Aye, some clarification would probably be in order. To sum up:

  • He has lost his hopeknife(or it was stolen), probably with some engravement like his lovers, so we KNOW it's his.
  • He commissioned a new hopeknife, because his was gone.
  • Whoever found(or stole) HIS hopeknife, used it to make his death seem like a suicide.
  • His newly commissioned Hopeknife also went missing.

=> The question, then, is: If his hopeknife was lost and he commissioned a new one, why would anybody believe his lost hopeknife to be a suicide weapon? Why did the murderer not use ANYTHING else, like a simple kitchen knife?
Why did it have to be his hope knife, when it would take all credibility from setting it up as suicide with so little research done?

Speculation:
One possibility would be that it was, in fact, a message. Add to that the fact that the supposed murderer leaves a letter in the room he booked(must have expected that the room would be searched and the letter found). Possibly Melira is the REAL name of someone involved in this whole mess.

Also, a half-orc oracle has gone missing. And a half-orc paid to get the wolves inside the city. And the one dealing with hopeknives is a half-orc(seemingly concerned with our motives). There's quite a lot of half-orcyness involved. Makes one believe that human that supposedly killed Rodrik is either teaming up with them, or was in fact a half-orc himself. Possibly one known around Trunau that had to use magic to alter his looks to prevent identification.
=> Dunno about you guys, but Half-Orcs will be under general suspicion for Dvalin until we know more.

Don't forget the crafter working for the half orc was also a half orc and went missing/quit, someone there ask for his name and description and last known residence/time of disappearance.

We also need clarification if the hopeknife found with the body HAS the engraving, it could very well be the commissioned hopeknife killed him and the original is still 'lost'.

PS paizo really needs to make a default avatar for EACH campaign, really annoying having to select it for each one every post.

Rodrick did give Brinya his hopeknife and had it engraved with a love message.

Hu, the extra crafter was also an half-orc? Must have missed that in descriptions but even worse.

As for the hopeknife? I would expect both his lost one and the one he ordered would have the engraving.
Also, it was specifically stated that the proposed suicide weapon was HIS hopeknife, not just "a hopeknife", so I had kind of taken it for granted that that engraving was found.(How else would they know it was his own, rather than someone elses?)

oops,I thought this was discussion thread so I didn't ooc anything! Sorry. Also I apparently misread, and we don't yet know the race of the apprentice.but she assumed it was finished, not for sure, and I would assume engraving would be the final step, so there is a chance that it hadn't been engraved yet (or that it was and then used to stab him to death)

So were at: find the oracle, find the assistant that quit, and determine if the knife that was use for the suicide was the original one, or the one he was having made that Sara can not find, is that about right? Boram will post after we find out anything from Ruby.

About right. And of course the half-orc party that trashed the room at the inn and graffiti'd it, and the one who hired the farmers. And the missing knife (since there are now two).

I believe Brynia gave her hopekife to Rodrick and he did the same? If so we are actually looking for Brynia's knife not Rodrick's

Yeah it would have an inscription to Rodrik from Brynia or similar, like his had. Though we aren't sure if the hopeknife we have is inscribed or not. If it isn't it's the missing one from the shop, if it is, its either the one he lost, or they had his new one inscribed the same before it went missing. Ask The shopkeeper if he had the new one inscribed and what it said (see if it matches what we have on the hopeknife we possess).

Those that visit young Ruby find that she does not know much, but is eager to make up for the help you gave her at the ceremony. She has you follow her and moves to the Barterstones (area N). A large white sword has been painted on the eastern face of the largest rock in this area, visible above the roofs of the market stalls set up in the
stones’ shadow and the guardleader is diligently scrubbing the sword from the rock. Ruby lets into Omast for the tongue-lashing he gave Dvalin. As you can only watch, the young lady explains that her father will not be pleased if he does not help out more with the good dwarves and their business. As expected, you do not think the head of the guard is very happy to be dressed down in your presence, and can barely conceal a bitter glare. But meekly nods and, after the exchange, leaves his task and cleaning equipment somewhat dejectedly and walks off. He seems to be making a beeline for the Ramblinghouse.

