Rat Sass:
"Really?! Wow! Thanks! Any idea how much something like this would go for?"

He pauses and waits for the answer. Whether it comes or not, he ventures on.

"Hey, uh," says Mortimer, unable to hold his curiosity in any longer. "I like what you've -- uh -- done with the place down here... nice --," he stumbles a bit, looking for the right words, "mood lighting... Are you expecting company? Entertaining someone for dinner?" He looks around, as if he's expecting to find food and libations just laying around.

I don't know if we can trust him... but Ascaria does seem to have a way with words, so maybe he can pull this off...

"Boy, I don't know... Seems to me that if we share a story, then we should get a discount, having entertained you for however short a time. Doesn't it? It's quite a story - I'm not even sure you'll believe it really. But if you'll knock 20% off the top, I think I'd be happy to include you in our little ruse... Of course that makes you a co-conspirator, too! So do you want to be in the inner circle - or what?!"

Benazel smiles as the gnome goes into a spirited negotiation. He waves his hand towards Ascaria as he mentions conspiracy. "Oh my, no, we needn't discuss things that entail probability of prosecution, no, no. The vial here is solely the essence of invisibility, not its bigger brother sphere. Give me a week, and I can easily secure 'big brother'. Would you like me to do so?" He begins wrapping the vial in a new cloth, preparing to seal the deal.

Pillette:

Nothing ulterior seems to be evident in your observation of Benazel's motive. He seems to act as a man would at a distant post, asking of news in the more cosmopolitan places of the world.

He is a very orderly man, by all appearances. The shelves are full, but not cluttered. He seems to be able to reach for many things within arm's reach of his place behind the counter.

Tynan:

Benazel is a bit of a recluse, keeping to his tower for most days of the week, so word on him is scarce.

He is a very orderly man, by all appearances. The shelves are full, but not cluttered. He seems to be able to reach for many things within arm's reach of his place behind the counter.

He seems to have the full contingent of alchemical wares in stock. Well, at least all the mundane items. The counter is quite large, and he did reach under it to produce the vial up for purchase.

Aesur tilts his head while looking at you. "Local workmanship would probably miss more than hit with the crafting, truth be told. Be worth more in the Capital City, especially with alchemists working side-by-side with the smiths. If you're fixing to sell some of these spheres, I'd ask for a gold piece each. Don't sell them to scoffers."

Mortimer wrote:

Aesur begins to wait for you to leave, looking at you without answering.

Ascaria smiles broadly and accepts the man's deal. "Agreed then. It's 300gp is it?"

Ascaria counts out 300gp from his pouch and hands it over to Benazel happily.

"I don't know about the greater potion. I certainly think we might want one, but I don't have the cash to cover it now so let's wait on that shall we? Thanks Benazel!"

Reluctant to just leave Aesur as he found him, Mortimer awkwardly tries to draw out the reclusive Aesur. Without giving it thought, he enters further into the room glancing at the locked door, then sits on the chair Aesur is facing and tries to connect.

"No, really Aesur -- you're always here by yourself. Why is that? What do you say -- in exchange for the information you just gave me, we go out for a bite to eat and maybe a drink or two on me? Maybe we can even pick up some girls! How does that sound?"

"Oh, this is a nice store," Sol remarks. Sol takes some time to examine the wares and things of interest, not touching anything, but thinking about what she might buy if she had needs.

"Ascaria, is it time for dinner yet?" Sol asks when she is finished browsing.

Benazel's office is purposed for all common alchemical items, easily in view, most everything well-stocked. He has a backroom, as well as a large counter, which houses out-of-view items which are brought out on request.

He's wonderfully accommodating on all alchemical purchases, not a mark up in sight. Feel free to make purchases at normal market value, unless you're looking for something more... unusual.

Aesur frowns. "I... prefer it, to have my quiet." You are easily able to tell that he does not prefer it, but something cows him. Perhaps his sudden fits of violence are to blame.

Ascaria's stomach gurgles, "Oh yes, it's time. I wonder where Mort went off too? Let's head to the Gar and see if he's already there waiting for us!"

Ascaria heads to the Gar, looking for food - and a decision on the party's next steps.

