Eadie Navhelan |
Eadie removes her armor before attempting this challenge. “Not even the great Narmek Tar Kuata would have attempted this in armor … Unless he was a Sohei."
Climb: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10

re-roll #1
Climb: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
About a third of the way up, Eadie has a nasty scare as her reaching right hand dislodges a fist sized chunk of rock. Forgetting her own fight with gravity, Eadie looks straight down and spies Corbalias some distance below her.
“CORB, INCOMING!! SHIFT LEFT.”
She then pauses to take a few calming breaths. What’s done is done. Keep going, you can do this.
At the summit Eadie rises shakily to her feet. Finally looking up, she spies Lore and rubs her eyes. “Do you know a shortcut, Lore?”
As Corbalias appears at the spire’s edge she offers him her hand – but will not take offense if he wants to climb over the edge himself. “I’m so sorry about that rock, Corbalias.”
Corbalias Celecia |
Corb will defeat the spire!
Climb (morale): 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 6 + 1 + 3 + 2 = 29
Climb (morale): 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 6 + 1 + 3 + 2 = 27
Climb (morale): 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 6 + 1 + 3 + 2 = 16
In response to the falling rock, the 4-armed individual doesn't steer clear of the piece. He instead goes to headbutt the stone and accept full brunt of the assault from gravity.
Granted the power of adrenaline from his now-bleeding face, Corb powers through the climb with ease. After crossing the finish, he does not takes the assistance and attempts to throw himself as high as possible for the final pull. Looking quite pleased, he states/exclaims his praise to the sky (largely ignoring the apology and any slight in the accident), "RRRAGH! YEAH! THE LORD IN IRON BLESSES THIS EASY TRIAL OF MIGHT WITH GREATER PERSONAL CHALLENGE AND I GIVE THANKS WITH THE BLOOD OF CONFLICT!"
Lorelendral Teklet |
climb: 1d20 ⇒ 15
climb: 1d20 ⇒ 6
Somehow, Lore actually manages to make it partway up before she begins to fall, and gets caught and flown to the summit, beating the climbers in speed, but not in skill or success. At the top she sits and waits and offers prayers that the others pass the test.
Arovandeon Isero |
Arovandeon looks up at Eadie and Corbalias climbing with relative ease. His arms are used to lifting pen to paper, and are not much stronger than the latter. Still, he gives it his best try.
Climb: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
And slips off the wall after only a few feet!
Jonterra Seralith |
Jonterra watches Eadie and Corb easily climb the spire, respect etched upon his face. Wiping his hands and bare feet, he grasps the pillar.
Climb: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 7 + 2 = 19
Climb: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 7 + 2 = 27
Climb: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 7 + 2 = 29
The oread climbs steadily up, gaining speed as he ascends. Reaching the top, he wonders if there is enough room for three people as he shimmies over the edge.
Khamûl Unqualë |

