle ^_^

Liberty's Edge

Sheesh. If I get picked I gotta make sure I do all the math right. Haha.

I may even go ahead tonight and make a new alias and bump up the numbers tonight, just in case. Depends on whether or not my home ravenloft game has a lull or not.

Darius, he is middle aged. Its actually point buy of: 13,15,13,13,17,7 (with elf modifiers and middle age penalties and bonuses). For point buy, it's 3+7+3+3+13-4=25 ;)

From background: "Being just past middle-aged, Zaeos has lived over 175 years already, and seen and done much in that time.", age is 199. He's excited to possibly help found a kingdom for his bicentennial birthday, haha.

Haha, aye, age boni. With elf, thats reasonable in Kingmaker. Never really occured to me to be honest. For humans, that could be crippling, and in normal circumstances, I never make Level 1 characters anything but young adults, only really use age if starting level is higher and i can work in their past experiences, so they don't just suddenly get up and completely change their live because of some midlife crisis ^_^

Guess I have to make sure you don't reach the place some other way then.

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
oh, nice, a crit threat...maybe you don't get to be there first :)
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
and confirmed, too :) Just kidding, of course. Sorry for the false claim regarding your stats.

That's alright lol. Originally I made Zaeos for that savage tide one so it was 24 pt buy up to 20 1 for 1 after age and race changes, so age was irrelevant and chosen for flavor. I kept it though when I reworked him.

I know, we talked in the Savage Tide one. I was the original Inquisitor/Zen Archer Monk - build there, Saria Adura if you remember. But I'd suggest if we want to talk more, we take it to PM instead of highjacking this thread, trying to show how active we are while we wait for a decision :D

I'm going to drop out of the running here. Darius or Zaeos is the obvious choice.

OOC: Odd. I was in a hurry and trusting hero lab's craft costs. The bow looks right, as do the cold iron arrows, but the adamantine should only be a single arrow instead of 50, and it's the wrong price either way. I'll rework it if I'm picked, not going to sweat it otherwise.

Why are you two thinking about murdering one another, that seems terribly small-minded. There's more to life than just shucking through some corpse's pockets. Build a nice enough place out here, and the people will come to us to be robbed. No need to murder them at all. They'll show up, grow up, pay taxes like it's their privilege, raise their children to do the same. Pretty good deal, all we have to do is find a likely spot that excites people, then make some irrelevant promises like "Noone's getting eaten by the dragons, and we're going to hunt down that evil cult of Rasputin." and the settler's pour in, life savings in their caravans and fully intending to "make a new life" as loyal subjects. Murdering one another over the fastest person to reach a trade hut, indeed. All you care about is a trivial sum of money. This land deserves a better criminal.

"I don't think about killing someone, I do. Had I wanted him dead, he'd not be around to listen in. A death is not something to cause in the spur of a moment, lest one acts in defense. Otherwise it is to be cherished. Something grand to be appreciated.

People will come to us to get robbed? Shucking through corpse's pockets? What do you take me for, some small-minded criminal murdering in cold blood?
I'll have you know I don't approve of your accusations. I'm a man of honor, and by that honor, I was always on the right side of the law.
And nobody that could claim otherwise can testify any more. And facts may have evaded you, but this here is a wilderness land. A place that needs pioneers, a place that needs work, before you have anything resembling civilization here. Thats work that will take years, and then it's still mostly wilderness. Your wild dreams of people coming with gold-ladden caravans wishing to teach their children how to pay taxes are at best hopeful visions, for at least a couple more years, and thats if we are lucky.
And if you don't see the appeal of a sportive challenge, like a tour through this here beautiful wilderness, combined with a little wager, then perhaps you are not the right person for the job. Had I meant to kill, then that arrow there would not stick in a tree. But if you step back and think for a moment why this is uncharted wilderness, then perhaps you'll find your answer yourself. There's far greater dangers than ME, or you in these here woods. And no person applying for this job that can't make it through to the Trading Post alive is even worth being considered as a guide and tracker. Neither can somebody guarantee a groups safety when he can't even keep their own camp safe. If someone intends to play foul, let them come, one less competitor.
So aye, keep your crimes and accusations to yourself, and let actions speak instead of mockery."

