You are each in Eledar for your own reasons. Some of you have lived here longer than others. You may have even passed by each other on the street a time or two not knowing the future each of you would have with each other and the world.

The other similarity you all have is that you have recently received a dinner invitation from someone named Lavinia Vanderboren that reads, "Greetings, and I trust this missive finds you in good health! My name is Lavinia Vanderboren, and I humbly request your attendance at dinner at my estate on Festival Street and Blue Skink Lane tomorrow evening. I think I can present you with an opportunity uniquely suited to your skills. Please inform the carrier of this letter of your response to this invitation, and I hope to be speaking to you soon!"

One check for each of you for Knowledge (Nobility) and a 15 or higher opens both spoilers for you. It can be rolled untrained but will only reveal the DC 10 check no matter the result.

Knowledge (Nobility) DC 10:
The Vanderboren family is a wealthy and prestigious family of the city.

Knowledge (Nobility) DC 15:
Lavinia is the oldest daughter in the Vanderboren family. The Vanderboren family is led by Verik and Larissa, her parents, and she has a younger brother named Vanthus.

Knowledge (local) DC 15:
There was a tragic fire that happened about a month ago that claimed the lives of the elder Vanderborens. The
Vanderborens were survived by their two children, Lavinia and Vanthus.

Each of you arrive within minutes of each other. and are led into a sitting room

The Vanderboren Manor is located in the eastern section of the Merchant District. The seven-foot-high stone wall that surrounds the estate is impossible to miss, as is the towering, gothic, three-story house
that dominates the grounds within. Leering gargoyles and capering nymphs festoon the eaves of the manor's roof, and several trees give the manor grounds a nice buffer from the hustle of the city.

The front gates have been left open for you, but no one greets you until you reach the front door and knock. After a few moments, a wizened halfling woman answers the door. She introduces herself as Kora
Whistlegap. She thanks you for arriving on time and asks you to wait in the atrium, claiming Lady Vanderboren shall be with you shortly.

You all arrive within minutes and soon know that you have all been invited to the same dinner. Feel free to introduce your characters to each other!

Morgana walks forward, torn between the confusion as to why she may have been invited to so fine a location, and excited for the possibility of getting to experience a bit of finery... It's been far too long since I returned to the Clan and left behind the wines and cheeses and exotic fruit... I can't imagine that a fine, wealthy family would ignore the basic rules of hospitality...and serve something... provincial

She greets the halfling politely, then sighs as the small woman leaves, Not so much as a drink while I wait? Perhaps the House is falling upon harder times...

The name is a familiar one. One of the Eleder noble colonial families. Wealthy. A very intriguing patron or one to steal from later if things didn’t work out. Surprised to see the gate open and unattended, he waits outside in the shadows and studies the surroundings for a short time making sure no unwelcome surprises lurk without. I wonder how Lavinia is handling the tragedy.
The small figure with read hair and green eyes walked to the manor in a fine traveling cloak. Having left his betrothed at the inn on the waterfront, Julian walked confidently through the affluent neighborhood to the manor. His crew was enjoying a good bit of shore leave, and the captain was overcome by curiousity about the manner of his summons.

With his finely made harp in a case by his side, Julian was expecting to play his instrument at this occasion. His skill with the harp had become common knowledge, and often he was invited to many social occasions for his musical skills. Julian had already gotten his land legs from his prolonged voyage, but still walked with his finely crafted cane for protection.

Arriving in the anteroom and meeting the hobbit servant, Julian smiled and handed the hobbit his coat with a smile. As the coat was removed, the goblinoid features in the face become more noticeable. What is remarkable is the skin tone is totally that of a human with a dull sheen.

Noting the familiar grippli already there, Julian smile and gave him a warm handshake. "I see we meet again, Quartle. Since you are here, I assume we will not be performing music for the lady. Are your mechanical skills in practice? If I remember correctly, your touch with the tumblers was quite amazing."

As they have time to wait, Julian takes out his harp and plays an impromptu tune, using his hands to make a beat on the harp as his fingers expertly pluck the strings.

Julian's arrival interrupts his internal debate. "Julian! Gods, I had no idea I would ever see you again." He winks and grips Julian's arm tightly leaning close, "My skills are still quite sharp and a few new ones as well. Perhaps a chance to exercise them as well soon enough."

He casts a meaningful glance around the atrium as Celentria arrives. Once the ifrit has introduced herself he sweeps into another graceful bow. "Goodness Julian, we are graced with the presence of most lovely ladies this evening aren't we? A fascinating evening I am sure. I cannot wait to see who else will arrive."