As I see it our best plan is to have someone, likely Tynan, setup a distraction, maybe with the alchemy fire and thunderstones Ascaria just bought. During the distraction, the party slips in and the perpetrator joins after using the potion of invisibility to sneak past the now more alert guards.

Mort tries to hide a frown, and attempts to assuage the fear that he thinks might be the cause of Aesur's reluctance to leave the Smithy.

"Aw, c'mon -- don't leave me hanging -- I owe you!" he says jovially. "Let's go to the ' Gar -- Berta, Pillette, Raella and Sol -- the ladies will be there." As an aside, he adds "You'll like Berta -- her eyes are quite kind."

He stands, offering his hand as leverage for Aesur to use in prying himself off of his bench.

"So what say you? It's a nice quiet place. I won't let anything untoward happen to anyone, I promise. If it's not to your taste, we can head out to whatever else is more to your fancy."

Mortimer:

Perhaps it's your tone, or your nagging. Hard to say. Aesur shakes his head, and waves you off, for all your talking. "You find that enjoyable, Mort, not me. Be off with you already." He crosses his arms, and deepens his frown.

His starting attitude towards you has changed from 'indifferent' to 'unfriendly'.

Further beseeching yields nothing. Aesur remains in the basement of Osgood's, and declines your invitation.

...

The Hungry Gar is hopping for a Starday evening. The evening breeze, although cool, is not off-putting for its temperature. Berta doesn't see the need for braziers, at least. Its smell is another thing, as the winds carry sulfurous tinges of the Lake's evaporative aromas.

Several of the Gar's patrons are enjoying themselves to the communal roasted pig turning on the spit at the back, while others are refilling bowls with leek soup and crusted bread.

As noisy as it is, Berta's made sure to find you a corner table, so your conversation doesn't require raising your voice overly so.

Feel free to further flesh out the plan for tonight's infiltration of the Dourstone Mine. Ascaria's plan- a lone wolf drawing the attention of roughly 6 guards to allow the majority of the group to gain entrance, then catching up with the others through the use of an invisibility potion is what I have thus far.

Didn't think so. I tried.

"Don't knock it until you've tried it."
"Have it your way."

Saying any of those things aloud at this point will just likely set him off...

"Ok, Aesur. As you were. Talk to you later."

Mortimer takes one last glance at the locked backroom door before heading up the stairs.

He waits puttering around the Smithy quietly waiting to see if the mutterings start up again. If they do, he'll attempt to see if he can understand any content. He waits no more than 10 minutes (given the already lateness of the hour and his nagging stomach) before heading to the 'Gar.

Your attempt at quiet skulking seems to succeed. For several minutes, not a peep from the basement can be heard. Then, Aesur's voice echoes forth, barely above a whisper, and made difficult for the floor that separates the two of you. She orders food, both for her and Rae, happy to enjoin in a nice meal.

"Oohhh...I can't wait for tonight. I do like sneaking and being tricksy," Sol says, recounting the time she put a bit of itching dust in Rae's breastery.

"I hadn't giggled so much in a long time. Of course, Rae was less than happy about it. I haven't played too many tricks since then, have I, Raella? That was long ago...when Da' was still around."

I can't... provoke him now. I miss too much. -- I should tell the others...?
Mortimer sighs.
What's happening to you Aesur? Who or What are you talking to? What else is in the backroom?
He quietly and somberly leaves for the Hungry Gar.

The sulfurous tinges of the Lake's evaporative aromas do absolutely nothing to improve his darkened mood as Mortimer makes his way from the Smithy toward the Hungry Gar.

Aesur's haunted by something. He must be. I was hoping, but he almost never leaves the Smithy. What else is in that locked backroom where he sleeps?
Does Manlin know? I know he has keys...

Sure, he's so good at metallurgy. Is that the only reason Manlin keeps him around? His temper is so uneven -- violent. Like he's possessed.

Or bought. Fought over?

Then there's this cult... Is it related? Are they a part of it? I work there -- what might they think of me then? Am I overreacting? What do I do?

As he enters the Hungry Gar, Mortimer's black mood is exasperated by the extra bustling activity. His mood is slightly dampened, however, upon discovering everyone else in The Party in a quiet back corner.

He quietly takes a seat. "Sorry everyone, to keep you waiting," he announces, promptly falling silent, lost in thought.