Khamul climbs the cliff like a boss!
During some down time, Khamul will also pull aside his fellow Scarab Sages and remind them that their faction has been seeing for a new Sage. . . and who better than those who have trained in knowledge and self-perfection?
GM Aarvid |
Aeotsep nods approvingly as some of you are able to make the climb.
"Your confidence has given you success. Excellent again."
When you all reach the top of the pillar, you find Itephta
hovering above the spire, accompanied by a slender
Garundi woman carrying a long spear, her dark hair
woven into a braid.
Aeotsep joins them a few moments later, carrying a large bag on his back.
During the break, while the rest of the group is ferried to the top,
Aeotsep overhears Khamul mention Scarab Sages and turns to Khamul.
"Climbing the spire is much like walking the same
path that led Narmek Tar Kuata to enlightenment, and
sometimes one of the monastery’s students—including
one in recent memory—attains a level
of mastery and wisdom that could have rivaled the founder’s."
Eadie Navhelan |
Eadie suddenly feels a little exposed atop the spire without her armor. Maybe it’s my imagination, but the Tar Kuatans look a little threatening. At least I have some experience at fighting unarmored now.
“Lore, sorry to be a banker who needs a bail-out, but if you’re OK can I please take back my cloak?”
When Aeotsep speaks to Khamûl about helping the Scarab Sages complete their faction mission, Eadie visibly relaxes a little. “Oh, we would be most grateful if you could put us in touch with your outstanding student, Master! Would she or he be familiar with the goals of our faction – including the quest for more sage jewels?”
Arovandeon Isero |
Aeotsep's casual reference catches Arovandeon's attention. "We had hoped that the monastery would contain a student of advanced enlightenment. Might you be able to tell us more about them? Are they still here?"
Diplomacy (if needed): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Lorelendral Teklet |
"hon, you don't even need to ask... of course you can" Lore replies to Eadie.
GM Aarvid |
Aeotsep smiles at Arovandeon's question, but appears reluctant to identify the monk to whom he alludes.
Aro may need some help from his two faction-cohorts.
“This is your last test, Pathfinders—one I personally requested
and insisted on observing,”
Itephta says without taking his eyes
off the wooden case in his hands. The young monk opens the lid,
gracefully plucks a wand from inside, and hands the empty box
to Aeotsep.
Itephta points the wand at the spire, and in a matter
of seconds, the narrow summit expands into a broad platform,
like an unfolding mushroom.
“Irori teaches that inner peace and knowledge are key, but
one must be able to defend his values in trial by arms,”
he explains as the Garundi woman alights on the platform.
“I ask that you spar with the monastery’s champion, Aramaya.
Please make it an honorable fight, for the great Tar Kuata watches
us today.”
A new map is added to the top of the campaign page.
Khamûl Unqualë |
Khamul nods solemnly. "Gladly will I participate. What are your terms for an honorable fight? I presume nothing lethal or permanently damaging?"
Eadie Navhelan |
Aid Diplomacy from Eadie’s discussion with Aeotsep from b4: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
“As shall I!” Eadie spits in the palms of both hands before drawing her falchion. “Does the honorable Aramaya wish to compete with us one-on-one or all at once?”
Corbalias Celecia |
honorable
nothing lethal
The thought of finally reaching combat excites a slightly-confused Corb to not ask the necromancer if he knows the meaning of the word "honorable." He attempts to recall the big argument about the prisoner back in the Mwangi and his stance on the matter (or if he's just misremembering him being there), but thinks little of it as the past is the past and the trial is now. Remembrance for glorious Combat With Nature (plus the other pointless other things that happened on that trip) will wait another day... or probably never.
"HOW PREPARED IS THE OPPOSITION? YOU SAY HONORABLE; DOES THAT MEAN 100% CAPACITY AND NO UNSEEN PREPARATIONS IN THIS FAITH AS WELL?" Not really waiting for a response, Corb continutes after am omentary pause. "I CARE NOT, EVEN IF THEY HAVE ALREADY CAST MAGIC, ALCHEMY OR WHATNOT. BUT UNDER THE NAME OF THE LORD IN IRON, I STATE I HAVE DRINKS THAT I WILL ONLY INBIBE IF THEY WISH TO EXPERIENCE MY MAXIMUM POWER!" If the monk suggests to go full bore, just before combat, he'll drink his extracts of Enlarge Person #1, followed by Shield, and then his Mutagen (because 10 Int means no Extracts; I think they follow that spellcasting rule, even if they're already made a la Wizard's not losing spell slots but the ability to cast in the case of Int Damage. His AC evens out to 12, if my math is right. Only three lower than his mother's at her retirement.
GM Aarvid |
"You may make whatever preparations as long as they do not lethally injure, maim or permanently incapacitate."
GM Aarvid |
Aeotsep opens his bag to reveal an array of wooden weapons—including any
weapon the party use except firearms.
He explains.
"These wooden weapons function
as normal weapons of their type, except that they deal
nonlethal damage."
If a PC ascended the spire unaided,
Aeotsep instead offers that PC either a masterwork
version of the weapon or the one lesser merciful metamagic
rod (Pathfinder RPG Advanced Player’s Guide 295) in his bag.
Itephta warns "If you prefer, each can keep their own weapons, but
I must warn that any use of lethal force will result in the ending
the competition."
Eadie Navhelan |
Eadie is ashamed of herself for suspecting the monks may have been luring the party into an ambush.
So glad I didn’t say anything …
“That is very considerate of you, Master Aeotsep .” Eadie bows to the monk AND *snaps* to attention, bringing her right hand to her temple in imitation of a Korvosan Guard’s salute. “Sir! If it pleases you, I request a master-crafted wooden falchion to supplement my other weapons, Sir!”
Eadie is slightly more casual with her oread companion. “Hey Jonty! Could you please spare a mage armor charge for a loyal Pathfinder down on her luck?”
Arovandeon Isero |
Arovandeon's skill in hand-to-hand combat had always been pitiful. Alchemical bombs were powerful, but he had not yet researched a version to make them non-lethal. He did have a few tricks up his sleeves though, literally, and his mind made a few calculations upon looking at the wooden weapons presented to the group.
"I think I will take this." He says, taking a hooked sickle from the bag. He gives it a couple test swings that look awfully amateurish, but nods in satisfaction. "Yes, this will do."
Plucking an extract from his belt, he drinks it and drops the empty vial in his belt pouch.
Lorelendral Teklet |
Lore takes a small wooden scimitar from the offered weapons, and sighs, knowing her ability with it is meager to say the least, but it IS the Dawnflower's favored weapon, so she accepts it with grace. She then casts shield of faith on herself to better her armor a bit.
Corbalias Celecia |
Corb finds a mwk wooden greatsword.