Liberty's Edge

When are you making your selection GM? I didn't get a chance to make my sheet tonight, my home game ran late. If i have time I'll make it tomorrow.

Like I said, the only things that would change is the point buy and purchases. All skills and feats, and traits would remain the same.

Backstory will be fleshed out tomorrow, or if selected before then, before my first post. Synopsis is that he is a woodsman, and a hunter of people. Who those people are depends on who's paying. He has no faith in the law of the cities, because he's seen it used far too many times as a shield for the corrupt and as a weapon against the defenseless. Because of that, his main motivation for building a kingdom would be to create a new law system in which the corrupt can't take advantage of the average person, because everyone would have a fair chance. I fully expect this to be a roleplaying change for him from true neutral to lawful neutral.

His role in the party would be the wilderness guide, and the tracker. His kingdom role would probably spymaster or royal assassin. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Ok, second try since this recruitment seems to still be open. May I present Taren Sernakov, Human Ranger aiming for the archery style. Currently not looking to take any archetypes as none seem to really fit.

I am going to work on the character sheet, but here are the basics.

Feats/Abilities/Traits:

Feats:
Precise Shot
Point Blank Shot

Abilities:
Str: 14 (5)
Dex: 16(10)+2 = 18
Con: 13(3)
Int: 12(2)
Wis: 14(5)
Cha: 10(0)

Traits:
Bastard - campaign
Reckless
Knowing Thy Enemy - FE(humanoid(human)) - Knowledge(local)

Skills
Perception: +6
Survival: +6
Acrobatics: +9
Knowledge(local): +5
Ride: +8
Stealth: +8
Heal: +6
Knowledge(geography): +5

Background:

Taren stood on the hill swearing as his shot fell short of it’s mark and the horse, injured rider slumped forward on the saddle, disappeared into the copse of trees.
Damn, no way I will catch him and it is unlikely the other shot was fatal. Knowing that his time serving in the Surtovan legions was at an end, unless he wished to face a court marshal and quick beheading, Taren turned and began to head south.

The plan had been simple. All Taren was to do was lead the small troop of soldiers into the ambush. He did not know who the ambushers were, all he knew was that the hundred gold in his pocket had seemed like a good idea. This was not the first such “accident” that Taren had caused, most at the bequest of one benefactor or another. But, that had always been Taren’s way. He had never had a problem working for the highest bidder. Being the son of a maid working in the Surtova home, he had grown up watching the privileges given the noble children, and hated it. His mother had been cared for by Baron Gustov Surtova, thirteenth in the line to the throne, if and when the head of the family chose to claim the Dragon Throne. She had been a maid and a house servant. Taren was sure that she had been more, and that he was the result of that more, but had no proof and his mother had taken whatever secrets she had to the grave with her. He had considered approaching the Baron, but had never had the courage. Instead, he had left the estate and enrolled in the Surtovan military forces.

Taren had enjoyed the military training, but what he truly enjoyed was scouting and working slightly apart from all those enamored with the pomp and structure of the regular soldier. No, Taren liked staying in the woods and sniping at enemies from a distance. After all, why take a risk facing an enemy face to face when you could plant an arrow in the man’s back from a hundred paces.

After two years of training with weapons, Taren had begun to be sent out with scouting troops to make sure that the other noble families were not attempting to recruit mercenaries and other forces which might create problems for the King-Regent elevation to full king. Taren does not recall the first time that the hooded man approached him in the tavern he frequented in Port Ice. The first few times, the man simply talked with Taren, asking him questions about the troops and their training. A few weeks later, the questioning had been hesitant to answer these questions, but a few ales and a few coins and Taren’s tongue had loosened.

It was probably a year after they first met that the man had first asked Taren to lead a scouting troop into an ambush. The man had instructed Taren to wear a red bandage around his right arm to keep him safe. Well, the ambush had taken place, and while Taren had taken an arrow to his leg, he had survived, something that he could not say for the others in his force.

Because of the injury, and the fact that his troop had been wiped out to the man, except for Taren, he was taken off duty for a few weeks. During this time, Taren spent more and more time in the tavern, the strange man often there as well asking more questions and buying more drinks.