Male Human Slayer 11

Tynan enjoys a helping of the roast pork, and a cup of the leek soup, reveling in a hot meal before the coming night's activities. He looks over Ascaria's map, and makes a plan.

"I think it will be best if I try to create the diversion on the right side of the mining camp, nearer the watch tower. That will draw their attention away from the left side, leaving you all an open path to the mine entrance." Tynan turns to Ascaria. "How long will the potion make me invisible? That will be important for me to know."

Male, Gnome

Actually, for the record, I think it's Pillette's plan - I can't take credit for it.

"Heyya Mort!" Ascaria chirps happily.

He turns to Tynan, "It should last for three minutes, so you'll need to move fast." He hands him an alchemy fire and two thunderstones.

He goes over the plan one more time for the fully assembled group. Sounds like we have an imperfect, but supportable plan.

"...so, should we go tonight? Or do we want to watch the place and go tomorrow night? I'm ready now, and a little eager, but I could be a little fresher. It's already been a long day what with getting rousted in the wee hours of morning."

He looks at Mort, "...and we might want to wait for the stuff Allustan has, but that would mean waiting two days. Might be able to sell some stuff and buy other stuff but we're probably OK for now."

I have all my spells and better than half of my channels. So I'm ready enough I think. My vote is to go now as Ascaria is feeling anxious, but he will go with the majority.

Solrisa smiles when Mort appears, kicking out a chair for him to sit and trying to call over a server so the big man might be fed.

When Mort is sitting quietly, but seeming contented, Sol moves forward to look at Ascaria's map. Her elbows sit on the table and she straddles her chin between interwoven fingers as she looks down.

Ascaria wrote:
"...so, should we go tonight?"

Sol brightens, eager again to get going, but also willing to hear what others want to do.

"I could do it this night or wait for tomorrow," Sol says helpfully. "The sooner we finish rooting out this cult, the sooner the city will be safe and I can get back to my sculpting. I have some new ideas for pieces I want to create! Have I told you yet about the privy set? Wouldn't that be great? The pieces are all the usual pieces, but on different privies, or behind trees...you know...pooping!" Sol remarks with a devious, if awkward, smile. "Someone might like that, right?"

Male Human Brawler (17), Thief (0)

Sol's mention of the "(New!) Privy Set ®" elicits no reaction from the brooding Mortimer. The server summoned by Sol to bring him food is waved away with a hand and a head shake.

His smithing skills, amazing. His forge is inhumanly hot. It's as if it has a direct link to the Hells. Nah. I'm just exaggerating, right? How do I begin to tell them what I am thinking? I can do what he can do as well as he can, right?

Mortimer somehow loses track of where things are as he returns his elbow to the table, and he inadvertently flings some flatware to the floor.

No, I can't.

From Egorian. It's crazy, isn't it? I can't imagine he'd voluntarily join a cult. He seemed to really want to join us for a minute there... Where did I go wrong?

He turns to stare at the fallen flatware for a few seconds, then turns back to the table.

That whole bench thing -- his posture -- and the chair. Mort tries to remember. Was it even warm? If someone I didn't see was down there with him, is that where they might have been engaging him? Why couldn't I see what it was?

The night time bellowing. Forced into a cult somehow? I can't think of anything else that might explain any of this. Maybe Pillette can get past the door, and I don't have to try to 'borrow' the keys from Manlin?

He stares blankly at the map and absently begins pulling on his forelock.

Would it be fair either Manlin or Pillette if I were to ask Pillette? Would my new friends even be interested? Aesur can be so unstable. Possibly everyone but Pillette and Ascaria might just ... set him off. I have to protect them too.

Sol eats in silence, mortified that her attempts at conversation have stalled so badly. She looks at the pensive Mort, then at the quiet Ascaria, then her angry sister, and finally at Tynan, seeking a look of recognition or thought that she was there from any of the party.

"What? No one likes talking about poop over food?" Sol mutters. "I guess this will be quiet time. Rae likes quiet time. So did Mum."

Shrugging her shoulders, Sol also eats in peace.

Sol finishes up and goes to the mine. She's going to do her plan or Ascaria's tonight, no matter what the others won't say.

"Obviously it would be nicer to get in undetected, but that might be hard for all of the whole group. Tynan and I are quiet and one of us maybe able to sneak past, especially with the special potion."

