Having arrived on assignment in Katapesh only days ago, you have received an urgent message from Venture-Captain Wulessa Yuul requesting your immediate presence at her headquarters. Ripped from your previous duties, you anxiously await the Venture-Captain's arrival in a private meeting room of the Farseer Tower.

Aeris rolls his eyes as he hears that his assignment has changed - again. Finish a job in Qadira, off to one right outside Absalom, then I’m back to Garund, and then they change jobs on me! Well, at least last time I was here I was able to strike a blow against tyranny. I wonder what awaits me on this assignment?

He walks into the private meeting room, looking much like a tall, slender human. However, what might first be taken for an elaborately-cut cloak on his back, on closer inspection is revealed to be a pair of large wings tucked flat. Mostly a dark, smoky grey in color, with touches of crimson, the wings extend from about the level of his ears down to where the tips just brush the floor. His hair, longish and swept back from his face, is of the same dark grey as his wings.

After a quick scan of the room, he stands watchful and still, his head occasionally turning with an abrupt motion, then freezing in a new position. His face is narrow, with large, alert, amber eyes and a hooked nose, giving him a strangely birdlike appearance in keeping with his wings. He carries a long, beautifully-made bow behind his left shoulder, and a longsword and morningstar ride at his hip.

Hello all!

The second into the room is an ornate suit of armor. In black steel with faint hints of smouldering magic, it is in the Tian style with a helmet styled to look like a demon, including a pair of real horns that curl back from the faceplate. The chest-piece is adorned with a sword and sunburst symbol in gold and silver that identifies the wearer as a devotee of Sarenrae. His armaments are similarly impressive and varied, including a scimitar and Falchion of black metal. He looks about the room, his face concealed by the demonic visage of his helm's faceplate, but beneath his eyes glint with green light.

He nods to his fellow Pathfinder.

A frail young woman is ushered into the room, walking with little assurance and gazing at the two impressive presences with a hint of wariness. She is dressed in ample robes that are well-suited for the hotter climes of Garund, and wears many fetishes of Mwangi origin. Yet her most alien feature is her face: her skin is ebony black despite very classical Varisian traits, and her purple eyes seem to be bottomless pits of pure void.

"Greetings." she says with an almost non-existent self-confidence. "I am Ouroboreia. Just... Ouroboreia."

Striding into the private meeting room at the famous Farseer Tower in exotic Katapesh, Venture-Captain Wulessa Yuul wastes no time commencing her briefing.

"This has all the makings of a magnificent embarrassment," she begins sourly. "The Grand Lodge recently sent a delegation to the mansion house of Temel Passad in Kerse. Passad (some of you may have met him before) is an enormously wealthy devotee of the Prophecies of Kalistrade, and he happens to possess the only known copy of the Mutani Manual of Martial Mastery in the Inner Sea region. The delegates were tasked with obtaining this rare tome, by either purchasing or leasing it.

"By all accounts, Passad is a difficult man, but the delegation proved... stupendously inadequate to the task. Not only did they fail to secure the manual, but they also managed to grossly insult the merchant. Two of the representatives were manhandled off the property and taunted by Passad that under no circumstances would he part with the Mutani Manual unless the Society could earn it, challenging us to take it from a hidden location among his many holdings throughout the region. The third delegate, who happens to be one of the foremost experts on all things Tian, was detained by Passad for what he termed 'an extended conversation on the finer points of ambassadorial etiquette.' He’s invoked an obscure Druman statute involving foreign embassies, making this kidnapping perfectly legal in his government’s eyes."

Yuul grinds her teeth in frustration for a moment. "The Mutani Manual holds priceless information about the myriad martial arts styles practiced across all of Tian Xia, and is vital to a number of ongoing research projects being undertaken at the Grand Lodge. Harmidio Besai, the kidnapped negotiator, is one of the lead experts on several of those studies, and we need him back alive. Unfortunately, we do not know which of Passad's many holdings across the Inner Sea currently houses the Mutani Manual, which houses Besai, or if the two are held together. Investigators have identified 12 manors across the Inner Sea that are likely candidates, and strike teams will be hitting each one tomorrow morning. You will be hitting the one known as Ghenett Manor, just down the river, 50 miles west in central Katapesh. My contacts in the markets here have talked of much activity there recently, which is odd because Passad visits perhaps three or four days out of the year, so I believe that Ghenett Manor may hold one of our two objectives if not both. A barge will take you take you there a few hours from now.