Those talking to Sara find her happy with their questions and she compliments you on your diligence and explains: "Urnsul
was a new apprentice I took on several weeks ago, but
the woman went missing the day after Ruby’s hopeknife
ceremony. Urnsul was a recent arrival to Trunau, and I took pity on her when the young half-orc explained her tragic story in broken Common. The knife you gave me is the knife I was working on for Rodrik, but there is no way he should have had it yet and no reason for him to take it as it is not finished yet."

Sara lets you known she had been sheltering Ketezra, an oracle who asked for her protection after Rodrik's death. She brings the half orc oracle out from the back, and he is carrying a journal.

Ketezra, the semi-lame half-orc decides to tell you his story: “I went to hiding. Rodrik had plans to go back to the Plague House, but because of the unease I felt from my visions, I suggested he leave his journal with me, which he did. The night of his death, my visions were even more terrible, though still indecipherable. When news of
Rodrik’s death reached me in the morning, I knew it must
have been foul play, so I fled the Sanctuary, fearful that
whoever targeted Rodrik would come after me as well. His
death grieves me to no end, but at least my efforts bought
me enough time to share this information with you.”

“Rodrik originally approached me to ask for advice
while courting Brinya Kelver. The love-struck fool—bless
his soul—thought I might have some special insights
into the traditions of her people or visions of the couple’s
everlasting happiness... but come now, do I look like the
romantic type?”
He smiles wryly, then shakes his head and
moves on. “I couldn’t help him with his relationship, but
we gradually became close friends. I’d been experiencing
vivid hallucinations of white swords or crosses, and dreams
of the Plague House outside town. When I told him of
them, he seemed to think my dreams might help with his
investigation. I told him about my visions as best I could, but
the muse of my nightmares is as abstruse as she is unkind.”

"Here is the journal Rodrik kept -- it may be helpful. I would check out the Plague House at some time. Rodrik was obsessed with it."

Augier holds back with the others

The groups decide to return to the Ramblinghouse, because that is where their informal headquarters is, and that is where Omast is heading. Also you notice, as Boram and company follow Omast back to the Ramblinghouse, Ruby seems curious, and follows along. As Boram was moving cautiously, it is obvious that some stalking is going on, and Ruby seems curious to see how this plays out. Omast has no idea he was followed.

As you arrive, Omast has taken a corner seat in the Ramblinghouse inn, and is already on his second mug, which he his filling from a large stone pitcher which he has ordered. Typically it is for groups, but Omast seems determined to finish it off himself.

Ruby continues to follow you, ready to partake in any discussions you are going to have. Having helped you once, she seems to be determined to help you more.

Rock looks at her appearance with some raised eyebrows, but sits at a large table in the common room and has a large lunch ordered. His penchant for pig continues as it a large cured ham with cheese and bread seem to be already laid out.

Regardless of how the Ruby situation is handled, both groups compare notes and decide where to go next. It seems obvious that there is enough evidence to dispel the fact that Rodrik committed suicide and that the Plague House is a dangerous place. A very dangerous place.

Well, been very busy, will be very busy a few days

Dvalin, feeling that Omast probably feels a kind of hatred for him, is sensible enough to try and avoid confrontation with him. He will not talk with him, approach him, or spend more time in his presence than needed.

If Ruby tags along, though, he will stay close to her and be on the lookout for danger(especially any half-orcs). We were attacked once already, and there's no guarantee it won't happen again. If so, he'll try and shield Ruby from potential danger.