It took nearly a year before Taren was once more allowed to serve as part of another scouting party. He spent many days, and cold wet nights, with the scouting groups, and as part of military training on the Surtova’s vast estates. Finally, he was assigned as one of three scouts to travel with a moderate sized contingent of Surtovan troops being sent south to “bolster” the defenses around the Brevian capitol in New Stetven.

Well, as the man had instructed him, Taren lead the troops through a narrow ravine in the hills just south of Grayhaven. There the trap had been sprung and Taren, fool that he was, had just sat on his horse, red bandage wrapped about his arm, as the strange emblem less forces had attacked from both sides. First arrows had flown, then the enemy had swarmed out of their hiding places. The Surtovan forces had been wiped out. Unfortunately, one of the other scouts had not been with the troops, as had been intended. Apparently, he had decided to trail the main force for some reason. When Taren had seen the man, Taren had aimed and fired his bow several times. One arrow struck the man in his arm, but it had not taken him out. So, now Taren knew that the scout knew who the turncoat was, leaving Taren with no choice but to head south and evacuate Brevoy with all haste.

A week later, mostly spent sleeping out of doors, not exactly Taren's favorite place, except for several nights spent in barns. Fortunately, most of these farmers had unlocked hen houses and storage where Taren had managed to acquire fresh eggs and cheese, Taren had been heading south. Yesterday he had passed Restov. What lay south he did not know. Perhaps someone in the River Kingdom's could use his talents as a scout. He doubted he would manage to gain employment as he had before, but there were always those looking for a hired sword, or bow.

As Taren looked, having just crested a hill, sweat running down into his eyes from what had ended up being an unseasonably warm day, he saw the outpost of Oleg. Supposedly it was the last such outpost for many days as the lands to the south were untamed, but a necessary place for him to travel to get away from the forces he had no doubt were following him. So, Taren again began trudging south toward the outpost wondering what would be found there, and whether his now meager reserve of coins would be sufficient to supply him for the trip further south.

---------
---------

My intention with Taren would be to stick mostly with Ranger. Future options would be to grab 1 level in Wizard and then go Arcane Archer, or go with Horizon Walker. Some of this will depend upon what the party needs and develops going forward.

For rolls in the campaign, most likely role is Marshal, Spymaster would also fit well. Assassin might work, but for now he is likely not that evil, but if he is being paid, then he would likely consider it.

--------
Sorry for how late this is. I was told that the earlier alchemist I submitted did not really fit what the party was looking for as they were looking for a non-arcane full BAB character.

I will put the character sheet together tomorrow if selected, but the above feats/traits/stats should give a pretty good idea of the direction of Taren.

--------
If people are interested in my posting style, here is Tkaara, a human female oracle in a WotW campaign I am in. Feel free to also check out any of my other characters., Kintal. Drakra, and Kzrira all are characters in campaigns that have good role playing in my opinion.

When are you making your selection GM?

I'm hoping to make it by the end of the weekend.

Sorry Zaeos was silent during the debate because he's already en route to the trade post, head start! (Evil, I know)

I saw the DM said he would allow one drawback, so if he confirms it I am going to change pioneer trait to perception +1 and take wilderness emissary, +1 survival (so no change there) and +1 linguistics and class skill. Being a good scout, might be helpful to occasionally drop a point in it for additional languages so that he can understand whomever he is stalking for the group. His drawback would of course be pride, since that is something he has in abundance.

Liberty's Edge

I took a drawback on my original submission for this game (who was a swashbuckler), and I think I may take one for this character for a perception boost. I already have a +6 but the party composition looks like it could use a little more in the perception field. I'm thinking of making a small adjustment to this character when I update him to 25 point buy and giving him a little more wisdom, so that when I roleplay him into becoming lawful neutral, I take a few zen archer levels.

Aye, I also reworked Darius slightly.

I choose Zon-Kuthon as Deity based on a hasty google search, as mentioned above.

However, I am not really happy with Darius having a religious justification for his sadism. That is part of his nature, and he should be aware that it's something twisted.

I am aware that certain Deitys were called out, such as Abadar who wishes to spread civilization. The problem I see here is that Darius should be a rugged man who likes his wilderness just the way it is.