Julian takes of his felt cap with the feather and bows to the ladies.
"Captain Binetti of the Lady of Fortune at your service."

He smiles at the red head. "Two gingers in the same room. I hope it is a good omen!!"

Julian looks around impatiently. "I would like to meet our hostess. You have no idea what trouble my crew can get into without me."

N'Dateh stares at the ceiling of the cramped and crummy cell he's been thrown in the night before. He winces, pushing back the voices in his head. They're telling him about honour, about greatness, about the need to fight!

From a crack in the ceiling, a tiny lizard crawls out and makes his way across the ceiling, to exit from another crack.

I got to get out...

Yes! Mighty battles await you! fight your way out of this cell! Show them the true might of the right faith!

Shut up! I'm done with you!

It is noon now, the cell grows impossibly warm. N'Dateh's cold blood soaks in that warmth and it calms him down a bit, and he finally gets up. He gets to the bars locking him inside and shouts: "All right! I'll pay the dumgned fine!"

An hour later, he's back on the street, looking wretched with what stands for a black eye among lizardfolks, though it's glowing orange, and a reeking aura of booze and defeat that allows him fortunately to make his way easily through the crowd.

You used to be a captain! A CAPTAIN! A mighty and honourable warrior! They can't look at you like that! They're disrespectful!

I used to be a lier, a traitor, and a murderer...

When he makes it to his door, a man is there. He's obviously been waiting for a long time; N'Dateh can smell anger and sweat on the man. He takes the message from him, reads it, and flatly says: "All right. I'll go."

The man gone, he creeps up painfully to the tiny room with a tiny bed and a tiny window.

First I sleep...

He only sleeps a little, then makes it to the public baths and washes himself, trimming the scales of his face to military perfection. He heads back home a new Lizardfolk, and unearth from a chest under his bed his old Sargavan military uniform, armour and weapon, fixing everything perfectly, straightening his back, and makes for the door.

Now we're talking! Mighty warrior, make us proud!

SHUT UP!!!

When he arrives at the gothic mansion, he swallows hard.

Do they know what a fraud I am..?

Still, he crosses the door, takes the offered food, and looks at the others assembled, and with a small bow, blurts a short: "A pleasure!"

And I thought she was the one who invited me...

"I've been called many things... I'll accept diverse." he replies a bit flatly.

"I have been invited by the Lady Vanderboren. Is she with us?"

N'Dateh wrote:

As soon as he finishes her sentence, you hear a group of people approaching. four figures emerge from the hall and are heading toward you. Kora races behind these figures, which include a jaunty male half-elf dressed in leather armor and armed with a half-dozen daggers of different shapes,a dark-skinned dwarf with a sour expression dressed in green and brown robes and clutching a large curved spear, an attractive but haughty-looking woman dressed in dark purple robes and with a tattoo of a crescent moon on one cheek, and lastly, a tall and handsome man dressed in polished breastplate carrying a bastard sword .

Knowledge (local) DC 15:
These are the Jade Ravens, a mercenary company that's been in the Vanderboren employ for several years. Their leader, the human is named Tolin Kientai.

The man in the breastplate stops and pauses for a moment and looks you over, "Hmmm. You must be the help Lavinia's bringing in to do the chores. Good luck to ya!" Not waiting for any responses he continues on his way at a brisk pace with the rest of the group and Kora following behind him.

Moments after they leave Kora comes back and tells you Lavinia is ready for you to head to the dining room. The private dining hall is comfortable and cozy, softly lit by wall-mounted lanterns. A window overlooks the manor's central courtyard and the carpet is thick and soft. A large portrait hangs on the wall, a fine work depicting a handsome young man with a short beard. Standing before the portrait is an attractive human woman wearing a long, flowing blue dress. She smiles as you enter, introducing herself as Lavinia Vanderboren.

She gestures you to sit and takes a chair at the head of the table. After you settle in she says, "As you may have heard, I recently inherited my parents' estate. Along with this fine house, unfortunately, came a fine amount of debt owed the Dawn Council, the harbormaster, and quite a few guildhalls. It seems my parents, for all their success as adventurers, were not as skilled at finance as one might expect. If I'm to get these taxes paid, I'll need to access my family's vault under Castle Teraknian."