When the group gathers to decide on further action, Dvalin will raise another point:
Also, did someone do a Sense Motive on that Oracle?
"So this Oracle told Rodrik about visions he has about the plague house being dangerous as if to scare him away, HE knew Rodrik was going to investigate there, convinced him to hand over his journal, and then Rodrik dies, "seemingly" from a suicide using a hopeknife. Oh, and he was hiding with another half-orc at the place where those hopeknifes are made. And a half-orc arranged the attack by wolves. And now that we found him, he hands over that journal. I mean, he did NOT come to the guard for aid. He did NOT hand over the journal at the beginning of the investigation. He said news of Rodriks death reached him early that morning and he went and came here. But no news have come to the smithy? He did not know there was an ongoing investigation? And that Smith did not find it weird that there was an order for a hopeknive that was not fulfilled, yet Rodrik was found seemingly having commited suicide with his hopeknife? Did she not think that someone may be interested in the fact that Rodrik should not even have HAD a hopeknife at the time of his death? Makes no sense, unless she's involved in all of this. And the Oracle? He went and hid with his half-orc brethren instead of aiding the investigation. And now that we found him, got too close? He directs us towards the Plague House which he himself said to be dangerous. Probably is, I reckon there's an ambush waiting for us. And if there's not a Half-Orc at the bottom of this, I'll buy a Keg.
Either way all of this sounds mighty wrong to me. I'd say the Watch best keep a close eye on those Half-Orcs, and these two especially, until we know more!
"

"It would appear that our next stop should be the plague house. Ruby, what do you know of the building?" Tegnar adds to the discusion.

Ruby speaks with a voice of one used to describing things:
"The Plague House, also known as the Burned Church, was
Trunau’s original church of Iomedae. When orc raiders
burned the building down and killed the priests within, the
church of Iomedae decided to build a new chapel inside the
city walls. The ruined church became known as the Plague
House following a tragedy 50 years ago, when Trunau was
afflicted with a plague. The town’s authorities hastily
rebuilt the structure and used it to quarantine the plague
victims, but a mysterious fire consumed the building a few
days later, killing everyone inside—patients and healers—
and leaving the infamous site once again in ruins. None
have attempted to rebuild it since."

there’s subterfuge for you, he’s headed to the same place we are

As Boram stealthily follows Omast, he couldn’t resist the urge to smile and point as the guard leader goes into the Ramblinghouse. Before they enter Boram sees Ruby following them so he smile and waves. As they enter the establishment, seeing Rock enjoying a snack they join him at the table. Boram climbs up on one of the benches and patteing the seat beside him the says to Ruby,

”Come on Missy, you might as well join us, yeah.”

a little early to be drinking

As the barmaid comes around Boram order two apple ciders, one for himself and one for Ruby, along with a plate full of chitlins, to snack on. Boram listens to Dvalin viewpoint on the situation and as he is crunching on a pork rind he interjects

”Isn’t the smithy lady on their city council er some such? If’n we can’t trust her who can we trust?”

he then takes another bite of chitlins and continues

”No offence Dvalin. But with yers and Omast’s attitude, if’n I was tha oracle feller I wouldn’t have gone ta tha officials either. Yeah. But yer right the watch sould keep an eye on ‘em and tha woman ‘at got hired and quit all fast like. Have we even found her yet? What was her name? I don’t seem ta remember.”

Boram eats another porkrind as he nods his head as Aggghhh and Dvalin talk about catching the bushwackers on the way to the ‘plague house’ impressed with Ruby’s ability to communicate he remembered she followed them and probably would still, if not give a task.

this girls too smart for her own good

Boram points out

”we have not informed our benefactor Kurst about ‘ese latest events, what say we write a letter ta him and have it delivered. Our messenger would need ta be someone he knows and trusts, gosh who do ya think we can trust with such an important mission?”

Boram looks at the group, then at Ruby as she drinks her cider and tries a pork rind, he then looks at Rock and winks

”What do you dwarves think, Ruby made us part of her team, shall we make her an honorary member of tha clan and have her deliver a letter of explanation to Kurst? Who’s got pen and paper and a clear hand?”