He can understand the need for civilization just fine, he can support the plans to cultivate land, to build a new kingdom, heck, he wants to take part in it on a personal level.
But regardless of all that, he still, personally, will feel more "at home" in nature. I just don't see a person who prefers to be in cities be someone that focuses so much on being capable of being "out there in the woods".
Sure, after a trip he loves coming back into a city, enjoy a good ale in the bar, maybe a girl for the night, a soft bed and a meal he did not have to catch and roast himself.
But he should never feel "as alive" in a city as out there. So i moved him to Neutral Evil(rather than lawful) and replaced Zon-Kuthon with the Green Faith, which also conveniently provides access to the trait Eyes of the Wild.
As said, I see nothing about his personality change from this swap, as his persona was already "fixed" when I felt the need to pick a god following a post earlier in this thread. Only his justification is now gone. Sadism is no longer a religious act, it's just his nature.

Also, I tried to make a point for not choosing one of the suggested deities that I hope is understandable. He would not be a very religious person, just follow some empty gestures(much like a commoner happily living in a city may, hanging herbs from a doorway as sign of respect for nature). While radical followers of that faith may be opposed to civilization or it's spread in form of cities, he's more of a superficially religious person.(I am searching for the right word, but can't figure out the proper english term).

If that is too far out there to be considerable as submission, then I'll have to accept that. But since I don't own the inner sea deity book, and thus have little to go on seeing how thats copyrighted material, I would not feel very comfortable playing a deeply religious person of a faith I, as player, know nothing about.

Thanks for understanding.

Ok, so here is Steven Evil's character. I'm still typing the backstory but here is the crunch so you may look over it and let me know if there are any questions/concerns or whatnot.

And here is Soren's backstory. I warn you, it's kind of long.

Background:
Soren was born on the outskirts of Brevoy in a small farming village called Haam.

His father was a hunter by trade who did work for the village butcher and his mother was a seamstress. They never really had much in the way of money, but since Soren's father provided well enough in the way of food, so they never went hungry.

Soren never fit in with the other village children. He was always a loner, always exploring the woods instead of playing games, and more often than not this not only got him picked on by the other kids, but also got him in trouble with his mother on many the occasion.

As Soren got older he started to notice things. Things like how the village always seemed poor, even though they produced plenty in the way of crops and meat. Things like how all of the adults seemed terrified of a noble who would ride into town once a month on a huge white horse and demand his taxes. Things like how his father would never look him him the eye when he asked about the noble, and why everyone gave him everything they had. The answer was always the same:
That's just how it is Soren. He owns the land, so we have to pay him. It's the law...

Soren was never satisfied with that answer. However, every adult he spoke with would give him some variation of the same.

Eventually, Soren became old enough to be a hunter on his own, and with the training his father gave him throughout his life, he was a damn good one. He brought in just as much game as any of the adults, and for his first month, he thought he was rich. Never had he thought he would have as much coin as he did, and he relished in it. It only lasted so long though, because eventually the "noble" landowner came.

Soren went to the town square with the rest of the adults, his bow on his back and his arms crossed, a look of defiance on his face. He watched the noble and his assistant read off of a list, of each person in the village who owed the noble for their "right" to practice their trade. His defiant smirk faded, though, when his name was called, and the amount owed was read. A full three quarters of his earnings. He strode forward, ready to argue at the unfairness of it, when he noticed the guards the noble had. Two fully armored warriors, with massive swords on their backs stood on either side of the fop, their gaze masked by the slits in their black full plate. The noble grinned at Soren, as the youth faltered, and spoke in the most condescending tone the boy had ever heard.
You were going to defy me, weren't you? Be glad you didn't, boy. My taxes are the law. Breaking it will only earn you a beating and time in the jail. I own this land. I own these houses. I own you. And don't ever forget it.

And so went Soren's experience with the corrupt system he came to distrust. For the next year it was the same. Once a month the fop would come, take three quarters of everyone's earnings, and leave. He eventually got tired of it.

On his eighteenth birthday, the fop came again. This time, though, Soren tracked him through the woods, and waited until the group made camp for the night. He watched as they dined on fine meat and wine, and laughed at the village people, and how they didn't even have a proper inn. An anger took hold of the boy, and before he himself even knew what he was doing, an arrow from his own hand struck the noble in the back, right between the shoulder blades.

He stayed in that spot just long enough to watch the noble fall forward into the dirt, and then he ran. He knew the forest like the back of his hand, so the two knights who came looking for him never had a chance at finding him.

