Holy, crap. Didn't I get a Nat 20 last time for this, too. Feel free to make that an Aid Another if needed. Also, I'm back in the field until the 10th or 11th, but I at least have some internet access, if extremely dang slow. :)
Kynrac |
Didn't the Captain at the base of the Sundered Path give us a letter of introduction? If so, Kynrac will present it.
"My companion speaks the truth, we wish to ally with your people."
Aid another on the Diplomacy check is automatic.

Voros |
Voros looks bored and waits till the others make their point.
Aren't we supposed to clean the place? Well, it doesn't matter, I guess, we're in a TAPESTRY!
Boswick Bumbleberry |
Captain, I am Boswick Bumbleberry, of the Pathfinder Society, and I am at your service. It is as my companions have spoken.
diplomacy aid another: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
G.M.E.W. |
The Captains takes the letter and examines it closely. Well then, it looks like you aren't trespassing at least. Your are the second group of foreigners to pass this way recently. A very unusual event for the Padoga, so we are all a bit on edge. Especially when both groups make dire warnings of the other. The Captain of the gate is a smart man and I respect him greatly. His decision on this matter is one I will follow as well. Did the guard captain at the top have you fight his Minotaur? He asks as he hands the letter back to you.
George Demonspawn |
George raises his eyebrow at the mention of a minotaur. Hmm... I wonder if they actually have one.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4
Kynrac |
"I'm afraid not. We fought many things on the Sundered Path - including a dragon - but no minotaur."
G.M.E.W. |
You may enter as friends of the Rats of Round Mountain, but
heed our warning. Not all within will honor this letter. The
guards beyond the Sundered Path have long been stationed
away from the rest of us within the pagoda, and they don’t
know of the growing division among our people. There is
dissension between those loyal to the Undying Empress and
those who wish to be free of her rule. We are among the latter,
but any within who disagree with us are likely to ignore this
letter and the message of peace that it represents. Best of
luck, Pathfinders.
Kynrac |
"I thank you, most honored Captain. Your loyalty will not be forgotten."
When leaving, Kynrac casts longstrider with his wand (UMD DC 20 check is an auto-success), it lasts for an hour.
Voros |
Ugh. At last!
"Alright, let's go, people.
Boswick Bumbleberry |
Boswick nods acceptance to the Captain. As we move on our way, Boswick considers the Captains words carefully. Then once out of ear shot of the ratfolk comments to his fellows.
The Captain spoke of division. I'm pretty sure he indicated that he was amongst the latter. Which means he is in the camp of those who would like to see the Empress replaced. If the Captain of the front gate is on the opposite side, we must tread very carefully.
Ignatious the Seeker of Flame |
"Hum, Sir Captain, can you tell us more about this division, as well as the Undying Princess? How is it that a princess does not die? Is it perhaps a curse of some sort, in which my healing light might be of assistance? And why do some of your people turn from her?"
"Also, I fear the other group of trespassers might indeed be the fiends we are trying to protect you from. Did any of them wear a small silver or bronze shield as a badge?"
G.M.E.W. |
The Empress has been ruler of the Pagoda since the sundering. She is powerful and protected our people in a time of great suffering. But we are not weak and fearful as we once were. We are a great people and the Empress is demanding and has a tight grip. We are grateful for the protection she gave, but do not want to live as slaves. That is all I will speak on the matter.