I am not keeping track of the drinks can Boram run a tab?

Honestly, I believed we were having this "talk" with no outsiders present. Not in the common hall of a inn. Talking about suspects in private is fine, but neither is causing a Witch Hunt, nor risking them learning about suspicion. I somewhat trust Ruby but still(and thats ignoring other people present), one wrong word to the wrong person about what she(or someone else) overheard, and one of those Half-Orcs may skip town. Or, alternatively, a mob may take it for granted and take justice in their own hands while we yet lack proof"

That little dwarf-wanna-be...whats his role to play in this...

"Yeah, you go ahead and trust that smith on basis of her being on the city council. A good reason to withhold information such as those facts about the hopeknives, and politicaly ambitious people are known to never be involved in intrigue, right? I trust Council Members as far as I can throw them one-handed."
Dvalin almost spits on the floor following that comment, but restrains himself in the last second as he realizes Ruby is watching, and she's seemingly amused by his almost-faux pas.
To cover his momentary embarassment, he takes a deep sip from the tankard in front of him before continuing:
"As for mine and Omast's attitude, I doubt the oracle knew me before I came. Still, then, why not Rodriks brother who is on the Watch? Or his Father, who is leader of the Town Militia? Did he not think they may be interested in punishing whoever caused their family members death? Or did he fear just that? And ran to his half-orc accomplice who may have provided the murder weapon, with a conveniently missing apprentice."

As Boram attempts to get Ruby to deliver a letter to Kurst, Dvalin listens in horror.

He's either naive or brilliant. He knows we are being watched in the city. We've been targeted for an attack before. And now he wants to write our findings in a letter and send this lonely girl to deliver it. Either he did not even consider that whoever watches us may intercept the girl, or he plans on that. He's not a dwarf, after all, just a halfling...Dvalin is xenophobic. Every non-dwarf is suspect-

"A fine idea, and if she gets to be a honorary clan member, then as befits such a messenger, I shall be her escort while she delivers the letter. Tegnar, why don't you complete the honor guard by joining us?"

To Yarask and Ogden, he whispers:
"We'll catch up with you guys later, I already scouted out the city, I'll find a quick way to the Plague House"

"Like I said Dvalin I can't blame 'at oracle feller at all, Ruby's a big girl knows this town like tha back of her hand and aint afraid o' nothin, course is you feel safer in her company than going ta the Plague House with tha men, well, I guess I'm ok wit 'at"

Na, he's not naive. He knows what he's doing. But whats his motivation for placing all of us in peril and protecting those half-orcs he knows nothing about. Is Melira a Halfling name?

"Really now? You think an untrustworthy person will rub it in your face? You claim she's such a great person, so I wonder, what is YOUR reasoning for their actions? Because I fail to see any explanation in your defense of them. Do go ahead, explain why they are trustworthy by explaining their motives, rather than their wonderful personality or quoting their jobs. Why did neither of them find it sensible to approach Rodriks guard brother, or militia leading father? Surely they did not think those would be involved?"

Dvalin does not react to the mock salute, instead staring coldly at Boram.

"Ruby may know this place and not be afraid. Same could have been said about Rodrik. And whoever got him and attacked us may well be interested in that letter, so aye, I'll join her on this journey. It's still early in the day and it ain't gonna take long. If you can't contain yourself to scouting out the Plague House for signs of an ambush, tracks entering or leaving, before going in, you're welcome to rush ahead and try your luck, otherwise I'll be there soon enough. As for who I feel safer with, I'd turn my back to her without thinking twice, which can't exactly be said about you right now, lest you manage to back your wild claims of those half-orcs trustworthyness up in some way."

Having said those words, Dvalin finishes his tankard and shoves it away.