"Do as little damage to the property as possible--we’re not vandals, after all. Also, take nothing else of worth from the place. We’re not common thieves. I cannot stress this strongly enough. Given our already ample embarrassment with Passad, please don’t add to that dishonor by making off with the man’s silverware or his grandmother’s brooch, for Abadar’s bloody sake. No doubt the villa is a sumptuous and tempting target, but you must keep this in the forefront of your minds: the tome and the scholar are all that matter. Everything else is a distraction. The Decemvirate will take a special interest in your conduct on this assignment."

Yuul pauses for a moment, the look of consternation returning to her face. "Lastly, we have reason to believe that others are in pursuit of the Mutani Manual, including agents of the Aspis Consortium. Be wary! Under no circumstances can the book fall into the hands of a rival organization.

"Now, do you have any questions?"

"As to questions, what sort of protections does this manor have? Need we prepare to open locks or dispel wards? Will there be guardians we need circumvent and keep from slaying should they impede us?"

”A difficult man, to say the least,” Aeris says archly, ”Passad is so full of himself it’s a wonder he doesn’t explode. And so wealthy I’m sure he wouldn’t miss a heap of jewels, much less a few trinkets. Still, I’ve no wish to tarnish the Society’s reputation. All the same, it would be a pleasure to recover the Manual and a fellow Pathfinder out from under the man’s nose. These super-rich who think they can rule over others! It’s tyranny by another name, I tell you, and the Everbloom will not stand for it.”

His spontaneous tirade done, Aeris listens to the Venture-Captain’s reply about any defenses Passad may have, then adds, ”You say you’ve heard of activity at Ghenett Manor. What more can you tell us about that? Who was there, how many, what were they doing?”

Any Knowledge checks apply here?

"You should prepare for anything and everything. Passad can be a rather secretive fellow, and I believe this has become something of a game for him--deadly though it very well may be. He has taken considerable efforts to hamper our intelligence-gathering. Expect the security to be strong and proceed with caution."

Yuul nods. "I’ve hired a westbound barge to ferry you up river tomorrow morning. It should take between 10 and 12 hours to reach the manor. There’s plenty of cover around the place, so secret yourselves until well after nightfall. There’s no reason to think that Passad’s security is especially concerned about the well-being of any intruders; his precautionary measures may indeed be deadly. After you have secured either the Mutani Manual or Besai--or, gods willing, both of them--make your way north and east to the trade spur that eventually follows the river back to Katapesh. You should be able to secure eastward transport with one of the many caravans that travel that busy highway."

You have an opportunity to purchase anything you wish (and can afford) before departing. Just note it in your next post.

The lazy, 12-hour trip up river is uneventful, and the laconic skipper sets the party ashore with no more than a nod as the barge continues on its way west. In the distance stands a great manor house, its imposing roof a patch of dark set against the night's first twinkling stars. While the surrounding area is lightly wooded, a well-maintained road makes a bee-line for the manor house. The walls of the manor can be seen through the trees from the river’s edge, capping a low, flat hill to the immediate north.

Approaching the house reveals 15-foot walls surrounding the manor, all made of a polished grey stone with artful Qadiran-style geometric etchings covering every inch of its surface. The paving stones are uniformly octagonal and speckled in shades of green, red, and grey. The gates are 17 feet high, clearly fashioned by a gifted master of metalwork; had they color other than the black iron, one could easily mistake them for intertwined vines and sprightly fey creatures flitting through their foliage.

The gates are wide open, and before them sits an elderly gentleman ensconced in a padded chair, bearing an expectant expression.

Aeris approaches the elderly man at the gates warily, his eyes and ears scanning their surroundings as they get closer. When they are twenty feet or so away, Aeris speaks up, ”Good evening, sir. Is this Ghenett Manor? I’ve heard of it, but never thought to see it. Is it possible to take a stroll on the grounds on this lovely evening?”

Ouroboreia simply nods sheepishly. "Thank you for your time, Venture-Captain."

Later on, as the barge slowly makes her way towards the manor, Ouroboreia remains mostly secluded in her room. One the rare occasions when she comes out, she can be heard whispering - to herself? - in a weird way.

Once the Pathfinders have arrived, she simply agrees to the caretaker's offer, though she will eventually leave her teacup alone, not drinking out of suspicion.

Cue vast amounts of box text. I'll use stepping because there's a lot here; feel free to respond/act at each of the four points indicated, or just some of them, or just at the last one.

[1] "Very good! Right this way." Po leads the way through the gate with a surprisingly spry step for so aged a man. "Please stay off the grass--the guard dogs are quite vicious."