"Very good. Please keep the combat honorable."
Itephta and Aeotsep step off the disc and are carried aloft by invisible servants.
Aeotsep waits for everyone to indicate they are ready.
Ok, make sure to adjust your stats and attacks for your current equipment. I have arrayed the party on the map. Feel free to adjust positions as long as you stay within the starting area on the southern part of the stone disk. I will start the combat this evening.
Eadie Navhelan |
@GM Aarvid, updated stats assume Jonty will give me a mage armor tap. If he doesn’t, THERE WILL BE TROUBLE! :)

I normally never get the chance to perform this before a fight. It’s sooooo hard to do in full plate!
Take 10 Perform (dance): 10 - 1 = 9
Eadie indicates her readiness by performing a war dance that Master of Swords, Marcos Farabellus taught her.
She sticks her tongue out far enough to almost reach her chin to signal the dance’s finale.

She momentarily pushes the barbarian back 5'. However, Corb has more than enough movement to get close to her and chop at her with his wooden greatsword.
Unfortunately, the wooden blade is not as heavy as he is accustomed and he swings wildly, slamming the wood into the stone disk.
GM Aarvid |
Not liking the overly large man near her, she steps away from him to bring her spear to bear. When Corbalias, follows, she uses her fists/feet to kick him instead.

Lore calls down divine blessings and Arovandeon becomes invisible.
Corbalias and Khamul are up as well as Corb ignores the stun of the kick to the head.
Eadie Navhelan |
Not much you can do about the dice, Lore!
Standing side-on to her opponent, Eadie raises her blunt, wooden weapon into the thin air above her right shoulder before looking Aramaya in the eye.
“Looking away from the Spire? That’s a paddlin’.”
“Looking at my featherstep slippers? That’s a paddlin’.”
“Activating a feather token (swan boat)? Oh, you better believe that’s a paddlin’.”
GM Aarvid |
Jonterra calls forth another blessing for the group and moves just out of reach of the woman to end the round.
Corbalias delays?
Khamul prepares to cast a spell upon her. Itephta and Aeotsep frown at the use of dark arts in these halls of enlightenment, but do not stop the contest.