Even this drink tasted sour in this mood he got me in. There is foul play at work here, and you guys know it

Really, do let me know if I missed something here. Almost everything we found points to half-orcs being the culprit, and those two have far from water-proof stories from what they told. I'm merely advocating caution and them being observed closer and not taking as fact whatever they say. What makes you so certain they are not involved in this?

"Enough of this bickering. You sound like council members yourselves. Rock knows what we know and can give details to the city officials if necessary. Ruby, just go tell Kurst we are heading to the plague house as that seems to be the center of this and stay with him until we get back."

Looking at Dvalin and Boram, "We need to get a move on. If it's a trap, then it is but we go in knowing that and maybe we'll get to see exactly who is behind this. You can't go expecting every half orc in town to be in on this. It is obvious some are but this town has had half orcs in it for a long time without trouble. Let's go stick our necks out and see who tries to take our heads off."

Talk. Talk. Talk. Let's go and get this done with.

Dolgrym draws his warhammer and heads toward the door.

Ogden snorts at the verbal sparring, chewing on some of Rock's pork, "Boys, boys, let's na waste energy we should save for those rotten half-orc troublemakers."

He also attempts to smooth things over with Omast, grabbing a seat near him. "Yer relatives a feisty one, eh?" He chuckles, "Hope she didn't offend ye, and I don't doubt yer motives, but if'n there be anything ye forgot ta say, now's the time. Did ye know about Rodrik's interest in the plague house? And did ye not notice tha murder weapons was not Rodrik or Brinya's original dagger, son?" he also asks about this half-orc apprentice of the weaponsmiths who went missing.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16 specifically for if he is hiding something, Ogden has always been suspicious of him. Too many instances where a lesser sibling has held a grudge against an older one in authority for his liking.

After chatting with him, Ogden moves to the others, noting that there is naught to do but investigate the plague house, and keep their eyes open for any shenanigans as their suspect has some sway within the walls of the town as well.

"I agree that the Plague House is our next step but I don't feel comfortable letting Ruby walk alone. Dvalin and I can escort her and we will meet you at the gate."

Tegnar finishes his ale and also prepares to leave.

I've read the player's guide and I think we can trust her... I suppose I can divulge what's revealed there about Trunau as common knowledge, if not correct me please

Yarask gives Boram a stare before reluctantly nodding"Aye... I'd say so. She's actually married to a Dwarf. A dwarf-wizard, mind you, but she also is a council member. Her name..." - at this point the warrior seems mightily embarassed, which considering Yarask's usual scowl makes for a pretty comical picture - "Mmmhruph, yes... her name is Agrit Staginsdar. We can actually ask around but aside from comments about what those two do under their blankets I never heard anything bad about them... so trustworthy until proven wrong, I'd say"

Yarask also takes the time to nod emphatically at Boram's suggestion about Ruby:"Agreed. Seems to me the lass has good steel in her and she certainly deserves our help!"

As for Dvalin's argument, Yarask shakes his head before talking:"I agree half orcs are at the core of this whole mess. We all saw the evidence. But that doesn't mean all of them are guilty of conspiration or treachery. Also I don't want to hear talk about going alone scouting. We said the words, we are a clan, brothers in arms. No one takes risks he or she doesn't need to take. So, let's deal with what Omast knows and then let's check out the plaguehouse. If that's the enemy headquarter... all of us will be needed"

"Hear me talk! I never considered myself the cold headed one... not even before the slaughter..."

For the record I absolutely love the way Dvalin is being played. He's xenophobic and it shows in the interpretation, good job! Also, everyone else has been pretty great thus far, having a great time, really!

AUgier looks like he heard that someone was having sex with a chiken.

A dwarf woman married to a half-orc?! Urrgghhh! Foul, how would that even work?

Ogden pretends not to hear the latter discussion, instead scribbling notes in his journal. He suddenly stops mid-scribble. "The dwarf is a woman?!" he exclaims in disgust, then shoves his head back into the book, writing even more hurriedly as if attempting to cleanse his mind.