The others did wear badges and they said to beware of those who carry strange compasses and call themselves Pathfinders.
Ignatious the Seeker of Flame |
"I see. Hum. Perhaps we could speak to the Undying Princess, for slavery is forbidden. I wonder, does she know how you feel on this, friend?"
"As for the others, it is my hope we might prove ourselves as true allies before too much damage is done to either of us."
Didn't mean to hold everyone up, so we can head out. :)
Boswick Bumbleberry |
Boswick appreciates the additional insight discovered by Ignatious.
As we move to depart, I will cast Detect Evil on the Captain of the guard. Gut feeling is he is probably neutral, but you can't be to careful.
George Demonspawn |
George follows quietly as he knows that his actions can only harm this tense truce between the Society and the ratfolk.
Best to leave it to the chattier types like Ignatious.
G.M.E.W. |
The Captain does not detect as evil.
A ten-foot-diameter pillar fills the center of this square chamber, with the narrow steps of a spiral stair rising up its sides. Murals of the raising of the Pagoda of the Rat dominate the walls. Doors stand in the center of three of the four murals. In the scene on the northern wall, the pagoda stands nearly finished as a majestic ratfolk female—a giant among her kind—looks on approvingly, her hands folded behind her back in a regal pose. The area is filled with the bustle of hundreds of ratfolk in what looks to be a market. The cacophony of noise from the mass quickly dies and the entire chamber is plunged into an strange silence. The Ratfolk push against each other as those in he back move forward to see better and the ones in from move back in fear of the foreigners.
Ignatious the Seeker of Flame |
Unarmed and non-aggressive, speaking in Tien, "Good <afternoon> ken of the rat. We are travelers, members of an organization that studies and protects history. We come from Outside this world, and we mean you no harm. Please do not be fearful of us. We have been sent to help, if we are allowed to."
Boswick Bumbleberry |
Do we know where we are going?
If so,
Boswick leads the group in the direction of Empress.
If not,
Would someone be so kind as to lead us to Empress? We seek an audience with her. Boswick implores the crowd.
G.M.E.W. |
@ Bos,
Captain pointed up when talking about the Empress. The Stairs seem the easiest route to take.
@ Birgit,
Nope, it looks like just another rat folk to you. It is bigger that the ones depicted around it and there is something funny about its hands but that's it. Its does not look like the Rat god who's shrine you fought in on the path.
The ratfolk keep their distance as you approach the central pillar and the stairs leading up.
Boswick Bumbleberry |
Any thoughts on whether we should try a Diplomacy (Gather Knowledge) in here? The people are clearly avoiding us. Maybe we should make a rousing speech to win the people to our side (So a good diplomacy check), as they are either naturally frighten of strangers or have already heard the negative talk from the Aspis agents.
Voros |
I would say an inspiring speech would be the best.
Ignatious the Seeker of Flame |
Yah, I generally don't roll for things unless I'm specifically attempting it, rather than just RPing, or told its needed, and Diplomacy is one of those skills that some people can feel can direct the flow of the game too much, so I try to refrain from rolling it with every interaction unless asked or it seems obvious.