Jonterra potentially pushed over the edge
The platform’s edge curves upward, providing
creatures at the edge a chance to catch themselves if
they start to fall. A creature knocked off the edge during
this encounter can catch the edge with a successful DC

back onto the platform as a move action with a successful
DC 15 Climb check.
Heading to work. Let me know if I missed anything. Party is up.
Khamûl Unqualë |
Khamul uses the merciful metamagic rod he borrowed from the monks before the contest and shoots a ray of fire at her!
ranged touch: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
nonlethal: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 2, 6) = 15
Should be against FF touch if she is blinded.
Being blind should also give her a 50% miss chance on her attacks I think.
GM Aarvid |
@Khamul, Yes to both - miss chances for her attacks were already included above, but she hit all 3 miraculously. Whether she actually made contact was another matter.
Corbalias Celecia |
didn't see the mini init note at bottom of the post; apologies! Thursday is a live game of mine and was expecting inviburglars to interfere or something when I wasn't on the numbered inits earlier. This full attack would be before the whirlwind knocks me out.

GM Aarvid |
Ok between Corbalias and Eadie, that will probably put the monk down, but will go through the calcs to be sure.
Prior to the blindness, Corbalias takes a trio of hacks at the spear-wielding woman, easily hitting her with the first and barely with the second.
She winces in pain but continues to stand, until blinded by Khamul.
Whirling she tries to hit Corbalias but he is too close to her to get a descent stab. She hits Eadie and Jonterra, pushing the latter over the edge. The stone-monk-man miraculously clings to the edge and pulls himself up.
Eadie steps up with the distraction and hits the blinded monk once and she drops to the ground unconscious.
* End Combat *
GM Aarvid |
Aeotsep calls out. "We have our victors. Please stand down."
Assuming the party complies, Itephta is shuttled back to the disc and revives the fallen woman, Aramaya.
As the monk regains consciousness, she reaches out in her blindness.
Itephta casts a spell to remove the darkness from her as well.
Aramaya stands and at first hesitantly, but then respectfully bows to your group.
"I acknowledges your considerable skills in combat.
I must now retire to my room to contemplate my own performance
and how I might improve against such tactics in the future."
The invisible stalkers carry everyone back to
the base of the spire, and Itephta uses his magic to return
the pillar to its original shape.
He, Aeotsep, and Menkha then excuse themselves to discuss your trials.
Itephta explains.
"You Pathfinders are free to wander the monastery’s grounds in
the meantime, and we will have a room prepared in one of
the Pahmet caves and made available for your use this night.
Tomorrow we talk further of your unfinished business here."
Eadie Navhelan |
At Aeotsep’s call to stand down, Eadie immediately drops her weapon, clasps her palms together and bows once at the waist to the Master. She then turns in Aramaya’s direction, bows again and remains bent over at the waist until the defeated monk rises and bows to the Pathfinders.
If Eadie hears any whispery complaints as the wind spirit lifts her for the descent to Golarion, the warrior frowns. “Just be thankful I’m not wearing my armor, Buster!”
“Say, you stalkers fly pretty well, right? How about we do a free-fall drop with a sudden deceleration juuuuust before we hit ground? Sound like *fun* or WHAT!”
She shouts to her companions ”Race you to the bottom, guys!”
Assuming she survives the giant drop, Eadie dons her armor and re-gathers her belongings.
This fighting unarmored is becoming a habit! That’s not a bad thing I s’pose.
Once three hours pass Eadie will have regained all her non-lethal hit points back, GM Aarvid.
The young fighter spends the rest of her day laughing and chatting with her companions. She offers to help Lore with the evening meal, as well as hauling water ...
"Nah, it's OK. I'm not a sorcerer's apprentice." And splitting firewood for any monk or villager in need.
Lorelendral Teklet |
Lore is just happy to drift down to the ground and if she's last one to arrive, that's fine too.... When she gets to the bottom, she relinquishes her small wooden scimitar and is happy she didn't have to use it.
"Did you all enjoy my spell? I hope it helped. Hope we don't need it again today as I don't have another like it. I hope the monks don't consider boosting your abilities to be cheating." She shrugs and sighs, unsure of the monks' response to her buffing the party a bit.
She goes to the room assigned to them and checks it out, then once she's a had a chance to stash her pack and armor, she wanders about the monastery a bit to learn what's where, and maybe learn more about their hosts.