During that "topic", Dvalin does his best to keep Ruby's attention casually chatting in common with her, about her future dreams and what career she wants to pursue.
I sure hope you guys are using Dwarven to talk about the perceived pervertedness of interracial homosexual partners while a young girl is present...

well if I was a dwarven woman I may want to sleep with a half-orc instead of some of these guys also,

Boram smirks and answers Ogden

dwarven"No energy wasted Ogden, just chewing on some words with the fried pig skin"

hopping down from the bench he turns and helps Ruby off of the bench also, smiling he tells her

common"Ya heard Dolgrym, run off an tell yer brother what we are up too, yeah."

he then follows along behind Dolgrym

Dvalin, along with Tegnar, will escort Ruby while she delivers the letter.
While at first, he will continue his casual talk with her, about her future and whatever she wants to talk about, halfway over he also tells her to be careful around halflings:
"That they are sneaky and charming backstabbers and thieves may be a stereotype, but it is for a reason. They don't have the strenght or sturdiness of a good dwarf and are even smaller, so many of them cut purses, or use lies and scheming to get what they want.
Boram is somewhat ok, since he wants to be a Dwarf instead after realizing the faults of his race, but he still can't help his nature. So I'm not blaming him, but you'd still do well to be careful around him"

Dvalin's not sure if Boram tried to set her up as easy target...so he's trying to get her to doubt Borams intentions in the future. No bluff necessary, he is convinced of these truths himself, just sharing life experience
If the escort goes uneventful, he and Tegnar will then proceed to the city gate closest to the Plague House.

honestly, same thing as "stay in school" versus "enjoy drugs". Just because something seems more fun, does not mean she has to disregard logical thinking :)
Charisma: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (17) - 1 = 16
There, added a check for you. Just need to come across friendly enough to her so she listens to what I say, so don't even bother with an opposed check. I know you're more charming, as it should be. But guess who will be scouting ahead with you, and save your bacon if something goes wrong ;) Clansmate...that's more important than race, even to Dvalin.

Ruby nods as she listens to Dvalin and speaks to him as they deliver the message. "I did not know, I will make sure Boram stays out of trouble. We probably should not tell the guard about his tendency towards crime."

Omast continues to drink at the bar, and you are told by Cham:
"When he found Rodrik’s body, Omast
Frum fell off the wagon—hard. I don’t know what kind
of guilt is weighing the sergeant down so much, but
he’s been drinking and talking to himself nonstop. The
only meaningful work they could
find for the poor drunk is cleaning up the vandalism
that’s been drawn all over town."

A quick trip to the plague house, and you scout it from a safe distance.......
The Plague House’s front doors sit three feet above the ground.
Charred wooden beams and ash are all that remains of a
small porch and stairs that once led to the entrance. The small
windows flanking either side of the doorframe are broken
but a large stained glass window dominating the face of
the building to the right remains in fine shape, and shows a
varicolored image of Iomedae holding her sword aloft.

When the group is gathered just after midday, you consider entering the forbidding church.

Plague House is now linked at top as CURRENT MAP and on campaign tab -- may want to place our tokens on left row.

Someone needs to cut Omast off. Take charge barkeep, get him off. A drunk guard is a danger to himself and others.

Augier will look up at the sad remains of the plague house. Darn shame about the fire, they were doing good work.

DM did Omast reply to me, I approached him while he was drinking sullenly after being scolded by the girl.

Ogden looks up at the rather large structure. "Stay alert lads, somethin' about this place don't sit right." He looks around, "Well, aside from all the plague and death, I mean."

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20

Before heading to the plague house, Omast looked at Ogden with a faint glimmer of recollection.
"For a moment, I had managed to forget about Rodrik's death."
A look of extreme anguish comes over his face, and he struggles to maintain his composure. "I'd rather not talk about Rodrik at the moment." Omast holds the large pitcher out to Ogden, as if offering it to him.