Sorry for missing yesterday
The Ratfolk seem to calm down a bit and starts to causiously approach when two doors on the far end of the room burst open and two groups of three armed ratfolk charge in.
FOOLS! Traitors to the Empress will be killed! calls (what you guess is) a female Ratfolk wielding a spear.
There are screams and chattering as the civilian ratfolk attempt to flee.
Difficult terrain and collateral damage with AoEs for now.

The Ratfolk Woman is with the group to the north, she has a spear and armor. She has a black and red tabard with a 6 legged rat on the front.
A White furred ratfolk is with the group the south, it does not seem to have any weapons or armor.
the other ratfolk are equipped similarly to the guards (crossbows and rapiers with chain shirts) but they wear the same sort of tabard as the woman.
Boswick Bumbleberry |
So quick question are both groups attacking us? or are they fighting each other and we are in the middle.

Birgit, I'm guessing your want to more into range.

Deeper Darkness or regular?
Ignatious the Seeker of Flame |
If you want to delay, I'll Nimbus of Light it again.
Deeper Darkness. Supernatural Darkness means not even darkvision works in it.
Please don't take this as me being rude or trying to overstep the DM. The Light vs Darkness rules are not perfectly clear, so it is always best to ask. There is honest room for interpretation (with the specific spells), and honestly, Paizo made the problem much worse. There really isn't a mechanical thing "Supernatural Darkness". Darkness, (the spell) allows for Darkvision, while Deeper Darkness specifies that it also blocks Darkvision. There are 4 categories for vision: Bright Light, Normal Light, Dim Light, and Darkness. The Darkness Spell cancls out all non-magical Light Sources, as well as any magical Light Sources of it's Spell Level or lower within the area. It also Drops the ambient Light level by one step, (so Bight Light becomes Normal Light, Dim Light becomes Darkness).
Deeper Darkness does the same thing, just a little bit better. It drops the ambient Light Level by 2 Steps, (so Bright Light becomes Dim Light, and everything else becomes Darkness), but also blocks Darkvision.
Kynrac |
Kynrac reaches out to alter the flux of space and time, bending it to his will.
Casting blessing of fervor on the party. Picking up the +2 AC/Ref/atk myself.
George Demonspawn |
I don't have to delay, you go before me.
Ignatious the Seeker of Flame |
Sorry, I meant in general. :)
On my turn, I'll use Nimbus of Light, (and also extra movement from BoF), moving about in small circle to try to catch as much darkness as possible.
G.M.E.W. |
@ Kynrac,
You can't see the party on your turn to target them. I'll assume you delay and cast when you can see.
@Ignatious,
You don't get the extra movement but as soon as you summon the nimbus it reaches the sorce of the deeper darkness spell and dismisses it, so you don't need to move.
The Guards delay since they can't see in the dark.
See stupid tactics
As the darkness falls there are murmurs of uncertainty from both sides. But then, just as quickly as the darkness came Ignatious summons the fire within himself to bring forth a blinding light, banishing the darkness.
Kynrac, springs to actions as soon as he can see his friends again granting them all a powerful blessing. The Guards and the white haired rat are the next to act.
The guards fire off their crossbows aiming at most human looking member of the party, the flat footed Paladin.
Starting from the top left and going across and down
Attack 1: 1d20 + 12 - 4 ⇒ (5) + 12 - 4 = 13
Damage 1: 1d6 + 2 + 2d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 2 + (6, 5) + (2) = 16
Attack 2: 1d20 + 12 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 12 - 4 = 24
Damage 2: 1d6 + 2 + 2d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 2 + (1, 4) + (3) = 11
Attack 3: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32
Damage 3: 1d6 + 2 + 2d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 2 + (5, 3) + (3) = 18
Attack 4: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23
Damage 4: 1d6 + 2 + 2d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 2 + (4, 2) + (4) = 17
Possible Crit:
Attack 3: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
Damage 3: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
The White haired rat chants a few arcane words and then lobs a small ball of fire which explodes engulfing he party as well as many fleeing ratfold.

Voros |
Ref save: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
Voros dodges most of the fire. taking (16/2)-5(DR fire)= 3 fire damage

Save yah!
As Boswick crosses the Pillar room, he incorrectly assumes the ratfolk are mostly peaceful, especially in this large a group. As the combatants enter the room he's caught flat-footed and a step too slow. Suddenly, he's peppered with crossbow bolts, 3 out of 4 land dealing a great deal of damage.
Dropped to 7 at this point.
Now full of holes, Boswick realizes things have suddenly grown dire. As sees the fireball coming toward him he dives to the side, able to avoid the full force of the attack. Nevertheless, he knows he'll still take some damage from the explosion. He quickly calls out to Iomedae in that moment.
Iomedae preserve my life, so I may serve you!
Half damage, drops me to -1. Cast Hero's Defiance as an immediate action.
Lay on Hands from HD: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 4, 6) = 14
Brushing himself off, he taps his armor. It begins to glow brightly. He draws his Wand of Cure Moderate Wounds and taps himself.
Swift action to add crusading to armor. Also choose +2 from BoF. Move to draw, and standard to use. AC up to 28.
Wand of CMW: 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (2, 5) + 3 = 10

Bos , if you use an immediate action the you lose your swift action.

doh...totally forgot about that. dang. No crusading on the armor yet. So AC is 25. Thanks Kynrac.

How much of the crowd is still around? Specifically those harmed by the fireball. I'd like to Channel to heal as many of them as possible, while also hitting Bos and our team.