"And that's the problem, you see. The vaults are magically locked-keyed to special signet rings. Both of my parents had these rings, at least, until recently. My mother lost hers a few months ago. She arranged for a replacement, but it won't be done for another month or so, too late for me. Which leaves my father's ring. He never wore it-he had a thing about men wearing jewelry. He kept it hidden somewhere on his ship, the Blue Nixie."

"The problem there is that the harbor master's seized the ship until someone pays for the last four months of mooring. I've paid the fines to the man the harbor master's put in charge of my ship, a brute named Soller Vark. Yet when I went to claim my ship, Vark's men wouldn't let me board, claiming that I hadn't yet paid the fines. I spoke to Vark again and he denied ever receiving my payment. My complaints to the harbormaster have fallen on deaf ears-he's a doddering old fool who trusts his man and won't relent."

"Vark and his men are up to something on my ship, I know it. What I need is to find out exactly what" they're up to. Unfortunately, Vark's not the type to react well to diplomacy or logic. I need someone who speaks his language... which is where you come in. If you can find out what he's using my ship for, or even better, recover the money I paid him, I'll pay each of you 200 gold in return once I've access to my vault."

And as she finishes her presentation, the first course is brought in and served.

Julian is no stranger to the worth and risk of missions, and, although he understands the tragedy the lady has been through, he speaks up with a calm, even tone.

"Lady Vanderboren, I commend you for the talent you have assembled to solve your problem. Unfortunately talent of this magnitude doesn't come without its price. Two hundred gold crowns to unravel this massive dockside conspiracy seems a little low. Especially considering all the payment comes on the back end."

Julian smiles and spreads his arms in an a wide gesture that appears friendly and open.
"How about we agree to splitting half of your recovered wealth from the family vaults? I may know a little of this Vark and I am no stranger to ships and docks. You can trust us to work better when granted a share of the outcome. We become partners!!"

Celentria raises an eyebrow at Julian for a second time. This one can be brash it would seem...

In her lilted desert accent she says, "I do not believe we should push the situation that far, friend Julian. Her families moneys are due to her... however you are correct that the two hundred gold seems meagre for our aid."

Turning to their host, the ifrit says, "You paid this man money and he betrayed you. That sum at least should be added to the two-hundred you promised, whether we recover it or not. As well as anything we do find beyond the signet ring of course."

Lavinia consider what Julian says at first until he says about splitting her family fortune in half her face darkens, however Celentria's words temper that a bit and she gathers herself, "I will go as high as 300gp for each of you, but I dare not commit myself any higher as I do not know the extent of what they stashed there. I have other employment offers in mind for you, but I don't want to get ahead of myself. To get into the vault I need that signet ring, and to get that ring I need you to reclaim the Blue Nixie for me, then I will know what my options will be. What else you find belonging to Vark and his men on the ship when you take it back for me is yours."

Julian smiles and nods: "Well 300gp plus expenses does sound better. You would cover costs, no?"

Rockford got $200 a day plus expenses.

"I believe the extra money should cover any extra expenses you may incur going down to the docks to take care of this matter."

"I approached the watch and the government with my complaints, but unfortunately had no proof of any wrongdoings. It was foolish to hand over the money to Vark without allied witnesses, but what's done is done. The city watch had promised to look into the matter, but I have learned that the investigation is taking a back seat to other more pressing matters."

"I'm hiring you because I feel that your presence alone might be enough to intimidate Vark into letting get that ring. Do your best not to throw the first punch if it comes to it, but in the end, why would Vark's men put up a fight unless they were up to no good ? Anyways, it's my ship, after all and I want it back!"

Morgana watches carefully and allows the others to speak, surprised to find herself nodding at Julian's statements, Maybe not an even split, but I would far prefer to be a partner than an errand-girl.... What does she think that I would just go beat up the ruffians that trouble her for a handful of coin? Even if it is the biggest handful I've seen in quite a while.... She shakes herself out of her thoughts and pays attention, then says, "I will say that your tale is certainly a sad one, and I'm sorry that you find yourself in this predicament.... especially that someone managed to take advantage of your naivete. That said, however, I'm not quite sure what in my reputation makes you think I'd be well-suited to persuading this... Vark, was it?.... to return your ship...."

She shrugs, then adds, "And while I find the idea of arguing over coin distasteful -- at least before desert and drinks -- I would make two small comments. The first is that, to operate in good faith, we'd need to know the size of your initial payment to Vark, if only to ensure that there's no misunderstanding about any coins that might be found aboard the vessel, and the second is that, from what I know of debt recovery, at least, there's usually a finder's fee.. a percentage of what's recovered.. to ensure that the monies aren't simply reported as being missing."

