Toshizo begins reciting a stirring battle ballad in a loud voice.
Everyone receives a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls.

As a move action, Gilfroy readies his crossbow and steps five feet closer to the door.

The half-orc shakes off the effect of the poison, just in time to down another elf in tandem with Orik. Boram only nicks his target.

One remaining ambusher remains convinced of the reality of Gilroy's illusion, while the other draws a trident and steps forward to attack Toshizo.

What the &%@&!# was that all about?!? shouts the panting half-orc over the corpses strewn about the deck.
There's still one left!
The illusory rogue tumbles through some spaces to threaten the remaining elf.
Orik Fistbreaker |
Seeing his path to the remaining elf blocked by his mates, Orik takes the long way around, circling the small dinghy on the deck and the mast, and double moves into a flanking position.
"Give way elf, oor face t'same fate as yae'r frien's, ken?" says Orik pounding the hilt of his axe against is steel shield.

The final invader is knocked to the floor under the force of Felinros' blow. He twitches, but does not rise.
Combat over.
Before the Pathfinders even have a chance to catch their breath, a door burst open at the far end of the main deck and a man emerges, stuffing an arm through the sleeve of a faded blue overcoat. Above a thick brown beard broken in some places by streaks of grey and in others by jagged scars sits a bent nose and two wide-set eyes. This face, you all know, belongs to the Mermaid's commander, Captain Veane.
"Great Beyond, men!" he roars, tromping across the deck as he finally fixes his coat, "What in the hells is this?"
Gilfroy Fezziwig PFS |
"Invaders, Captain," Gilfroy announces, coming out of the cabin. He walks through the illusion of the half-orc rogue, who looks very puzzled at his sudden insubstantialness for a moment before vanishing in a puff of shadow. "Your lookouts appear to have been asleep at their posts, but our friend Hijikata heard their landing and left to investigate. Good thing, or we might have been murdered in our hammocks."

Orik Fistbreaker |
"Best o' luck tae yae takin' watch oop oon t'end o' the boot, fellas. Doon't gae fallin' in t'drink, eh? Mebbe a nice pipe'll keep ye awake oon yer shift, ken?"
Orik winks at the others not bothering to conceal his hidden message particularly well. He continues his search of the aquatic elves as the others scoot off to the prow.
GM Zahmahkibo |
As his companions brief Veane, Orik finds on each of the four elves an unlabled potion, two sunrods, a trident, and a set of masterwork hide armor. Three of the bodies also hold one javelin apiece.
The captain nods at Toshizo, and opens his mouth to reply, but before a word is uttered, a shout reaches your ears, and another man with a groomed beard and receding hairline emerges from belowdecks. This is Marzack Mallick, the Mermaid's first mate.
"Captain," he growls, "the ambassador..."
---
Scant seconds later, you have followed Captain Veane to the first mate's quarters which had served as Sephriel's for the duration of his lodging. This finely decorated cabin contains a brightly colored Qadiran rug, a small bookshelf, several storage trunks and barrels, and a modest bed. Lying face down on the ruffled, blood-soaked sheets rests the body of a tall, golden-haired elf in elegant bedclothes, his face covered in an intricately carved wooden mask.
Veane leaps toward the bed, turning Sephriel over and feeling for signs of life. Finding none, the captain shakes his head and looks downtrodden at the corpse. Mallick, standing outside the door, wipes a hand across is brow.
"I fear the Spire elves will have your hide for this failure, Captain," the first mate laments. As the words sink in, Veane pales and turns to the gathered Pathfinders with a look of pure terror in his eyes. The fear passes quickly, however, and his expression shifts into one of pure rage.
“You’re the only ones on this ship I don’t know well,” he says, sweeping a shaking finger about the room. “I’m not taking the rap for this, by Besmara, and neither is my crew. It might not be fair, but when we get to the Mordant Spire in three days, it’s you who’ll have to answer for Sephriel’s death!”
With that, he storms out of the cabin and up the stairs to the main deck, Mallick close on his heels, leaving you all alone in the room with Sephriel's lifeless body.
-Boram- |
"I don't know anything about dead bodies, but I do know about doors. I can check it to see if there is any evidence of someone picking the lock or not."
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Azeban Guitou |
"Not good," Azeban says, understating the situation immensely. His instinct for self-preservation already tells him that they'll need a definite culprit for the murder of the envoy within the three days if they want to survive, politically if not literally. "Secure the area and don't let anyone touch anything. We need to find who did this. Those of you who don't have investigative skills, secure the bodies of the invaders. Make sure none of them are desecrated by the crew. Also keep a look-out. Allies of the culprit may still be nearby."
The senior pathfinder's voice is calm and his face shows little emotion, focused on the job ahead. He casts a spell to detect any magic, scanning the entire room in turns.
Casting Detect Magic and holding it long enough to do the whole room.
While I'm at it, I'll also use it to identify the potion the elves are carrying.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
He then speaks a phrase and snaps his fingers, pristine white gloves crawling up his sleeves to cover his hands. He begins searching points of interest in the room, careful not to disturb too much and seeing if anything leaves a trace on his gloves.
Sleeves of Many Garments allows me to get mundane clothes out of nowhere.
Perception (take 20): 20 + 6 = 26 for anything to be found at the murder scene
"Are any of you trained in healing? We need to know what caused his death."
Anyone trained in Heal or has a good bonus in it? Also, remember that you can take 20 in Perception when you have enough time (1 minute).
"We'll have to speak with the Captain later. Hopefully he'll have calmed down."
HIJIKATA TOSHIZO |
Aiding another on Azeban on Perception. 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Brother Felinros |
"Ha, we save his ship and he tries to blame us. Perhaps he should meet a similar fate to the elves we slew for his incompetence and foolishness."
The half-orc then joins his companions in carefully examining the room. "If you notice anything let me know, I have some training in examining this closely like this..." You are somewhat surprised he is good at anything other than swinging his giant blade about.
Take 20 for a 28... if anyone wants to roll to aid another I believe Felinros has the best perception in the group...
Orik Fistbreaker |
Orik marches back out of the hold to stand watch over the bodies of the attacking elves while the others investigate the body and cause of death.
Orik keeps checking the elves but apparently they have no items on them...
Bloody, goot fer nothin' elves. 'Ttackin' a boot wit'oot reason is jes like those nasty gits. Got what they deserved, they did. If I sae any moore I'll deal 'em moore o' t'same."
After searching the corpses, he looks out for any other strangeness on board.
GM Zahmahkibo |
Behind the carven mask, Gilroy finds the face of an ordinary if a bit bloodless elf, with a look of peaceful sleep upon his face. On Sephriel's back, he notices a cluster of narrow wounds, still seeping blood.
Anyone may roll Heal to attempt to divine the nature of the wounds.
As the Pathfinders look about the room, they find no damage to cabin door itself, nor any fresh tool marks on the lock, suggesting that the door was either unlocked with a key or left open, rather than picked or forced.
Their search of Sephriel’s belongings reveals merely a collection of fine clothes, several works of elven literature in ornately bound books, and a scrimshaw pipe and empty sac smelling of tobacco.
