Omrax the Bold |
Omrax nods at Kaâb.
Strong work, Lady Kaâb. Can you tell if the scimitar was used in the attack?
Is it new or old, maybe we can tell if the blade was the one used against our shopkeep? Some blades have jagged edges.
We may be able to use some spell to find the owner.
Omrax turns at Arnthoth's discovery...
Clawed footprints? Another puzzle. Did the blade owner have a pet? Or was a beast here after.
It did not eat the remains, but the acid might have made it unpalatable. Can you tell where the tracks lead?
EndlessForms |
The blade looks fairly new with a nice keen edge. You could always try to find the maker too.
Omrax the Bold |
Omrax will look at the blade while the others search.
"This appears too large to be a scimitar. I suspect it is a falchion. Not a weapon Iomedae often promotes, but it is favored by many warriors for its sharp edges. Perhaps a local blade smith will recognize it."
EndlessForms |
It takes you several hours wandering the markets until someone points out to you a maker's mark on the hilt: the mark of the smith Lohakar.
Lohakar is a friendly smith and when you show him the blade he recognizes it as his own work. Luckily he keeps records of all his works and still has the bill of sale. He remembers selling the blade to Lankesh, a high-caste merchant, who also brought it back for sharpening recently.
Omrax the Bold |
Omrax will ask around for the merchant Lankesh.
diplomacy: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (11) + 16 = 27
"I have word the owner of this blade dwells in the commerce district. This way, if I recall correctly. Perhaps the blade was stolen from him. "
EndlessForms |
You head to the Commerce District and come to the home of Lankesh. A well-built Vudrani man with a beaklike nose, thick eyebrows, and a shaven head answer the door and invites you in. "Yes, I am Lankesh. What can I do for you? Come on in and sit in the living room. I have but little time though, I am terribly busy."
Omrax the Bold |
Assuming he speaks common.
Omrax will bow and enter the shop.
"Good sir, we have come to your shop to return some item of interest you may have lost recently. We would like to know how and when and under what circumstances this blade left your possesion."
Omrax will point out the blade (assuming either he has it or Kaab)
"You recognize this blade, correct? ."
we can add a diplomacy if needed.
EndlessForms |
Yes, he's speaking Common.
Lankesh snorts in annoyance. "Yes, that is my blade and I will have it back immediately or I will contact the authorities and have you arrested as thieves."
"If you have no further business except to return my possessions to me, I would have you leave. I am quite busy with business and have no time for matters unrelated to trade at the moment. Good day!"
J'ngo Mordrak |
Thieves? Mordrak says in shock. My good sir! We are not thieves by any means! We found this finely-crafted blade at the remnants of a crime scene. If it was stolen from you, that is yet another crime to add to the perpetrator's list of offensitudes! The Mwangi smooths his hair a moment as if thinking, then continues. Pray tell us, when did you last see this weapon before it went missing?
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Kaâb Al-Burda |
Yes, good sir, we mean no disrespect but we find this weapon alongside the rest of people killed ! You could be in great danger ! We need to be able to protect you from the assassins and evil cultist responsible for all these murders.
In Sarenrae's name please, help us ,you could be in grave danger !
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (13) + 23 = 36
EndlessForms |
"I have tried to be frank with you but you do not seem to be understanding me: I have other business to attend to and do not have time to speak with you about these unrelated matters. I must get back to work now, please show yourselves out."
With that he turns and goes off deeper into his house, disappearing from sight. A moment later several servants arrive to escort you off of his property.
Omrax the Bold |
Omrax will leave once the servants arrive.
Once outside, he will confide in the others.
"He certainly did not seem to appreciate us finding his missing blade as much as I would have expected."
Kaâb Al-Burda |
Is not a good man. Nor someone thankful for retrieving a good weapon.
Said an upset Kaâb.
Omrax the Bold |
"If he comes back out I will ask Iomedae if he has an evil aura. Otherwise we could set watch on his shop and see if he goes anywhere or has other visitors. Then again he may not be involved in this case but may have other matters he is hiding. What other leads do we have? The missing earing? ."
EndlessForms |
You already followed up on the missing earring; that's where you found the blade.
As you head away from the merchant's home an errand-girl who introduces herself as Shari approaches you and hands you a note. It reads (in Common):
The promise of death awaits you if you choose to keep interfering!
The girl says only that she was given the note by a merchant with a mustache. No, Lankesh did not have a mustache.
When you return to your quarters later that day to discuss what you have found so far (or the many missing pieces to the story), an arrow suddenly flies through the window and lands with a thud! in the doorframe; an expert shot. Although you do not catch who shot the arrow, the nearest building is over 180 feet away and the culprit is likely long gone (and also likely an expert sniper!).
Tied to the arrow with a bright silken thread is another small note that reads (in Common):
This is your final warning!
The handwriting is not the same as on the first note; this is a scratchy scrawl.