Aye, the priestess is a perceptive one.
Julian nods as she speaks.

"So your proposed payment is based on the assumption that Vark will fold. I find bullies tend to be more intransigent, and I predict we will have to resort to more direct measures. If that is the case, I think we may have to renegotiate. But, if your initial thoughts are correct, you will be only out the 1500gp for the five of us when Vark sees that Captain Binetti and an assortment of capable adventurers are arrayed against him."

The voice in his head seems to have a clear idea.

Julian's harp had three ranks of strings: 26 chromatic strings in the center, 24 treble string right, and 25 bass strings left. "I had paid Vark 100 platinum, I am not sure what he has done with it or if he still has it, but as I said, anything of value you find on the ship is yours, except for the ring."

Let me know if you have any more questions before we proceed.

No killing!? NO KILLING!?! What kind of glory is to be gained then. Walk away from her. She's not worth our time! argues the voice in N'Dateh's head.

To which he replies: You can leave if you want...

"Of course, there are ways of making a body disappear if it comes to that..." He sighs loudly. "Fine then. We'll do our best to keep him on his feet. More of a challenge that way."

Julian comments: "If he has redeeming qualities, we may leave him around. Leaving known enemies around is bad form."

Julian has no more questions, but decides as Lavinia has not heard him play, he will sing and play a more provocative song. He is attracted to her and felt it necessary to flirt with the attractive ladies to keep up his cavalier, buccaneer image. Early in his life he was used to playing for his supper, and old habits sometimes died hard. With a wink and a bow as he doffs his feathered hat: "I learned a song from those that sail in the cold winds of the north. They called it Seal Driver."

Quartle had heard the song before, as Julian liked to sing it whenever the salty spray was in his face in a full sail.

How I envision the song performed with a 37 perform roll

lyrics:

Take you away for my magic ship.
I have two hundred diesel horses thundering loud.
Sea birds call your name and the mountain's on fire
As the summer lightening cuts the sky like a hot wire.
And you ride on the swell and your heart is alive,
Think I'll make you my seal driver.

I'm no great looker, I'm no fast shakes.
I'll give you a steady push on a six knot simmering high tide.
I can hold us down keep our head to the wind,
Or let us roll on the broadside, cold spray flying in,
And we'll ride on the swell and our hearts are alive.
Let me make you my seal driver.

I could captain you if you'd crew for me
Follow white flecked spindrift float on a moonkissed sea.

Could you fancy me as a pirate bold,
Or a longship Viking warrior with the old gods on his side?
Well I'm an inshore man and I'm nobody's hero,
But I'll make you tight for a windy night and a dark ride.
Let me take you in hand and bring you alive.
Going to make you my seal driver.

After an amazing rendition of what Julian considers a much better selection than played earlier, he bows and thanks his hostess for a wonderful evening, making sure to kiss her hand on the way out.
"I have no further questions, we will return if we have anything to report."

"That was beautiful Julian. Quite moving! It reminded me of a lost love... Your fingers have plucked at my heart..." blurts N'Dateh, his cheeks puffed by timidity.

He stands, straightens his garb and his posture, then bows stiffly: "Lady, this was a wonderful dinner and we will retrieve what's yours in short time."

Asking around the next day you attempt to learn more about the situation but are constantly given the run around in bureaucracy and red tape. You are soon convinced that going through proper channels is not going to work.

According to Lavinia, the Blue Nixie was docked at pier five in the Merchant District the last time she saw it. This is a long pier the Merchant's Guildhall and the Smith's Guildhall. Alas, upon arrival it becomes apparent that the Blue Nixie is not docked at the pier at all, but is in fact moored to a float about 100 feet from the pier's end. From the pier you can tell there are at least a few men moving around the ship.

Does N'Dateh know if the waters here are dangerous?

The waters should be safe.

Celentria chuckles at the lizard man saying, "More likely we will need to rent a skiff to get out there."

"Yes, vendors travel to moored boats to sell things or even services. Maybe we try that. Say we are delivering some ladies to the boat? I can pass for a lady cloaked. That should do to get us aboard. Should bring some rum to be safe."

"I like your thinking Julian. I could probably scale right up the side of that ship, but that's a much better plan for getting everyone on board. Am I the pimp or want me to sneak on board separately to set up an ambush if things don't go well?"