The paving stones continue past the gate, leading up to the villa’s great double doors, leading to a paved turnaround for carriages and the like. To the west lies a decorative pond filled with crystal clear and no more than four feet deep at any point. About three dozen fanciful fish float on the surface, their formerly colorful scales ragged. Two arrows stick in the ground on the southeastern edge of the pond and the black-feathered shafts of four other such missiles can be seen protruding above the surface of the pond. The ground at the edge of the pond is soaked with moisture. No other traces remain of what appears to have been some strange act of vandalism.

If you Investigate the Pond, DC 15 Kn Nature:
The fish carcasses appear to have been baked, somehow... These fish are known as mankea, often bred by the idle rich of Taldor and monstrously expensive.

[2] The villa itself is made of imported stone of a dusty rose hue, with rows of artful etchings on its surface, alternating every foot with rows of deeper carvings of wonderfully complex pastoral scenes from a variety of cultures. Most of the structure is about 20 feet tall, though sections of the northern portion of the villa rise only 10 feet. Several arched windows filled with delicate metallic grills, their sills 10 feet off the ground, cover the east and west walls. The manor's front doors are made of thick teak and intricately carved with religious scenes. A pair of fat, gold rings hangs suspended from the mouths of djinn-like heads firmly affixed to each portal--extraordinarily expensive door knockers.

DC 15 Kn Religion:
The scenes on the door depict principles from the Prophecies of Kalistrade.

[3] Gently pushing open the front door, Po leads you to another strange scene. This opulent entry hall was once a proudly appointed place, with detailed and realistic murals of a marketplace on the walls, carved mahogany benches, ancient statues of red stone--each bearing distinctly Tian features--and a pair of huge fur rugs assembled from the pelts of unusual and exotic animals. Clear signs of violence now mar the room: four of the benches are overturned and one to the southwest is charred, a statue has been reduced to rubble, and both rugs are torn and ragged as if hacked at with knives. Po makes no comment about this and moves directly across the room to another door on the far side, inviting you further into the manor.

[4] In this next room, a rich green rug of Qadiran manufacture with dizzying geometric patterns filling its thick pile runs down the middle of this charming room. To the east and west are finely carved mahogany benches, before which sit exquisite tables hewn from the same wood. The stone walls are painted in subtly shifting shades of green, so that the color grows lighter the further up the surface it proceeds--clearly the work of an artisan of considerable talent. Inviting you each to take a seat on the benches, Po himself takes a chair and snaps his fingers. A sandy-haired woman of middle age enters from a side-door bearing a tray of tea, and stops before each of you with the tray. "Ah, thank you Domatilla. Please, enjoy the fine spiced tea. I bid you welcome to Ghenett Manor. I have been instructed by my employer to extend this courtesy--I assume that you represent the world-renowned Pathfinder organization? I would ask that you make an effort to respect the property," he states, casting a quick frown in the direction of the room to the east. "I will answer what questions I can."

[ 1 ] Knowledge (nature): 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (16) + 17 = 33
Could the "baking" be the result of a fireball spell or something akin to it?

When the Pathfinders are walking along the pond, Ouroboreia discreetly points at the fish, and whispers to her companions, explaining: "These dead fish have been baked - quite strange indeed. These fish are known as mankea, often bred by the idle rich of Taldor and monstrously expensive."

[ 2 ] Knowledge (religion): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
The void wizardess studies the religious scenes with great interest, taking several notes about it in her journal. However, she proves unable to interpret the scenes displayed.

[ 3 ] This manor is filled with traps... we must be incredibly careful in our investigation.

[ 4 ] Ouroboreia sits down as instructed, but leaves the cup in front of her, not bringing it to her lips. She seems rather uneasy at the perspective of the reason for their presence being so obvious, plainly exposed in the open. "We are indeed, as this symbol proves." The ebony-skinned Varisian displays her wayfinder. "I assume your master is not here at the moment, is he? You can be reassured, we will respect your master's rules and leave the place as clean as possible when we are done here. What can you tell us about this place, its history?" she asks out of sheer curiosity.

Aeris listens to the caretaker's mild explanations of this place, which is clearly designed to do great harm to people, his distaste for the situation mounting. "It seems we have heard all we're going to hear from our host. I say we set to work."

Moving to the double doors at the far end of the room, he looks over his shoulder and raises one eyebrow, as if to ask, Ready, Pathfinders?

He gives the door a thoughtful inspection and listens closely at it, then says, "I prefer to fight from a bit of a distance, perhaps Sarion could lead the way?"

Yes--I've been editing the dialogue to change that and missed that instance. With me, north will ALWAYS be at the top to reduce confusion. So that should have said "room to the south." Thanks for asking!