After the Appraise check:
Omrax the Bold |
Omrax tries to spot the shooter.
Perception : 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
"It seems we must be getting close to our culprits for them to have gone to such lengths to track us and shoot at us. I am no archer, but that is quite a shot."
EndlessForms |
Weary from your investigations and perhaps frustrated that you have not found a solid lead yet, you settle in for the night.
The next morning, you awake to find the burned-out corpse of the rumormonger Mahindra on your lodging’s front steps.
Omrax the Bold |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Heal : 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
"I think this person has been injured ."
Omrax the Bold |
"I think he moved when you poked him just then. So now I am not so certain."
Can we total our collective heal checks LOL
J'ngo Mordrak |
Totaling them still wouldn't hit a DC 15, LOL
Maybe he's only MOSTLY dead.
Kaâb Al-Burda |
@Arnthoth : yes, heal is untrained, so you can achieve past 10
Oh no ! said Kaâb
Do you know how ?
Arnthoth Koortuskson |
Arnthoth ponders for a moment. "Well, it’s fairly obvious that Mahindra died elsewhere, as there’s very little blood here." Prodding at the body with his hammers, he says. "While he has heavy bruising around the neck, a very accurate strike to the heart from a short stabbing blade was the cause of death. See the puncture wound, there?"
J'ngo Mordrak |
Mordrak's eyes widen as he looks at the body after Arnthoth points out the various wounds.
It is clearified to me that I am not a medic, he murmurs to himself.
Should we seek out a cleric for a speak with dead spell, maybe?
J'ngo Mordrak |
Kaâb would have to try UMD to use such a scroll, I think. Or we could see if a temple has an NPC cleric who could cast one for us.
Beyond that, maybe someone trained in Survival can find some tracks. Or maybe a dog? Brainstorming a bit here.
Kaâb Al-Burda |
Sarenrae have not given me the gift to speak with the dead, so I agree to go in a temple a ask a cleric here to help us on that. said Kaâb.
Omrax the Bold |
"Agreed. Let us try that route. Also, we should report this murder to the proper authorities. If nothing else, I will carry the remains to the temple to keep the street vermin from disturbing it further."
Omrax will pick up the body and bring it along. Thanking Iomedae he is immune to diseases.
Kaâb Al-Burda |
Before Omrax took the body, Kaâb prayed under Sarenrae's Light for Mahindra's soul rest.
Omrax the Bold |
Omrax will follow the others to the temple of Sarenrae.
"If they cannot help, then who can? Pharasma? ."
EndlessForms |
You find a temple where an elderly cleric agrees to cast the spell for you. You'll have to pay the normal spellcasting fees.
What do you want to ask?
Omrax the Bold |
Looks like 2-3 questions minimum 5th level caster for 3rd level spell
Omrax thinks for a bit about the wording of a question.
I would suggest something along the lines of
"Can you provide details of your alleged death, including
the location and a description of the assailant?"
What do the rest of you think?
EndlessForms |
"I was heading home and accosted from behind. I never saw my killer."
Anything else?
J'ngo Mordrak |
A shame you did not perceivitize your killer. Hmm. Mordrak thinks a bit on what they have found so far. What, if anything, did you know of the weaponmaker Lankesh? He has seemed unwilling to discussinate these matters with us and, though I may be suspecting him unfairly, I believe him to be involved somehow in all of this.
Omrax the Bold |
"We either need to watch our merchant Lankesh, or try to find some other leads. Was Lankesh a weapon maker? I thought a different type of merchant. Nevertheless, we could try to determine his clientele or suppliers. They might provide insight into the type of company he keeps."
gather info - diplomacy: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (11) + 16 = 27
EndlessForms |
Lankesh was the merchant who threw you out. Lohakar was the weaponmaker who told you he sold the sword to Lankesh.
"I known Lankesh only as a merchant."
Asking around, Lankesh seems to keep many clients, none of whom seem connected and nothing seems nefarious about his business. He is quite respected.
EndlessForms |
Later that day you return to your quarters to find a folded note slipped under the door.
Omrax the Bold |
Omrax ponders the next move after failing to find a connection with the merchant and his suppliers being cultists.
"We still have the strange arrow and the shooter. We could seek out the rooftop or whatever and see if additional clues are found. Or try a fletcher to find a buyer of rare arrows."
Without solid clues to follow, Omrax will return to the guest house with the others.
EndlessForms |
As soon as Mordrak touches the note, a fiery explosion hits everyone!
fire: 1d4 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
DC 16 Ref for half; just on Mordrak
fire: 6d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 2, 6, 3, 6) = 23
DC 14 Ref for half; hits everyone
fire: 6d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 5, 3, 5, 1) = 24
DC 14 Ref for half; hits everyone
Concealed inside you find two burnt up spheres.
Kaâb Al-Burda |
Ref DC14: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14
Kaâb barely dodge half of the fireball !
How evil is that ! It could have hurt some else !