Thinking he could never go back home without endangering his family, he doubled back to the noble's camp, stole the money the fop had taken from the village, and made his way into the city. He got a room in a tavern, and debated on what to do next. For the next two days, he wandered around, taking in the sights of this new place, and the wonders of it all. On the second night, in the tavern, he heard people speaking of the murder of a son of a major noble who was collecting taxes, and smiled inwardly. The hunt was on for a youth from the village, but no one from his home would give him up, so the authorities had nothing to go on, not even a description. His smile left, though, when he heard what the "law" had allowed the noble's family to do.

The village had been burned, each house in turn as the families watched, even as they tried to give the boy up, but at that point it was too late. The fields had been trashed by men on horses, the shops and stalls in the square ransacked and bashed to pieces. A cadre of mercenary guards had been placed there, to watch for the return of the murderer and to ensure the villagers wouldn't step out of line again.

His anger seethed, and boiled, but it had to wait. He was quickly running out of the stolen coins, and needed income. It came in the form of a missive, hammered to the notice board in the tavern, for the capture of a fugitive who had fled into the woods after a daring prison escape. Soren tracked the man for three days, and finally caught him. He put an arrow in the man's knee, stopping his escape. So began a career as a bounty hunter. Soren would take any kind of job that involved the woods, and nature, eventually building up a repertoire of skills that were sought after by the guard time and time again. Not all of the men he brought back were alive, but to Soren, if they were worth just as much dead, then it was of no consequence.

It was an ill fated day, then, when he was dragging the corpse of a murderer wanted by the guard into the barracks when he heard a cry.
You! Boy! Stop there!

He recognized it, and turned slowly to see an older man striding quickly toward him. It was the assistant of the noble he had slain two years prior.
I recognize you! It was your face I saw fleeing into the night after Lord Kubrik was slain by an arrow! Guards! Stop him! Stop the murderer!

The guards started for Soren, but he was too quick. He fled the city that night, and made his way into the woods. For several weeks he wandered, hunting and evading anyone he saw on the roads. He spent his nights debating on what to do, as he had no village to return to, and his identity known to the guards as the murderer of Lord Kubrik.

Eventually, fate provided him with an answer. As he made his way on a road heading out of Brevoy, he happened across a carriage raid being carried out by a well known clan of bandits. After the deed was done, he approached them, and offered his skills to their group.

For the next year, he became quite the bandit. His tracking skills provided many opportunities for attacks on merchants and other folk staying off the roads to avoid attention, and his bow and sharp perception prevented many from reaching the bandit's camps and carrying out raids in the name of the law. Eventually, however, the clan fell to infighting as bandits usually do, and Soren was once again on his own. With a bow he took from a caravan guard he slew in a battle a few days prior, he made his way toward a trading post to resupply and make his way to a new place, where he could start again, and perhaps not constantly be on the run anymore.

I did this for the original thread, and I think it was pretty useful for getting an idea of the overall type of submissions. I think our GM was planning on choosing by today-ish, so if there's anyone else out there holding back, now's the time. We still have a little bit of time before the group leaves the Trading Post, so if there are last minute submissions or changes to make, you should have plenty of time to finish them before being introduced into the game.

Sounds good Alexander.

I went ahead and updated the character sheet linked so that it's easier to reference and see (and ready if I get picked).

Looking over character sheets now, hope to put out the decision later this afternoon.

They all seem equal in quality, so it is hard to choose.

I guess that means good luck to everybody. Competition feels even fiercer when there's only one spot and one role to fill, but I hope whoever gets the spot will prove to be worthy of the honor.

Good luck! I have to say, we had a very niche role to fill so we didn't really have a lot of chances to make ourselves stand out from each other, so to my wilderness stalking brothers, may the best hunter/tracker win!

OOC: Good luck all, especially the existing group who were stranded waiting on this. Thanks for being patient/friendly!

Good luck everyone, and thanks for the consideration Winds of Fate!

you forgot to roll the bluff check...

No need. Bluff is used for lying.

Now if I had said I was the 'only' choice, then I would need to bluff.

Soren Bowman, you may go ahead and report to the discussion thread.

Thank you all for replying to the replacement request.

Congrats, Soren - have fun!

Awesome! Thanks a bunch!