During the boat ride, the armored man introduces himself as Sarion Minos. When he has leisure to remove his helmet, you see that the horns on his helmet are in fact his own, and his visage the same as that depicted on his visor - definitely demonic in appearance, with green eyes, scaly skin and bestial features. He makes it clear by his speech that he is a Paladin of Sarenrae. "I pledge that I will defend my allies. We stand together!"

Neither Po nor Domatilla detect as evil and both detect as healthy.

Had You Drunk the Tea:
Absurdly high DC 33 Fort save or fall unconscious for 30 minutes, during which time Po surreptitiously removes and locks up a random item of medium importance found on your person, to make this more challenging. Congrats on avoiding that! :)

Sarion opens the double doors to the south and leads the party into an elaborate banquet hall. Po gathers up his lawn chair and heads back to the front gate, while Domatilla cleans up the tea and shuts the doors behind you.

The ceiling of this grand hall soars twenty feet overhead. An enormous, fifty-foot-long banquet table surrounded by twenty-eight beautifully carved, high-backed chairs dominates the room. Eight full suits of ornate plate armor line the north and south walls, each holding an elaborate if unwieldy halberd. Intricately grilled windows high up on the east and west walls allow ambient light from outside to permeate the large chamber. Two enormous oil paintings in fanciful gilded frames flank the double doors on the west wall, their subjects presiding regally over the hall. On the right is an obese man in voluminous white robes and gloves, with a long black beard of oiled ringlets, and the fingers of both hands bedecked with gems--the quintessential portrait of a Druman Kalistocrat. The portrait on the left depicts a beautiful olive-skinned woman with large dark eyes and raven hair, also clad in white robes and gloves; her hair is held in place by a jeweled circlet, and a veil of coins covers her lower face.

Seated in every fourth chair is an undoubtedly strange figure. At first glance, each appears to be a human dressed in expensive black formal-wear, but a double-take glance points out that each has a grotesque, fish-like head.

When the doors are closed behind you, all seven rise as one and approach, standing menacingly and threateningly before you.

Any knowledge checks allowable here, or is this straight off the strange category?

Also, was there a bit of time to cast buff spells before moving in? I might have one but others may have some also.

I'll take Kn Nature. There was an opportunity before the door if you want to use it. We're also not (currently) in combat, so you can do it now too.

Narvik casts False Life: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12 on himself, gaining that many temp HP for five hours. He does not have that knowledge. He will cast Detect Magic, however.

Ouroboreia | Female Human (Varisian) Wizard 5 Magaambyan Arcanist 5 | HP 67/67 | AC:16 T:12 FF:14 CMD: 14 | F+10 R+10 W+12 (+3 vs. Spells, Spell-like abilities, +1 Death)| Initiative +3 | Perception +14 |

Before entering the room, Ouroboreia casts raiment of command, darkvision, see invisibility on herself, feather step on Sarion. She also uses her wands to cast mage armor and heightened awareness. Please note that in the event of a fight, she'll dismiss heightened awareness to grant herself a +4 bonus to her initiative check.

Sarion: you basically ignore difficult terrain for 70 minutes, and can even take 5-ft steps in difficult terrain.

Knowledge (nature), heightened awareness: 1d20 + 17 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 17 + 2 = 20

Waiting on the feedback to decide how Ouro will react.

Liberty's Edge

No buffs here, will cast them in combat.

Aeris looks in surprise at the fish-headed figures, never having seen such things before. He gives a quick glance at Ouroboreia, hoping she knows what they are, and can perhaps smooth the waters for them.

@ Ouroboreia: noted. If I forget, please remind me.

Ouroboreia thinks that these are locathah, dressed in human robes for some reason. Locathah are generally social and friendly creatures--if seclusive--and highly value community, which makes their current combative behavior... unusual.

Anything on the Detect Magic?

Apologies, missed your edit.

All seven of the imposing forms detect as magical.

Aeris looks over his shoulder at Ouroboreia and gives a very slight tip of his head toward the locathah, as if to say, Say something nice, maybe we avoid a fight?

I detect the presence of magic from these creatures. Is that normal for their kind? Narvik wonders if the creatures are under some sort of enchantment spell. If we must use violence, perhaps we should take care not to kill the creatures as they may not be acting of their own free will.

Narvik tries to determine what the magic might be.

GM:
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Narvik:
Six of the auras detect as being of the illusion school, but Narvik doesn't think the figures are illusory. The seventh aura detects as enchantment, necromancy (evil), and transmutation simultaneously.

After further study, Narvik says, Six of these aruas are illusion but I do not believe the creatures are illusory. The seventh aura... I sense enchantment, transmutation and evil necromancy all at once. Narvik will indicate which one is the "seventh aura".

Narvik tries to see past the illusion, thinking that these are not fishheads after all.