"If the guards are smart, they won't send out all six to investigate a disturbance. If they aren't all drawn away, we may need to be prepared to take out the remaining ones, hopefully prevent anyone from sending an alarm message below." I wonder if everyone has the stomach to do what must be done to some possibly innocent guards.

Mortimer pops out of his dark reverie like a cork. "Huh?"

What if we just found a cult member?

As he listens to the others, Mortimer lets his hand slip from his forelock. He grabs a piece of bread and bites into it, slowly chewing. He then holds it up and rotates it for inspection, frowning at it slightly as he chews -- as if he's trying to determine whether or not it's actually food.

He puts it back down on the table in front of him in apparent disinterest, and tries to focus on the map.

"Ideally."
"Sss-sooooooo... You Tynan, will be over here?" he asks, pointing southeast of the watch tower (if the mine is to the North on the map).
"And the rest of us -- we'll be somewhere over here?" he asks, pointing to the north and west of the mine. "This is our clear path?" he asks, indicating some trail from the north and west of the mine leading to the mine.

"If they are all distracted, how long do you think they all will be distracted? Do you have enough toys to distract them with? How -- how do we get close enough before the distraction to get in without being seen before the distraction goes off? How long and where do we wait inside the mine for you to join us?"

He looks at Ascaria. "Maybe you can draw what you remember of the mine entrance inside -- so we know where to go to meet?"

"Hey, if you had a friend who talks to invisible entities, what would you do -- especially if he's somewhat volatile and reclusive to begin with?"
One at a time he looks at each of the party members for a few seconds as though he were searching their faces for something, then shakes his head.

Distracted, he finally ends with "Three minutes or no, we should have a code word, or signal of some kind, in case you get caught Tynan -- so we can help you."

Pillette wrote:
"[...] but if it doesn't draw all six, those not causing the distraction need to be ready to overtake whatever guards are left."

Suddenly alarmed, Mortimer shouts, "Wait - wait -- we don't have to --" he lowers his voice " -- we don't have to seriously harm anyone, do we? Should we get something to make them all fall asleep?"

Male, Gnome

Ascaria nods sagely at Pillette and nods faster as Mort exclaims his concerns, "No, no, no, we'll not hurt anyone badly. I'll see to that if I have to. Just subdue them - knock them out. We'll slip by then and into the mines."

"So when we enter the mines, turn left, then right, then the second left. Bear sort of straight-ish for a while and you'll see an odd passage to your left again. That's where we're headed. But don't worry, I'll be there to guide us, I know these mines, it'll be no problem."

Ahh, Mort. Sometimes the tougher they are on the outside, the softer they are inside? This strong one would not have done well in the cut-throat world of the capital. At least not without some... wise guidance.

"I'm afraid I don't know of any wizards to enchant them to sleep, and don't have fey poppies to do the job for us." That's what they say in the fairy tales, right? As the dinner party exits the Hungry Gar, Berta calls out and waves, respectful to acknowledge her patrons. Gaining the Square, the group fragments as the traffic of the evening crowds reaches its peak. Several couples enter the Church, while a gaggle of miners find their way through the Emporium's front doors. Lazare's lights are in full bloom, while a couple of deputies loiter in front of the Sheriff's Office.

Across the Square, the Feral Dog is trumping all with its noise levels. Smattering of hoots, mixed with gut-busting laughter in regular intervals, seems to indicate the current mid-level of debauchery. Perched on the stoop, tinted glasses concealing his eyes, Rastophan looks out over the square, like one of those portraits painted to look as if it continually looked down upon you, the viewer.

As you cross the Square, a couple of you are tugged upon by painted ladies encouraging your patronage of the Emporium's redder district, while others of you are begged for spare coin by older men, no longer fit for mine work, from age and injury.

The bustle of Diamond Lake thins out quickly as you head out towards Dourstone Mine. Heading mainly north, through the residential lanes, you eventually round the Governor's Hill, to gain the fences of the Mine's property.

There appears to be one dwarf in the tower. By his positioning, it appears that he's looking down over the main buildings.

The two main buildings, both single story, are internally lit, their windows casting yellowish light onto the sides of the building as well as the central road leading up to the mine entrance.

Waiting for a small while gives you a little insight into the patrolling pair of dwarves, who wander into sight as they proceed up to Company Road, looking up and down the road for a spell, then returning back up the road towards the mine entrance. Even from here, you can hear them in conversation, if only for their voices. You are unable to make out their current topic. You are, from this distance, unable to see the mine entrance itself.

The main fence is roughly six feet tall, wood slats well-enough aligned, though occasional gaps in the fence that allow for sighting through the fence.

Roll20 updated. You are further out than depicted. I look forward to your approach.

Ascaria walks casually past the gate, preferably on the other side of the street, and then circles back to the fence on the left side where he waits for Tynan. He tries to look casual, and resists drawing on the gate while he waits...

Tynan waits patiently for just the right moment to sneak into the fenced area. With his medium grey hooded cloak pulled up, he listens intently for the patrolling guards' voices to be away from the gate, and also watches for the patchy clouds to slip in front of the moon, deepening the shadows a bit. Once the moment is right, he slips around the fence, and presses himself into the shadows of the fence.

If unnoticed by the watchtower guard, Tynan slowly edges along the fence to the right side of the entrance until he is past the tower.

I hope they're ready to move...

Tynan uses the slats of the wooden fence to observe the pair of dwarves serving as a patrol up and down the road. As he slips through the open gate, the property remains in silence.

Tynan:

You sense that your way along the fence is going unnoticed, as far as you can tell. The tower dwarf is not raising the alarm just yet.

Anyone else deciding to act, keep it to single round actions only.

Male Human Slayer 11

Tynan inches along the fence, keeping an eye on the tower guard. The clouds seem to be on his side, as he reaches not one, but two of his shadowy hiding spots. Double move

Tynan:

You're able to continue moving along the fence, as the tower dwarf remains quiet.

Assuming you'll continue for another round...

Stealth: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20

You are able to complete your movement to your final position. The property is still as quiet as when you entered.

From the tower, the guard dwarf bellows.

"HEY!! Don't go drinking all the whiskey, 'Stone-for-brains'!! You got one more hour, then I'm coming for you!! Bah..."

F Halfling Servant 3

Pillette will quietly follow Ascaria's lead, moving casually and quietly, and keeping away from the patrolling dwarves.

She will peer up at the watchtower, looking for any openings to those in the viewing platform, looking to see if there is any spot where she could aim a bottled, flashing bolt at the tower guards.

When the tower guard goes out of sight, Tynan makes a quick dash to the shadowy area beneath the tower.

Well, that's one who won't be able to see me...

Tynan quietly removes a flask of oil from his pack, reaching up and carefully pouring the contents on several of the rungs of the ladder that gives access to the tower, starting with the rung seven feet off the ground and working his way down.

That should give him a surprise if he tries to climb down quickly. Tynan gives a grin, and continues his work.

Pulling an alchemist fire from his pouch, Tynan hefts it carefully, and listens for the patrolling guards to start making their way out of the mine entrance. When he hears them starting to return, he hurls it toward the west side, behind the southern office building.

"OYE!! FIRE!! YOU SAD SACKS-A-ROCKS..." The watchtower dwarf begins to bellow at his fellow guards.

Tynan:

Directly above your head, you can hear the sentinel shuffling his feet, stomping occasionally. You can also hear him muttering...

"If they set my whiskey to burning..."

From your position, you can clearly enough see the two on foot patrol round the corner as the watchtower dwarf continues to complain from above.

You also see a single dwarf exiting the northern building, drawn to the excitement. All of them are focusing on the fire at hand. None of them have spotted you so far...

Not quite into initiative yet...

Male Human Slayer 11

Tynan watches the guards as they head toward the fire, and carefully removes another alchemical prize from his pouch, waiting for the right time to strike. His heart pounds in anticipation.

Patience. Only four so far... where are the rest of you? Come out to play.

Male, Gnome

Ascaria looks to the others, Was that the signal? Just one fire? Is there more coming? Should we wait?

Sol seems stuck in place for the moment, so he waits as well for the loud bang of a thunderstone... or more fire.

Rae watches the others, waiting for more of a signal. He'll need more than that to move those guards. You'd think they were made of stone with as hard as they are to get to move. She crouches quietly, waiting for the time to move.
